Starlight Meets the City Lights

If you've been following my bsky, you probably already saw my variety of struggles. But since you're here, I guess you'd want to hear more backstory?!

Well the backstory is that I went to Times Square and spun around looking like a silly tourist to get a panoramic shot for the BG bc I didn't want to draw the whole thing myself! I probably looked a little crazy being the only one who took a picture at eye level while everyone was looking up at the lights.

Since I was in the neighborhood, I also dropped by Kinokuniya for some window shopping, but then I saw this:

and I couldn't resist buying a few volumes of manga........

A-Anyways, back to VN dev!

After getting these shots, I tried it with what I had so far. These were the initial test frames for the full movement I had drawn.

I put the BG through a few filters, and did some light paint over to make things look... a bit more fitting to the character art. There's no replacing hard work. Without a doubt, this would definitely look best with a hand drawn BG, but I am running low on time.

Unfortunately exporting as a gif compressed the image a lot. Here's actually an example of how large the full image is.

Ultimately, these gifs are just tests. Each frame will be saved separately and chained together with code.

The full effect will be done by keeping the BG separate, having it spin in the opposite direction of where Star is facing to give the illusion of movement.

The initial frame where Star appears to be moving, but is actually still is also created with shadow movement along side the BG. These are also manually drawn frame by frame.

There's still a lot of work to do and I'm forever afraid of the ding! that sounds whenever I run out of layers, but that's a story for next week.

Jincan Underground

Or, Buggy BL finally has a title! Wait, I only have one post about it?

A number of things have changed about the concept, but the core of it being based on Kodoku remains. However, since I'll be using more than just insects as character themes, I decided to reference Jincan (the Chinese version of Kodoku).

The main character, Roach, is an underground fighter still grieving the death of his employer, Catarina. By chance, he runs into Catarina's younger brother on the run from a beggar. By saving him, however, Roach lost his name and sealed himself into a death match with 20 other participants...

Eat or be eaten, become the Jincan and have your greatest wish granted.

...Or something like that.

SWAK Jam

sorry i just dont buy this. first of all from having read the original comic before second of all because hes just some guy in both versions (who just happened to work for g-dir, best of the worst type deal) and third of related to the second of, it all feels like they pushed a role on him he didnt even knew existed and it all went downhill from there.

if he really was one of the catalysts of the apocalypse though rather than just being caught up in the aftermath (alongside PILOT!!!!) and omitting all that in previous POV logs for the unreliable narrator trope, then sorry tumblr sexy man that never was. i cant defend you here. you looked at yourself, said 'i can make her better' and then made her worse

ok so. if i recall correctly people in too much debt get killed and turned into dexes and idk if all dexes do the same job but in pilots case he became a debt collector or something. aka kill more people to create more dexes

and in most panels of him pre apoc without the pilot gear he didnt seem too thrilled about anything, facial expression wise. what im getting to is, it could be something added in the rewrite but it would be interesting if part of his character design had a smile stapled on whether he likes it or not.

anyway uh. idk if ill post doodles or not yet BUT important notes for my indulgent quick jrwi mlp au:

riptide and black rose crews intentionally designed together bc i fuck w those parallels so hard: arlin and chip are earth ponies, drey and jay are pegasi, and finn and gillion are unicorns. both so all crews have even mix of three, but also to reflect alrin+chip's simple non-magic side, drey+jay's bird symbolism, and finn+gill's magic/casting focus compared to their crewmates

chip still has the arlin earring, but in this case arlin's cutie mark was a gold axe (possibly w waves behind it?? or the waves are just a coat pattern like w pipsqueak, OR the bg of the cutie mark a la luna)

all the ferins have some kind of wing or bird in their cutie marks, like how the apple family all has apples-- both to symbolize the family bond but also works as freedom symbolism for drey and jay (possibly most have birds/feathers and they have Just Wings to push symbolism??? to be decided)

-- drey's looks a LOT like the canon emblem, w a side facing bird in front of a circle, but the circle is actually meant to represent the barrel of a gun. if family emblem exists in canon in this au, adds extra Hurt that he became a pirate.

-- jay's cutie mark is an open set of wings w a sunset/sunrise behind them. ties in general sun/fire theming AND represents a new change, a "new day" for her as she becomes and accepts being a pirate

undecided if i'll go thru w it yet (bc it depends on individual character design), but POSSIBLY the riptide jolly roger is literally Made Up of components from everyone's cutie marks: wings from jay, coral from gill, crack from chip

gill and finn both also share parts of their cutie marks to show their relation to one another (undecided, but likely?)

-- working rn w both cutie marks having tentacles in it-- for finn it's coming out/on top of of a page, to show his academic side + study of aquatic life. for gillion, it's on the blade/hilt of the sword (like in canon) to reflect how he was raised as a weapon.

-- alt gill designs include coral design or a design of a full moon + waves to represent the prophecy

-- also i know gillion being a non-pony makes the most sense and they LITERALLY have an aquatic race in canon but. i just dont like em enough JKDFSJKL sorry hes a horse until i can change my own mind

niklaus cutie mark is either the moon he gave gill (minus letters?), n gill gets niklaus' cutie mark instead of the canon mark, OR he has some kind of 6-pointed cutie mark (due to 6 points being used in mlp canon to represent fate/destiny, a la the main 6 and twilight's cutie mark)

ALSO like stated in prev tags: chip got his cutie mark immediately after the hole in the sea. like when he woke up type beat. and im leaning towards it being a whirlpool design (or a crack?? something chipped????). which means the universe decided his Special Fate and talent is lowkey his Big Trauma :tm: AND it means that he had no one to celebrate getting a cutie mark (which is a Big Deal in universe) with bc he just lost his WHOLE fam.

-- i imagine in au just like how chip has this Massive Hero Worship thing, he looked up to the black rose and was always SO excited for when he got his mark and was like "mines gonna be SO much cooler!!" or "I hope i get one like your!!" etc. and then. :))))

-- ALSO this isnt 100% purposeless angst, cutie marks are meant to reflect your like... Future? like what you're Meant to Do by fate's design or whatever. and like said by others before, chip wasn't meant to exist at all. thus, his mark reflects the moment that came true.

in literally NO piece of descendants media is there a queen of hearts kid. she's one of the most fucking iconic disney villians out there, and yet no one in this franchise wanted to give her a kid. here's some characters we DID get kids of tho

⁃ Plays casually but consistently, riddle is a perfectionist and wants to make his teams good, but he’s also realistic and pragmatic. He knows he’s a busy guy, and can’t join trains all day to bust up all his grids at once

⁃ The type to focus on one team at a time based on a predetermined order. Probably not in a crew (if he is, it’s just him, Cater and some of Cater’s friends) so he doesn’t worry about guild wars and building his teams based on that.

⁃ f2p, he’s responsible with his money. probably mains light since he likes the comfort of a high hp pool + stamina, and the typical light play style is reliable and safe.

⁃ Has only recruited one eternal—funf. Her voice probably drives him up the wall, but he likes the security of her heals to his light team. Is planning on 5*ing her!

⁃ favourite class is doctor. Practical, and he won’t admit it but sexy as fuck

⁃ He plays for the gameplay rather than the story/characters, the one exception is sandalphon, who he is incredibly fond of!!! he reads stories if the plot interests him, however, and if he’s got some spare time.

⁃ Leona doesn’t play he’s in it like a collecting game and so ruggie can use his randomly lucksacked mlb shiva as a support summon

⁃ like vil, plays on roulette season

⁃ reads some stories, but on ruggies account bc he cba to unlock them himself

⁃ ruggie made a joke about leona being percival ‘if he lost his sense of honour’ which made leona go and read the dragon knights stories

⁃ Only started playing recently, but was determined to catch up to Idia and become the best player so he got the twins and some poor unfortunate souls to help him grind and pay his way to instant victory

⁃ Doesn’t care for the plot, is purely driven by competition and wanting to have the best grids at any given time. Mains water for the Octavinelle Aesthetic and bitches about having to play the summer cagliostro crit setup to compete with other elements.

⁃ Likes quatre because they are both driven purely by spite and revenge, and is desperate for him to get a rebalance so he can run him w/ a clear conscience

⁃ Also likes Six, probably cried like a bitchboy during seeds of redemption which is to this date the only story he has read but you didn’t hear it from me

⁃ In a crew with idia and is waiting to overthrow him as captain

⁃ Has a weird spreadsheet showing exactly when to cast a status effect for it to land with the highest success that’s virtually unreadable to anyone aside from him

⁃ Plays chaos ruler as default bc he thinks it looks cool

⁃ sparks for the weapon rather than the character

⁃ hates farming for mats and gets the twins/his slaves to do his dailies when he’s busy a lot of the time god i wish i had slaves to farm ubaha host mats for me rn

Kalim

⁃ Rank 50 but his grids are the best of anyone in the game bc haha money go brrrr

⁃ He is cursed with bad gacha luck, and managed to deck himself out with the sexiest primal grid possible (puts idia’s to shame) thanks to jamils help, and a lot of money spent on trying to get Vikala’s ssr (before realising the spark function existed...)

⁃ He doesn’t favour any element, because he likes all the characters! He has a soft spot for Anila and Vikala though, since they’re so adorable and fun!

⁃ Doesn’t play seriously and mostly just reads the stories, idia wants to cry when he sees his fire grid with four flb ixabas going to waste

⁃ He likes Sarasa, and thinks she’s really funny, so when he does play it’s mostly grinding to recruit her!

fr though i have never come up with a bg and personality faster for a character. this is liza, my neutral evil mother, and i love her so much. i don’t really have any wcs in particular for this character, but i def wanna plot and see what tomfoolery we can come up with. as usual, deets below the cut, and like for me to hyu for plotting !

history. 

in another life, elizabeth would be an actress. her rags to riches story would enthrall millions, she’d bring audiences to tears and the academy to their knees, and her name would be remembered for generations to come. but fate had other plans for a woman so talented and hungry for fame, for elizabeth was born lyudmila fyodorovna, the fifth child of a pair of factory workers in leningrad.

her father was an alcoholic, and terrorized the household, and lyudmila finally ran away at age nine, all on her own. from there, she quickly learned how to survive. when she couldn’t get enough money begging in the streets, she stole a school uniform and pretended to be a student who’d gotten lost on a school trip and needed money to get back home. she quickly learned the fastest way to make money: lie. 

her favorite way to con, once she became a teenager, was to seduce and then vanish with whatever she could grab. as she grew older, she went for bigger and bigger fish; party men, mobsters, oligarchs, you name it. she could read them, devise what kind of girl they wanted; sometimes she was a university student, other times a ballerina, other times a simple farm girl. 

at age twenty, however, she was caught rifling through the drawer of one of her marks. the mobster threatened to have her killed. she barely got out alive, and she fled the city. at that point, she figured it was time for a new con. 

it was not long after that she found little zoya, then just a baby, left at a government building in a nearby village. admittedly, her first thought wasn’t to take the child in out of the goodness of her heart; it was that, if she pinched this thing, it would be an incredibly useful prop for cons.

it was a successful con, and she ran it for a while. long enough that she became attached to the baby. she realized, when she started calling her myushka even when they were alone, that she’d actually come to love the little girl. 

as soon as she had the opportunity, she moved herself and zoya to the us, not necessarily for the glitz and glamor associated with america, but for another reason: america was the mecca of the con artist. where russians are pessimistic, americans are optimistic, and lyudmila played them all for fools. she’s gone by countless names by now, and is an old pro at countless types of scams. 

calloway was a miracle she stumbled across while running insurance schemes out of a hospital. a man with amnesia who also had a billion dollar inheritance? she nearly tripped running out of the place to get everything in order. all the forgeries she could think necessary, a small shoplifted closet of designer clothes, and, of course, a wedding band and matching engagement ring from a pawn shop. 

after that, all she had to do was fling herself at calloway and apologize profusely for getting stuck in russia visiting family, and how much her poor husband must have missed her. 

tl;dr - soviet woman runs away from abusive family, cons to survive, finds a baby, grows to love her, moves to america, cons some more, until she trips into the job of a lifetime. 

personality.

of course, she’s actually a fucking snake in all meanings of the word. cunning, conniving, constantly looking for her next payday. she, of course, considers herself a survivor. 

naturally charismatic and charming. 

as liza, however, she is incredibly gregarious and bubbly. she loves to talk to people, and is actively trying to make friends in hillston. probably trying to host parties and stuff, especially to advertise her event planning business. 

will liza figure out who has beef with each other and then invite them to the same brunch to watch them fight, pretending she’s too sweet and clueless to notice that these people wouldn’t get along until it’s too late? yes she will. 

she honestly picked the event planner career out of the blue; she pretends to not be very good at it, but she finds herself enjoying it. when she gets work, that is. 

has kept a slight russian accent for this con, so she has a sweet purring lilt when she speaks. (she’s incredibly talented with her voice; she can do any number of accents, from italian to brooklyn italian. her natural voice is a much deeper russian accent, though.) says her russian name is yelizaveta, but goes by elizabeth or liza because it’s easier for americans to pronounce. 

she’s also incredibly protective and somewhat controlling over zara. she’s still liza’s baby girl, after all. 

uuuuuh tries her ding darn best to be perfect. always wearing a beautiful outfit, with perfect makeup and hair. always willing to lend a hand, do a favor. basically so nobody kicks up a fuss about her being here.

there’s nothing he can’t do especially with florist!jinki and cake designer!taemin by his side, not to mention dress designer!kibum and mixologist!minho always ready to help for a discounted price

which the clientele obviously don’t know about

the boys work for other wedding designers too, as well as different events that their job calls for

so most of them are in the know when it comes to who is who in the event planning business esp kibum

this did offend jonghyun that you somehow didn’t know his voice over the phone so he dramatically replies “this is jonghyun obv,,, the best wedding planner in the world”

but you must not notice the hostility in his voice bc you reply, “dude i love you! you’re like my hero when it comes to weddings,,, all my weddings are inspired by you”

jonghyun isn’t sure he can change his prices like the last thing he wants to do is make his clients broke but he also doesn’t want people to think he’s cheap

he almost wants to ask you how you do it: stay afloat at low prices and still able to pay rent

but he’s still angry and annoyed w you so he resists and hangs up on you, not feeling up to talking to you

so after that you sort hate jonghyun too like why did he have to be so rude to you??

but fast forward to a few days before the wedding and your florist cancelled???? and you have no idea what to do bc the whole theme of this wedding was floral paradise and you can’t have floral paradise without the floral

and you have no idea what you’re doing like you can’t find another florist this late in the game that will agree to give you a ton of flowers on short notice

they’d have to work overtime and it’d be such a chore and you feel at such a loss

your first overseas wedding and you were so excited bc your work would finally be in the news and more people might ask for you by name

all that work down the drain bc a florist who quit for unknown reason

you feel like crying and for some reason you pick up your phone and call jonghyun

yeah you sort of hate him but he’s also a fellow wedding planner and he’s the closest one you can go to right now who probably has advice

and it’s late when you call so his voice is super groggy and low “hello?”

you’re shaking like your anxiety is to the max and “jonghyun? it’s y/n and —”

“are you crying?” his voice is v soft and sweet like suddenly he doesn’t sound so mean

“it’s just that my florist cancelled on me and the wedding is in two days! how am i supposed to find a florist who will give me a whole truck load of flowers in two days?? the theme is based around flowers and if i fail this one no one is ever going to trust me again i’ll be known as a failure and an untrustworthy planner”

and jonghyun just kind of shushes you like “look you’re really tired and worried, but you need sleep okay? get some rest and meet me at the park on maple at around eight o'clock”

he doesn’t really give you time to agree but for some reason his words calm you, and you think jonghyun might actually help you

the next morning you grab all your planning stuff and head over to the park, hoping that jonghyun didn’t send you on a wild goose hunt just for fun.

when you finally spot him, he’s sitting around with four other guys and like five or six dogs running around and chasing each other

when you see jonghyun you lowkey gasp like wow he’s v handsome irl too bad he’s so rude to me

but then he smiles and walks up to you, looking sort of nervous “hey, um, these are my friends. jinki here is a florist and if you want, we can all pitch in and get the decorations ready for the wedding using the flowers he has”

you genuinely don’t know what to say like you sort of thought jonghyun was just going to make a laughing stock of you but he hasn’t

“aren’t you going to tell me that you’re a better planner than me?”

jonghyun shrugs “i mean, i am, but as a planner i know that it’s important that every wedding goes off without a hitch. i will push away my feelings for the good of the wedding”

it’s not the apology you wanted but you have more important things to worry abt so you’re like great!!! let’s go!!!

and turns out jinki is super sweet and owns this really small flower shop and it’s filled with a bunch of pretty arrangements and stuff

and he was more than ready to give you a helping hand

you gave him all the blueprints and drawings you had ready and jinki was like !!!! i can do this !!!!

and he shows you all of the flowers he has and all the different ways he can arrange them

so you two plan centerpeices and aisle markers and stuff

once you’re satisfied you show it to the other boys and everyone gets to work replicating all the pieces

and you’ve also got to make your own banners like you have to find siLK

and kibum is like dndnsnnsks well i have a ton in my office i’ve got eggshell and pearl and cream and lavender and rose and —

jonghyun cuts him off like we’re on a schedule buddy!!!

so jonghyun decides to take you to kibum’s house since he needs to drop all the puppers off anyways

they’re a bit of a distraction at the flower shop since taemin and kibum can’t seem to leave them alone

and when you arrive you see the pearl colored silk and immediately know it’ll go with the flowers

so you grab it and drape it across the edges of kibum’s desk “so imagine this is the aisle and it dips between each pew with a lil bouquet matching the bride is holding it up”

and as you’re talking you get this huge smile on your face and jonghyun begins to feel bad for being so rude to you over the phone bc

rlly you’re just like him: someone who wants to make others happy

and you both only have the bride and groom’s best interests at heart

it shouldn’t matter who is planning the wedding as long as the couple is happy

but jonghyun keeps this all to himself like he has some pride yknow

he helps you cut the silk and fold it neatly so that it doesn’t get messed up on the way back

and when you guys arrive everyone is amazed bc the colors look rlly beautiful together like all the boys are lowkey getting emo

esp jonghyun he always gets really emotional when he helps w a wedding bc he kind of dreams of his own and he can’t wait for it to be perfect and beautiful and amazing

most importantly he can’t wait to have someone by his side who makes him forget the beauty of flower arrangements and dresses and cakes

anyway so it takes well into the night before all the arrangements are finished

and the boys are already planning on helping you place them in the church and reception hall the next day bc you’re on a time punch and this was all the florists’ job

so they come over and everyone gets started on a different section of the church

jinki tells you and jonghyun to go to the reception hall and set up the centerpieces and everything

jinki lowkey ships the two of you okay

at the reception hall you both just set up the flowers and hope everything will be done before the rehearsal dinner that night, or else you’ll have to tell the bride that she lost her florist

you’re hoping she’ll never find out abt your screw up

when you guys are done you just sit and breathe bc …. finally ….. it’s over and you can rest

jonghyun is sort of close to you like his arm keeps brushing against your shoulder and you catch him more than once stealing glances at you

“thank you,” you say, bc you can’t really put into words how much his help means to you

he nods, “yeah, i guess when the couple books a sucky wedding planner, a mistake like this is expected”

you think he’s being legit and turn your head, almost sad that he still hates you

but he’s smiling at you, a teasing glint in his eye

you push him like dude that wasn’t cool i’m still on edge

but jonghyun keeps talking like “yknow, since i saved the day, it’s rlly only fair that you take me to the wedding as your plus one. that way i can make sure you don’t screw anything else up”

you glance at him again, and notice his ears have turned a bit red “you mean as a date? are you asking me to ask you on a date?”

“no,” he scoffs, “i’m telling you that you should repay me by making me your plus one”

“but essentially you want to date me”

“no i don’t,” he says, but he’s smiling and you find yourself unable to keep your own grin back 

“fine then. jonghyun, do you want to be my plus one to the wedding? i’d really love it if you were my date.”

jonghyun is lowkey super happy that you’ve agreed and reaches for your hand like “well if you insist”

hey i’m looking to get into a role play but i’ve never done it before so do you have any recommendations on how to start, how to roleplay, etc??

aw man, uhhh… well, I got some wc ones! Land of the Lost is currently accepting, a new reboot of Clans of the Shoshone, Falling Leaves (for Pack and Clan), and Left in Lesdin’s gonna be opening soon! 

for how to start, I def recommend creating a character you want to rp - you want one that you can connect to, and can rp often. I’ve created characters on a whim multiple times before, which… wasn’t great bc I ended up abandoning them basically which was just a mess dfjhfdh

start with a design, name, and a base personality, but give yourself room for them to grow!! if you have any ideas in mind with them, definitely talk to a mod if you’re in a group rp, like the ones I listed. you can talk to others to set up relationships, or just rp and build them from there! you can be vague with family and bg, or go all out! tho it def depends on what the rp has going on, bc you may want to add bg events to their bio o: also there’s normally a bio format posted with each rp, so you don’t need to worry about setting one up!

also, bc apps are through google docs, I highly recommend saving any oc info you make bc I keep forgetting to do that and I immediately forget what I wrote dsfhjfdsh

with rping in general, it’s gonna depend on the rp! usually the ones I’m in are more literate, which asks for at least a paragraph reply, but it’s not always the case! also, you don’t have to be a writer to rp! it may be awkward at first, but it definitely gets easier as you rp more and more - I’ll give an example at the end!

oh! I can’t believe I forgot this, but reading the rules is highly important! please read them and make sure you follow them

outside of discord, I have no idea ahah - I know there are a lot of forum rps out there, and it’s been a few years since I’ve used the forums on fanfiction net so idk if those are even still active ahah

tumblr rp has changed a lot - before, all you had to do was set up a blog (side or main - I prefer main bc it’s easier to follow other rp blogs and get recognized), and either rp as a canon character or an oc! ofc they don’t need to be a fandom oc, they can just be an og one!

but for tumblr rp, you def gotta think of a solid character bg if an oc (fandom or not) bc it’s easier for everyone when other muns can look and see who your character is. I def recommend setting up a rule page, so that way you can explain what stuff you want to avoid (for me was nsfw stuff mostly), or stuff you’re fine with (a lot of people would mention age ranges they were comfortable with when it came to other muns - like there were a few rp blogs that would only interact with people 18+ or 21+, which was a good thing tbh)

it’s def been a hot minute since I’ve rped on here, but when you make an oc to rp, this is where it gets hella important to make sure you can connect with them - I ended up ditching a lot of blogs bc I lost muse, and it’s a bummer tbh, but it does happen. also idk if rping is still active here or not? bc last I check the marvel rp tag it was just. ads for group rps and idk if they’re tumblr based anymore

anyway, tumblr rping is def gonna be harder! just bc it’s hard to get off the ground at the beginning, and it’s just… idk, weird? some people won’t respond to you and things get lost and it can become a mess, but at the same time, it can be a lot of fun! it just really depends on how you handle stuff and how active you are really

The pale queen had arrived shortly after Aspenstar and Jaggedstripe settled Badgerwing’s body down in the flowers. She would’ve been with them, matching their steps stride by stride, but she had to check on her kits before she left. She had seen how frightened they were with the thunder alone, and she couldn’t imagine the confusion the little ones must’ve felt when their Clanmates began to panic at the death before Aspenstar soothed them. They were far too young to understand death, and she could only pray that it wouldn’t affect them. And despite how collected she had seemed back in camp, it was clear the deputy’s death had was not taken lightly - her steps were slow, her eyes misted with grief.

 A shaky breath escaped her jaws as Mistfang slowed to a stop beside her gathered Clanmates, the air thick with grief and tension. Finchpaw spoke, then Grasspelt. Jaggedstripe stepped toward Badgerwing next, but it was clear she was in too much pain to speak. But… as she gazed around at the others, her throat tightened with grief. Was no one else going to speak? Bluestone remained silent. Hootnose was silent as well, his gaze averted, and it was clear he wished to be anywhere but there. She just hoped their silence wasn’t from hostility - from them still holding a grudge for her leaving them for so long.

With a shake of her head, the molly slowly stepped forward, leaning down to rasp her tongue over Badgerwing’s head. “You were larger than life,” she said at last, her voice soft as ever. “You helped us each in your own way, and I feel my words can never be enough to explain my gratitude. You saved my life, and helped me with my kits. I can’t thank you enough for everything you have done. I hope you find comfort in StarClan, and I wish you all the best.”

It was shorter than she would’ve liked, but Mistfang hadn’t been close to Badgerwing - not as much as she would’ve liked. But regrets were useless, and she knew the dangers of getting lost in the what-ifs. As long as the deputy was safe in StarClan, free of any pain and of any troubles, then she knew it would be okay. It had to be. 

Slowly, Mistfang took a few steps back, head bowed as she sat down.
