— born in the town of dingle, a small port town in ireland, malcolm and his family immigrated to america when he was ten years old. they moved into misty hollow after his father opened up his own bookshop and the o’sullivan’s have been there ever since. 

— always having been a rebellious child, malcolm ( slowly gaining the nickname sully in school ) seemed to have a knack for doing anything that pissed his father off. his greatest act ? moving out as soon as he graduated without so much as a goodbye.

— malcolm was only a wee lad when the misty hollow murders were happening. his older brother, his only brother, was unfortunately one of the victims, being eight at the time. he’s not too torn up about it, he was only two years old. but his father reminded him everyday growing up, how much smarter and accomplished and just overall better his brother was than him.

— the only thing that sully was grateful for about his father was the love for books he had ingrained into him. growing up, he developed a knack for writing and he ended up going to the university of pennsylvania for journalism. after that, sully moved out to new york where he worked as a journalist for the new york times and wrote articles on political updates and reports. 

— he met his wife in new york and they had three children together, two girls and one boy. sully was living the classic american dream. until, of course, it was all ruined in a single camping trip. 

— it was just sully and the three kids, except the trip was cut short and he had to come home with two kids instead of three. sully’s youngest, nancy, was taken at the campgrounds and evidence of her murder was found in a nearby cabin.

— this tore sully’s family apart. the tragedy forced him towards a downwards spiral, an endless cycle of destructive habits. it got to the point where his wife decided to divorce him and to take the kids with her. 

— sully eventually, reluctantly, made the decision to return to misty hollow. there, he stayed with his parents for a bit until he got a job at o’sullivan’s books and was able to take a couple months to get back on his feet. 

— his parents initially pushed him towards trying to work at the mystic herald but sully hasn’t written a single sentence since his daughter died. now, his father has essentially left him to run the bookshop for him, which sully doesn’t mind. it’s quiet work that doesn’t require too much effort.

— to sum it up in one sentence .. sully has essentially has regressed into a man-child in the more recent years of his life, but the inferiority complex is a tried and true constant. 

— he hasn’t really properly dealt with his daughter’s death ( even though it’s been over a decade.. ), just lives in a constant cycle of whenever he does try to think about it, he feels like shit and just thinks about all the things he could’ve done differently so he stops immediately. 

— sully always wanted to be a dad, to prove that he could be a better one than his own father. so he feels like he really failed in that retrospect. he’s like a human pity party. though he does that classic thing where he glosses over his sad feelings with destructive behaviour and inappropriate humour.

— very self-indulgent, does whatever he wants, whenever he wants. as long as it makes him feel better, even just for a moment, he’ll do it. doesn’t take anything very seriously, just kinda jokes around all the time. is one of those people that just give off.. kinda pathetic vibes you know? like you look at him and you’re like ?? what are you doing with your life dude ?? and he’s like idk

— but, on the bright side, this makes him pretty easy-going and down-to-earth. definitely a roll-with-the-punches and no bullshit type of guy, isn’t discouraged by much and doesn’t care a whole lot about what others think of him. it’s easy for him to engage in conversation and be all charismatic when he feels like it. 

— despite all .. of that, sully actually comes across as a relatively okay guy. he can be friendly and crack a few jokes while he’s at it, he’s one of those people that, as long as thinks you’re chill, treats you like you guys have been friends forever. but he can be pretty crude / vulgar at times, sooo how others react to that is kind of a gamble !

tw: car accident & illness 

this mans has lived in town his entire life!!! his parents, william and rose bigelow owned a historic farm . willy & rose were high school sweethearts, a shotgun wedding joining them together after rose ended up pregnant with their first child at the age of 19. while rose’s parents were furious with their daughter for being so reckless, william’s father was more than happy to offer them a place to stay and lend a hand taking care of the baby that would soon be on the way.

despite the circumstances, wes was never treated as an accident or a mistake. he grew up in his grandpa’s farmhouse with a loving family. the bigelow family followed some pretty traditional gender roles. wes’ dad and his grandpa would wake at the crack of dawn and work out in the field until sunset while his mother hung around the house to take care of him, doing laundry, making dinner, taking him to the park, everything.

from a young age he was encouraged to help out on the farm but being the mama’s boy he was, he was far more eager to help his mom out with the cooking and the laundry. he was close with his grandfather as well, the two always working on little projects together like building a tree house, birdhouses, his own bee house………………….a lot of houses

but wes was never rly close with his father. william wasn’t much of an emotional or talkative guy, usually just sitting there in stern silence and working the day away. a bit of a scary guy despite not ever doing anything scary?? he’s just an ominous guy that doesn’t rly seem impressed by anything so wes never rly knew where he stood u know.

the one time wes ever really felt close to his father was when they would take little weekend fishing trips together, even though they didn’t really speak. just the fact that william took his time to teach wes how to do everything and didn’t get mad or frustrated when he lost a lure or let a fish go by accident was enough to like…..send the message. that was his way of showing his love u know.

the second bigelow child was welcomed when wes was a kid and while at first he was jealous that his new baby sister was getting all the attention, having a baby around the house was kind of fun. she’d make funny faces and funny noises and he grew to love her pretty quickly. he used to always say that his baby sister was the best thing that happened to him. when she got older, he taught her how to make mud pies and how to play pranks on grandpa who was a rly good sport, all things considered.

car accident & death tw !! the winter of ‘94 would prove to be the worst winter of wes’ entire life. on the way back home to pick up a christmas tree from a nearby farm, the family’s old pick up hit a patch of black ice and ended up flipped into a ditch. it was a bad wreck. luckily his grandpa and sister were safe at home during the time of the crash, but wes and his parents weren’t so lucky, his mother being the unluckiest of the bunch. they were stranded in the middle of the road for two hours before anyone showed up for help and by the time they arrived, it was too late for rose, who got the worst of the injuries. doa at the hospital while wes and his dad walked away with mostly minor injuries. that year, there was no christmas tree and no presents. christmas dinner was replaced with takeout and no one said a word.

illness & death tw !! not long after rose passed away, grandpa bigelow got some bad news. lung cancer that no one really saw coming. just a few months after the diagnosis they were having another funeral for another member of the bigelow clan.

it was a tough year, but they got through it. wes did his job to step up and do all the things his dad couldn’t do; all the things his mother taught him. he expected all of it to make his dad more closed off but it had the reverse effect and for the first time in his entire life, wes and his father had heart to heart conversations.

jump forward to high school and things finally felt like they were back to normal. william wasn’t dating yet but he wasn’t being all that anti-social, either.

wes discovered quickly he was the kind of person that other people liked and he was quite popular??? he made good grades, played football, dating the coolest girl in school (in his own opinion ofc), everything kind of fell into place for him in high school

and then after high school he…………didn’t rly know what to do asdj;fdksgfkdlj he never went to college and decided work around town doing odd jobs and saving some money so he could go off and travel and live his life as a young person craving adventure.

he was gone for abt a year or so before coming back home & he’s just been here ever since, doin his thing

started working with a family friend in his shop, doing what he loved and building things n working with his hands u know and hasn’t stopped doing what he loves ever since

he owns his own shop now & builds custom furniture

Arizonan Keith just works so much better, y'all. It makes way more sense that the Galaxy Garrison & Keith’s shack are in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert rather than in Texas. So as your resident Arizona Expert™ let me explain why:

NASA uses the sonoran desert to simulate the harsh climate of the moon for future lunar missions

it makes sense that the Garrison would do the same, and it even suggests they do in the Wiki

the astronauts of the apollo 11 mission literally practiced the moon landing in arizona at one of our extinct volcanic sites, cinder lake. we have a lot of extinct volcanoes here. 

the desert seen in the show looks very similar to the sonoran desert, especially the monument valley area

one of the most famous US UFO sightings, the phoenix lights, was in az. the state is also ranked one of the top areas for UFO sightings (over 3,000 reported since 1950)

there are a lot of sketchy military/government bases and projects in az. because it’s a desert with huge stretches of empty space, mountains, subterranean caves, and no people, it’s the perfect place for SECRETS.

keith rly likes cacti. he thinks they’re admirable plants, especially saguaros. it blew his mind when he first learned saguaros get to be 200 years old so whenever he passes a really big one he’s like ya done good, buddy, keep it up

keith fears javelinas. fears, but respects them

he thinks tarantulas are pretty neat tho

keith loves bobcats??? & wishes he could pet one but also likes his hands

sometimes keith howls back to the coyotes at night and hoots back to the owls, sometimes they answer

he likes to tempt fate so he bought a blacklight and shines it around his shack at night, he gets a little thrill out of seeing all the scorpions light up. also, scorpions are edible. keith is not picky

he shakes his boots out every morning because scorpions tend to crawl into them. he names them all (thanks for the hc @keithhawke)

he’s been stung by various horrifying desert animals (bark scorpions, tarantula hawks, desert centipedes, velvet ants, blister beetles, tHE LIST GOES ON) on multiple occasions, he has a high pain tolerance

despite that, one time he got bitten by a gila monster and thought death was coming for him because it hurt so bad

he collects shed snakeskins and cactus skeletons that he finds, and gets excited whenever he finds fallen cactus blossoms

Keith wears gloves so his hands don’t get full of cacti spines!

he has a family of gila woodpeckers who live in a saguaro near his shack and he checks up on them daily

one of keith’s favorite things to do/rituals is to watch the desert sunset. no matter what, he stops what he’s doing to watch it [insert sad missing shiro hc here]

KEITH LOVES MONSOONS. thunder, lightning, flash floods are less fun but he loves to climb to a high point and just watch as the landscape is transformed

Keith is less fond of haboobs (dust storms, but c’mon, if I have the opportunity to call them haboobs I’m calling them that), to understand the full experience of a haboob please watch this video of a haboob ruining a wedding it’s probably one of the best videos ever

Keith knows some Spanish. One of the popular hc’s in the fandom that bothers me is that Keith knows zero spanish, none at all, which makes no sense for Texan Keith or Arizonan Keith. He knows some, in the very least knows how to pronounce Spanish words (i.e. Gila, saguaro, javelina)

he also fucking loves fry bread, it’s cheap, easy, and delicious

Keith has low tolerance for cold weather. Like, 70 degrees is considered cool for a lot of people here, 85 is a nice day, 100 is pretty hot, 105 is bearable, it gets to 110+ every summer. He has even lower tolerance for humidity, it’s a dry heat.

Keith has never seen snow (or at least, not like REAL east coast snow)

Keith wishes he had a swimming pool. He makes do with the nearby river, though, even if the water is kind of brown, in 115 degrees you make do
