dodger whines beside you as you finish your breakfast, obviously waiting to see if you'll drop some food for him

“i guess since your dad’s not here,” you give in, dropping a tiny piece of bacon for him

the house is eerily quiet without chris there, something you haven't experienced before, having only moved in with him a month ago

“better get used to this pal, just you and me for three weeks,” you continue talking to the dog

as you're cleaning up the mess you made, the doorbell rings, stopping you in your tracks

you wait a couple seconds before going to the door to check it out, but looking out the window you see a box on the front step, so you quickly carry it into the house

“from chris?” you read out loud, laughing a little

you sit on the floor to open it, dodger taking a seat beside you, too curious to ignore what's going on

“god damn it,” you mumble as a bunch of shredded packaging paper falls out of the box upon opening it

but you can't stay mad about the mess as you dig through to see what's inside

on top of everything else is a sweatshirt of his that you always steal causing you to huff, “huh, i was wondering where this went”

he also included some of your favorite snacks, and some cheesy homemade coupons for when he gets back home – “one night of chris cooking dinner” and “one evening of chris doing the dishes”

there's also some self care stuff – sheet masks, candles, a note saying “take care of yourself while i'm gone”, and a bath & body works gift card with another note, “stock up on those smelly bath things you like”

you're damn near in tears, but laugh when the last thing at the bottom is a new toy for dodger, the dog promptly taking it from your hand when you offer it to him

as if on cue, your phone lights up with his contact picture, signaling he's facetiming you

you clear your throat before answering, greeting him with the smile you can't get off your face

“hey sweetheart,” he smiles back at you. “what are you up to?”

“oh, not much,” you sigh, flipping the camera to show the box in front of you. “just opening this package from my boyfriend”

“did he send anything good?”

“of course, chris,” you laugh, flipping the camera back on you. “you didn't need to do this. how did you even do this? you just left last night”

“i had scott drop it off,” he chuckles

“you're perfect,” you whisper, not trusting your voice

“i'm not perfect,” he shrugs. “i just love you”

you tilt your phone back so he doesn't see the few tears that fall

“i love you too, thank you,” you eventually say, putting yourself back into view, and you both sit quietly for a few moments. “it's really quiet here without you”

“well is dodger keeping you company like i told him to? put him on-”

“he's doing great,” you assure him. “had breakfast with me and everything”

“i miss you,” he says quietly

“i miss you too,” you smile sadly. “i'll be sure to take care of your house”

“our house,” he corrects you

and you repeat his words happily – “our house”
