sometimes when i'm consuming media i like to make timelines of what's happening so that i can understand/keep track of it better

for several months now i've had a faded timeline of The Sword in the Stone Part 1 on my window right in front of where I sit every day and. well.

Day 2 - Elyan is tortured to the limit of human endurance. Arthur gets peasant clothes.

the ending of merlin 4x13 will never fail to piss me off. because there’s nothing like watching a perfectly good queer ship get fucked over for the straight one again...

Dazzling sunlight turns the unpaved red-dust streets of the lower town to fine bronze. From the head of the main road to its tail, children and elders alike hang halfway out of open doors by the frames and tug back window curtains with such frantic and eager force that they rip free of their hooks and tumble down upon their unsubdued owners. Laborers and craftspeople lay down their tools and abandon their fields, their workshops, their patrons’ homes to join the throngs in fixing their eyes on the path down from the mountain keep. Buzzing whispers flit back and forth among the gathered folk as bees might be observed going about their daily labors:

The new king is coming.

The wait seems a glad yet restless eternity. Not a single mind lingers on doubts of the ruler’s imminent descent to walk among the peasantry and offer greetings and accept much-earned laudation; they only hope the descent will be more imminent rather than less, on the scale of such things. With baited breath, they wait until finally, finally, the rhythmic pat of footsteps much like anyone else’s in volume and pitch yet distinct, unmistakable in some manner by which the townspeople swear they would know who approached even if the sound was not swallowed in its entirety by a pair of cheerfully redundant trumpets heralding the monarch’s arrival.

This vision greets the citizens of Camelot as it sweeps through the town:

A pair of simple, well-cut trousers tucked into freshly polished though obviously well-loved boots. A long white linen tunic whose hemline rustles in the spring breeze on the one side, the other pinned down by a radiant golden sword belted at the hip. Overtop, a cloak of deep scarlet - the finest article in the ensemble, aside from the sword - embroidered with swirling starbursts and swooping dragons done in shimmery gold thread. Finally, a familiar freckled face and flyaway dark curls topped with a crown of minute ivory flowers rather than the standard one of metal; a heartstring-yanking smile that, just a few short weeks ago, many feared they would never see again.

She is ours, now, irrevocably. She cannot be sent away.

LITERALLY MADE THE PIRATE KING SHE WAS THAT GOOD. all the other characters had some kind of teaching that gave them their skills, Elizabeth fights her way into it and shows she’s earnt it by being absolutely terrifying with a sword. Literally gets married mid sword fight which is all you really need to know.

Morgana

She looks really awesome with a sword

Okay yes later on she turns more to the evil magic offensive but early seasons Morgana??? Canonically better than Literal King Arthur till she was stopped from regularly practicing, swinging her sword and killing people with ease and bantering all the while; The corridor scene. 4x13 34:37 to 34:57. When she’s walking down the hall in her black dress and full witch look and taking out the knights with just such Ease and Casualness and then it ends with her turning and the tapestry behind her lines up to give her the black Angel wings??? Omg. Changed my life. Never wanted to be someone more and never will again. Just. Go watch the scene guys omg.

Yeah tbh, everything with Season 5 is ://///// Everyone and everything is so off and all they care about is arriving at Camlann and none of it feels authentic or earned to me. Like never mind the fact that this show was supposed to be a prequel to the legendary King Arthur days, everyone has these moments of acting so OOC just to push this weird unearned plot line. I have issues with Season 4 but I prefer to think the show ended with 4x13 and just ignore everything with Season 5 lol.

And about Gwen - nah it’s still a shit show I’ve been around since 2008 and this fandom has never talked about or treated her properly. They never will apparently but at least Angel doesn’t have to cop the vitriol directly to her face anymore.

yeah it really was just a push to DOTD and on one hand that finale has been the plan since s1 and i actually like DOTD because of past set-ups from previous seasons

however, all of it comes at a cost of some solid character building in s5

s4 ends with the sword in the stone legend and a (sort of) repeat “take back the castle” from s3’s finale that cements Arthur as King Arthur. so, i totally get your thoughts of “yeah, bbc merlin ends here for me” because it completes the build up to King Arthur and leaves the rest of his reign up to our interpretation

but then s5 comes around and where we are supposed to see how the Once and Future King’s reign’s been going, it sort of shows us that “yeah, sure, Arthur’s made some changes and allies but also not much has changed from s4 and magic is still presented as the evil antagonist and now we are one a faster countdown bc Camlann soooooooooo”

idk man :/ like i want to like s5 bc DOTD was so good (bc of how much had been built up all 5 seasons) but also i have so many “what if” scenarios that are for changing a lot of s5’s plot lmao

like the ending was inevitable and they could have still reached it without making those narrative choices for s5. in my humble opinion of course
