Billboard Music & Money Keynote: Clive Davis And Charles Goldstuck
March 06, 2008
Regarding Kelly Clarkson’s desire to write her own songs: Davis said Clarkson's managers wanted her to write her own songs in an effort to capture additional publishing royalties, but noted the process doesn’t always yield hits. "Some of the best artists of all time didn't write their own songs," Davis said, citing Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, among others. Davis noted that Clarkson's past hits were collaborations, and he encouraged her to collaborate on at least six songs, after determining that the songs submitted weren’t as hit-driven as her previous works. Davis noted that her managers, at the time, resisted. Davis credited new manager Norvell Blackstock for having the "common sense and reasonability" to convince Clarkson to compromise. "She got a manager who understood the business." "To me, you always have to prove it, and the odds are always against you," he added. "I don't care how many No. 1 songs you've written in your career. Can you write the next one?"
