Vic Mignogna: A Love Story

I watched him grab her by the neck and pull her hair down, pulling her backwards and leaning in close. He hissed into her ear like a cartoon snake. She was not into it. A little bit of awkward laughter, and she was gone. It was gross. It was unsettling. It changed my life. I was a guest at the late, great BayouCon in Lake Charles, Louisiana. That’s not exciting news -- I worked on STAR TREK for about a decade, producing all kinds of fun stuff. I attended a lot of conventions as a young fan, so it’s been exciting to have a career that led me to attend conventions as a guest. I’ve done a lot of them -- I imagine that there are hundreds of signed copies of ‘How To Speak Klingon’ all over the world that are just on this side of being thrown away by Marie Kondo. I remember brushing my teeth that morning and doing mental preparations for the day ahead. There were other guests, and I was looking forward to meeting them. The guest of honor was Vic Mignogna. I’d never heard of him, but that’s not a surprise. Even then, it had been at least a decade since I had anything to do with animation in any way and even longer since I’d been a regular viewer of anime. I think the last anime I saw was Gunsmith Cats. That’s not to say that Vic wasn’t popular. The guy had super-long lines. His talks were packed. A lot of people came out to that con because he was there. I got to meet Vic outside of the convention crush, which was nice. From time to time (and especially at smaller conventions) the guests will sometimes get a break from the crush and get a chance to chat a little. He seemed nice, and was totally fine with me asking him how to pronounce his last name. Another guest was Orion’s Envy, a four-lady team of dancers and dance instructors that painted themselves head-to-toe in bright and glittery green, cosplaying as Orion slave girls from STAR TREK’s original series. They were completely amazing and super-fun. I’d get to see them a lot after Saturday night, because that’s when Vic grabbed one of them, pulled her down and hissed in her ear. From that moment forward, Orion’s Envy was using the ‘buddy system’ to make sure that none of them were alone in a room with him. Since Vic and I were on different tracks at the convention, we were usually programmed against each other. I was where Vic wasn’t, so Orion’s Envy spent a lot of time with me that weekend. I don’t really know Vic. We’re acquaintances at best. I have his number in my cellphone, but we never talk. Here’s where it gets crazy: I sincerely believe that he didn’t understand the way that his behavior has made people feel. I don’t think he wants anyone to feel hurt or afraid. But they do. 

A lot of them do. Over the years, as stories of Vic’s behavior got back to the green gossip girls, I’d get a text or a Facebook message from them. Oh, this guy again? And again. And again. Once in a while they’d ask me something about audio work or if they needed some clever ad copy, but it was mostly Vic stories, since we’d had the shared experience. Three years after BayouCon, yet another Vic story caused my phone to buzz. It was Orion’s Envy. Two of them were at a dance workshop in Kansas City. One text led to another, which led to more texting (and margaritas) and more texting (thank you, buffalo wild wings) became a long-distance relationship. It’s been a couple of years, but my incredible girlfriend Neysha lives with me in Arizona now, and we would have never forged a friendship that became a romantic relationship without Vic’s stupid and inappropriate behavior toward her friend and dance partner. I shared this story with a few friends, and then to folks on Twitter that were saying that no one had ever seen Vic act inappropriately and that all the stories were fake.

They were wrong.

They told me that Vic was ‘lawyering up’ and I’d better watch what I said.

My girlfriend said that I needed to write this, and that I needed to share the story to more than just con staff, friends and family over the years -- That maybe hearing it from a known quantity in the industry would help. That maybe hearing it from a old white guy could help. That my non-reactive approach and honesty might help.  I hope it does.

28. Bulma (Swimsuit)

Year: 2012 Event(s): Bayoucon 2012

Details: Not really much of a costume, but it’s on the list so here it is! A friend was doing a beach shoot and invited me to come along in costume. I’d had this blue swimsuit for years and decided pairing it with my Bulma wig would be perfect. The photoshoot was a horrid experience because random people on the beach kept running up to photobomb us, but in the end, the photos made me feel truly beautiful.

Coming home from the convention for me was being frazzled, tired and just wanting to unload the van and deal with it in the morning. Lise comes in all happy with her pinwheel and con swag that people on the last day GAVE to her. I kid you not. And Gir going IMMEDIATELY to the Geek Cave - AFTER unloading the van - to put his prized items up. For Father’s Day I got him The Legend of Zelda Master Sword, Link Shield and Matching hat for a deal and he let lise put it on first, I was quite happy. I bought a headband from the table across from us and she was given a smaller one to fit, then an elsa apron cape and wonder woman tote bag and I am like HOLY COW this kid is cute without trying!.....this could go badly. But in other news I did well, sold some of Twootie Tartes soaps!

BayouCon 2015

BayouCon advertised to be an anime, Sci-fi, comics, and gaming convention; and it definitely lived up to it. The guest list was nothing short of spectacular and the fun and games available throughout the weekend were a “must attend”. BayouCon had many sci-fi, anime vendors and panels, as well as the artist alley being full…

I went to Bayou Con and made so many new friends which included the hot flowerneki who cosplayed as Sebastian Michaelis and made me blush profusely when he caught me as I fell over while putting my heels back on. Also the fabulous phantomhiveatthedisco who was a perfect Alois Trancy that I came in second to in the cosplay contest in our category as walk ons. I also met the awesome Todd Habberkorn who was really funny and nice and gave me hugs and he signed his name on my sword and then wrote "I signed the murder weapon!" On it. Todd was so great. Just in case you can't tell, I was Fem!Dean and on Sunday I was a Dark Huntress. Jasper, Lizzie, I am so sorry that I took longer to post this than I intended. But better late than never, right? I love you guys!

27. Poison Ivy - Batman

Year: 2012 Event(s): Bayoucon 2012 Details: This costume came to be in the era of “I NEED A NEW COSTUME FOR EVERY CON!!!!” I had my first guest appearance at a two day convention and was planning on driving up the night before. They e-mailed me asking to be there BY Friday night to do a meet-n-greet. Not even an hour before it was time to leave to head to the con to get there in time, I decided to suddenly make a Poison Ivy costume since I had a wig (which I didn’t brush) and some green shoes. I zoomed to Walmart, bought some really pretty green fabric on sale, zoomed back to my house, took some quick measurements, and pooped out this costume. It was literally two panels sewn together with a zipper in back. (And hemmed, of course) I’m pretty sure the friend I was riding to the con with just had the thing of leaves in the back of her car, haha. I wore black tights which the internet constantly harassed me for, but I thought they looked good so who cares.

So I was asked to take a photo as I was walking around yesterday with my clone trooper friend. So him and I pose for the photo. A starfleet officer and a clone trooper... Imagine that... So as were waiting for the guy to take the picture, here comes Darth Vader behind us and ends up photobombing us. How amazing is that!
