Mt. Tamalpais

Looming in the distance during our Bay Model tour stood Mount Tamalpais. Linda Holm, our amazing tour guide and member of the Army Corps of Engineers, mentioned how the peak is considered a sacred space and that the Dalai Lama is known to visit it. In fact Mt. Tamalpais (or Mt. Tam) has meant many things to many different people over the years. The original people here, the Coast Miwok, gave it it's name, meaning "west hill." The European settlers believed that Miwok legend had it that there was an evil presence on the mountain which was why they never set foot there, when in reality the Miwoks made up the story to keep the settlers away from Mt. Tam. Eastern philosopher, Alan Watts, had a home on Mt. Tam which he used for reflection and meditation. In the late 1970's there was a serial killer, David Carpenter, who used Mt. Tam as his hunting grounds. Today, the mountain is considered a symbol of Marin County. I cannot say what exactly it is that draws so many people to Mt. Tamalpais, but while standing in its shadow I certainly feel the pull of it like so many others have before me. (Janelle)
