I have decided that when we are given the all clear from the pandemic and it feels safe, and I have a little bit of money, I'm going on a road trip to Northern California to see as many #DavidPark paintings as I possibly can. My #1 exhibit to see in 2020 was the @sfmoma show of his work and I'm still very sad about not being able to see it. I do not want to have to wait decades for a show like this again. (Also, damn you, Instagram for your weird cropping!) Richard Diebenkorn by Temma Nanas - Richard Diebenkorn is widely known and associated with the Bay Area Figurative movement of the 1950s and 60s that took place in Northern California. But it's his iconic Ocean Park compositions configuring light, color and geometry for which he is perhaps most revered. - This series was made across two decades from 1967 to 1988 drawing on Diebenkorn's time spent living in Southern California, on the edge of the West Coast in Santa Monica's Ocean Park neighborhood. At that time, this area was the run-down outer limits of Los Angeles and many artists lived there taking advantage of the very cheap rents. - The Ocean Park paintings are entirely about light and expertly possess all of its incandescent and lyrical nature; the way in which it can be architectural and geometric, but also effusive, soft and atmospheric. - Untitled, 1977 is an elegant example of the latter, painted with gouache on paper. Diebenkorn's palette ranges from subtle to saturated throughout the series, nodding to his deep influence of Henri Matisse. - The colors in this particular work are seductive and quiet, flushed with striking blushes of magenta and cool blue-gray washing over the aerial linear demarcations of the landscape. ​Before his passing, Nathan Oliveira long dreamed of a quiet space where visitors could come and meditate while surrounded by his Windhover paintings of birds suspended in flight. Three years ago this month, ground finally broke and construction began for the Windhover Contemplative Center on the campus of Stanford University with the direction of Aidlin Darling Design. It opened in October of 2014.

The project was recognized this year by the American Institute of Architecture as a premier work of American Architecture, winning the Excellence in Architecture Honor Award.
