Mai Tai experience 2024
Adventures of 60 somethings on board a catamaran.
On the 31st of January 2024, we became the proud owners of a Lagoon 400 2010 model, located in Opua New Zealand.
On the 27th of February, after a few family engagements, we flew to Auckland and drove 3 hours to Opua Marina, gathering some simple supplies on the way. I felt so cold and exhausted when we arrived that I nearly cried at the thought of living on this small, damp and smelly boat for the next 5 years. What had we done, we had a perfectly good life in a house. Why why why?
The next day was better.
28th February 2024, we sorted out a few things and organized a few others. Where to put clothes, towels, and did we have enough. Sheets were on board, but I threw most out as they were thin and barley reuseable. I started a list of things to but for us and the boat to be comfortable and livable for the nextâŚ..years?
So first trip in our hire car to Whangarei, (Pronounced Foneray) we found Spotlight, Countdown, Kmart and Bunnings. We loaded up and drove the 1 hour back to Opua.
1st March 2024: Next day we though we would take her for a spin and charge batteries and empty the black water tank, (the wee and poo tank). So we got out to open water and came into the bay of Russell. Lovely little spot but the anchor wouldnât go down, so I suggested David just drive around and Ill cook breakfast/brunch.
So we did that and headed back to the marina. On our approach, on an outgoing tide, she was hard to handle. The birth spot was big enough for a catamaran but not big enough for us to park in with our limited experience and a tide that wanted to push us where we did not want to go. So I am running around the deck shouting directions to David. More like, âSTOP, YOUR GOING TO HIT THE WHARFâ. More things like, âOh what the FUCK, we are going to crashâ. Came out of my mouth on several occasions. We had the neighbours, folk from boats near us, on the dock along with the harbor master Shane. He was speaking calmly to David about pulling back and not so heavy on the power, but I donât think he could hear him over my screaming, âWe are going to crash.â
Yes we hit the dock and crushed our port side sugar scoop with an indent of about 25cm long and 10cm deep. Not too much damage to the boat but our self esteem was shattered, and I was a nervous wreck. One of our neighbours from a boat named Scallywag, was on the dock to console us. He had just had a similar experience and the tide pushed him into the bow spirt of another boat punching a hole in the side of his 50 ft catamaranâŚ..Ouch.
2nd March 2024: Olly the previous owner came by and he sorted out the windlass, (anchor) not working problem. He said he cleaned up some loose wiring and maybe some got lost in the process and he unplugged the windlass. Not sure but he got it going and answered a lot of David's questions. We told him about our encounter with the dock and he said, âYou know what they say, âYou havenât been around if you havenât run agroundâ. Iâm not sure if that made me feel better but, there you have it.
3rd March 2024: We gathered up our torn confidence and broken dreams decided we had to get back on the horseâŚ.so to speak. So out we went for another attempt at having fun on our new boat. This time we dropped the anchor in Russell, and I just put the kettle on when the afternoon storm that was expected at 1pm came early and interrupted our 10am brunch. So up came the anchor and we headed back to the marina. Before we even arrived my stress levels were off the chart. But we listened to Shane and came in on a slack tide and we managed to berth Mai Tai without incident. This was cause for celebration, so we had a shower and went into Paihia for dinner and a bottle of wine.
8th March 2024: Flew back to Sydney for my 60th birthday cruise on board Celebrity Edge to âŚ..of all places, New Zealand. During this cruise we saw parts of the South Island and the sounds that were absolutely breath taking. The enormity of these places that we could now explore in our own boat! So we decided to skip the Rally to Fiji this year and explore New Zealand for 12 months. Plus we are not experienced enough in operating our boat yet. We need time and some nautical miles before we conquer open water.

Day Forty-four
The midges were trying to make themselves known last night as the wind died down, but with the tent all setup for a beautiful view I was safe and sound and allowed myself a bit of a lie in after all the work yesterday, and knowing the elevation profile for today!
Up and off, it's a twisty up-and-down road past Loch Shieldag and around the rest of Loch Shieldag before emerging from the trees on to the small bay at Ardheslaig.
It's a stiff climb up from here around the side of some sheer cliffs, with an amazing view over Loch Torridon.
Around the corner of the cliffs, we start on a looping, rolling road along the rest of the north side of the peninsula. I'd been anticipating a lot of hard work here, but the road gifts some lovely cruises downhill and the turns aren't so sharp that the momentum is allowed to be used to charge up the next climbs, making progress quite enjoyable through the moorlands with Lewis and Harris in the distance.
Passing Fearnmore, it's a swing south to be greeted with a lovely view of the islands of Rona and Raasey over the water, with Skye rising up behind them.
Following on the road southward, the end of Raasey is invisible behind a torrential downpour that is heavy enough to be opaque. The wind though, after days of tough headwinds, jas finally turned to a favourable tailwind, and I catch onky a very fine drizzle as I pass it by around Applecross Sands.
Rounding the south corner is a great view across to the rest of the coast and the bay with the river Applecross flowing out from the mountainsides, which is cruised over as we roll into Applecross village, where I get to see a stag grazing by the road not giving a single care about passersby!
Having a good sit whilst cooking dinner yesterday at Shieldag helped provide me with a bit of centering. For much of this adventure, I'd taken a lot of enjoyment in ploughing through the miles, but the constant hills here put a hard limit on that, and I think I had allowed it to subconsciously intrude on the enjoyment of the journey. Which is foolish, and required a slight shift in perspective.
So, given the amount of climbing over the last few days, and with a mighty ascent coming up after Applecross, I've had a good early finish to the day and booked into a cheap campsite here for a couple of nights for a bit of R&R, which the muscles will surely appreciate! And it's with much love to the irreplaceable @annatrekkie for a generous tip for this stay!
I have to say, Applecross Campsite is outstanding considering how affordable it is. After pitching up I've had a lovely steaming hot shower in onenof the best toilet & shower blocks I've encountered in years of camping - they even have grey water reclamation!
It's also the first time in quite a while that I've been able to have a good look at myself in a big mirror, and damn. Six weeks of cycling has certainly had its effects - whilst my hands have been callousing up, I've definitely been getting leaner and even have the top of a six pack starting to emerge. And the legs have never looked better.
I'm currently treating myself to a nice sit by the waterside enjoying a pint of the excellent local ale, and may even go for a good fish & chips before retiring and having a very chill and relaxing day tomorrow.
Back on Sunday!

2023 Bahamas cruise, Part 20. April 22. Cat Island, not Cat Cay!
Cat Island at the highest point of all the Bahamas, Mountain Alvernia 206 ft. above sea level. The mountain is worthy of being named after. On Monday, I got a ride back from the car rental by âAlverniâ.
When we weâre approaching Cave Cay from the west, we heard a faint VHF call to/from âBay Windâ a buddy boat from last year. I was able to find them on the AIS (Automatic Identification System). No answer on VHF when we called, so I emailed them where we were at and our plans.
They emailed back and we said we were headed to Cat Island in the morning. After looking at the weather, they changed their plans from heading to George Town, Exuma. To meet us in Cat Island. During the evening a wind blew up from the South West. Above are photos from the exact anchorage a year ago when we last saw them.
We weathered a huge lightning storm during the night. All the portable electronics go in the microwave, incase of a lighting strike. Later we heard friends of George and Lisa were hit by lighting that night in Nassau.
George and Lisa had moved north to Black Point in the afternoon when winds starting picking up. So we left Galliot Cay cut at daybreak with both an out going tide and a tailwind. Flat calm and we had a current helping us. Flat calm 50 mile run to New Bight, Cat Island. Winds were light and behind us as we motored at 5.3 knots. Raise the main sail. No increase in speed. BangâŚbangâŚbang. Lower the mainsail.
Winds seem to pick up. Raise the mainsail. BangâŚ.bangâŚbang. Tie the boom hard to a midship cleat to stop the banging. Still no increase in speed. Lower the mainsail. We do that 5 times.
The ugly side of cruising. Throwing our cans in the ocean.
We hate seeing bottles thrown on the side of the road here in the Bahamas. But as humans we produce trash. What do we do with it?Cruising you are a little more tied to your trash and where it goes. On some islands we walk our bag of trash down a road to the dump. It will be burned at some point. Some islands we pay a couple of bucks for someone else to do the dirty work. But our trash still ends up on a small island to be dealt with. Some trash burns, but cans and bottleâs donât.
We collect our cans into a canvas bag Nancy sewed up. While snorkeling we collect bottles in the anchorage and put them in the bag. One of the accepted methods to deal with cans and bottles is to dump them in the deepest part of the ocean where no one will see them.
Is that really the answer? Just because no one will see them? Above you will see the method that we have used. Taking paring shears, I cut an extra hole in the top. Then 2 in the bottom, 90 degrees from the ones on the top. As we sail over 5,000 ft. of water we throw them over to sink within 200 ft. of being thrown overboard.
A squall developed close aboard, while the mainsail was up. Small squall, and we were right at the end of it. WaitâŚ.waitâŚHARD TO PORT. Nose into the gust of wind. After 3 minutes turn and run towards Cat Island. That worked out well. It almost looked like I knew what I was doing.
Notice how skillfully I color coordinated my shirt with the ocean color of the day. Trolled a triple plastic skirt behind the boat. The rig was made for us by Neil from Wales. The other rig he made us, was a cedar plug. When we trolled it a month ago it was cut off by some toothy fish within 15 minutes.
This 30â Cow Dolphin hooked herself and never pulled out the drag. Not sure how long this fish was dragged behind the boat, until Nancy saw it back there. Seas were calm enough we got the Dolphin on the boat. Now what do we do? No place to work killing or cleaning the fish. By wrapping its head in a cloth they stop flopping around. Stick a knife in its brain, or at least somewhere close. Then proceed to filet it at ankle level and not drop the slippery fish or knife over the side.
Mission accomplished. Been 50 years since I caught a Dolphin. It was enough for 2 dinners for the two of us. Shortly after putting the same rig out we caught a smaller Dolphin. But we released it and stowed the fishing rig. George had caught a similar size Dolphin, plus fought something large for an hour before it popped the line. Guessing a large tuna or wahoo.
The first morning at Cat Island took our trash to the old government dock, then across the street to a place for trash. George and Lisa met us for a day of walking around New Bight.
Here Nancy is walking up the 12 stations of the cross trail, to the âHermitageâ. In 1906 after a hurricane damaged several churches in the Bahamas. Father Jerome was sent to design and help build churches here. After several years and multiple beautiful churches he retired to Cat Island. At his request he was awarded the highest point in the Bahamas, 206 ft. Mt. Alvernia. Two acres of land at the top of the mountain were sold by the descendants of slavery to the Catholic Church. Father Jerome built the Hermitage in 1936, it looks larger than what it is. Everything is 3/4 scale, so watch your head!
The Hermitage.
Here is Duke Moss at work. He owns âDukes Conch shackâ. Nancy and I ordered the âTropical conch saladâ. Which is a pineapple and mango conch salad. George and Lisa went with the traditional conch salad but spiced up. Duke takes your order, then walks across the street and out into the water. He has a pen full of live conch there. After retrieving what he needs, he walks them back and stands on the outside of the conch shack. Duke quickly cleaned the conch, making it look super easy. He confessed to us, that this was the first conch he ever cleaned. We called him on that statement. Actually it was the first conch he cleaned today. These guys are natural jokers. Duke was in the Royal Bahamas Defense Force for a few years. Then tried âFishingâ in Cat Island. âFishingâ means both conching and fin fishing. Then he worked on the mailboats. In between trips he would fish. After a while some old timers showed him how to up his game.
Bahamian rebar! These guys were building a food shack. Many had burned down a couple of years ago. The main wooden beams were placed in holes with cement footers.
Who needs a wheel barrow? The dry cement is poured on the road and water mixed in by shovel, then they carry it over to the forms by bucket. To reduce the amount of cement needed and give it some structure. They throw conch shells in the holes with the cement. Bahamian rebar!
Two degrees of separation on Cat Island. We had watched a YouTube video made by âCharlie Bahamaâ about Cat Island. He had interviewed an old guy who played Rake and Scrape on an accordion. While eating at Dukes. I spot the old guy across the street. So we go over and talked to âPompeyâ Johnson. We get on the subject of schools and sports, when I remember a guy we met in Bimini a couple of months ago was from this island. I describe him to âPompeyâ. He says, âyou talking about Kirkâ? Yeah, that was his name. âPompeyâ points down the road to the guy mixing the concrete, and says, âthats Kirks dadâ. So we go down and talk to him a bit.
Sea Breeze New Bight, Cat Island, Bahama.

Kalymnos to Kos
A beautiful but tough ride this morning. I really had to be careful not to overindulge in the gf pancakes knowing we had 1600m of climbing in 60km.
But first I finally managed a now belated Mothers Day call with Mum. Itâs the first opportunity Iâve had to speak with her since the Mums left us over 2 weeks ago.
So we did a loop of the island and the scenery was stunning. I didnât take as many photos as I would have liked as I always seemed to be going either uphill or downhill.
We stopped for coffee in a lovely little village right on the water. There was some sort of ceremony going on that involved women and a priest, he seemed to be blessing something. Anyway we had to keep the volume down over our coffee. Most people had frappes as the day had got quite warm.
After coffee it was back to the boats for lunch and then a cruise to a bay for a swim. While we were there Jo and Tony got out one of their foiling bikes for people to try (with mixed success). For us it was lovely to see Kayla, Loges and Elliot again.
After our swim stop we headed on to Kos. Kos is the birthplace of Hippocrates and not a bad place to stop. After we moored we headed off for a wander and of course ended up (this time with a few others) with an ouzo before heading back to the boat for dinner.
Another lovely evening capped off first by a history talk from Sam and secondly by having our fortunes told from the remains of our Turkish coffee (mine was a bit rosier than Joseâs đ).
Another big day and now time for bed đ´

Riding the contentment wave on our own boat.
.....and then things happen that you didn't plan for.
22nd April 2024: Planning day to see if we should go out to the Bay of Islands and just stay for a few nights. We saw that the wind was great today and practically non existent for the rest of the week, so we untied our ropes and let loose into the beautiful bay. The winds were just enough to let us cruise at 5 to 6 knots, but Mai Tai has a mind of her own and turned into the wind on several occasions making me panic and David wonder why she was not steering where we wanted her to go.
So we sailed around in circles for a while and then went back to the mooring, then into the town of Russell for pizza.
23rd April 2024: Today we are going out into the wild blue Bay of Islands for a few days. We first motored to the fuelling dock and re fuelled 7X20 litre diesel containers. This was tricksy as they took up a lot of room in the dinghy and then we had to get on too. We made it back safe and unleashed Mai Tai and motored out towards Army Bay.
No wind as forecast so we had a relaxing time motoring. While I was on the dolphin seat looking for any signs of wildlife, David saw a 3 meter bottle nose dolphin just next to the helm. He called out and I just saw him as he went for a dive. He was huge.
Once anchored, we went ashore and had a walk up to the look out and a great view of the bay and Mai Tai. It was a tad worm at the beach so when we got back I went for my first swim. It was chilly but I just love the water. What a great day.
24th April 2024: Our anchor held all night so I was grateful for that. We went ashore for some more exploring and discovered another part of the bay. Walked to the top and saw some squatters in tents on the side of the hill. But the bird life is something else.
On our way back disaster struck. David was letting the outboard motor down off the lift and it fell back and caught his finger. I saw by the look on his face as he said, "I need help", it was serious. I expected the whole finger to be inside the clamp. Shit, so I got out and helped him lift the engine off his hand. I saw it was still attached so that was a good thing. He said, I'm alright just caught my finger. So we got it the dinghy and started back for the boat. So this little catch on his finger started to leak blood everywhere all over the boat. I handed him a cloth shopping bag to wrap around it and quell the bleeding. It helped till we got back to Mai Tai and I had a proper look. David caught his right index finger in the clamp and it tore through the fleshy part, missing the tendon and bone by millimetres.
This needed stitching. I applied first aid, cleaning, stopped the bleeding and wrapped his hand up until a doctor could see it.
Now we had the job of getting back to Russell from Army Bay. I called a cab and booked him in for,,,,of all days, Anzac Day. Then planned to get us back to Russell. Pulled up the anchor, and motored back fine. Picked up our mooring and relaxed.
Get a boat they said, It will be fun they said.
25th April 2024:
Anzac day for us this year was a little different. We drove the dinghy to the wharf, caught the Russell ferry to Paihia and met Geoff, our taxi driver. He was wearing a Trump hat saying make America great again and he was a pommy. He drove us to Kawa Kawa Hospital where, I was happy to see no one else around. The doctors made quick work of applying 7 stitches and checking the tendon. They were fantastic and so helpful. I have been in a few emergency rooms with the kids and David and the staff here were great. I even scored a few extra bandages and first aid equipment to replenish what I used for David's hand. All done and back to Paihia for brunch. We were both exhausted so went back to Russell and back to Mai Tai. We did go to the pub later to have dinner and watch a dismal game by the dragons. But that was it.
Lest we forget.
So after a busy few days I have found that living on a boat is no different to living in a house. Shit happens and you deal with it. Make the most of your time while you can and count your lucky stars and fingers if all of your days go to plan.

2023 Bahama Cruise, Part 29. May 14. Hatchet bay, Eleuthera.
Nancy walking two miles back to town after snorkeling with the seahorses on Motherâs Day. Still smiling after another tour that can not be found in the tour pamphlets.
We anchored on Saturday evening with threats of storms over night and Sunday. Never got rained on. We are anchored in âHatchet Bayâ on the right side of the photo. Sweetings Pond with the Seahorses is the pond on the left of the photo.
After taking our trash to town. We walked around the town on Motherâs Day, Sunday morning. Things are quiet on Sunday mornings in the settlements. We walked up to the Queenâs Highway and turned east or left. A driver stopped his car and talked to us. He was the owner of the restaurant where everyone, including us, parks their dinghy. The sign above the trash barrel was pay $3 in the office. The office was closed. When this guy introduced himself, he said he owned the restaurant. So we paid this guy our $3 for one bag of trash. He also offered to drive us to the Sweetings Pond Seahorse Preserve for $20.
We enjoy our walks and declined the offer. After we were half way to the pond. A guy stopped in his pick up truck and offered us a ride. So Nancy and I jumped in the back of his pick up truck. Looking at the boxes of roofing nails in the bed of the truck, we assumed he was a roofer. After he pulled off across from the dirt road to the pond. We bailed out of the back of the truck and thanked him. With typical Bahama out island hospitality. He said, âThat is why we are here, to help you outâ. This guy was a Roofer, not a person in the tourism hospitality trade. But a genuine out island person always willing to help. Just about every Bahamian owned car honks or waves. The rental cars have a different license plate. Donât expect a honk or way from them.
This is the dirt road leading to Sweetings Pond. Good enough for a rental car, but not good enough for your personal car.
This is a proposed Preserve. The water is probably a bit more saline than the ocean and accounted for us floating so high in the water.
With our sandals and footwear, versus fins, per the rules. We had a bit of a time getting to the bottom to see the seahorses up close.
This pond was cut off from the open sea 6,000 years ago. The level changes with each tidal change. But the visibility is poor.
This is a Lined Seahorse (Hippocampus erectus). They are considered a âVulnerable speciesâ. These were not as obvious or as plentiful as we were led to believe. They were in the grass and usually head down foraging. This is probably a female, note the lack of the belly pouch.
You can just barely see the eye on this seahorse. Judging by the belly this is very possible a pregnant Male Seahorse. Who knew that âwokeâ seahorses where leading the way of males becoming pregnant? Actually the female becomes pregnant and then sends the eggs over to the male that raises them in his brood pouch.
The more interesting organism in the pond were the multitude of nudibranchs. Specifically Fringeback Dondice (Dondice occidentalis) They were everywhere and working along the top of the grass. Much more prolific than the seahorses.
Since my photo was so bad, I stole this off the internet.
This is the bright red file clam (Ctenoides Scraba) that was very abundant in the pond.
After walking back to town we saw that the car ferry from Nassau was in town. Top left photo has cars backing up onto the ferry.
The pigs in a trailer, are they coming or going, who knows? Can they swim? If they canât swim, will we see them at dinner?
This apparently is a communal cooking bread oven of days before. Makes sense, stays hot for hours, using less fuel than each house cooking bread in their private oven.
Next we pull anchor and head 16 miles west for the infamous âCurrent Cutâ. You have to time it for 1+15 to 1+30 minutes after the tide change in Nassau. If we hit it wrong, we may be fighting a 6-8 kt. current in a boat that only goes 6 knots.
