62. U.N.P.O.C. - Fifth Column (Fence, 2003)
Listen if you like: lo-fi singersongwriters
This is just one of the big mysteries in indie music. Tom Bauchop of the Scottish Fence collective creates a wonderful timeless album in 2003 with his alias U.N.P.O.C and then just seems to disappear from the music scene. His legacy? An almost perfect album with lo-fi pop gems that have an incredible live feel to it, and one that you can sing/shout along to. A true forgotten classic, which everyone should know.

Elizabeth Hill (SMITH) SMITH (Bessie) Elizabeth Hill SMITH, known as Bessie; was born in 1826, Laverockhall, KirkpatrickFleming, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and was christened on 24 August 1827 at KirkpatrickFleming, the daughter of Robert SMITH and Elizabeth MORRISON. Her first child, a daughter named Elizabeth (Bessie) SMITH, was born about 1852-1853 in Scotland. Young Bessie, who was also known as GALE, married William (Willie) BACHOP (BAUCHOP) in 1871 in Dunedin. She died in 1900 and is buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin. In the early 1850s Elizabeth and her daughter went to Victoria, Australia, quite likely with her brother John SMITH and his wife. Elizabeth senior married English man Henry GALE, on 3 September 1855 at Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Unfortunately, Henry drowned when he fell from a plank between a vessel and the wharf on 26 July 1859. He is buried in the Geelong Eastern Cemetery. Elizabeth and Henry had two children – Henry was born in 1856 and died in 1858. He is buried in the Geelong Western Cemetery; Frances (Fanny) Adelaide GALE who was born in 1858, married Robert SPARROW in 1882 at Dunedin, and died in 1934 at Waikari, North Canterbury, buried there. Elizabeth Hill SMITH married secondly, on 21 January 1861 at Geelong, ‘James SMITH’ who was born about 1826 in Ganzig, Prussia. James either anglicized his name or adopted the name of his friend – Elizabeth’s brother, John SMITH, or both. In 1862-1863 Elizabeth and James, with three girls – Bessie junior, Fanny and Carrie – came to Dunedin, New Zealand. Their daughter Caroline (Carrie) SMITH was born on 25 December 1861 near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. She married Thomas WILKINSON in 1882 at Dunedin. In the early 1890s Carrie and Thomas went their separate ways. She died in 1932 at Middlemarch and is buried in Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin. Three more children were born in Dunedin – James SMITH, who was born in 1864, married Anne GARDYNE in 1897, died in 1927, and is buried at Andersons Bay; John (Robert) SMITH, who was born in 1866, married Ada Jane TURNER in 1894 at Melbourne, Australia, and died in 1915 at Belmont, Western Australia, where he is buried in the Guildford Cemetery; and Flora SMITH, who was born in 1868, married James Anderson GORDON in 1891 and died in 1900 at Waikaka, Southland, where she is buried. In 1893 Elizabeth SMITH was living at Howe Street, Dunedin. She was predeceased by her husband, he dying on 9 February 1900. She died on 23 May 1902 at Dunedin and is buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin, the grave being of an irregular shape.
