Ooh, a bonus comic! This feels very fitting given the last Eleanor focused ask you answered. Jasper's expression is great, and I really love poor Eleanor there. Maybe it's just because she's usually such a ray of sunshine, but seeing her depressed/stressed like this is hilarious. And the Wojack (I think that's what those are called?) at the end just adds to the hilarity. Not that I'd want to see overwhelmed Eleanor all the time. But she can be stressed occasionally! You know. As a treat.

Also, thank you for that article! It's a really interesting look at how Jasper's developed to where it is now. It's not really something I'm familiar with, so it's a fun chance to learn something new. It also sheds quite a bit of light as to why Jasper is the way they are when compared to Eleanor—and of course, it does the same for the actual towns as well. Plus we get a fun comic out of it too!

This question was originally asked in like May of last year but my approach to the question would have been the same xD;

There was this cartoon that Coconut found ages ago that was like ‘how to spot an edmontonian at stampede’ and it was this dude with a cheap/fake cowboy hat eating a sausage with tin cans strapped to his feet for the appearance of cowboy heels (??????) and i think about it a lot. 

Despite living in Alberta for the majority of my life, I’ve actually never been to stampede. My dad who’s like 4th gen also has never been to stampede. It’s perhaps one of our big regretzkys. It would be fun to go in cosplay, I think, although my current hat is indeed a dollarama hat and my cowboy boots were bought at a Toronto winners...

1980 was a really chaotic year for Alberta but particularly for Calgary- I’ve even read the 80s called Calgary’s “traumatic” decade. If you’re watching Alberta throw a hissy fit day after day on the news over nothing, you’ve got to remind yourself that the NEP is still very fresh in people’s minds and that no one from AB/SK who remembers the fall out is going to consider Trudeau a good family name. 

And I mean yeah, a lot of it is still entitlement and unrealistic expectations about what boom times are “supposed” to look like, but it’s a little more complicated than ‘Alberta suddenly decides to separate because justin forgot their name on canada day and they now only have two trucks in their three truck garage’ which I feel is kind of how it gets spun sometimes. Not lending any validity to the separation movement myself, I’m just saying it’s still important to acknowledge the politics and people’s feelings because they’re still fresh for the west and it feels like the rest of canada is always surprised about things we’ve been mad about for decades.

Apologies for the dramatic change in font, I was annoyed at how thin the letters were and how wide the spacing was for my own font. I have enough challenges trying to do lettering with CSP, so I’m doing an experiment! The omakes are going to vary in style a lot because I’m messing around with different methods.

Calvin is very uncreative when it comes to design... or maybe he just chose good solid motifs a long time ago.

I don’t know anything about the Edmonton gothic phase but apparently we had one.

Ed is bitter about provincial > municipal hierarchy and always has been. He existed before the concept of provinces and has a strong independent streak. Calvin tends to have better relationships with provinces, but he also predated provincial government. 

As for cities, Toronto has a particular brand of national influence that is unusual from an American perspective- NYC wishes it was as influential. On the other hand, Toronto has a very nebulous influence that’s hard to pin down and doesn’t have as strong a civic identity as major American cities might- there’s a lot of mix up with municipal/provincial/national identity there. 

Before Toronto’s rise to prominence in the mid 20th century, Montreal swung a similar sort of influence across ‘Canada’ before it was even Canada. This was mostly because Montreal was the site of many company headquarters and the origin of many cross country trips, specifically the fur trade that drove economic and cultural relationships and the establishment of fur trading posts such as Edmonton. Unlike Toronto which tends to be portrayed as dull and emotionally cold, Montreal was and is still considered by many to be the heart and soul of the country.

Of course, the feelings of admiration are still tempered by feelings of western alienation and there’s still some bitterness towards central Canada despite it all. The same is true (to a degree) of American cities - Cal looked more towards them as a young’un than he did towards Canadian centres (such as Montreal or Winnipeg) and still has a tendency to prefer the company of his American friends.

I currently have about 20 asks in the box give or take, so if you’re still waiting for a question to be answered or you have no ideas, no pressure! I’ve got material to work with. :) I’ve also got a general outline of the next chapter, but I’m not positive when I will get to it at this point. Enjoy!

(It was the rainiest summer in Edmonton and I wasn’t there to enjoy it, alas! I’m still trying to deal with the fact that rain actually lasts all day in Toronto.)

You’ll have to tell me if I’m way off the mark here because I have literally no knowledge or experience of southern alberta that isn’t second hand (and the one night i stayed in a hotel in lethbridge on my way to the states doesn’t count), but this is the impression I’ve gotten from recent news. This is very surface level based on like... economic growth (or lack thereof), so obviously there’s more to it than that.

Lethbridge just surpassed Red Deer as the third biggest city, congrats!

Hello hello and happy love yyc day, Calgarians! I’m sorry for constantly dunking on my not-as-favourite son. I truly think it’s such a delicious irony that so many of my followers appear to be from Calgary/area and on this day I just want to give an extra special thank you for your patience while i’m constantly hazing him. 

Without Calgary there’d be no Battle, and with no Battle I suspect we’d have vanished into relative obscurity even longer ago. I’m happy that we have such a worthy rival to encourage us to be better together. That’s a rough idea of my thesis statement for this project, so I try to keep it in mind with everything I do. 

(cal’s birthday is november 7, he’s a scorpio. give him presents.)

I’m going away for reading week so I won’t have as much time to work on Battle of Alberta as I would like to, but I can confirm there are two pages left that are both in progress!
