As a theatre kid, I never would have made it in a Tiger Parent house.

I advise everyone to take this with a million grains of salt, but I think part of this whole "all chinese/asians parent like jc and yzy" maaaaaay have something to do with the book "battle hymn of the tiger mother" that came out in like? 2010 maybe? but as an asian diaspora myself I definitely saw/heard people around me going yeah, I'm sure those kids were upset with their mother's methods, but she sure got results, didn't she? This attitude existed before long then but the book and its reception kind of cast the Asian parent who hurts their child in some way to make them perform in a more sympathetic light, until it became both "the parent who is willing to cause pain is a good parent" and "we're too good and nicer to you than you deserve, since even better children than you need this kind of harsh treatment in order to do well."

The harsher parents were, the more respect they seemed to get from other adults in their community because they were willing to do "what it takes," and I think many young people from that generation (again, this was in no way unique, these attitudes have been around forever) internalized that until they couldn't identify abuse that came wrapped in a package with "I'm doing this for your own good" stamped on top.

No you are right as this was greatly pressed into the main stream (and specifically Asian diaspora American/Western side in the 2010's).

Yet ironically, this caused an actual widespread awareness within East Asian countries about the negative affects of this being downplayed and it correlating to high suicide rates for minors, internalization of depression, anxiety, and how this psychologically affects them as adults for the worse. Worth noting is that many medias that feature this now, do not show the parent in a positive or sympathetic fashion since at least 2015 in East Asian (not diaspora American/Western mind) communities.

There is still a very idealized and rose-colored portrayal of this parenting in American Diaspora spaces. And one that I definitely refuse to give benefit to.

Tiger Parenting Can Create High Achievers, but at What Cost? Experts Weigh In

It's been over a decade now since tiger parenting became a parenting buzzword with the release of Amy Chua's book "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" in 2011. In it, Chua details the strict way she was raising her two daughters and the academic and extracurricular achievements she expected them to have. While she may have popularized it, Chua didn't invent tiger parenting: the concept is similar to an "authoritarian" parenting style that's been around for decades. But she definitely got people talking about this intense style of child-rearing. So, what is tiger parenting? And is this firm approach worth it? Experts explain. What Is Tiger Parenting? Tiger parenting is a term coined in Western culture by Yale Law School professor and mom Amy Chua. As Chua explains in her book, her parenting style was inspired by Confucian virtues and philosophy, which emphasize strong personal ethics and morality. Her book also compared traditional Chinese and Western approaches to parenting. "It refers to a parenting style characterized by strict discipline, high expectations, and an intense focus on academic and extracurricular achievements," says Alisa Ruby Bash, PsyD, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Malibu, CA. "Tiger parents typically push their children to excel academically and often demand perfection in various aspects of their lives." There are a few hallmarks of tiger parents, according to the experts we polled: * High academic expectations: "Tiger parents set extremely high academic standards for their children, expecting them to excel in school and achieve top grades," Dr. Bash says. * Intense schedules: Children in tiger parenting households usually have tightly regimented schedules that include extensive study time and extracurricular activities, with little room for free play, social interactions, or relaxing, Dr. Bash says. * Strict rules: "Tiger parents enforce strict rules and discipline, with little tolerance for disobedience or excuses," Dr. Bash says. "This can be accompanied with physical or emotional disciplinary measures." * Focus on specific skills: Parents usually require their children to master certain skills, like musical instruments or sports.
