Here's my next entry for the @beauty-beast-week 2024,

Day 5: Dandelion – Fluff, wishes, children, stubbornness

One day in early autumn a gypsy community visited Villeneuve. They offered their beautiful crafts, stars reading and fortune telling. Belle was walking through the town when a lovely gypsy girl called her.

"Hey, beauty! Would you like to know your destiny?"

"Who can ever know it?" Belle got curious.

"My deck." Esmeralda, that was the girl's name, spread out the tarot in front of Belle.

"A pretty interesting fate awaits you, Belle. I see great adventures and grand love, but also dangerous sorcery and deception. Pretty contradictory, pretty."

"You know, I think I don't really believe in this." Belle shook her head.

"Time will tell." Esmeralda smirked.

While the camp remained in the town, the girls became friends, and Belle promised to visit Esmeralda in Paris one day. And this indeed happened when everything Esmeralda predicted has come true that winter.

This is my submission for Day 5 of Beauty and the Beast 2024. The theme of the day is Dandelion... and I took it literally :D

This digital painting was inspired by a dream I had a while ago, that was a clear combination of the dandelion scene in Belle Reprise, those pink flying flowers in Super Mario Galaxy... and probably the other flying flowers in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, since I remember playing that game the night before.

In the dream, I was with some other people, presumably some friends conjured up by my subconscious. Maybe we were kids, though I'm not entirely sure. We were catching a ride on huge flying dandelions whose seeds were gradually blowing away as we flew on them. Just for fun. Probably had to grab another dandelion once ours had no more seeds. The scenery was like in my illustration, a sunset and grassy hills. Similar to the original scene in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, but more yellow.

So I decided to insert Belle instead of myself and the other people. Well, she did say she wanted adventure in the great wide somewhere. Maybe this was what she imagined at that moment, fantasizing about just flying away from her provincial life. Either way I'm sure she would have loved to do something like this for fun.

That fateful night when Maurice left Paris in the grip of the plague, he took the two daughters with him. Alas, in all the panic and rush, Belle's older sister got lost, and no one could find her because the city closed for a quarantine. Maurice and Belle had to left to Villeneuve.

A gypsy community found a poor little girl wandering the streets and gave her a shelter and home.

Many years later, Belle learned from Maurice about her lost sister, and set off to Paris to try to find at least some traces, some memories. She did not know all these years Esmeralda kept praying that someday she would be reunited with her father and little sister Belle.

Belle dreams of magic castles, enchanted roses and mirrors. She sees a lovely prince whose name she cannot remember. She dreams of love; she wakes up on a cold winter morning in the Asylum for Loons. All she is told is that there is no dream in her life, no love: at her wedding she had an ugly mental breakdown, and her despondent fiancé Gaston had to place her under guardianship, her old father died soon after. Alas, madness was running in their family. Oh Belle, such beauty, such mind are locked in a living grave for the rest of her days!...
