LSU women’s basketball player Last-Tear Poa has filed a lawsuit against U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Louisiana’s Middle District Court after her P-1A Athlete visa application was denied. This legal action, as reported by On3, highlights the challenges international athletes face with NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) opportunities while on F-1 student visas.
Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Poa joined LSU in 2022 after a standout junior college career. Despite having over 200,000 social media followers and potential NIL opportunities, her F-1 visa limits her ability to earn income from these activities. The denial of her P-1A application cited a lack of “internationally recognized” events, adding to the complex restrictions on international student-athletes—who make up about 12% of Division I athletes—wishing to participate in NIL while in the U.S.

Opals legend Lauren Jackson makes call on Olympic comeback - at least 'for now'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Melanie Dinjaski, The Canberra Times
Dreams of an incredible fifth Olympic campaign for basketball legend Lauren Jackson have been dashed - at least "for now" - after the 42-year-old ruled out playing in Paris.
The five-time WNBL champion was selected in the Opals squad for next month's Olympic qualifying tournament in Brazil, and though Jackson is excited to help Australia reach the Paris Games starting in July, she has put a line through going any further in green and gold.
"It's hard to sit here and be like, no, I'm not doing it because of how everything has played out in the last few years," Jackson told The Canberra Times.
"But right now it's a firm no way. I want to get back in [the Opals at the qualifiers] and then probably announce my retirement.
"I'm doing this because I want these girls to be at the Olympics and I know I can help them right now, but my children are my world, and especially as they're getting older I can't keep leaving them."
Jackson has two sons, and along with juggling her WNBL commitment with the Southside Flyers, she also works at Basketball Australia and with the She Hoops basketball program for women.
Jackson revealed that prior to her most recent Opals selection she had actually told her family and agent she was planning to retire from international basketball again. Then a phone call from Opals selectors convinced her to stay on for the Olympic qualifiers.
Though Jackson endured a "brutal" injury stretch since her 2022 WNBL comeback with a broken foot, arthritis, and a torn right Achilles that meant she couldn't walk or sleep properly after games, she's now returned to full health and is performing on the court too.
She put up 20 points in her 200th WNBL game on Sunday in Southside's win over the Melbourne Boomers, backing up her season-high 28 against the Sydney Flames last week.
However Jackson said her family responsibilities have made continuing international basketball beyond the Olympic qualification campaign more difficult.
"My youngest son left to go home with my parents this week because he's not coming on the road with us and I cried my eyes out," she said.
"I'm so thankful I've had these opportunities and that I'm playing well again.
"Physically I feel pretty good compared to how I've been the last two years, so I know I'm definitely good enough to be there. But I've done everything I've needed to do in the sport.
"My whole career has been about the Opals, but it's getting a bit hard on the kids and it's a massive burden on my parents too.
The two-time WNBA champion hasn't yet decided what her basketball career will look like at the end of this WNBL season and when she does retire from the Opals.
But she is set to continue her move to basketball administration and is hopeful to keep playing NBL1 in Albury, and possibly WNBL if she can maintain a healthy life balance.
"If I'm still good enough to play, then obviously I want to do it," she said. "If I can have fun and enjoy basketball with my family with me, then absolutely, but if not, it's another story."

A record WNBL crowd of 7,681 at John Cain Arena fell silent as Lauren Jackson was assisted from the floor just 62 seconds into the game.
Just minutes earlier, the legendary Jackson was the final player announced to a raucous ovation. Like much of the last twelve months, the gravity of watching the all-time great go to work had drawn the eyes of many to the WNBL, perhaps for the first time.
After her bronze medal heroics at the Women's World Cup in Sydney with the national team last year, Jackson has played a major role in the Flyers campaign, averaging 14 points and five rebounds in a perhaps more than expected 21 minutes per game.
As if the fairy tale story needed any more juice, Jackson's trademark determination and will once again came to the fore, with the recent news that she has been carrying a fractured left foot through a large portion of the season.
"The great news is that it's not my broken foot, it's the other one," Jackson joked of the suspected serious Achilles injury.
With scans to come on Sunday morning, there is a genuine fear that this may be last chapter written of the remarkable comeback of Jackson, with just four games left on the Flyers schedule before the postseason.
"For me, I said I was on borrowed time," Jackson said. "It's hard, the way that I feel right now, I don't know. I'm pretty tough, but when I felt it, I felt something pop. I was just standing there, I said to the referee that I can't actually walk. Now I can't put any weight on it, whatever it is, I'll go get the scans in the morning and go from there. Hopefully it's just a stinger but I don't know."
"As soon as I felt it pop, I was like oh my god, that's my day over. I went to try and walk and I couldn't. The poor ref, she said she can't stop the game, I said that's fine, but I can't actually move so I don't know what to do."
Jackson's absence understandably took the air out the building for the first quarter, before the Flyers and Flames put on a show that came down to the final possession with Tiana Mangakahia knocking down a free-throw with 2.7 seconds left to help lift the Flames to the 68-67 road win.
The aura of Jackson may have brought a large portion of the crowd, but in the end, it was the high-quality play on the court that captivated those in the stands. The 26-point performance of Mangakahia in particular is of note, with the star guard recently included in the Opals extended squad in preparation for the 2023 Women's Asia Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics.
"I obviously had a lot of time to take in the atmosphere and the crowd was just incredible. That was so awesome to see that at a WNBL game, just to suit up was one of the greatest privileges," Jackson said.
"What a magnificent thing for women's basketball in this country. It's a domestic league, it's the premier national league but to have that kind of support in Melbourne was just incredible.
"I've said it a million times, but I think off the back of the World Cup and the visibility that basketball has had, it's really lifted the profile of our sport. Hopefully it's just the start of many games like this. It was great to be able to prove that it can be done and I'm pretty sure every single person in that stadium enjoyed that game."
Flyers head coach Cheryl Chambers set aside her disappointment for Jackson and the Flyers, to praise the Southside organisation for what was a spectacular advertisement for the league.
"There is some real talent across the whole league, so hopefully there's some people there that don't go every week that think they are going to get on board and support women's basketball," Chambers said.
"The other thing I'm proud about our organisation is, we probably weren't ready for this game, we could have asked if we were perfectly ready for this game, was it the perfect one to have against Sydney, all that kind of stuff. Gerry (Ryan) and Ian (Coutts) took a chance on women's basketball because we weren't one hundred percent ready and I think sometimes we wait until we're one hundred percent and it's too late. It's an awesome thing for women's sport."
Postgame, Jackson took part in a presentation on court, before remarkably presenting to the media for a press conference that she could and should have been expected to skip. Shifting between crutches and a wheelchair for comfort, understandably in pain, Jackson continued to lead the discussion for the growth of the women's game in Australia.
"You've got to take risks to take that next step and evolve and grow. As a league, we're doing that," Jackson explained. "As a team in the league, I think Southside is definitely pushing those barriers and trying to set the standard.
"That's what we did tonight. Gerry and Ian and our whole team should be so proud of what our front office was able to do, to bring that crowd out here tonight. I'm very, very proud to be a Flyer."
It would be difficult and near on impossible to imagine another athlete of Jackson's status in any sport presenting in this manner given the difficult circumstances, though, in some ways it shouldn't have been a surprise. This is who LJ is. A class act.
"Nobody could have scripted this last year, it's been completely insane. Then how ironic, how ironic (is this), it is what it is," she said with a smile and a shake of the head.
Claiming another medal for the national team could have been the perfect swansong for Jackson, but her work was not yet done, with her presence in the WNBL a delight for basketball fans young and old. It would be foolish and premature to write Jackson off given what has been witnessed over the last 12 months, but in a bittersweet way, if Saturday night is ultimately the last time Jackson suits up in a professional environment, doing so in front of a record-breaking crowd would be fitting for a legendary legacy.
All Jackson has done is create history since she first burst onto the scene more than two decades ago as a teenage star. Saturday night at John Cain Arena was no different.

Why Tennis Court Cleaning in Melbourne is Essential for Optimal Performance?
Tennis court cleaning in Melbourne is critical for maintaining optimal efficiency and extending the life of the floor surface. Tennis, squash, badminton, basketball, and other indoor games require cleaning and maintenance at regular intervals to keep the floor functioning and provide the greatest performance.
Tumblr media
Tennis court cleaning services in Melbourne use innovative cleaning procedures to keep the floor surface clean, and free of filth and mould, while also maintaining its UV resistance and hygiene.
A clean tennis court allows players to move cockily which improves grip, speed, and overall performance. Regular cleaning minimises the collection of material that can disturb ball bounce and slow down the game tempo, gives a professional appearance, improves performance, and satisfies players, allowing them to play smoother and more pleasurable games.
Why Should Court Owners Hire Professional Cleaning Services?
Hiring professional tennis and other indoor game court cleaning services is critical for maintaining long-lasting, high-performance facilities. Professional cleaners have access to specialised equipment, high and low-pressure treatment, and eco-friendly cleaning solutions tailored to different types of court surfaces.
They can effectively remove grime, moss, mould, and other substances by using an especially crafted tennis court scrubber and eco-friendly treatment with a low-pressure Xjet Nozzle sprayer to evenly cover the entire space that DIY cleaning methods fail to address.
Moreover, experienced cleaners are skilled in preserving the integrity of the court’s surface while ensuring thorough cleaning without causing damage.
Meanwhile, court owners should hire a professional cleaning service provider to save time and effort and get a satisfactory result.
Regular cleaning by professionals also minimizes the need for costly repairs or resurfacing and prolongs the lifespan of the court floor surface. In addition, these experts can offer tailored maintenance schedules, to deliver their expertise without disturbing any game or match schedule, and ensure that the court remains in peak condition year-round. Therefore, contact a renowned tennis court cleaning service provider for an enhanced playing experience for players.

Game 36 For the Scrapbook Wed, Sept 11 8:00pm EDT Washington @ Chicago
Starting: WASH: Atkins, Dolson, Edwards, Sykes, Vanloo CHI: Allen, Carter, Cardoso, Harrison, Onyenwere (DeShields ankle, Reese wrist, Williams knee)
1st Quarter The Sky have 13 wins to the Dream's 12 and the Mystics' 11 at this point. On the first play our defense is looking great, no shots for 21 seconds then Ariel knocks the ball out of bounds. The Sky don't get the shot off in time and we get an opening stop. To ice the cake, Slim hits a 3 on the other end. Aaliyah gets a nice jumper. And JVL goes for 3 now. It's feeling just a little unfocused and casual. I'd like to see the intensity ramp up, and more passing on offense to expose gaps. Dolson and Edwards are doing well versus Cardoso on the glass. Carter has found a sweet spot on the right side and is the offense right now for the Sky. Nice drop off from Slim to Stef. Slim with the hesi to the rack. Now she hits a 3, she wants this one on her back. It's 19-8. Shatori's 100% Guaranteed Steal-and-Score Services come into play early. The bench is in for DC and Engstler hits a 3. Shatori steals again but this time gets a little overzealous in her attempt to be unselfish. Onyenwere gets a much-needed 3 for her team. Beautiful fader from Sika and the Mystics are off to a flyer. 29-13.
2nd Quarter Haha former Mystic Elizabeth Williams is chattering to the ref from the bench. Tell 'em EWill. Karlie cashes in from the nail. Ariel checks in and puts the ball in the hoop. Shatori is playing great D on Chennedy. Now Engstler interrupts a pass and Jade throws a strike to Sika for a layup. The arena is quiet as the Sky have just 3 points in 5 minutes, and trail by 19. Chen breaks thru and I'd like to point out that Shatori wasn't marking her. I spy Moriah Jefferson on the bench. The Sky could really use her range right now. The Mystics have let off the gas a little and the whistles have been blowing. Stef gets a 3. Carter and Cardoso with most of the points for Chicago. 43-29.
3rd Quarter Ariel blocks a pass by Chennedy but then we lose Izzy Harrison in behind. Edwards with a gorgeous reverse. JVL with a 3 over Cardoso. JVL goes again. I think she heard the announcers talking about rookies and leaving her name out of it. Stef gets whistled and it's been light light calls against her all game. The Stics go back to the Aaliyah reverse move. Cardoso falls over and a Mystic gets called for a foul. I'm not sure who they think that was on. Aaliyah is feeling herself this quarter, she even shot a 3 although she's still waiting on a make from there. She gets another jumper! That's 8 points this quarter so far. Whoa Shimmy just made an unnecessary "know your place, rookie" comment about JVL. I feel particularly bothered because Julie has been playing professional basketball for 10 years. And she has started almost every game this season. Slim drops it off to Aaliyah. Now she finds Engstler. Karlie gets in on the quick buckets. Already we have 22 pts with 2:42 left to play this quarter. Sika makes it look easy under the hoop. Aaliyah Edwards with 10 points this quarter! 71-48.
4th Quarter Karlie steals but Harrison gets a block. It's back-to-back tough makes at the end of the clock for DC—from Engstler and Melbourne. Harrison just fouled out, most of the calls all night have been light. That's a tough pill in a situation when you're down 23 to a team that's fighting you for the final playoff spot. Steal, countersteal, block, charge. Let's not get messy here at the end. We mess around with a movement-less offense and unsurprisingly run out of clock. This time Ariel waits a few moments then fires the 3 for gold. Sug is getting some time on the court now and hits a jumper. Slim REJECTS Chen big time. Nice no-look pass from Jade to Sika for 2. Now Jade hits a 3. It feels like she is gaining confidence from there under the influence of all the perimeter shooters on the team. Aaliyah and Karlie both get late-game steals and Jade runs the floor for a classic layup to seal a 30-point blowout. 89-58 final.

QSA expands inclusive basketball across Melbourne
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/qsa-expands-inclusive-basketball-across-melbourne/
QSA expands inclusive basketball across Melbourne
Australia’s largest LGBTIQA+ sporting club  QSA continues stepping up inclusion in community sport for all as Q League spreads across Melbourne.
Two years ago, Queer Sporting Alliance (QSA) launched an Australian first – Q League.
A community basketball and netball league built by queer folk for queer folk.
To this day, they continue to change the game for the better as they expand their basketball tournaments across Melbourne into the Docklands.
“Q League is a space for the LGBTIQA+ community and their mates to come together and have a great time.”
“We are so proud of what we have built.” Executive Director Bindy Cohen.
A year into the role, Bindy is excited at how far QSA are coming.
This will be the 4th location for Q League in Australia.
“We are excited expanding to Docklands and hopefully more locations in the future,” Bindy said.
“We’re taking the community into sport and making the word community meaningful.”
With Q League embracing the true spirit of sport by celebrating the ‘all’, prioritising fun over winning.
People of all gender identities and abilities who often feel left out of traditional team sporting environments are welcome to play, including allies.
“Making sure our trans participants feel safe and comfortable has always been at our forefront.”
“When we started, we learned quickly that not everyone gets it.”
“The only way we could make people understand was to show them how it’s done.”
Everyone is welcome on QSA’s court
Q Leagues non-gendered tournaments are a world first, with all games following the same ‘rainbow rules”.
It’s something that traditional community sports clubs and competitions could learn from.
“We have so many allies that play because Q League’s community vibe makes them feel comfortable and safe.”
“We have enjoyed how intersectional the league has become, particularly for the neuro-divergent community who have been drawn to the welcoming environment of the league.”
‘Rainbow cards’ are awarded to players who score more than 10 points in a row, restricting them from the key until the end of the half.
A ‘no tryouts’ policy means no matter your experience, you get to join a team and play.
All players’ achievements are celebrated in ‘Rainbow Round’ with DJs cheering and more.
“Some of our players tell us they never thought they’d play team sports again because they hadn’t found a safe place,“ Bindy said,
“Which is mind-blowing. It makes no sense that someone must feel that way.”
Training for Docklands Q League has been taking place on Tuesday nights with games starting next month.
“August has been about ‘Come and Try’ sessions,” Bindy said. ‘if you’re unsure, you can come down and have a go.”
The scratch matches and small training sessions have been a great opportunity for people to step onto the court and see if it is for them.

Lauren Jackson is back.
The most decorated Australian basketballer in history, at age 42, is adding another chapter to her incomparable story, defying the odds to return to the court with the Southside Flyers in the WNBL.
In a massive boost for the sport that will reverberate all over the world, Jackson has not only recovered from the mental and physical trauma of dual-major surgeries but says she is fitter and stronger than when she returned to the international arena to help guide the Opals to a bronze medal at last year’s FIBA World Cup in Sydney.
“Yep, I’m back,” Jackson, echoing another ‘GOAT’ of the sport, Michael Jordan, told Code Sports.
“I don’t think anyone thought I would come back — but I still thought I could play again.
“The rehab went really, really well, I was back on court a couple of months ago and it just got to a point where, physically, I don’t think I’ve felt better than this, at least in the last five or six years.
“I didn’t want to be left wondering how I would feel in 10 years time if I looked back and I didn’t play this season, knowing that I was fit and able.
“I know it’s my last shot. One more year.”
Following last year’s World Cup glory, Jackson joined Southside and quietly played through the pain of a Lisfranc fracture in her left foot.
In February, she ruptured her right Achilles tendon, a minute into the Flyers’ clash with Sydney Flames in front of a record WNBL crowd.
The 7681 at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena were silenced as the three-time WNBA MVP fought back tears as she hobbled to the Southside, souring what was to be one of the biggest celebrations of the WNBL ever.
Many thought it was over but the four-time Olympic medallist, even then, refused to close the door — she still felt fit and didn’t want to end as she did in 2016 when knee issues forced her into premature retirement.
“It’s really hard to close the door after everything that I’ve been through,” she said.
“It was so traumatic, just going through the break and then the Achilles, I was in so much pain, but I thought ‘look I’m going to get fit, I’m going to stay fit’, my mind was in a place where it didn’t matter if I played or not.
“Everyone was asking me ‘are you going to do it?’
“Even my best friends and my family will tell you I really didn’t know for sure until only recently.”
TURNING POINT IN AN ‘UNBELIEVABLE RECOVERY’
Jackson’s initial goal when she went under the knife was to recover enough — and in time — for a farewell tour with her hometown club Albury-Wodonga, which plays on a court named for her in NBL1 East, next year.
But, as rehab progressed, so did the once remote prospect of a WNBL return. A turning point on the court, coupled with a recovery that left her surgeon floored, helped solidify Jackson’s decision.
“The injuries were pretty nasty and I didn’t think I would get to a point where I’d be ready to play before the WNBL season,” Jackson said.
“Had surgery in February, started my rehab pretty intensely in April and was running by early May.
“It was so painful, and I was pulling up sore but, in June, I turned a corner.
“I’ve tested it massively, the last two months, running with a weighted vest every day and just putting as much load through the Achilles to make sure my body’s ready to do it again.
“When I went back and saw my surgeon a couple of weeks ago, he said ‘I honestly never thought I would see you the way you’ve recovered, it has just blown me away. As a 42-year-old, this is unbelievable’.
“It’s been a bit of a journey, for sure.”
A basketball journey, for Jackson and the nation, still to reach its final destination.
FAMILY FIRST
The key to it all, was Southside’s support in helping Jackson relocate to Melbourne to have her two beloved boys Harry, 6, and Lenny, 4, by her side.
“It was hard last year because they weren’t with me and we were coming back and forth from Albury. I can tell you right now there were times I was so sad, I missed them desperately and it would have been too hard to do it again,” Jackson said.
“The club has been so supportive and we’re in the process of moving to Melbourne at the moment, I’ve been down with the team and running some camps.
“I love that my children get to be around a female basketball team, they’re going to get so much out of it and being in a team environment is so important for them, especially at their age.”
Harry’s a chip off the old block, possessing a similar attitude to mum and a heavy interest in the sport that made her an icon.
“Harry’s really into it, I’ve got him in a team down in Melbourne over summer, which is fun,” she said.
“He’s probably still a little bit too young but he loves it, watches NBA all the time, loves the WNBA as well, loves the women’s game, loves everything about the sport.”
A Jackson in the NBL, Boomers or NBA is a distant dream, right now, but a young Lauren Jackson dared to dream, so why can’t we?

Having it is fun, especially if you love to swim or host pool parties at home. However, there might come a time when you will get tired of it, making you get rid of it. With this, ask for the help of professionals and hire pool removal Melbourne services. Once the pool is gone, here are some repurposing ideas to help you find inspiration on what to do with the space:
Outdoor Lounge Area
If you want a space where you can place outdoor furniture, like comfortable sofas and cushions, then an outdoor lounge area is for you! In this place, you can also install a fire pit or an outdoor heater to make you feel warm if you want to stay there during the chilly night. Having the lounge area can be your safe space for thinking good things in life, just you and the skies looking and understanding each other.
Garden Oasis
For those who want to make their former pool area into something more environmentally friendly, you can turn it into a garden oasis. As the term ‘garden’ states, the space should have a variety of plants and flowers to complete the look. Some of what you will commonly see are shrubs, trees, hydrangeas, and azaleas.
Grassy Lawn
Keeping it simple and plain is also okay, and you can use a grassy lawn idea to make it happen. Even if it is simple and nothing is in there except the grass, there are things you can still do with it, like turning it into a picnic space. If you still want to host parties, it is the perfect place to do that. Parties with outdoor activities and games will be safer because no swimming pool can pose safety risks, especially to children.
Outdoor Kitchen and Dining Area
Like in the movies, families and friends go to the backyard to have some time together. Turning the former swimming pool into an outdoor kitchen and dining area is perfect for those who want to make use of their outdoor furniture and appliances. Complete the look of the outdoor kitchen with a grill, countertops, and dining area. Anything entertainment and cooking, you can host it here!
Sun Deck
Putting some touch of the beach area in your home is also possible with a sun deck! This space has lounge chairs and umbrellas, just like where you go to relax on the beach if you do not want to swim. Some people even have a hot tub to replace the water element from the swimming pool.
Sports Court
Do you have kids or loved ones who love to play sports? Then, they do not need to go elsewhere because your backyard has enough space to be turned into a sports court. Whether they play basketball or volleyball, they can move without restriction and hesitation. If no one is into sports, it is also okay because you can have a place for any outdoor fun and exercise.
Zen Garden
Another type of garden you can replace your pool area with is a Zen garden. If a garden oasis has flowers and plants, a Zen garden commonly consists of gravel paths and minimalist landscaping. Some people also put a hammock or a meditation area to make the place look complete. If you enter this place, you will feel relaxed and safe, mirroring how Japanese Zen gardens make people feel.
Outdoor Movie Theatre
People have different ways to have fun outdoors, and one is having an outdoor movie theatre. You can set up a movie screen and put some comfy seating to complete the look. For the experience, do not forget a bucket of popcorn and sodas. Watch movies under the stars and make it a safe and happy place for everyone.
Water Feature
Since swimming pools can be massive, removing them is the right choice. However, if you prefer water elements in your backyard, you can have it replaced with a waterfall, fountain, or pond.
Repurposing your pool space will make the pool removal worth it. All it takes is a little creativity and effort, and you can give your backyard a new life. Whatever it is that you choose for your former pool area, ensure that you love it to avoid regret. Good luck turning your pool into paradise!
