Turisti ai piedi della Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti, Roma, fredda giornata invernale 2019.
A week ago I posted a photo of a broad staircase leading to the apse of Santa Maria Maggiore, a papal basilica, and that elicited an interesting comment.
"thecrankyprofessor:
One of the worst things about Rome is that there are so few places to sit in public. These stairs were for years (centuries) the best place to sit in the winter sun in Rome. Then Bernard Cardinal Law (who has many other sins on his shoulders but this one affects me personally), archpriest of the Basilica Papale, raised money from American donors to put up a fence around the bottom and for the broad stairs in front, too."
That comment rings true, for I realize that on visits to Rome there were few places to sit for a few moments in order to reconnoiter, to load film in the era before digital cameras, to take a long look at one monument or another, or just to rest. In other capitals and cities where I have walked extensively benches can be taken for granted. As I get older, those become ever more attractive! One solution in Rome is to include visits to the interior of churches where one can sit in a pew and contemplate. That works because many Roman churches allow free interior access and are open most daylight hours, not always true in other cities. Another ploy is to stop for an espresso or a gelato, but more than a few places serving those treats do not have seating.
The photo above is the exception that proves the rule, for there is a bench at the fountain in the Piazza di Spagna, perhaps because the tourist crush has discouraged sitting on the "Spanish Steps." On the day the photo was taken the Polizia were actively forcing sitters to get up off the steps, and that was on a day out of tourist season!
