Today I'm sharing an anxious plea for reassurance + a snippet of chapter 9 of Basil Pitch's Diary, posting June 7. Below the cut for spoilers and anxiety.

<ANXIETY> I'm working on chapter 10 now and friends, it's slow going. I still love this fic with all my heart, but chapters 1-9 I had mapped out more or less scene by scene months before I started posting, and before writing most of them. Writing them was like novelizing a movie I'd watched in my head a countless times.

For the rest of the fic, though--Ch 10-13--I had only broad strokes figured out. I knew the very ending, and a handful of key emotional beats along the way, but the connective tissue was basically "Collect Underpants ... ? ... Profit."

I've now plotted the rest out in reasonable detail, with help from the extremely kind and insightful @facewithoutheart and @thewholelemon. But I am a plotter to the core and it feels much scarier to be writing a story I just made / am still making up than one that's been living in my head for years.

Also, you guys: Chapter 9 is really fucking good. I'm really proud of it and excited to share it. And also scared that the rest of the fic won't live up to the promise of all I've set up. This fic is my baby and I just really want to nail it.

Intellectually I know I'm just swinging on the creative-confidence pendulum, and that future me will be able to write as well as past me. These doubts are just intrusive thoughts, skittering around my head like the mice that live in my walls. Harmless, but such a nuisance. </ANXIETY>

Anyway! Here are some sentences of Chapter 9, which, did I mention, is really good. Baz is finally going dancing with DeNiall.

“So, cousin. What’s your strategy?” I just raised an eyebrow and gestured at myself. My shirt was a perfectly cut navy so sheer that it read as cobalt over my pale skin. Climbing my chest were embroidered red and pink roses, between which you could clearly see my nipples. I’d changed out of Oxford cloth at Fiona’s. (I didn’t tell her I’d stopped in Blackfriars to drop off my grandmother’s furs and my grandfather’s Dickens.) Through my sleeve you could also see my mother’s wand holster, which my father now insists I wear whenever I leave the house. He’s also looking for a second dog. Something more territorial than Rusty, whose lick is worse than his bite. After the numpties he spent a week teaching me defensive spells. His skill surprised me, though it shouldn’t have. Once, when I was small, someone tried to mug him as we were leaving a theatre. My father didn’t panic or capitulate, just calmly kneecapped the man with a vicious Why me, why now.

Instead of answering Brown, tell them how they make you feel. Tell them their eyes are endearing as melted chocolate sticking to the corner of your mouth. As earthy as damp bark after an autumn rainstorm, falling to pieces between your fingers, tucked lovingly into your coat pocket, a momento of where you were, what you were doing, of why you fell in love. Tell them how they taste. How meeting their deep, searching gaze settles sweet and timeless on your tongue, stirring a gentle shyness in your stomach when it darkens, desire glowing in flickering shades of umber and hickory. Instead of answering Brown, tell them I love you.

Instead of answering Blue, tell them about how often you miss them. Tell them their eyes sound like waves kissing your favorite shores, a childhood haunt that you yearn to see once more. Cobalt and prussian, lowlights of steel, moss, and pine. Tell them their eyes dance with the same passion that erodes cliffs, carves valleys between mountains, fills your cup to the brim until you’re sated and content. Tell them that watching them read is like watching the sky ebb and flow, like following a blue moon as it traces early morning into a stunning dawn. Instead of answering Blue, tell them I love you.

Instead of answering Green, tell them that thinking of them makes you smile. Tell them their eyes coax a sensation of peace, of mirthful laughter, from your chest, your pulse an emerald bright, a tangy basil, crisp as a pear — soft ferns caressing your cheek, doing little to steady the unsurprising truth: you can’t look away. Not now. Not ever. Tell them their eyes sing with the rustle of wild blackberry bushes, smell of spring grasses, dainty leaves unfurling in much the same way that their own eyes reveal an entire universe.  Instead of answering Green, tell them I love you.

Tagged by our collective darling @belleandsaintsebastian to share a bit of a WIP. This is from Say What You Want... and I'm gonna pop it under a cut so those who want to avoid spoilers can!

Lane has fled and Luke is God knows where and Jess figures Babette and Patty are about to bustle in for brunch and goss, and what else the fuck is he supposed to do with Liz except escort her up to the apartment?

He’s spinning out. Liz in Stars Hollow. His mother, in his town. It feels apocryphal, in spite of the photographic evidence he once found at the bottom of a pile of William’s Hardware detritus: teenage Liz and Luke at the Gazebo, Liz at Stars Hollow High in Jess’s math classroom, Liz with a parcel of girls her age, all cobalt eyeshadow and Aquanet fumes, Liz in a fuschia taffeta monstrosity, sandwiched between her parents. Seeing the set of William’s shoulders and the slant of his brow made Jess feel like looking into a funhouse mirror or a crystal ball. Behold thy future.

“Have a seat,” the autopilot feature of his brain says. “Do you want, uh, coffee? Or tea?”

“No caffeine for me,” Liz chirps. She rummages into the giant bag slung over her shoulder and pulls out a slightly crushed, bright pink box. “But I’d love some tea!” She passes the box to him.

“Tea. Sure.”

He busies himself with setting their ancient kettle to boil, reading the box of tea in desperate dissociation – Also known as holy basil, the label informs him, tulsi is a sacred plant for many in India and may have anti-inflammatory properties – and tries not to notice Liz drinking everything in around the apartment. His skin prickles when she lightly runs her fingers over his bookshelf; it takes a titanic effort not to blurt out “Don’t!” when she plucks Rory’s copy of Krik? Krak! off the shelf, but he still holds his breath until she puts it down.

He fills a mug for them both (not that he’ll drink, his stomach’s shrunk to a walnut, equally shriveled) and clears his throat. “It’s ready,” he says.

“Great!” She comes over to the table and drops into the chair Jess usually sits in – it hits him like electroshock. He wordlessly sits down in Luke’s chair.

Liz blows the steam from the top of the mug, then takes a scalding sip. “Perfect. Have you tried tulsi before?”

“Never,” he answers truthfully.

“Oh, it’s lifechanging. If you like it I’ll send you some.”

“Okay.”

They sit, Liz drinks, and Jess spirals.

So, I play Civilization VI, a 4X game. I don't wanna go too deep into the game, but people can Google stuff, right? We have TECHNOLOGY

And, with the new Kingdom Lore pulling up, I was thinking about making hypothetical Civ Vi abilities for the Kingdoms and their leaders. There's also a Sui Generis mod that makes civilizations parts of ethnic groups with abilities for those too.

Evangeline: Harvest Kingdom

Farms gain +1 production for every 2 adjacent Farms. This is boosted to +1 for each adjacent Farm by Feudalism, and gain an additional +1 food for each adjacent Farm. You can build Farms on Hills once you unlock Feudalism.

Farms are a common improvement in Civ Vi, so why not boost Farms to an insane level? This ability is very similar to the Incan ability, but modified to work like an early game Feudalism with Production.

Queen Indiga: House of Humanity

A Holy Site adjacency bonus grants Culture in addition to Faith. All Encampments gain +1 Gold and Production from all adjacent Farms, and grant major adjacency to Holy Sites. Finishing Encampments and Encampment districts grants a free melee unit with no maintenance cost.

This ability is very similar to parts of Byzantium's two leaders: Theodora and Basil II. The Holy Site adjacency to Farms merges well with the Evangeline's ability to make Farms, and the Encampment part is based off of Byzantium's unique District, the Hippodrome, but modified for Encampments.

Unique Unit: Kelvingyard Slaver

Unique Unit that replaces the Man-at-Arms and is unlocked at Feudalism. Stronger unit than the unit it replaces, and cheaper . -10 Strength when fighting outside of your borders, +5 when fighting against a unit from another Religion. Has a chance to capture enemy military units as Builders.

The Kelvingyard Slaver is replacing the Man-at-Arms as Evangeline's Medieval melee unit, and I fused several other Melee units for it: The Eagle Warrior of the Aztecs (The capture units for Builders part), the Spanish Conquistadors for the boost to Strength when fighting a unit from another Religion. I also put a major nerf when fighting outside of Evangeline's borders, putting a higher emphasis on staying within your borders, as a reference to how they don't really act openly outside of Evangeline. It also helps a lot if you get attacked/invaded, as they'd be super OP the entire time and even help your economy by getting you a couple Builders from it.

Unique Building: Slave Auction

Unique Building that replaces the Market, and is cheaper to build. +1 Trade Route, and +2 Production and +2 Gold if this city has an Encampment, and +2 Faith and +2 Culture if this city has a Holy Site.

The Slave Auction really isn't much, just a slave auction.

Evangeline Overall Strategy

As it may be clear to see, Evangeline's ability, as well as Indiga's, makes for a powerful farming empire, turning every available tile into Farms, while having a powerful homeland defense. Farms give Production, and Encampments and the Slave Auction do as well, and combined they're designed to basically remove Industrial Zones from the equation, as enough Farms with an Encampment and Market will do well.

The lack of any way to boost Science using Abilities isn't a bug, it's a feature: Evangeline is notably low tech, so having no Science Boost works out.

I can also see Cobalt, Cerulea, or even Azura as potential alternate Leaders (Azura can work as two leader have had two nations, and one married into another: Eleanor of Aquitaine for England and France, and Kublai Khan of China and Mongolia). I'd say Cerulea's knuckles down on Holy Sites, possibly via giving Gold equal to a portion of a city's Faith output, Cobalt is something I can't really figure out until I know more about his potential reign, and Azura would likely have an ability that boosts Gold output from Markets and Harbors while having the ability to train Spies earlier and gaining Gold and Culture from successful Spy Operations.

Matuzu Kingdom: First Kindgom

All cities gain additional Culture, and Science equal to 20% of their Gold output. All Luxury Resources give Amenities to 2 additional cities, and give 1 Housing and +2 Gold to the city they're worked in when improved.

Matuzu's obviously pretty into Gold, so why not make an ability all about that money? Luxuries also make sense, as they're valuable and worth gold.

Marghan: Frivolous Spending

Cities gain an additional +2 gold for each unique type of Luxury Resource worked, and Trade Routes give +2 gold for every Luxury Resource improved at the destination.

Marghan... would NOT be my first choice for a Leader, as he really isn't much of a good ruler. However, as High King, he needs to be included. So, his ability taps into his cross-continental DoorDash orders and his love of being an ass and doing drugs, by making that a massive Gold making ability. I strongly believe this is a bad thing, but I needed a good ability.

Unique Unit: Uekoran Archer

Unique ranged unit that replaces the Crossbowman and is cheaper. Uekoran Archers give Gold equal to the Strength of a Unit when they defeat the Unit.

Uekoran Archers are a pretty significant thing, right? So, having them as a UU makes sense to me.

Unique Building: World Atheneum

Unique building for the Government Plaza, available with a Tier 2 Government. Grants the city the Government Plaza is in +15% Science and Culture, and can hold up to 2 Great Works, which are automatically themed when completed.

I'm using the World Atheneum for Matuzu's Unique Infrastructure (Districts, Buildings, and Improvements have ALL been used for this) because it's a significant part of Matuzan culture. The Government Plaza also has like 1 Unique Building in official Civilizations and Leaders (That being the Queen's Bibliotheque for Kristina).

Matuzan Overall Strategy

Overall, Matuzu is built for a ton of Gold, Science, and Culture while improving every possible Luxury Resource and making a ton of Trade Routes for that Gold.

I'd say Azura, Jelani, and maybe Uzoma make for solid Matuzan rulers. Azura would have her ability for both Evangeline and Matuzu, Jelani would have some sorta ability focused on the military (Maybe a Leader Unique Unit (Like Rough Rider Teddy Roosevelt or Empire Victoria)), and Uzoma would probably have a good diplomacy ability.

I ain't doing the rest because this is already so long. I'll do Damijana and Zareen next tho

Working with Technology Deities

{My post is Cross Posted from The Cobalt Athenaeum aka my original post}

This is all largely UPG and SPG based.

Technology deities are a type of egregore, you can call them a pop culture deity if that feels better. They are the embodiment of the tech domain itself. A primordial being, at least in the way I work with them. They have no faces, names or gender to me. They just are their domain and energy itself. Incredibly powerful in their own right. They can be found the same way a pop culture deity can be, you can see more in our Sister Server Westruun (the blue one) aka The Cobalt Athenaeum.

How Do I Work With a Tech Deity?

You can work with them like any other deity, the largest difference is incorporating them into your tech magic. Are you a streamer? A YouTuber? Or even a blogger? Perhaps work with the Algorithm god. They rule over (in my personal experience) the Algorithm, wisdom, confidence, perception, and change. They can help you boost your numbers, your presence, boost confidence and much more. Incorporating them into your life would surely aid you in your goals.

Make a space for them, build a relationship, make offerings and petition them. You will not regret it.

Purdue University material engineers have created a patent-pending process to develop ultrahigh-strength aluminum alloys that are suitable for additive manufacturing because of their plastic deformability. Haiyan Wang and Xinghang Zhang lead a team that has introduced transition metals cobalt, iron, nickel and titanium into aluminum via nanoscale, laminated, deformable intermetallics. Wang is the Basil S. Turner Professor of Engineering and Zhang is a professor in Purdue's School of Materials Engineering. Anyu Shang, a materials engineering graduate student, completes the team. "Our work shows that the proper introduction of heterogenous microstructures and nanoscale medium-entropy intermetallics offers an alternative solution to design ultrastrong, deformable aluminum alloys via additive manufacturing," Zhang said. "These alloys improve upon traditional ones that are either ultrastrong or highly deformable, but not both."

In terms of books, I've got several books on my currently reading list right now, though I'm really only actively reading one at the moment.

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell (buddy read; was on hold for several months, but we're planning to finally continue it tomorrow)

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (buddy read; currently on hold until we finish Wayward Son)

The Princess Bride by William Goldman (reading it on and off; I like it but it's going very slowly)

Boneshaker by Cherie Priest (this is the one I'm actively reading and I'm enjoying it)

In terms of fanfiction, I put everything I've already started reading and everything I'm planning to read into a spreadsheet and I'm currently working on reading everything on there. It's going slowly but I've enjoyed what I've read so far. There are a few ongoing fics that I really need to catch up on, so hopefully I'll get to that soon. The fic I caught up to most recently was Heaven Has A Road But No One Walks It.

So, uh, surprise, I've started to work on Angsty SongXue again, I've written two chapters (48+49) so far and am currently working on chapter 50. However, I want to write at least 10-15 more chapters before I start posting again because I'd like to have minimal deadline stress, thank you. 🙈 So, it'll be another while before you get an update. After a year, I finally get 40 bees :DD

Idk if my hive is good or bad,, I find it bad because If I don't use any boosts to do quest, I think I have to do it forever 💔 and half good, I kill lv 9 commando chick (100k hp), not over 10 mins.. I think it's like 7 mins (that's fast for me)

I need suggestion for my hive (Before I get attack I have to say I got photon bee before tabby, that's why tabby bee is not gifted BUT don't worry,, I'm about to get my 2nd star treat from panda bear.

Food Irradiation: An Effective Technique To Improve Food Safety

What is Food Irradiation?

It is a technique where foods are exposed to ionizing radiation to destroy microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, or insects that might be present in or on the food. The technique uses gamma rays (from cobalt-60 or cesium-137), X-rays, or electron beams from a machine source to blast foods with ionizing energy, altering their molecular structure. History

The concept of food irradiation was first researched as early as the beginning of the 20th century. However, it gained global recognition around the 1950s when serious research was performed to establish its viability and commercial applications. Initial research showed irradiation could effectively eliminate bacteria from meats and spices without changing their visual appearance and quality. The first international conference on food irradiation took place in 1956. Since then, many countries approved irradiation of various food items like spices, herbs, onions, potatoes, fruits, and meats. How Does Irradiation Work? Here's a brief overview of how irradiation works: - Radiation sources like gamma rays or electron beams are used to generate the required radiation energy. - Food Irradiation Food items are placed on a conveyor belt or rack and passed through the radiation area at a controlled dose rate and exposure time. - The radiation energy penetrates through packaging and food physically altering DNA/RNA structures of microbes present. - At approved low doses, it does not make food radioactive but disrupts cellular functions and DNA/RNA structure of pathogens and insects, preventing their reproduction. - The end result is elimination or reduction of pathogens and insects without altering the visual or sensory qualities of foods. Advantages of Food Irradiation Reduces Foodborne Illnesses: Irradiation is extremely effective in eliminating pathogens that cause serious foodborne illnesses. It can destroy bacteria like E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella and other parasites in meat, poultry, seafood and spices. This significantly improves food safety. Lengthens Shelf Life: By halting microbial growth and arresting ripening/sprouting processes, irradiation extends the refrigerated shelf life of various produce and foods by several weeks. This reduces spoilage losses during storage and transportation. Controls Insect Infestation: Low dose irradiation is approved globally to control insect pests in grains, cereals, dried fruits and herbs. This eliminates quarantine issues and reduces post-harvest losses from insects and insect-borne diseases. Maintains Sensory Qualities: When performed at approved low doses, irradiation does not alter the appearance, texture, aroma or flavor of foods. Irradiated fruits and vegetables look and taste fresh for much longer. Sanitizes Spices: Many spices are irradiated to kill Salmonella, E. coli and other pathogens that may be present naturally or from cross-contamination during processing. This eliminates food safety risks from consuming contaminated spices. Applications of Food Irradiation Fruits & Vegetables: Irradiation preserves the quality and extends shelf life of several delicate produce including mangoes, papayas, potatoes, onions and garlic by 3-4 weeks. It arrests ripening/sprouting to prevent losses during storage and transport. Poultry: The poultry industry uses irradiation to destroy Campylobacter and Salmonella bacteria routinely present in raw chicken and turkey. This significantly reduces the risk of foodborne illnesses from consuming undercooked poultry meat. Spices: Many commonly used herbs and spices like black pepper, cumin, coriander, basil, celery are irradiated to kill pathogens and insects. It ensures the microbial safety of spices. Grains: Low dose irradiation is used globally to control insect pests in grains like wheat, rice and pulses. This eliminates quarantine issues and reduces post-harvest losses during transportation and storage.
