Here it is bois- Jagged Little Pill full plot synopsis

So, a lot of people in the JLP tag have been asking for a detailed synopsis of the show. I’m here to deliver! This goes out to @sunveiins and @lovebug1313 who I think were the first couple of people to start asking and wanted to be tagged to know when this was posted. Hope this helps for anyone who can’t get out to see the show!! (Also sorry this was delivered a bit later than promised I’m the worst sksdfn)

Warnings: Drug addiction, sexual assault, heavy topics like that and obviously spoilers if you want to go see the show for yourself

ACT 1:

-Mary Jane Healy is a mother obsessed with being seen as perfect, the best at everything, and with her family’s squeaky clean image. Literally all her energy is invested into making sure nobody knows that a single thing is wrong in her life.

-The show opens at Christmastime, and she is writing her annual family Christmas letter (the purpose of which is basically to brag about how great the Healys are doing and how she’s winning at life). 

-She writes about how her husband Steve got yet another promotion at work. Her daughter Frankie is in high school, as artistic and expressive as ever. (“In fact, right now, she’s upstairs with her best friend Joann working on a little craft project. *Lights on Frankie and Jo upstairs literally making out* “We always emphasize the importance of female friendships.”) And her golden boy, her perfect oldest son Nick, has just been accepted early to Harvard. (Right Through You)

-A celebratory breakfast for Nick reveals that the family is actually falling apart. Steve works so much that his marriage to MJ is now distant, hostile, and non-intimate. MJ is pressuring Nick to be perfect and keep up the family’s image. She’s constantly arguing with Frankie, who is adopted and feels the fact that she is black is being erased by her family in this white trash Connecticut town. (All I Really Want)

-Nick’s friends at school congratulate him and encourage him to come to a party that night to celebrate. Frankie and Jo complain about their complicated relationships with their mothers (Jo’s mom does not accept that she’s gay). (Hand in my Pocket) 

-MJ has a prescription for opiates as she had been in a car crash earlier that year. When they are unable to refill the prescription, she gets in touch with a dealer. (Smiling) WARNING THIS SONG WILL BREAK YOU EMOTIONALLY :)

-In class, a student named Phoenix (a good boy 12/10, the only man in the show apart from Steve who deserves rights) defends Frankie’s writing as the rest of the class ridicules it. The two start talking and developing feelings for one another, and they plan to meet up that night at the same party Nick had been invited to. (Ironic)

-Steve calls MJ to say he has to work late again. They get in an argument. Steve loves MJ and wants to work on things between them, but MJ is having none of it. (So Unsexy) Nick consoles an upset MJ who tells him that he’s “the only thing she’s done right.” She asks him to hang out with her, but he says tells her he was planning to go to the party. Nick sings about the pressure he feels from his mom to never screw anything up. (Perfect)

-Frankie and Nick roll up to the party. (Lancer’s Party [So Pure]) Frankie finds Phoenix and the two bond over their complicated home lives. Jo, who was dragged to a church function by her mother instead of being able to go to the party, joins the song. (That I Would Be Good)

-Bella, a friend of Nick’s, had gotten drunk at the party. The next morning the students are circulating pictures of her passed out with her shirt pulled up and talking shit about her. Frankie and Jo go to check on her and make sure she’s ok (despite the fact that they literally do not know her). Bella tells them that another friend of Nick’s named Andrew had raped her the night before while she had been drunk, but that no one will believe her. Frankie and Jo assure her that they believe her.

-Frankie goes home to confront Nick, who she knew had been with Bella and Andrew at the party. Nick brushes it off, citing Bella having been drunk and being known for her tendency to be dramatic. Their argument is overheard by MJ and Steve. Frankie tells Nick that as the only witness, he has to go to the police. MJ and Steve insist that he do nothing, as he had been drinking at the party as well and there could be consequences if that gets out. Also- insert subtext that MJ went through something similar to Bella in her college days. (Wake Up)

-MJ goes to church for the first time in years to pray for help with her addiction, her marriage, and her children. (Forgiven) (No one asked but this is my favorite song in the show, such a powerful moment. Idk if they do this still but at the ART they made it snow onstage, which really added to the sense of isolation the characters were feeling. One of the like 5 points in the show where I bawled my eyes out.)

ACT 2:

-Steve finally convinces MJ to go to marriage counselling with him, where she insists the problem is entirely his. (Not the Doctor) Big argument. Steve is frustrated that they haven’t had sex in almost a year while MJ says they shouldn’t need to since she knows from looking at his internet history that he watches weird porn every day. She feels unheard and unappreciated for all she does. He tells her she doesn’t have to do so much and starts singing a love song to her that gets hijacked by Phoenix and Frankie singing to each other. By the end of the song, the two end up in bed together. (Head Over Feet)

-Jo walks in on Phoenix and Frankie. While storming out of the house she runs into Steve and MJ and tells them what Frankie is doing upstairs. Phoenix gets the fuck out of there, so Frankie's alone to deal with her parents. She gets very upset that her parents aren’t ok with her choosing to have sex while they don’t care about what happened to Bella. She runs away from home, telling them some piece of paper doesn’t make her their daughter. That turns into yet another big fight between Steve and MJ.

-Frankie takes a train alone to NY. (Unprodigal Daughter) She tells Phoenix over the phone that she loves him, and is pissed that he isn’t ready to say it back. 

-Students at the school discus how outrageous they think Bella’s accusation is. Bella comes to the Healys’ house to talk to Nick, but only MJ is there. MJ tells Bella that the same thing happened to her in college (likely the first time she had said it out loud). After Bella leaves, Nick, feeling the guilt of being the only person with the power make people believe Bella, tells MJ the full extent of what happened the night of the party. He had been in the room when Andrew assaulted Bella, but had been drunk and in shock and did nothing to stop him. (Predator) Nick tells MJ that he wants to go to the police and help Bella bring Andrew to justice. She tells him what’s done is done, and the only thing telling the truth would accomplish is ruining his own life. Nick accuses her of only caring because harm to his reputation is harm to hers. 

-Jo comes to New York to pick up Frankie (who ran out of money and became desperate) and ends whatever undefined relationship/FWB situation they had going on. (You Oughta Know) (Holy shit. This one song alone deserves a tony. I cannot stress this enough- Lauren Patten is a GODDESS. I’ve never seen a standing ovation in the middle of a show before this.)

-MJ has overdosed on her painkillers and ends up in the hospital. (Uninvited) Steve arrives at the hospital and the fact that he didn’t know she was struggling rUINS HIM. (Mary Jane) They finally agree to actually put work into fixing their marriage. 

Steve, through tears: “I never meant to make you feel like work was more important than you or the kids. I didn’t realize how much I’d missed, I’m sorry. I’ve made so many mistakes. I’m such a mess.” MJ: “I’m detoxing from opiates. I win.”

MJ admits to Nick that she was wrong, and tells him to go to the police- Bella’s story is more important than their family’s reputation. Nick had already told the police what had happened.

-Everybody attends a rally Frankie throws for Bella, believing her now that Nick had come forward. There’s an important moment between Nick and Bella where he apologizes and she's mad that he gets to be the hero, that her saying it had happened wasn’t enough. (No) (Side note: in the ART version I don’t think Nick had a line in this song, letting Bella speak, and he just held up a sign that said “silence is violence” which was so much better.)

-The time has come for MJ’s next Christmas letter. She decides it will be the last one she writes and is honest for the first time about what had happened in the past year.

She writes about how she is in awe of Frankie, who spent the past year fighting for justice for Bella. MJ publicly admits her own past of sexual assault. She mentions that Andrew is being taken to trial and will not defend himself- he wants Bella’s to be the only story told. MJ and Frankie reconcile. (Thank U)

Instead of discussing Steve’s work again, she talks about how they are both in therapy individually and as a couple. He took up guitar lessons, but only knows how to play one Alanis Morissette record.

She opens up about her overdose and her experience in treatment.

Frankie dares her to send out the letter, and she does. “Merry fucking Christmas!” (Wow MJ Healy telling all her friends she has flaws? We love character development)

-Everyone reflects on what they learned (very cliché but it works). Frankie and Jo rekindle their friendship. Jo has a new girlfriend. Frankie and Phoenix decided to be friends. (You Learn)

Another bullshit update on life in general

Work has kept me busy, and I’ve been trying to get more done creatively and around the house, as well.

This was the first weekend in awhile I didn’t do any (or much) meal prep, since we had enough in the freezer to last us for all the dinners this week, and even a few lunches for Marc.  I made a dozen eggs, cut up and roasted almost 5 lbs of potatoes, and called it a day.

I cancelled the physical therapist, because between work, gym, housekeeping and trying to do something other than being a machine I did not have time for an additional two rounds of exercises every single day.  We were getting up at 5 AM, leaving for work at 6:30 AM, leaving work for home at 5 PM, getting home from the gym around 7, then eating for a half hour.  It was not going to happen.

We ended up cancelling the gym membership, because -- as much as we want to go -- we are just too tired and hungry after an hour-long commute to be like, “Yay, let’s do something tedious and exhausting for a half hour!”

The long term goal was to cancel the membership anyway, however.  I told Marc I want us to concentrate on finishing the sheetrock in the former “cat room” this coming weekend so that we actually use it for its intended purpose, which was exercise.  I have that barre I bought last year that I haven’t had time or room to use even once, and the treadmill and hand weights is just sitting and collecting dust.  So anyway, that’s the plan for next weekend.

We will also be fostering two cats in the next couple weeks, and trying to find them a home.  Long story short we met an artist at one of the galleries downtown, very nice guy, and his friend or nephew or I forget has recently knocked up his girlfriend and decided, “Well, we need to move and get rid of the cats I guess!”

So they’re two year-old sisters, and he wants them to stay together, which is fine.  Like Rosie, they actually look very young, like maybe only 5 months old.  They have never been to the vet in their life, so no shots, and neither of them are fixed, which means it will be on us to take care of all that before they get adopted out.  I’m sure he’s going to be a great Dad [/sarcasm].

When Marc found out that the cats needed a full vet workup, including spay, he was initially resistant due to the cost.  I said okay, if you’re not comfortable with it you’re not comfortable with it, and went upstairs to investigate our options.  The Walmart just opened up a “Vet IQ” clinic that does basic veterinary care, and we can utilize a local spay clinic for about $50 per cat, so on that end alone we’d be shelling out less than $300 (there’s always food and litter, of course).

After awhile Marc came up and was like, “I think I was a little hasty, I’m sure we can make it work.” After I told him the anticipated costs he was much more into it, so that’s good.  Hopefully we won’t have any trouble finding a home for them.

Rosie is doing well at feeding time in her crate!  It has not stopped her from being an absolute maniac spaz about food, but there is almost no growling at all while she eats now.  She goes in her crate, Marc covers it up with a towel, and she eats with seemingly less hysterical anxiety.  I’ll call it a tentative win.

Rosie, by the way, loves Bones. Bones can usually take her or leave her, although his tolerance level is much higher when she’s not acting the spaz, although you see moments of affection for her as well.  She greets him with a nice long body rub when they cross paths, and yesterday Marc caught him grooming her head.  It does my heart good.

At the risk of jinxing myself, I’ve been doing much better at bowling for the past few weeks!  I did decently at league on Friday, and when we went for our Sunday practice I had a series of something like 145, 106 and 140.  Considering I was lucky to break 100 a couple months ago I’m feeling very encouraged.

What has worked for me, honestly, is throwing out a lot of convention wisdom.  Marc has always been very patient with me, explaining game theory and approach and all that, but no matter how much I tried to put it all together it just wasn’t working.  And I was really, really trying.

Then, a few weeks ago, I was chatting with someone about Dyscalculia, and did a bit more casual reading about it.  I was reminded that it often causes issues with spatial awareness, something I can absolutely vouch for (I actually suspect it’s part of what’s caused me to have such persistent problems with perspective and anatomy over the years, although that’s a discussion for another time.)

So I started keeping that in mind when we play: I used the techniques that I knew were helpful, but in any aspect where I was supposed to do one thing, but consistently got unexpected and problematic results, I tried to go more by “feel”.

It’s hard to explain why this works, but it has so far.  Basically, I had to throw out the notion of bowling at “angles”, and became more of a straight-shooter, keeping in mind that my ball does have a tendency to hook left.  I got something like 3 or 4 strikes in one game on Friday!

Which is not to say that I’m suddenly a good bowler, because I’m not, but I’m better, which is what I wanted.  What’s annoying is when (admittedly well-meaning) people are like, “Here’s what you’re doing wrong!” and try to teach me about techniques which I already know, but which just don’t work for me.

This happened two weeks ago I think, and I’m sure the lady meant well, but she also was ignoring me when I said multiple fucking times, “I understand, but I have spatial awareness problems, that doesn’t work for me.”

Like, repeating something at me over and over is not going to make it any more true.  I hear what you’re saying, you’re just wrong.

So in other news I finished two more of the Mori Girl Cats, and that dumb little werewolf thing that was strictly for my own amusement.  (Someone was like, “That would make a great t-shirt,” and haha, I’m not fucking falling for that one again.)  I also organized the office / computer area of the Geek Room, we stashed away the last of the convention stuff, and it feels much more clean and open and neat.  A place I actually want to hang out, and not anxiously work while avoiding the pile of shit sitting behind me!

Last night I also installed Sims 3 and treated myself to a handful of expansion and “stuff” packs.  I only had enough time to create one Sim last night, but I already look forward to giving him a cold.

Unrelated, but I meant to talk about something that happened last Wednesday, when I was out running my Mom around to her appointments and whatnot.

So… for anyone who didn’t follow me on Facebook or my old Tumblr, the short version is that my Mom and I have a very long and complicated history. She was not a very good mother, she is a textbook covert narcissist.  She was an alcoholic for many, many years which caused serious and life-altering problems for me as a teenager and young adult, and after she got sober she transitioned to a prescription drug addiction which further deteriorated our already tenuous and fraught relationship, and landed both her and my stepfather in financial ruin.

About a year and a half ago, to help save them from the road to homelessness, we helped them sell their old house and moved them to Bucks County to live about 10 minutes from us, in a mobile home park.  We helped them get it fixed up, we help with maintenance, running errands, etc.  It’s a very cute little house, and although it took some time I think they see that now, and that their lives are better off.

When they first moved up here my mother was still on prescription drugs, but she very quickly found that it was impossible to find a new doctor to continue prescribing her the same pharmaceutical cocktails she wanted.  And boy did she fucking try. She’s already changed doctors at least three or four times since moving here, whipping out her favorite refrain of “I don’t think this doctor knows what they’re talking about!” every time they’re like, “Yeah, you don’t need to be on a steady stream of opiates.”

Eventually the lack of drugs caught up with her, the withdrawal passed, and for the past year or so she and I have actually gotten along okay.  She is still, and always will be, a difficult person, and I worry about whether or not she’ll find a doctor to start filling prescriptions again, but until then things are… okayish.

Anyway, that’s the long back story.

Back when they were still living at their old house, Marc and I would periodically go to visit them.  My Mom was always drugged out of her gourd, so I fucking hated going, but I had to do my duty, and she made every excuse imagineable for why she couldn’t come visit us.  So once a month we’d pack up, trek over to her house, order take-out, hang out for a while, then go back home again.

Except my Mother would do this thing where, after the food arrived, she would put the plates out, and then she would continue to gather plates and reorganize the kitchen while everyone was sitting down, serving themselves and eating.  

Like, the food would be on the table, we’d all be halfway through our meals and well on our way to being done, and my Mom would still be in the kitchen sorting around in the drawers for a mystery spoon or bowl that she needed, then finding it, washing it out, drying it, realizing it was the wrong one, putting it away, etc.

Eventually she would come out while everyone else was finishing up, serve herself a tablespoon of food, eat half, and then talk about how full she was.

For a while we would be like, “Mom… everyone is eating. We have everything we need. We literally don’t need anything else. Just come in and eat,” and she would ignore us.  Eventually I just stopped caring, and let her do her thing while the rest of us ate.  The sooner we finished the sooner we could leave.

I don’t know how else to describe her behavior apart from manic.  Like, when it was time to order, if I asked her for a menu, she would bring me the menu, and for fifteen minutes after I had called to place the order she would still be rooting through the drawers looking for more / other menus.  She would get herself so worked up that sometimes while we were sitting downstairs hanging out she’d have to go up and be sick.

All this just to give you a sense of what she used to be like.

Anyway.  I’m driving her home from an appointment on Wednesday, and she’s commenting how all of us just naturally turn into their mothers as we get older, even though we don’t want to.  In that I stayed dead silent through this observation I think she recognized that I disagreed.  So then she moved on to how different some daughters are from their mothers, especially in the kitchen.

And she said to me, “Like when I cook, I have to clean as I go along, I can’t just put everything in the sink until later.  Remember when you used to come over to eat, and you’d say to me, ‘Mom, come and eat, the food is ready!’ and I’d be so busy cleaning up that I wouldn’t even realize!”

And I’m like, “....”

Because that’s not what happened.  That’s not even fucking remotely what happened.  So she has spun the reality where she is an out-of-control manic drug addict and spun it into a funny story about how she’s such a neat freak that she doesn’t realize it’s time to eat.

I was sorely tempted to correct her, but at the last second realized it wouldn’t make a difference either way.  She is never going to look back on her behavior with any kind of clarity, and trying to force her to do so would just make the day end on a sour note.  If she wants to live in delusion, that’s on her.  I can tolerate it, but I’m certainly not going to feed into it by saying something like, “Yes, that’s precisely how it happened.”

She’ll have to learn to interpret the silence on her own.

Anyway, I guess that’s it.  Greatly looking forward to getting home and having a nice night on the couch, or maybe playing Sims some more.  I may even make some tea.

How I Gave Birth, Almost Died and Lived to Tell About It

This is a speedy disclaimer - Before you read this,https://real-123movies.best/other-brands/kissanime  if you don't mind comprehend that there are a few regions that some may think about realistic. The queasy may welcome the admonition. My own story underneath is expected for enlightening purposes as it were.

"What doesn't kill you makes you more grounded." This is the idea that propped up through my psyche as I lay on a trauma center cart only days in the wake of bringing forth my girl. That, and how and for what reason is this incident?

I'm losing track of the main issue at hand. Let me begin once again...

The day I discovered that I was pregnant, it was 2008 and I was preparing to go to work. I recollect that I was wearing a splendid yellow and white flower dress finished off with a white trimmed cardigan. After work, I planned to see the new Sex and the City film with my sweethearts. Realizing that there would presumably be a Cosmo or two in my future, I added, "take a pregnancy test" to my morning schedule. I needed to watch that it is protected to drink a grown-up refreshment. Call it instinct. (I'm a Charlotte, coincidentally.)

When I see that pink in addition to sign, I hopped on my resting spouse waving around the pee stick and shouting, "I'm pregnant!" We had formally begun pursuing for a child a half year earlier and I figured that following quite a while of anti-conception medication pills it would have taken longer than it, yet there we were, pregnant. I would have been drinking water at the films.

My pregnancy was uninteresting, save for the way that I created gestational diabetes. I practically calculated that this would be the situation because of numerous components, my age, weight, and hereditary qualities. I wound up being recommended drug to help control that viewpoint.

I was 35 when I planned to convey. Since I was viewed as a high-hazard pregnancy, my primary care physician booked a period for me to come in to actuate work with Pitocin.

On Friday, January 30, 2009, I went through the day experiencing work. The specialist came in intermittently to check how far along I was. Close to the furthest limit of the day, the specialist clarified that my infant was "just right" in any case referred to medicinally as occiput back or OP position. She had a go at coming to in and controlling the position, yet my obstinate child was not having it, and her heartrate would drop.

Subsequent to talking about with my primary care physician, I selected a caesarian area to abstain from worrying the child anything else than was fundamental. After a fast prep for medical procedure, I was whisked away to conceive an offspring. It seemed like it took a couple of moments and before I knew it, my girl, Olivia, was conceived at 8:50pm.

I was unable to hold her as my arms were lashed down, which I surmise is basic work on during medical procedure - no thrashing about and keeping a clean climate. I needed to trust that the specialist will shut me down. When I had returned to my room, I held her unexpectedly. It was sublime and she was the most delightful young lady on the planet. My family encircled us and it is something I'll generally love, holding her unexpectedly.

Since I had the C-segment, I was in the emergency clinic for four days and Olivia had jaundice and spent most of her days in the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) getting phototherapy. We were both awaiting our opportunity until we returned home. While at the emergency clinic, I thought that it was difficult to get settled. I was having torment over my left bosom, beneath my shoulder. Attendants revealed to me that it was gas because of the prescription and that it would pass. I in the long run requested an acid neutralizer as the torment endured. I figured in the end, I would pass gas and I would at last be finished with the torment.

When the child and I got our spotless doctor's reports, we set off for home. Excuse my gruffness when I state that I actually had not "honked". In the long run the torment was awful to the point that I needed to rest sitting up as resting aggravated it. Peculiar, I thought, however didn't ponder it.

Subsequent to being home for a day, my significant other and I took Olivia to her first pediatrician arrangement. In transit home, I referenced to my significant other that this gas, or the absence of passing it, was truly beginning to incur significant damage. I called my OBGYN to check whether she could endorse an all the more impressive stomach settling agent as the over-the-counters were not cutting it.

In talking with the assistant and clarifying my issues, she put me on pause to talk with the specialist. Once more, I thought, odd. For what reason does the specialist need to converse with me about passing gas?

My PCP jumped on the line and asked me a progression of inquiries - Where is your torment? Would you be able to rests? Is it accurate to say that you are experiencing difficulty relaxing? I answer with, over my left bosom, no - resting is excessively excruciating, in light of the fact that when I do, I am experiencing difficulty relaxing.

She said that I have to get to the trauma center and that she will call the clinic with respect to my appearance. I'm heartbroken, what? I was shocked. Furthermore, indeed, after this, I'm actually thinking, "this for gas?"

She stated, "You have a potential pneumonic embolism and I need you to go to the ER to preclude it."

Recalling this discussion, I need to state, I had no clue about what she was discussing at that point. In any case, I handed-off the data to my significant other and we went to see my mom. I revealed to her that I needed to go to the emergency clinic per my physician's instructions. My mother took the infant and I kissed Olivia disclosing to her that I would be directly back. Much to my dismay that I just misled my girl.

At this point, the torment was getting more serious. I looked into the ER and saw that I was taken right back, in spite of different patients in the lounge area. They began checking my vitals - pulse, oxygen admission, tuning in to my heart - all the typical stuff you see on TV.

Medical attendants had put those stickers with snaps on them and I was being snared to a machine. The medical attendant requested that I rests. At that point it hits me, I was unable to rests since I was unable to relax. It hurt - my chest was harming. Tears began to shape and I was believing that I was having a coronary failure. I was heaving out, "I can't relax! I can't relax!"

I took a gander at my better half and I thought, "I'm unfortunately you may be a single parent since I am passing on". Up until this point in my life, I had never broken a bone, never had an emergency clinic remain and now I genuinely felt that I was passing on.

They sat me back up and that was better. I was all the while having torment however I could inhale little heaves of breath. The ER specialist said that he planned to send me for a CT examine. He imagined that I had a blood coagulation in my lungs. A blood coagulation. In my lungs. What? How? Why?

The ER specialist affirmed after the CT examine that I did actually have a blood coagulation in my lungs and I was admitted to the medical clinic. I began to cry, I just had an infant, settled up with the clinic two or three days prior and now I was back.

Obviously, I was intellectually depleted, genuinely frail and seriously discouraged. I kept on siphoning for bosom milk while in the emergency clinic. My significant other would return the milk to Olivia consistently. She wouldn't take to recipe and I felt it was my obligation to give her what I could. I felt remorseful for being endlessly from her and it is as yet something that frequents me right up 'til the present time.

Let me simply state that my mom was our lifeline. I was, and keep on being, so thankful to my mom for dealing with Olivia while I was in and out of the clinic. My folks even moved to Pennsylvania from Texas and found a house two or three squares from our own.

I was put on blood-thinners and was informed that I would be on them for as long as a half year, possibly more. I went through an additional five days in the emergency clinic while attempting to recuperate from the blood coagulation. I was told later that a blood coagulation might have murdered me and I cried some more.

Forgoing the medical clinic didn't imply that I was from the forested areas. I was set up with a medical caretaker who might go to our home day by day to keep an eye on me and take blood work. I spent a greater part of the night and a decent bit of the day resting. At the point when I wasn't resting, I was siphoning. Because of my nonappearance, Olivia didn't take to breastfeeding and likely clung to my mom more so than she had with me. In any case, I siphoned. In my psyche, it was the main thing that associated us as mother and little girl and it was the least I could do.

Around a month and a half subsequent to having had the infant, I saw that my C-area scar was delicate, more so than expected. In certain spots, it gave the idea that puss was framing. I brought this up to the specialist and in light of the fact that I was on blood thinners, it had returned to the ER.

Turns out, my C-segment had gotten tainted. Spots along the scar showed up marginally green even. The specialist had the option to draw on my gut a diagram where the disease showed up, similar to a guide of a nation. I'm informed that they will regard me as though I have MRSA.

As per WebMD, "Methicillin-safe Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA ) is a bacterium that causes diseases in various pieces of the body. It's harder to treat than most strains of staphylococcus aureus - or staph - in light of the fact that it's impervious to some generally utilized anti-infection agents."

The blood more slender that I was being treated with in pill structure, was currently going to be in infusion structure. Evidently, if the requirement for medical procedure were to emerge, the inversion of the impacts of the blood more slender works faster whenever controlled through infusion.

I'm commonly a glass half-full individual however on that day, I really wanted to imagine that the world was against me. I was back in the medical clinic, away from my infant girl, experiencing blood cluster torment and now my C-area entry point was tainted and I needed to get infusions at regular intervals. Gracious and these infusions were given in my gut. Indeed, my stomach. This is where you get these infusions. I was feeling very crushed.

I hope you are recovering from the kidney stones well, and sorry to hear about the pain you suffered! What lead up to it?

Kidney stones just happen to some people. There are a variety of causes. Some of them are dietary, some of them are just kind of random. I’m pretty sure in my case, it was a combination of both diet and side effects of a home remedy.

Bad teeth kind of run in the family a little bit. My mom had her first dentures when she was 19. I will probably need dentures at some point in my life (and maybe soon, the way things in there feel sometimes). Because of the history of bad teeth, my Mom let me know of an old home remedy for toothaches: Vitamin C. Most toothaches are some form of an infection, and Vitamin C boosts your immune system, so if you bulk up on it, you can let your body’s natural defenses take care of the toothache without having to see a dentist for antibiotics.

This comes from a dentist my Mom visited in the 70′s or 80′s, who prescribed her 22,000mg of Vitamin C per day for a tooth infection. Over my years of having occasional toothaches, I’d usually take maybe a quarter of that, but a few years ago I ended up hitting the 22,000mg number because I had a particularly bad toothache that just wouldn’t go away, and at the time, we just couldn’t afford to go to a dentist.

The toothache eventually subsided but I didn’t like taking so much Vitamin C (for one thing, that much started giving me an upset tummy). My Mom assured me there were no side effects, and that it was impossible to overdose on it. I was skeptical.

So I looked in to it. Turns out, there was ONE side effect of taking excessive amounts of Vitamin C: an increased risk of kidney stones, as I guess the excess minerals in the vitamin tablets can coalesce in to a stone. So for years, I always had that hanging over my head, knowing that probably some day, that would be a problem I’d have to deal with.

As for what it felt like, well, I’ll hide that behind a “read more” tag for people who are squeamish.

To be perfectly honest with you, this is actually the second kidney stone I’ve passed – the first one was right after New Years 2017. I didn’t tell anyone on the internet about this (that I can remember), it was something I largely kept to myself because I was embarrassed.

I think it was around January 3rd that I woke up, went to the bathroom, and as I was going it kind of burned a little bit. Nothing outrageously painful, but definitely uncomfortable. Obviously I started to panic, but I figured I’d give it 24 hours, see if it kept happening, and then decide where to go from there. By the end of the 24 hours (morning #2), I’d made a realization: the pain was moving, slowly, down my urinary tract. Every time I’d go to the bathroom, it would move a little closer to the, uh, “tip.”

Something was in there, and it was going to come out. I knew it had to be a kidney stone. I’d known from looking up kidney stones from Vitamin C that there’s not really a way to “treat” stones. Most doctors prescribe painkillers to manage the pain and you just have to pass it on your own. Only in extreme cases with urinary tract blockages (read: you can’t pee) are more invasive treatment options considered, like ultrasound to blast the stone in to dust, or surgery to physically remove it.

So I started guzzling water in an effort to push the thing out. By the morning of the third day, it felt like it was right there, like I should be able to physically see it if I looked. Were kidney stones big enough to see with the naked eye? To be honest, I didn’t know. But I kept guzzling water and sure enough, right before bed that night, I got a split second of VERY intense pain, and then it vanished. I didn’t see anything drop in to the toilet bowl, so I figured that, no, I guess maybe kidney stones were just too small to see with the naked eye. I flushed, went to bed, and that would have been the end of it.

About a week later, I stood up off the toilet from having a “bowel movement” and noticed in the toilet bowl a little strip of pink where my urine had been splashing. Blood, in other words. Welp, there was no avoiding it now, I needed to go see a doctor. Doctor confirmed what I already knew: it was probably a kidney stone, and it probably just tore some stuff up on its way out and that’s what was bleeding. The bleeding should stop within a couple weeks. And it did.

And then it came back. Every 4-8 weeks, I’d stand up from sitting on the toilet to another pink stripe of blood on the bowl. Since the doctor told me that was normal, I tried not to worry about it. The further away from January I got, the less frequent finding blood in the toilet became. I was healing, just slowly. Everything was fine. Probably.

Nine months later, we’ll say around September 2nd (a Saturday), I woke up with an INTENSE burning pain in my back on the left side. It made me feel sick. I didn’t even want to move. The day before, me and my Mom had been going through a storage unit out here in Nevada looking for a specific item that we’d packed that we needed now. I figured I’d thrown my back out. That’s happened to me before. As I sat up, over the next 20-30 minutes, the pain faded away and vanished. Fair enough, maybe it was just a cramp or something. But for the next two days, I felt incredibly nauseous. And, by the end of the second day, not only did I notice another pink strip of blood in the toilet bowl, but something about my urine just did not smell right (in the sense that it did not smell like pee normally smells).

I tried not to think about it, even though I knew what the symptoms meant. It got to be harder to ignore when, every single time I had to sit down for a bathroom visit, I’d stand up to a little bit of blood in the toilet bowl. Every. Single. Time.

Uh oh.

Thursday the 7th rolls around and I’m up late as usual, when, around 3 or 4am, the pain in my back comes back. It grows, slowly, in waves. The pain would peak, and then fall off over a period of 20-30 minutes, only to come back even stronger on the next go around. “This is it.” I thought. I filled a big glass of water and chugged it down, then filled it up again, and made it about halfway through the second glass.

Nothing happened. I mean, literally, nothing happened. I was sloshing around with something like a liter of water in me and nothing was coming back out. It felt like I had to go, but I’d push and I’d push to a couple of droplets. Instead, the pain was getting more intense more quickly. I couldn’t stand up anymore. I rolled around on the floor of my bedroom, and later the floor of the bathroom, as I began sweating bullets from the pain, which was now beginning to move across my side to my bladder. I was in so much pain it was becoming difficult to think clearly. A good example is that it was like the feeling a man gets when they’re kicked in the groin, except it not only never goes away, it just keeps getting more intense over time. I have never in my life felt pain like this.

Finally, 7am rolled around, and I couldn’t take it any longer. I was dying. At the very least, I feared a blockage. I hobbled my way down the hall to where my Mom was staying, and I woke her up. “We’ve got a big problem.”

“Why? What now?” she asked, barely awake.

“I think I need to go to the hospital.”

We hadn’t gotten any of our medical insurance transferred to Nevada yet, so going to the doctor was going to be expensive. But I couldn’t stand it anymore. I explained to her that I hadn’t been able to go to the bathroom for a few hours despite drinking a huge amount of water, and just like that, she began looking up hospitals for me.

The emergency room visit took about six hours. They put me on an IV, gave me some painkillers, did a CAT scan of my abdomen, drew blood and had me pee in a cup (which, perhaps because of the painkillers, had upgraded from a few droplets to a tiny trickle). The doc came in and confirmed: Yep! It’s a kidney stone. Fortunately, not big enough to require surgery – stones up to 5 or 6mm typically pass on their own, and mine was in the 3mm range, and according to the doc, it was “almost out.”

I received a prescription for Percocet (for the pain) and Zofran (for the nausea) and was sent packing, but not without some advice from the nurse:

I was advised to “stay on top” of the pain. I didn’t want to be trapped waiting for my Percocet to take hold with pain that intense. So basically, take regular dosages until the stone passes.

Both Percocet and Zofran would make me tremendously sleepy, so there was a good chance I was going to sleep through a lot of the pain.

The last items they gave me was a funnel with a filter inside of it – I was instructed to pee in to the funnel and catch the stone when it comes out, which I was then meant to take to a urologist for analysis. The other item was the container I was meant to put the stone in (a little plastic jar with a locking lid).

So I went home and I slept. And slept. And slept. Over the next two days, I slept so much that it was starting to get scary. I’d sleep 18 hours a day. I tried to go without my Percocet, but I still couldn’t stay awake. I had no energy. It took me 20 minutes to unfold a camping chair in my bedroom for me to sit in because I kept needing to rest after exerting the smallest amount of movement. And when I’d take a deep breath, there was this kind of aching pain around the periphery of my lungs. After practically falling a sleep mid-sentence telling my Mom about all this (I was nearly in tears, I only remember weakly saying “Something feels wrong and I don’t know what”), she decided it would be a good idea to talk to the hospital. They advised her I should be brought in immediately.

And thinking about it now, if it wasn’t for my Mom in this situation, I might be dead by now.

They diagnosed me with pneumonia. At some point in my drugged up stupor, they figure I must have aspirated (read: almost barfed and then some of that fluid went down the wrong pipe in to my lungs, and since I was so out of it, I never coughed it up). I was put on oxygen, given more CAT scans, more blood drawn, more study. One doctor used the term “septic” to describe what my lungs looked like. They were starting to collapse. So, I spent the weekend in a hospital bed, hooked up to an IV, hooked up to a heart rate monitor, with even more medication. More pain killers, plus now antibiotics, and something called “Flomax” – medication normally reserved for men with prostate problems, it helps open the pipes and increase urine flow strength. In other words, they wanted that kidney stone out of me now.

By Tuesday the 12th, I was allowed to come back home. My pneumonia had cleared up quite a bit, I no longer needed an oxygen mask, and I was clawing at the walls to get out. I still had occasional back pain, but it was subsiding. Still hadn’t passed the stone, but that was irrelevant. I didn’t want to be there anymore.

As I got dressed and prepared to leave, the Doc made one final check in with me to say: “Don’t come back.” When I smiled at him, he smiled back. “I’m serious. I never want to see you in this hospital again.”

Now the prescriptions I was sent home with included more Percocet (for extreme pain), triple strength Ibuprofin (for mild pain, with the instructions that it should be taken with antacid pills), two types of antibiotics (for the pneumonia) and more Flomax (to push the stone out).

By September 14th, I started to notice this red-ish, ashy gravel in the urine filter they gave me. Was that the stone? Had it broken in to a thousand tiny pieces? Over the next few days, as I kept going, I kept peeing out more and more of this ashy stuff. It didn’t hurt, and there was getting to be a lot of it, in big chunks.

I later learned that this is normal in the symptoms of a kidney stone. This ashy stuff was coagulated blood and tissue from the kidney when the stone tore its way out.

Finally, on the afternoon of September 22nd, a BUNCH of the red ashy stuff came out, WAY more than ever before, and right as I felt like I was done peeing, I got a surprise little extra burst of urine at the end and a jolt of pain. Wait? Was that it? Nothing seemed to fall in to the filter, but… maybe that was it?

I dumped the ashy stuff in to the container and thought maybe it was over.

As I sat down, I noticed something felt different. For guys (at least some guys) when you shift around in your seat, your uh, “business” obviously moves around, too. And when that happened to me, I could… physically feel something. Something was in there. In the “final stretch” so to speak. It hadn’t come out yet. It was waiting for one last stream to make the last step of its journey. But every time I moved, I knew it was in there, because I could feel it move around in the “pipe.”

Finally, long about midnight, after a lot of holding it in and being worried about the pain and how much it might hurt to finally get this thing out of me, I just… went.

Plonk!

In to the filter drops what looks sort of like a big, hard, crusty booger. Bigger than a grain of rice, a little bit smaller than a pea. About a quarter of an inch, we’ll say. Compared to what I expected, it looks titanic. Monstrous, even. That was in me? That came out of there? It’s huge! A lot bigger than 3 milometers! (Wait. How big is a milometer?)

And… it didn’t hurt. At all. The jolt of pain I felt earlier in the afternoon must’ve been all there was. The stone finishing its journey, that last little bit of distance, didn’t hurt even a little bit. It basically just fell out right in to the filter.

Depending on how you look at it, this stone either took two weeks or nine and a half months to come out. And who knows! Maybe there’s more hiding in there. I’m also, at least for the next month, probably at an increased risk of kidney infections.

And for all the “oh it didn’t hurt” of that last leg, it really cannot be understated how much “flank” (back) pain I was in for almost a full week. It was literally unbearable.

But it’s over! For now! Hooray!

(Well, except for the pinched nerve the hospital bed gave me that has yet to clear up...)

whats been your experience with top surgery? did you like your doc and all

Yeah! Top surgery went well for me! I mean, I would have liked a friendlier doctor - the guy I went to was pretty dull and quiet and was all business so at times I felt kind of uncomfortable with him. But he knew what he was doing. He seemed shady when I asked him to show me pictures of past patients’ results, but I realized that the reason he was hesitant was because almost all of the photo comparisons he had were of patients who had far more complicated chests than mine so it wouldn’t have been an accurate reference for me anyway. A couple of them had previous damage from improper binding so their results didn’t look too good but it was not the doctor’s fault, it was their fault for binding with tape.

So here’s the story of the actual surgery: My surgery was done at around 7:30 AM on October 3rd 2016. I was honestly pretty relaxed going in there. It wasn’t too busy or noisy at the little surgical center I went to (which was connected to a larger hospital) so I didn’t have to lay there on the cot waiting and waiting and waiting to go in. I went in the little curtained room thing, answered some questions, they had me change, the doc marked up my chest, they hooked me up with an IV, sat for a couple minutes, and then they pumped that happy drug in and rolled me through the doors. I remember getting into the surgical room. I was too high off that relaxant at that point to even be bothered by the fact that they’d already started strapping my arms down like Jesus on the cross. I remember looking around and seeing like 20 people which was not what I expected at all.  Then I was out like a light. The surgery took about 2 hours, and I woke up high as a kite in the same curtained room. There were two nurses. I remember being so fucking happy looking down at my chest and seeing it bandaged up. I lifted up the lip of the bandages and honestly couldn’t see anything underneath because it was so tight but I knew my chest was flat as a board. Nothing hurt (yet). I didn’t even notice the drains. I was just chilling there all loopy and I kept waving at people when they passed by the open curtains. Pretty sure I asked the same nurse how the surgery went like 10 times. Then my doctor came in and said everything went well and that he did need to put drains in (he told me to plan for them but it was never a promise that I’d need them.)At that point, I was awake enough that they moved me over to a big chair, switched me from the johnny to my flannel shirt + sweatpants, and gave me some water. I wasn’t nauseous, thank god. And I wasn’t loopy anymore either. I could feel the drains now that the hospital-strength pain meds were wearing off.Then I was literally ECSTATIC when I saw my Mom, Dad and (surprise) Grandma coming towards me. (Yes, Grandma was a surprise. I did not know she would be visiting. I guess my Mom and Dad went to hang out with her at her house nearby until I was done, and so she figured she’d come visit.) I was so excited and showing them how flat my chest was even with the bandages on and showing them how weird the drains looked. I’m really chill with my family. They were nervous about me getting the surgery, obviously, but there was definitely a good vibe in the room now that I had made it past the ‘big’ part. My Grandma impulsively bought my family the biggest party tray of cookies I’ve ever seen. After my Grandma left, the nurse showed my parents and I how to empty the drains and measure the drainage. They gave the little drainage chart and a little study guide about how the drains worked. Every 12 hours I would have to empty the fluids from the drains into a little measuring cup [PHOTO - blood warning] Then my parents helped me get my sneakers on and the nurse wheeled me out to the car. I was given my cell phone back at this point, of course, so I spent the whole ride home messaging my friends that I survived, lol. One unusual thing that happened though is that my seatbelt was too tight on the external portion of my right drain. About 5 minutes away from home, my right side started feeling very warm. And then I didn’t note anything of it until we were parked in the driveway and I unbuckled my seatbelt to find a gigantic patch of blood on the bandages. I went into panic mode thinking I broke the drain (I didn’t think something was wrong with my chest because there was no obvious pain). But after figuring out that nothing was actually wrong and that the blood was just unable to travel downwards through the drain (therefore traveling back into the drain port and leaking out from there), I was fine and just mildly pissed off that my ace bandages had a blood stain. [PHOTO] Thankfully, my Mom had foot surgery 3 months before and she had extra ace wraps that I just used instead. Be careful with seatbelts, guys.  

So once I was in the house, I basically stayed there for the next 5 days. I was upstairs 24/7 pretty much. The only time I went outside during that time was when my rat Ozzy died 3 days after my surgery and I went with my Dad to bury him in the yard. That fucking sucked. But aside from the dead pet, those 5 recovery days were aesthetic as fuck. Since it was October, I made sure to decorate the shit out of my room while I could still lift my arms. I had Halloween lights up every where [PHOTO], and I had a bunch of Halloween candy to pig out on [PHOTO]. I ate like a fat ass when I was hungry, but I wasn’t very hungry due to to percocet (oxy) that I was prescribed for pain. I actually ended up losing 5 pounds in 5 days due to not eating big meals (plus my high metabolism) even though I certainly ate a lot of cookies, candies, and Frostys (my aunt kept calling me and insisting she come visit and bring me Wendy’s, lol. She’s an occupational therapist and so she was very intrigued by how I was recovering and visited almost every night to talk with me). I’d also bought a new TV a few days before the surgery too. So I had my TV and PS4 set up right in front of my bed so I wasn’t ever lacking entertainment. I watched Breaking Bad during the day and then Bob Ross before going to sleep. The pain meds made me so sleepy so I usually would just pass out watching Bob Ross, haha. I made a habit of it too. 10/10 would recommend passing out while watching Bob Ross. Usually the end credit music would wake me up and remind me to turn the TV off, haha. Also, @xrdpan gave me this very cute little guy as a gift - [PHOTO]And yeah, this is getting a little off topic. But I definitely had a memorable week of recovery. Sometimes I wish I could do it again for another day or two. Cause despite how uncomfortable the drains were and how much weight my scrawny ass lost, I was so relaxed and got to watch a LOT of TV.

So back to post-op care - I was not given a binder after surgery. I had to use the ace bandages while I still had the drains in, and then I was given a prescription for a compression tank top (that i literally had to go to this lingerie store to get) once the drains were out. That was kind of annoying. I had hoped for a decent surgical vest like what most people get, but yeah. 

My drains were in for 10 days. They were uncomfortable, but I didn’t have any bleeding complications or any complications at all so they definitely did their job. It didn’t hurt when they came out either. It felt awesome once they were out and I could really get a good look at my chest. The drains caused snake-like lumps all throughout my chest and it looked weird. Drains in - [PHOTO]Drains out - [PHOTO]

And as for sensation, my chest was very numb for about 1 month including the nipples, and then was half-numb for another couple months. But after the 3 month point (which was around the time I didnt have to wear anymore compression), the sensation was coming back on it’s own very well. I’m 7 months post-op now and have all sensation back except for my right nipple which isn’t 100% numb but doesn’t really react to touch. I have a couple small fleshy spots, mainly on the left side, where they almost have too much feeling and are tender if pressed down on. It feels like a muscle thing. 

Uhhh so that’s an essay if I ever saw one! Hope you got something useful from it! I’m always down to talk about my experience and make everything more clear and possibly less scary for everyone who’s interested in top surgery. I had a good experience overall! No complications!

There's an opiod crisis in America. I read about it everyday. Thousands of people who take narcotics to get high. To blunt the pain of whatever is hurting them. Physically, emotionally, whatever. I don't even pretend to have any kind of solution.. I can only offer you an insiders perspective. My very first experience with the good stuff was right after I got married. I'd had a migraine for the third straight day.. I'd get them several times a year.. but this one wouldn't stop. My mom says enough is enough.. I'm taking you to urgent care. Kat had the kids.. otherwise she'd have driven.. she was concerned by now as well. Never had one last this long. At the urgent care.. the guy checks me out.. "are you allergic to anything?" "Are you ok with a couple of shots.. we'll get you feeling better" Not allergic.. hate shots.. but ok fine Demerol and Thorozine Nectar of the Gods I remember it to this day. Full disclosure time. I'm 24 now.. haven't yet run into the issues that are about to start soon. I dont really drink.. been drunk a handful of times. But I dont drink.. just never cared for it.. don't like the taste, don't like the feeling. I smoked some pot when I was 20-21 but I was always paranoid about getting busted.. plus now I have kids.. and you know what that means.. no money for pot. Tried cocaine a couple times. Kat and I would get a little for "date night". But we're talking birthday or anniversary stuff. So, pretty vanilla for a party guy. Just wasn't much of a chemical romance for me. My how things do change. Demerol and Thorozine No ecstasy so wonderful.. no bliss so complete. I went from being almost blind with pain.. to walking on a cloud.. I floated out the door to mom's station wagon. Such a pretty station wagon! My God.. look at that wood paneling! It sooo beautiful! I opened the door and folded myself in half to get in. Mom says "whatcha doing?" I don't wanna hurt the car by banging into it.. It's so tiny and beautiful... "I think you're covered.. put your feet on the floor.. put on your seatbelt please" Home again after the beautiful magic carpet ride full of neon and colors. In mom's beautiful woody station wagon. I floated thru door.. "Oh my, you look better" Kat laughs You are sooo. Pretty ! You know what would great ? Brownies! And sex!.. and sex brownies! And pizza.. we should have everybody over and BBQ. I'm going to lay down for few minutes, watch a movie.. but then sex brownies! Zzzzzzzz. 2 days later when I started coming around. I honestly have never felt that good in my life. 2 days of being completely pain free.. and floating on clouds. Never before.. certainly not since. The problem with being in chronic pain is this. It's chronic.. that means it NEVER stops. Some days arent too bad. You feel crappy... but honestly.. any person over 40 is familiar with feeling pain every single day. I just got a big headstart from everyone else. A lot of days.. far too many days. The pain is crippling. But most people like me have to figure out how to have a life despite that. So, on we soldier. I'm mid 30's... just really getting bad sick. My doctor is an Internist. The kind of general doctor that does innards. Dr. Feelgood was an amazingly good doctor. Everyone in town knew and loved him. Everything's going wrong all the time.. But Dr Feelgood is working overtime to fix it. I'm in serious pain.. everyday.. all day. But he gives me pain meds. Vicodin, Percocet, fiorinol, demerol, pills, patches, shots. We tried everything. I had access to sleeping pills, xanax, valium. Not all at once of course. But in hefty doses. I was dying.. and I just wanted it to be as pain free as possible. Dr. Feelgood was trying his best. There was a point in my life.. because of the years of taking so many narcotics.. I could take absolutely lethal doses without getting even a little buzz. I could get a migraine.. which at the time was common. Go into the office and get a shot of demerol.. and off to work I'd go. It got rid of the pain ok. But no more highs for poor Steve. The party is long over.. and I'm still always in agony. This was a big reason why I quit everything all at once. For the past 5 years Dr Feelgood has been banging his head against my wall. But we had the opportunity to move to another state.. I'd had my 2nd resection.. so this was as good as it was going to get. Off we go. For the next 3 years.. nothing. Some good days.. some bad.. but no drugs at all. But reality does tend to insert itself. The fact of my life is.. I Have to use narcotics most days..and there are millions of people like me. Used properly they are a miracle for us. Buy there are too many people who see how glamorous its is.. being a drug addict looks like one long party for Steve... lets try it! I do make it look glamorous. The problem today in 2017 is the government is seriously clamping down on legitimate prescriptions for legitimate patients. Every time my doctor prescribes narcotics. She gets a letter from uncle Sam. It tells her all the good drugs she's given out vs. How much other doctors have written. You never want to be on the naughty list. Dont stand out! That means they now have to ration out the good stuff. They can't have several patients getting narcotics. So those of us who have a legitimate reason to take them. Can't always get them. Most doctors practices will not even take you as a patient if you are on narcotics! Wont even talk to you about it. So here's my current nightmare. If I lose my current doctor.. I may not be able to get another.. ever. All because of the opioid epidemic It's happened already.. About 12 years ago.. after my 3rd bowel resection.. my GI. said we could try... Morphine. It's good for guts like yours. It helps with pain.. it causes constipation.. which can balance the scales with the diarrhea you always now have. Cuz of the fact that you have almost no intestines left. But there's rules.. you can only get so many per month. There will never be more. Don't ask. No other drugs from any other doctors. Ever. No drug seeking behavior. Ever. Dont feed it after midnight or get it wet. In 12 years I've never broken the rules. Not once. But I had started going to a pain management Doctor. She took over all prescriptions.. but same rules. Thats what they do. And again.. I followed the rules. But she was willing to up the doses over the years. And eventually I was getting some pretty good amounts. Now to be clear. I haven't gotten high from morphine since almost ever. It just helps the pain some.. keeps my guts pretty calm. But one day I get a form letter.. they're closing down the pain management aspect of their practice because of government pressures. Too much hassle. So I go back to my original GI who started me on it, to take it back over. But he just had to retire after serious back surgery. And his partner wont talk to me. RuhRow! What do I do Scooby doo? I was lucky enough to find someone for about a year.. she cut me way down.. but at least there was something. But this isn't really her specialty.. and she's getting the letters from uncle Sam. So.. fuck it.. I quit ! Cold turkey.. I planned it out so I could take off a month from work. Stocked up on ensure.. and T.P. Got ready for withdrawls. They were as horrible as you see on t.v. or movies. Basically it's like having the flu really bad for a couple weeks. After a month I was clean.. but my new nightmare was in full view. I am missing a large portion of my intestines after 3 bowel resections. It's called Short Bowel Syndrome. Everything that goes in.. goes right back out.. fast. No sight seeing along the way. If course the rapid pass through causes severe spasms and pain. I could no longer leave my bedroom. Not ever. I was on the toilet 10 times a day or more. And I barely ate at all. My new GI wasn't to happy about going the morphine route. I remember our appointment a couple months after I'd quit cold turkey. I wrote down my reasons why I wanted her to put me back on. I was bawling as I tried to convey how miserable I was.. I wanted my sad pathetic life back! I don't want to only be able to get out of bed so I could shit myself to death. I begged like dog. She agreed at a much lower dosage.. and of course.. all the same rules apply. Most days.. it's not even close to enough. But at least I can get out occasionally. Work a few hours a week. Play Pokemon Go with the grandkids and my beautiful wife. I get to have some little bit of a life. If anything happens to her.. or she just decides otherwise. My life will literally be over. My entire life is on the line. Every month. I go to pick up my refill prescription from her.. I think.. is this the month she cuts me off? I don't wanna die. I didn't do anything wrong. I don't have the answer to any of this. All I know is that there are thousands, maybe millions of people in this exact same boat. Narcotics are the only thing keeping them alive or letting them have some measure of relief from pain that you couldn't imagine in your worst dreams. Our governments solution right now is to take away all narcotics from everyone.. let God sort 'em out. Crack down on doctors who are trying to keep them alive. Cut funding for rehabilitation services and mental health. The 2 best tools to curb the opiod epidemic. These are just facts I'm sorry to say. I just don't understand how they can be so callous and cruel. I didn't do anything wrong. I don't deserve this.

Knowing from a young age that something was wrong with you was a strange feeling, especially when the people who were supposed to take care of you didn’t do their job. In the age of the internet it was easy for Hizashi to look up how he was feeling and go “hey, mom, dad, I think I have ADHD.” They agreed he did, but they never took him to the doctor for it. “If we make this official, you’ll never be a hero.”

He wanted to be a hero so, so bad. So, he stopped trying to fix his brain. It was hard, his grades went from being great to being not so good. The classes he cared about, he would excel in. He could lose himself in an English paper, to the point of forgetting to eat. And when it came to the subjects he just didn’t care about, it wasn’t that he was bad at them, he just didn’t care. He was smart, but he just didn’t apply himself. “Hizashi, if you would stop listening to that damn music, you could get into any Imperial University you wanted!” But, he didn’t want to get into some big Imperial University, he hadn’t even been sure he wanted to go to college. Shouta and Nemuri pushed him to apply to something small, but respectable, and together the three of them worked on Hizashi being a semi functioning person. Alarms and check ins helped him eat and sleep properly. It was nice. College saw a huge shift in his grades, given that he could actually pick what he wanted to take. His attention was constantly captivated, and he went from borderline failing to honors. It was nice, like maybe his stupid brain wouldn’t get the best of him. This improvement landed him a semester abroad in America. College was so different over there than in Japan. Parties were everywhere, and Hizashi was sitting on the fence of joining that life style. The loud music, the flashing lights, it was more his style than anything back home. Out in America he picked up a side job DJing for small little house parties. People paid him to play music and run his mouth, it was the dream! The party scene had its downfalls though: namely drugs. Weed, fantastic, amazing, everyone who wanted to should be able to smoke it! Alcohol, eh, take it or leave it. Ecstasy, after doing his research, he had become so picky about the stuff he never did it. Adderall though, that had been something else. The only thing he knew about the stuff was it was very, very illegal back home. Americans were often detained for having a legitimate prescription of the stuff. His friends had told him it was a lot like coke, just legal coke. “You’ll feel great. And studying will go by so quick.” Except, he didn’t feel great and studying didn’t go by very quickly. He had watched everyone bump the pill and decided to follow suit. Everyone at the party was having fun, geeked out of their mind. And he just sat there with a mild headache from snorting a pill. This amazing, finals enhancing drug did nothing for him. “How ya feelin’ Zash?” “Like I have a headache?” “....Dumbass, do you have ADD?” Oh… There went his brain ruining everything again. Before leaving America, he had gone to his college’s psychiatric facilities to try to get a concrete answer about his ADHD. What he got was… enough. A yes without it being explicit. “Technically, I can’t diagnose you, but I can screen you. At this school, you need a diagnosis to get meds. Outside of the school, this screening is all you need to get a prescription.” The person he had seen had been kind enough to not make anything official without Hizashi’s say so. Not with how mental illness was still seen in the world. For such an advanced society, the hero world still held many old stigmas that should have died away a long time ago. Mental illness was still such a messy topic that most agencies would rather ignore a great hero with a problem than actually try to help said hero. There were some quirks that could help, but ethics and morals came into play a lot. It caused many people to just lie about having any problems, and lying often times got people hurt. While he had been in America, there was an incident with a female hero. She had untreated PTSD and snapped during a mission, taking her life along with the life of another hero and a villain. It wasn’t her fault, if her agency, hell if anyone, had been willing to help her, she would probably still be here. Instead, there was a larger wedge driven in the hero community. When Hizashi moved back to Japan, he had two semesters of college left, but it felt like an eternity. Having a professional reaffirm his suspicions about his own mental health might have been worse than just going against the grain. He was hyper aware of all of his mood changes, any time something was overwhelming he would just freak out. His usual happy go lucky personality had died away under the weight of trying to beat this illness with no help. If he got anything official, he would be screwed. He would never be a hero, though, if he was honest with himself, that was why he was in college. He couldn’t be a hero. He needed a degree so he could teach. At least being a teacher, he could help the next batch of heroes, right? At some point in his hectic life, Nemuri and Shouta had basically become his roommates. He hadn’t been sure when or how, but it was nice. Nemuri was very motherly and Shouta was super logical. It was the perfect combination for when he would absolutely lose his shit during finals. Higher level classes meant more projects, and Hizashi took on too many classes. So, he lost sleep. He’d get anxious and try and finish a month long project in a weekend. He would get it done, but it cost him a lot. How his friends stayed with him was a miracle because by the end of college he could barely function. His straight A’s dropped to C’s because he just stopped caring. Still, he had managed to get that piece of paper that said he could teach. That’s what he had resigned himself to doing: teaching and maybe he’d pick up another DJing gig. It was fun. He needed fun. Shouta and Nemuri, though, were not too thrilled with how easily Hizashi had just given up on being a hero. “You know your provisional license is still good. You can finish up the National License.”

“I don’t think I can, Sho. The stress, the stigma. I.. I think I’m good. I’ll just teach the newbies. It’ll be fun.” That was a lie, but it was one he was willing to live with. He liked teaching his friends English, so maybe teaching kids would be like that. It had to be, because if he didn’t have teaching, he really didn’t have anything. He didn’t want to think about not having anything, but each day he went without a job looked more and more grim. If he had a normal brain then maybe he could be a proper adult and he could go and be this hero. He could save people and function, and not lose his shit over the dumbest thing. A part of him wanted to finally get diagnosed and get on medication, but he knew the minute he did that he signed away any chance he would ever get of being a hero. So, he stayed unmedicated. Just living day to day. Sometimes he would be perfectly fine, just existing in his apartment with his friends. Other days he was freaking out for no real reason. He had looked it up, and apparently because he wasn’t treating his illness he was slowly developing new ones. Namely anxiety and depression. He could tell it was straining his relationship with his friends, but he couldn’t get diagnosed. He just couldn’t, and with medication being so hard to get, he just decided to take matters into his own hands. Energy supplements and weed eventually became Hizashi’s go to once he got himself a job at a radio station. The stuff he was drinking was great, it had vitamins and all this other crap, had little sugar. It helped him focus unlike caffeine pills. At least, that’s how he reasoned with himself. He’d drink the powdery drink before a show, go on for the six hours he needed to be hyped up, then go home and share a joint with his friends before sleeping. Rinse and repeat. Thankfully, his boss at the radio station let him have full reign of the show. So when the drink would make him hyperfocus on his anxiety rather than his music, he’d just queue a non stop playlist and freak out at his desk. It sucked so bad, but it paid his rent. And usually Nemuri or Shouta was out on patrol during his sets so they would bring him something to calm him down. This new regiment went on for a couple months before Nemuri came home one night and threw a bottle of pills at him. Confused, Hizashi read the label over and over, squinting at the prescription and the name attached. “Concerta… Tatsuya… Nem, whose are these?” “Yours.” “Nem, seriously.” “Zashi, seriously.” That night they had a long talk about everything, how Nemuri had suffered from depression. How Shouta found the pharmacist willing to illegally help heroes. How very, very illegal the whole process was. They didn’t bring it up because the process wasn’t guaranteed and it involved some unsavory people. He wasn’t exactly happy that they had gone behind his back with this, but they all knew if he knew he wouldn’t have gone. So he was a little less mad. He didn’t take the medicine immediately. It stayed untouched for about a month, just sitting on his nightstand as he decided what he was going to do. On one hand, he could be a hero. He could just lie about his mental illness and keep it pushing. On the other, he had read up on the medicine, and it was very scary. Just missing one dose could fuck him up. Missing several would put him in a bad spot. Hero work or self medication. That’s what his choice boiled down to. He couldn’t pinpoint why, but one day he just decided to take the medication. It felt great. He was focusing within the hour and he wasn’t drifting off to do other things. His radio show was just the right amount of hyper without going off the rails. He felt productive. It was great. He forgot to take it the next day, and while it wigged him out, he had red he hadn’t been on it long enough for it to do anything. So, he started setting alarms for himself again, a habit that died off at some point. He couldn’t remember why he stopped. Sleep, eat, medicine, clock in, sleep. Rinse and repeat. That’s what his alarms were for. After a couple of weeks he was able to silence all of them except the one that woke him up. It was nice. Having a schedule that he could stick to. After months of being on the medicine, he finally got the courage to go and get his National Hero License. It was scary, but his friends helped him through it. The medicine didn’t help too much with his anxiety, but he wasn’t really willing to fuck with more than one medicine. So he chose to deal with the anxiety by itself. Breathing helped, knowing that getting his NHL would be the best thing ever helped. When he walked out of the building with that piece of plastic, with his two friends waiting for him, he broke down in tears. He couldn’t help it He had come so far because of them... because of him, too. The months turned to two years, and Hizashi was starting to forget who that scared little boy was that he used to be. When he wasn’t a hero, he was still a radio DJ. He found that working multiple jobs was the best thing for him. The more occupied he was, the better off he was. Eventually, he even decided to apply for a teaching position too. Just to add one more thing for him to do. The talk with Principal Nezu was a little intimidating if he was honest. The furry little creature might be small in stature, but he could command the attention of a room. Still, Hizashi laid out his concerns and his own demands. He wanted to be open about his condition if a student had those concerns as well. He never wanted someone to suffer like he had. He wanted to change the stigma. Somehow. Nezu, surprisingly, was okay with this, so long as the student was the one who approached Hizashi with the question. As Hizashi started to teach, and students actually approached him on how to deal with their ADHD, the Pro wanted to push the stigma more. He went to his agency with a hypothetical, a student wanted to know what to do. They laughed and he threatened to leave. Sure, he wasn’t All Might or Endeavor, but he was Present Mic the DJ who brought in a decent chunk of change for his celebrity status, and money talked. They agreed on doing PSAs about ADHD, but they weren’t looking to bring on a hero with the condition. It wasn’t good enough, so he left. And it was a PR nightmare for the agency. “Dear Listeners, Present Mic just became a free agent…” Was it dumb to blast the agency on air? Oh yeah. Did Shouta chew him out? Fuck yeah he did. Did Hizashi feel great? Amazing. It felt so good to do things for himself, to make his own terms. Without an agency, Hizashi started to get more bold on his radio show, creating a monthly Monday show dedicated to mental health. It had its ups and downs, some people loved it, some people hated it. The radio station’s ratings were up so his boss didn’t care one way or another, especially when people would call in to threaten or belittle Mic. Still, he kept it pushing because if he was going to be the only advocate the he was going to be the loudest advocate.

While he never out right admitted he had an illness, everyone could figure it out. The NHL had tried to strip him of his license, but with not real concrete diagnosis they had no reason to. They gave him a firm talking to, reminded him that they were not a fan of his “shenanigans.” So, Hizashi just got louder. He started selling merchandise with “Remember their names” on the front and the list of heroes that, globally, had lost their lives to untreated mental illness. The money went to advocacy groups. He was going to make sure that if the NHL did anything stupid, it would back fire on them.

His hero work was getting choked off by the NHL, he knew it was, but he was just going to keep fighting. Principal Nezu supported his fight, so did his students. He knew how Nemuri and Shouta felt. That was all that mattered. The people that mattered about him cared, and that was enough for him to keep fighting. After the merchandise came a forum, an anonymous place for people with and without quirks to discuss mental illness. At this point, his words had spread out past the hero community in Japan. He saw users from across the globe on his site and he knew he was slowly gaining traction. Slow and steady.

His twenty sixth birthday marked his two year fight for equality, and unfortunately no heroes had really spoken on it. He understood, they didn’t want to jeopardize everything, but it was still frustrating. It was a pretty standard day, outside of a little extra time spent with his best friends. Nothing out of the ordinary happened, until he got an email from All Might. He reread it at least ten times before shrieking, triggering his quirk on accident. Poor Nem and Sho, but seriously, All Might wanted to be on his radio show to talk about mental health and destigmatizing mental illness! They had to tell him to breathe in between his excited outbursts. He was feeling such a strange mix of emotions that he could feel the tears in his eyes. He wanted to be happy, but everything could go so wrong so quickly.

“I admire your tenacity, Present Mic. Everything you’ve done for Mental Health Awareness, it’s very admirable.”

Mic was speechless, but he played it cool, he had to, he was on air.

“I appreciate that, All Might! You’re the first Pro to say anything. So, seriously, I appreciate that.”

“I want to give money to the cause. I might not understand what people are going through, but I can empathize. Let me help.”

Who knew all it took was All Might opening his checkbook for the hero world to change their minds about mental health. Suddenly it was the in thing to be pro mental health. It was a blessing and a curse, but it was better than nothing. All Might helped Hizashi with getting in with some politicians to work on legislation. They worked with getting heroes, civilians, and even villains (in custody) access to whatever it was they needed. It was slow, but needed because Hizashi was not going to let another kid suffer like he did.

A year after the All Might interview, agencies were begging for him to join them. Hizashi had gone from being a smudge on the hero community to being this shining beacon. He declined them all, uninterested in dealing with people who would drop him when mental health was no longer the cool thing. He had heard that had happened when homosexuality was still something people fought for. Heroes would be used as a token, only to be dropped when being gay or queer wasn’t the in thing. No thanks, Hizashi was better off doing the independent thing. He wouldn’t go full underground like Shouta, but he certainly wasn’t going to an agency any time soon. No, he liked his odd hero jobs. Between teaching and the radio, he had just enough time to kick a couple of villain asses. He still had moments where worry crept up, that he would lose control and his illness would win, but that was all part of the fight. It was a long fight, and it was time people knew about it.

Health Insurance: Duplicate Coverage?

I have a job where my health insurance premiums as well as my spouse's are covered without cost to me. However, my wife is insurured through her work as well because she is requiried to be insured under her employers plan even though she is already covered under mine. She chose an HMO because it was the least cost to us because we would want to use my insurance (PPO) as the main provider, that way she can choose her own doctors. She recently went to the doctor using my plan, but now they will not cover the visit because of duplicate coverage. Can someone give me advice as to how I can rectify this situation. Random Woods near Mystic Falls

Parker stood behind a tree, about fifteen feet away from the tent, of a young couple. She had seen the being  disappear into the trees, right above where  the young man had been standing. She recognized him from an old picture that Zach had boxed in the basement. Parker never moved from her place behind the tree as the being  killed the young couple. It hadn't taken her long to realize that the being was a vampire, and that he was Zach's Uncle Damon. This also meant that, Stefan, was actually Uncle Stefan. Parker, wasn't so sure how she felt, about her sister having a relationship with a vampire. That was the Uncle of one of her friends. Parker closed her eyes.

Gilbert House

The next day Parker stood in the kitchen staring at the wall with a cup of coffee in her hand. Curly brown hair was pulled back into a loose ponytail, long tendrils hung into her face. Hazel eyes hooded with sleep.

Parker was pulled from her daze Jenna waved her hand in front of her inches from her face. She shook her head turning to her aunt who looked at her with a worried expression.

"How long has it been since you took your medication?" Jenna asked looking over her pale niece.

"I don't know four days maybe. Zach said my new prescription got delivered a couple days ago." Parker lied taking a long drink of her coffee and ignoring her glaring aunt.

"Parker you need to go over there and get them. You're supposed to take them every day. Aren’t they supposed to stop you from zoning out, or closing in on yourself." Jenna said scolding her like a child before she left.

"Hey Parker ready to go? Jer already left," Elena said walking in the kitchen, bag in hand.

"Yeah I’m ready to go. Could you drive? I'll feel better later in the day, I’m feeling a little off." Parker said tossing Elena her keys.

"Ok, You must not be feeling well. You only allow people to drive your car when your drunk. Let's go." Elena said looking at her sister with raised eyebrows.

Once Parker was in her office she set to work getting all of the evals from the first two days of school out and sorted on her desk. Once her day had started she gave feedback to all of the staff and explained how things were going to work with her as the counselor and basic school stuff. The rest of her day went the same just with different staff member and teens come to talk with her. By the end of the day just as Parker had said she looked a lot better than she had in morning. So Elena trusted her to drive to the grill and not fuss over her.

Mystic Grill

Parker sat at the bar for twenty minutes drinking before she decided to send a text to Zach.

'Can you get all my meds around? -Parker'

'Come on over, but be careful. Z' It didn't take more than five minutes for her to get a reply.

‘Why? Afraid I’ll get eaten? -Parker’

Parker finished her drink and paid her bill. On her way out she stopped by Bonnie and Caroline’s table to chat and  see where Elena was. They informed her that she went to Stefan’s house.  Parker told them thanks before she getting into her car and driving to the Salvatore boarding house. She pulled in and parked just as Elena was about to get into her own car.

"What are you doing here Parker? You still don't look to hot." Elena asked Parker as she got out of her car.

"Stop worrying Elliot, I came to get my meds from Zach. You know that guy that lives here, that I lived with for several year. That way you and Jenna can stop hovering over my shoulder and bothering me." Parker exclaimed walking to the door.

"Guess you'll just have to wait and see won't you, Brother?" Damon smirked to Stefan as Parker came in causing both brothers to look at her.

"Is Zach home? He said my medication came in and he had them." Parker said slowly stepping down the steps into the main room.

"He is home, I'll go find him for you." Damon said smirking before walking away to get Zach.

"Parker what are you doing here? What medication? I could have sent it with Elena for you, she was just here." Stefan said noticing his counselors pale skin for the first time that day; slowly he was moving forward to get a better look at her. Just then Zach rushed into the room.

"Parker you should’ve come over the first time I texted. Have you talked with your new doctor about changing your medication yet? You remember how these ones make you feel, and act. Just take them only when you feel like you need them; until you go and talk to your new doctor. They might be countering each other." Zach said walking up to her with Damon not far behind him with a slight look of worry having recognized her from a place unknown.

"Z-man I'm fine. No need to worry about me, I will call my doc and have a talk with them. Remember I am not a child, now I’ve gotta go. Booze to drink, people to mess with. The usual!" Parker said with a smirk causing Stefan, and Zach to frown with concerned looks. With a final wave at the three men, she waltzed out of the house.

Parker sat in her car for several moments before leaving the boarding house, once at home she sat in the car for a few more minutes before grabbing her stuff and exiting the car. Entering the house just in time to see Jeremy disappearing up stairs and out of her view, as soon as the front door was shut Jenna turned to her saying, "Please tell me that you went and got your meds from Zach?"

"Yes Jenna I got them, that doesn't mean I'm going to take them. I am 23 years old and I have the right to decide to take medication that makes me feel like a zombie or not. I haven't been taking them like I am supposed to since a week or so before mom and dad died. Dad didn't like how they had been making me act, how they made act like I was on autopilot. You and everyone else need to stop treating me as if I am child everyone must fuss over. Because they more or less just make things worse!" Parker growled watching as both aunt and sisters jaws drop, running up the stairs to her bedroom leaving her stuff before walking to Jeremy's room.

"Got any drugs that help with sleep, and pain?" Parker asking leaning in the door as her brother looked at her questioningly with his jaw dropped.

"What?" Jeremy asked looking at his sister shocked at her question.

"Drugs, you know those things you and the druggies take to get high. I want some to help replace my drugs screw up." Parker said giving him a 'duh' look.

"Ok, here is a bottle, take one before you go to sleep, just don't take more than one in a twelve hour time period." Jeremy said handing his older sister the bottle.

"Got it, thanks little bro." Parker said rubbing her temple giving him a thankful look before walking to her room and going to bed.

Salvatore Boarding House

The next day Parker walked up the steps of the boarding house in black ankle boots, a knee length black and white sundress, with her leather jacket on. By the time she got to the door it was opened to reveal Stefan Salvatore exiting the house.

"Zach home?" Parker asked, laughing a little inside when Stefan jumped a little.

"Yeah he's inside, and you look a lot better today." Stefan said before getting in his car , waving goodbye. Parker went into the house shutting the door behind her.

"Hey Zachy-poo, where you at?" Parker yelled, attempting a Jersey accent. Hearing his reply she started running throughout the house to the room he was in.

"You are looking better today. You get drunk last night?" Zach asked as he continued dusting the shelves in the main floor library.

"We need to have a little chat." Parker said sitting on the edge of one of the chairs. As she leaned forward she gestured between them.

"What about?" He asked moving some books around, putting them in the correct order.

"Oh you know, basics how you've been, how your uncle Stefan is practically dating my little sister,oh yeah how your other uncle keeps attacking people, the weather." Parker said in an offhand tone watching as Zach tensed up at her words.

"How, um... I mean, how do did you... how did you umm?" Zach said stumbling over the most basic syllables.

“Let's see remember my little gift as Ms. Sheila called it? You know the one that allows me to leave my body and show up someplace else, mostly while I’m asleep. In the last week I have watched Damon kill pretty cute couple three days ago, another couple two days ago. Oh and I also watched him attack Vicki Donovan. That is five people in the last three days I’ve seen your, Uncle Damon attack. Take a wild Guess at how many survived? One!" Parker said counting the people off on her hand as she talked, never once allowing her eyes to leave her friend.

Sighing Zach said, "Parker, I should have told you that they were in town. Or at least Stefan was, I didn’t know Damon was until after it was already to late. I'm am sorry, you have kept my family's secret. I should have told you," looking down Zach avoided her eyes.

"Deal with your uncle by the car wash, or I just might have to do it myself. I’m not sure your other Uncle would appreciate what I’d do to his brother. They may act like they hate each other, but they’re family, it’s what families do." Parker said standing and leaving without another word.

By the time Parker got to there almost everyone in town was there. Instead of joining the festivities, she went into the grill and sat at the bar ordering a drink. Not five seats away from her was none other than Damon Salvatore. He sat there calmly drinking a glass of bourbon. Doing her best to ignore everything around her, Parker downed her first drink and was immediately handed another one. They know me so well here.

"Hey aren't you Zach's friend? Came to the house other day for medication, right?" Damon asked looking over at her.

"Yeah, and your little brothers Guidance Counselor." Parker said taking a long drink from her all to small glass.

"Huh, baby bro’s girlfriend's sister is school Counselor. Is that a good or bad thing for him?" Damon asked looking at her.

"That will depend on what mood I am in, and whether he needs professional help!" Parker said with a smirk before Vicki started to recognize Damon. Listening to the conversation Parker knew exactly what Damon was planning to do. He’s going to either kill her, or force Stefan to drink blood from a human.

"Sorry, but I have to go somewhere." Damon said getting up and walking away, toward the back right where Vicki went.

For five minutes Parker sat there tapping her foot against the barstool she was sitting on. That was when she heard her siblings and their friends talking about Vicki and Jeremy. Parker rolled her eyes at the teenager's shock. Gulping down the rest of her drink; she threw down money for her tab and walked to where her siblings stood.

"Or you could talk to me," was all that Parker caught coming from her little sisters mouth as she walked up to them.

"I vote for none of the above." Jeremy said to Elena storming away.

"What the hell was that about?" Parker asked walking up to her younger sister with her 'don't lie to me, you will regret it' look.

Sitting in her car Parker leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes. Okay, if I can do that thing in my sleep, maybe I can force myself to do it. Parker relaxed. Thinking only of Vicki. She felt a slight rush, kind of like adrenaline.

Opening her eyes again, Parker found herself standing on a roof; she was ten or so feet away from Stefan, Damon, and a sobbing Vicki.

"You have two choices; feed and make her forget, or let her run screaming 'vampire' threw the town square." Damon said noticing Parker, while Stefan didn’t.

"That's what this is all about? You want to expose me?" Stefan said starting to gain his control back.

"No, I want you to remember who you are." Damon said looking at his brother.

"Why? So, what? So I'll feed? So I'll kill? So I'll remember what it's like to be brothers again?" Stefan said standing up and looking Damon in the face before adding, "You know what? Let her tell everyone that vampires have returned to Mystic Falls. Let them chain me up and let them drive a stake through my heart. Because you know what, at least I will be free of you." Parker almost clapped at Stefan's statement.

"Wow, come here sweetheart." Damon said walking to Vicki, causing Stefan to notice Parker for the first time, Parker who was smirking at him.

Parker completely ignored Damon and Vicki as she walked over to Stefan. As Damon walked back over Vicki talked not remembering a single thing. Once she was gone Parker turned to the Salvatore's.

"She's safe, I'm leaving as soon I figure out how to." Parker said trying to think while both boys looked at her.

"May I ask how you got up here? I didn’t hear the door over there open." Damon asked looking at her.

"Diana, I really don't know. Normally it only happens when I am asleep. By the way what is with you and couples in the woods? Don't worry your safe for now, I haven't told the council. I myself am not a huge fan of them either." Parker said before her eyes snapped shut without her control.

“Did she call me Diana?” Damon asked as Parker disappeared before their eyes.

At the house she slowly walked up the stairs. She heard voices, Jenna and Elena’s, coming from Jeremy's room. She stopped just outside the door, neither of the occupants saw her.

"She made everything look so easy. You know, high school, marriage, controlling Parker and her ways, Having you." Jenna sighed looking at Elena. Moving away Parker walked to her room, shut her door quietly as possible and sat at her desk. Opening a drawer she pulled out a sketchbook and a diary. The first page of the sketch was a drawing of herself and a young man, both dressed in Viking age fashion. The next page was of her, Elena and their mother. The rest of the sketch book was a mix of drawings of her in Viking Era, and 15th century times with the young man, several with another man from the 15th century and many others. Images of her with her parents and younger siblings.

"Who or what am I really? And who were they to me?" Parker whispered putting the book down and climbing into her bed and going to sleep.

Hello Yesterday, I passed my driving test and am, of course, really looking forward to driving. I spotted a Renault Clio I liked with a 1.1 litre engine. It's nothing special, just a first car (which would mean the world to me) I was always aware insurance was going to be a struggle. I insured myself with Provisional Marmalade while I was still learning, so I could drive my mum and dad's car as additional practice. Prov. Marm. have another part to their company, Young Marmalade for newly passed drivers, apparently giving you the best quotes, however I couldn't find anything under 3000! I am a 17 year old boy living in the Northeast of Scotland, one of the most common places for a collision in the whole of the UK. However, I am not in anyway a dangerous driver. My dad has been driving for 50 years and told me he feels very safe while driving with me as a learner, and I always stay within the speed limit, with the exception of if I don't realise I'm doing over the limit. My mum and dad have been saving some money for me for about 10 years, but it's only about 1300, and I don't have any more money apart from that. It's not going to be enough and I have really been let down by the insurance, because that Clio I saw was 600. The lowest quote I managed to find was 1634.70 a year from the Co-Operative Young Driver insurance, and with that you get a device fitted in your car to monitor how you drive, and if you drive within speed limits, and safely, I guess your monthly cost comes down a little bit. The Decision I Made That Will Talk to Me forever

This is a promised story I have decided to publicly tell in hopes that it is awakening for one of you reading this. I am very fortunate to have an addiction that wasn’t as fatal as many addictions can be, but I wouldn’t read this story and take it as something good. I will use the word is and has towards my addictions, because although I may not be on anything currently, I will always believe I am an addict.

This story dates a little bit. When I was 12, I broke my arm pretty severely. The bone in my wrists had to be reset twice, meaning the bones were broken twice. I broke both my ulna and my radius in one clean sweep in a skating accident, as well as 3 of the teeny tiny ones in the rotational movement, wrist part thing. I’m studying to become a brain doctor, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Basically, after my surgery I was given pain pills. I was 12 and I was given oxycodone. I remember the first night I took the pills and I had severe panic attacks all night. My mom, who was all for natural, holistic medicine, immediately made me consume a shit ton of water to flush it out of my system. I grew up with parents who had me get the bare minimum vaccinations. I have frequent migraines and my medication is basically a strong Tylenol with some sort of anti-anxiety meds that make me loopy. Basically, what I am saying, is that I was never exposed to medications of any type and my body had a pretty harsh reaction to the pain pills. Fast forward to the beginning of high school, I was straight edge. I didn’t like the use of marijuana in any instance, I thought alcohol was bad and that drug use was a choice. That summer came and a made a couple new friends. They were amazing, but then I learned they smoked every day. Everything I had thought about drugs, got replaced by this idea that maybe not all drug users were bad. I was respected for being straight edge and even prompted to keep up with it. Of course, having these friends that I had come to love and cherish made me want to try weed. When sophomore year came around I smoked my first bowl. The ashes were black by the time it was passed to me and I coughed out black smoke, gagging over the burnt rubber taste. I felt sick with myself for allowing myself to do this and told myself I would never again. The urge came back. The few moments of peace that the few hits had given me, was so soothing. I felt warm, wrapped in God’s blanket. I began smoking cigarettes and as lame as I know I sound, smoking a dab pen to hide the weed in my own house so my parents wouldn’t catch me. My lungs slowly turned to shit. I was a singer, I preformed in a national choir for about two and a half years. We would travel the world and all around the country singing. The choir was very hard to get into with a limited number of seats. It was my favorite thing to do, until I started coughing at the end of each song. I had caught mono after drinking out of a cup of a carrier. My health was absolute shit at this point and on top of that I smoked a lot to pass the time. I decided to take cough syrup one night that I couldn’t fall asleep. I had never taken cough syrup before this, never knew how it would affect me. Once again, I had never really had medication before and so the cough syrup hit me very fast. I saw Jimi Hendrix perform a concert, there were floating leprechauns in my room, I had a whole clan of penguins just chilling next to my bed. It felt like a distraction from my anxieties to watch the illusions my brain would create. I would lie there with rosy cheeks, warm with synthetic happiness. My cough didn’t get any better and neither did my habits to get high. I remember my mom taking me to a throat specialist and pretending to have a panic attack, so they couldn’t put a camera into my lungs just to find that they were black. Occasionally if I could shell out the money, I would buy prescription pain pills for an intense high on  my roughest days. My life continued to go in this downwards spiral, where I couldn’t control myself and I couldn’t breathe. It took months before I could finally say stop. I got a job where I didn’t want to be high all the time. I took the steps to get off the medicine, and my head ached for days and I couldn’t stop vomiting randomly, I had a fever for a week, but it was worth it. I hit an all time low, I felt depressed, scared. It was hard to shower and look at myself in the mirror and say look at you. My weight had dropped slightly. It wasn’t until my first day of work that I really felt ok. When the job ended, so did that natural high that came with it. I began to use my old habits again. Another couple of months, blurred from my memory. I remember being in a car one day, realizing how out of it I really was. The conversation was hard to follow, and my memories were memories I would never knew how much I would want, until there came a day that the other person involved in them would be gone. This withdrawal was probably the hardest. It was the one that I wanted to be using the most. I stopped not out of choice, but out of need. I began to mentally collapse after losing someone close to me and the drugs made it worse. It was the first time that the drugs had hurt me. Stopping was painful. I stopped cold turkey and even the thought of doing them made me sick. My body was sore for months after all the vomiting and sweating. I would miss school to stay back for a few days to flush my system. When it was all over, I felt limp, lifeless. I was a walking zombie. My life had revolved around getting high and the people I once loved, were no longer my allies. I created a new world, with clean people. I lived in a world that I wanted to live in and I was so happy. During my use, I was beginning to fail classes, before I was a straight A student. I now had the opportunity to focus. I wish this was the end of the story, but it isn’t. Freshman year came around. I had the worst breakup of my life, I had my school deny that I was sexually assaulted, my mom was sick. I began to panic. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t hold food down, I couldn’t get out of bed. I went back to the only things I knew, and that was the biggest regret of my life. I had spent over a year sober and now I was returning to things that made me, well, not me. It sent me into a frenzy. I began to act out, get angry, emotions I never had before. This was the first and only psychotic breakdown I have had. I couldn’t control any aspect of my life and it felt as though the grains of sand that I had taken me years to collect, were now slipping through my fingers. Reality wasn’t there. I got better slowly, through care and practice. The biggest moment I can remember is being slipped shrooms. I began to get paranoid. I thought the rainbow was hurting me, people were trying to steal my teeth and worst of all I thought my dead friend was out to get me. I was out in the middle of nowhere and I called my mom to come and get me. I don’t remember how I got home, the last thing I remember is being able to turn on my location tracker. We’ve never talked about it, but I know how she felt. I know she felt sad that I had to put myself through this. At this point I had developed my illness and I was severely underweight. I had lost about 25 pounds and I couldn’t hold food down. Sometimes nothing would stick for 2-3 days, and with that happening, every time I would smoke, I would just fall asleep. After awhile it became embarrassing to be with the people I was with and I knew I was a joke. I stopped smoking all together at that point, but quickly picked the cough syrup up. It wasn’t until recently where I had to tell myself to stop. I have been sober for almost a week now and I hope to God that week turns into years. I’m sick of feeling debilitated by something controlling me, sick of being 19 and stuck. I went through the vomiting, the sweats and now I’m here, making a blog. Making a blog to reflect on when I’m 40.

I want this story to stand how it is. Remember that anyone could be using any substances at any time. As a friend we need to stand by their side and get them the help they need when needed. I reiterate many times that my body is sensitive to doing substances and I am prone to vomiting when my inner balance is thrown off. I don’t want people reading this to freak out or state it wrong, because we all go through different things when it comes to our bodies. I was nervous about writing this, because this was such a private time in my life. People knew I got high, which is fairly normal, I just don’t think they understood what I meant. I have a large year of my life where I can only remember bits and pieces. To anyone that believes these substances have zero effect on you, that’s wrong. I’m not trying to sound like a mom or be a bitch, I just want people to grow up strong and healthy. To me, the occasional joint doesn’t hurt me, but the more I learn about myself, the less I want it. This is a story of warning, not just a story. Please take in to consideration other’s opinions.

I think that on some level my mother always blamed herself for my epilepsy. A lot of her theories were based on the fact that I was born a month too soon via c-section. She cites that the doctor may have pulled me out of her too aggressively or something, or perhaps he grabbed me by the neck the wrong way while I entered the world, kicking and screaming. Shortly after I was born, my lung collapsed. My mom has theorized that perhaps I went too long without oxygen and that’s why I found myself fighting a seizure disorder twelve years later. She blamed vaccinations for a while there. She also blamed braces for shifting my teeth around so drastically that I had developed a seizure disorder.

My mother blamed herself and the things she did for my seizures so naturally, she threw her entire being into fighting them.

My mom is a nurse of thirty years and has seen first hand what drugs (legal and not legal) can do to a person. She’s a pretty hard-headed and thick-skinned woman and I couldn’t do what she does on a daily basis. Growing up, her experience in the medical field seeped into our home life. Our family’s medicine cabinet was twice the size of all of my friends’ medicine cabinets and it was always filled to the brim with vitamins and medical supplies, including latex gloves, medical tape, surgical tools and she sometimes kept syringes locked in the other medicine cabinet in her bathroom. I even saw an IV drip bag up there once. I never thought this was weird but in retrospect maybe the syringes were a little bit questionable. It’s nice to know, though, that if the absolute end of time occurred while I lived with my parents, I would have a generally good chance of surviving and repopulating the earth.

With respects to drugs though, my mom was a firm believer that there’s always something natural out there that can cure minor ailments like headaches and period cramps. She liked the idea of curing things naturally rather than turning to harsh drugs to fix things. Advil and Claritin made very rare appearances in our house. Period cramps were treated with a heating pad and this weird tea she brought home from Russia once (which worked). Muscle pain required magnesium. Have a headache? Take a nap and down a litre of water. Allergies? Nettle tea and Vitamin C. Nauseous? Ginger tea. Cold and flu? My grandma used to make this mixture which was basically a full jar of liquid honey that was packed to the brim with lemon and ginger slices along with fifteen to twenty cloves of garlic. I swear one tablespoon cured you within hours.

My mom applied the same logic to my seizure disorder. Before my doctor could put me on meds (I hadn’t had enough seizures/tests done until six months after the first one for him to make a formal diagnosis allowing him to write the appropriate prescription) my mom tried what felt like every possible natural remedy on the face of the planet.

Remedy #1: Aura Cleansing

When I first got sick, I remember having a lot of appointments in a very short time frame. One of the first ones took place in a little apartment building in North York. I’m pretty sure it was an under-the-table operation because this was literally in this little Eastern European lady’s apartment and she was adamant about it being cash-only. My mom explained this appointment to me as “aura cleansing,” something that would “draw negative energy out of my me”.

The Eastern European lady had a few degrees hanging on the wall of her kitchen stating that she was certified in accounting from a local university and one in Russia. She had another certificate hanging next to the accounting degrees allowing her to practice in the field of Holistic health and healing.

I remember looking around and thinking it was a homey apartment. It vaguely resembled my grandmother’s in Poland: there were doilies on every piece of furniture and it smelled somewhat like boiled potatoes. She also had a beautiful cat, Felix, who was long and slender and spotted like a Jaguar and I loved him.

After asking my mom and I a few questions about my general health the lady lead us into a spare bedroom where she had a bookshelf, a loveseat and a massage table. My mom sat down on the loveseat and the lady turned on a radio that played ocean noises at a soft volume. I took my place on the table and the lady asked me to close my eyes and started talking me through deep-breathing exercises, which lasted an entire half-hour. I started getting restless. She then moved on to asking me to stay completely still while she hovered her hands over my entire body in steady, rhythmic motions. I remember thinking, “if the problem is in my brain, then how the hell is this going to help?”

By the end of the appointment I was primarily fixated on finding Felix again. I was relatively smart for a twelve year old. I knew this “aura cleansing” wasn’t going to help a problem in my brain. My mom paid the lady while I hung out on the floor of her foyer with the cat.

In the car my mom and I talked about how I felt about the appointment. I told her I didn’t like sitting still for so long but I didn’t complain. I knew she was just trying to help. We went back a couple more times but eventually I think my mom clued in that I didn’t like going and didn’t think these “aura cleansing” sessions weren’t helping. I continued having seizures regardless of how much this Russian accountant cleansed my aura. The appointments frequently interfered with my normal kid stuff like Girl Guides and homework and whatnot so we never went back.

Remedy #2: Biofeedback Therapy

Around the same time as the aura cleansing sessions, my mom started taking me to an ADD/Biofeedback clinic close to our house. My parents told me that these sessions would help me control my seizures, like when or if they happen and the severity of them. I didn’t fight it because it sounded fantastic in theory - if I could control them then I could theoretically never have a seizure ever again. These appointments would prove to be equally as useless as the aura cleansing. At the very least, these appointments helped me come to terms with how little control I had over my life anymore.

The first appointment was focused on teaching you proper breathing techniques and how to divert your focus to certain parts of your brain. I’m not sure of the specifics of it but it was a weirdly satisfying experience being able to direct my brain processes and I knew it was working because I could feel it. I could literally feel my brain waves diverting themselves at my control. I’ve retained the ability to do that and sometimes I divert my focus for fun.

This clinic was huge and there were individual rooms where patients would be hooked up to a machine that resembled an EEG machine. With this machine you would basically be controlling a virtual game on a computer screen with your brain waves and breathing pattern. My favourite was the roller coaster game: the roller coaster would speed along the track as long as you kept your focus and breathing rate to a certain standard. With every game you completed successfully in a  given time frame you’d be awarded points and eventually you would be able to exchange your points for prizes. It was like a Chuck-E-Cheese for kids with neurological conditions.

When I collected enough points I traded them in for a $20 gift card to Chapters. The day I won the gift card my mom and dad took me to the bookstore and I bought one of those Guinness Book of World Records books. I came across the book in my parents basement a couple weeks ago and smiled.

I wish Biofeedback Therapy worked for me. The outcome sounds like a dream. Being about to control when and where and if you have seizures sounds like a dream. However, unfortunately, they didn’t work. Seizures kept happening regardless of how hard I tried to redirect my brain waves - and believe me, I tried, but they continued.

Remedy #3: Dairy-Free and Gluten-Free Diet

Right after my diagnosis with Epilepsy my mother did a lot of internet research and came to the conclusion that dairy and gluten would be ultimately detrimental to my health. We went back to the aura-cleansing lady - who happened to also have a vast amount of knowledge about the dietary needs of epileptics - who confirmed that dairy and gluten in any form should be avoided in every way possible.

I’d never been a picky eater so this diet never really phased me in the slightest. It didn’t help with my seizures at all but living without dairy and gluten didn’t bother me. I managed to find substitutes for all of my favourite things, some things I ended up liking more than the original anyway.

This diet lasted two years. No one actually forced me to stick to it for this long; I genuinely liked the foods I was eating for those two years and I felt generally more physically healthy, but I started to miss the fun foods that I could technically no longer eat. The fact that I was getting older also didn’t help. I was going out with friends more often and we’d usually eat out or order in, and take-out dairy-free, gluten-free food wasn’t typically available anywhere at that point in time.

One night in 2011 I found myself at Laura’s house. Her mom made a Baked Alaska for her birthday. I wasn’t going to say no to a slice of birthday cake for my best friend’s birthday, so I took a big slice thinking nothing of the potential consequences of eating dairy for the first time in two years.

That night, Laura’s toilet and I spent a long night together. I’ll spare you the gruesome details. I will never put any blame on my mother for my epilepsy, however, I will credit her for the role that she played in my lactose intolerance. Remedy #4: Holistic Electro-Treatment

I’ve scoured the web and I don’t even know what to call this treatment because I can’t find any evidence of it existing, but I know it exists because it’s yet another thing my mom thought would cure me of epilepsy. So I will call it Holistic Electro-Treatment.

I started suffering from hay fever and migraines the spring before I turned seventeen. At this point I was taking medication for my seizures and had been seizure-free for almost three years. I didn’t like mixing drugs so I generally avoided taking antihistamines and pain relievers and I was open to any forms of treatment that would make the itching inside my face go away.

My mom had a friend at work who suggested this treatment that consisted of strategically placed electric currents running through your body that would treat allergies and epilepsy and various other ailments, including my newfound lactose intolerance. This treatment also sounded incredible because it was kind of an all-in-one type deal, but it didn’t work.

My first appointment was with this lady in the basement of an office complex. My mom came with me and sat as I sat on a table and the therapist-lady showed me the pen-shaped device that would omit the slightest current of electricity. She ran through a series of basic questions about my medical history, and then asked if I had any body piercings, as the metal could interfere with the electric currents.

My mom was old-fashioned, and that's why I hadn’t told her about the time I got my navel pierced. She was so incredibly against any body modifications. When I was fifteen I dragged Genn to some sketchy basement apartment where a little non-English speaking woman did tattoos and piercings. I was on a mission to get my nose pierced. Now, the legal age to get such a piercing without parental permission was sixteen, so I was under age, but I was referred there by an acquaintance from school who said that this place doesn’t ID kids who come through there. I was nervous as I was filling out the form with a fake name and age, but I was determined. She pulled a tiny needle out of a sterile package and  pushed it through my nose, and with that I had my first facial piercing. I showed up back at home around 7pm that night and did everything I could to avoid my parents, but they had to see me eventually, right? I eventually ventured upstairs, holding my head down until they eventually noticed the sparkly rhinestone stud sticking out of my face. They were - within their rights - pissed about it. To my surprise, my dad was more pissed than my mom, who later approached me and told me she liked the facial piercing, saying that it was “cute”. My dad hated it and I think he was more pissed that I went out of my way to go somewhere that was probably unsafe to get a foreign lady who ran an illegal operation in her basement to “hole punch my face”, as he so lovingly put it. Not even twenty four hours later he paid me double the cost of the piercing itself to take it out (I was a relentlessly stubborn kid), followed by him driving me to our local LifeLabs to get my blood and urine tested for diseases. Everything came back negative, for the record.

My next piercing after that was a navel piercing that I had done (when I was legal to) at a local tattoo/piercing shop. That was easier to hide, so when my mom took me to this electro-therapy session and the therapist asked me about any piercings I was nervous. I told her no, thinking “why the hell would this woman want to see my belly button,” when she pulled out the electric-pen-type device and tried to start the session. It turns out that (and I could be wrong because I don’t know the specifics of the treatment), when you stimulate certain points on the body with slight electric currents you can normalize the functions that those nerve endings control and the belly button is one of those points that would help with either my allergies, seizures or lactose intolerance. Before she could even touch me with her electric pen, I told her I had to pee and I went to the bathroom to take out the belly ring.  I hoped to God that the appointment would be short enough for me to shove it back in without it closing over or scabbing up. I went back to the table and laid down so the therapist could work her magic with her electric pen. She eventually got to my belly button and saw the very obvious hole in my abdomen and asked me about it. My heart was pounding because I didn’t want my mother hearing about this but I think she was on her phone and fortunately didn’t hear. I told the therapist I had the piercing done recently but took it out soon after. She shrugged it off and continued working. When it was over I went to the bathroom again to put it back in. It slid in without a problem and I left her office after a consultation about my dietary habits and little changes I could make to help with hay fever.

I went back several times because I noticed that the hay fever slowly went away and my digestive system could tolerate moderate amounts of lactose again, which I was happy about. I was able to rediscover my love for half and half in coffee and cheese on sandwiches. I eventually stopped going around August because it got expensive and it got hard to make appointments that I could keep. I was a busy sixteen year old, I guess.

My digestive system’s aversion to lactose eventually came back and I found that my hay fever also came back the following September when the ragweed came out. I can’t say with any level of certainty that it helped with my seizures because I hadn’t had any when this treatment started but I had a couple in January following the treatment’s end in August.

Remedy #5 Ancient Chinese Medicine

In 2009, my parents took me to see a Traditional Chinese Herbalist. I was probably thirteen at the time and we packed up the car and drove up town to North York. I was mad that I was missing the first half of a get-together Genn was hosting for what would turn out to be another disappointing attempt to stop my seizures. I wasn’t on my meds at this point so my mom was adamant that we give this doctor a shot.

I don’t remember much about the appointment itself except for the doctor asking us about my medical history and concluding that I was to be given a potent concoction of various herbs once a week, many of which looked like bark pulled fresh from a tree. The doctor gave us five individually packaged baggies of dried herbs and plants and whatnot and explained to my mom that each package was to be put into a big pot and covered with six cups of boiling water and simmered until only one cup of liquid remained.

I was to drink this potion once a week. So every Saturday morning for five weeks straight I awoke to the smell of what can only be described as the damp remnants of a cedar tree forest fire, charcoal, gasoline and sadness.

Now, like I mentioned before, I’m not a picky eater. I never have been. When I was fifteen I ate a nice, warm spoonful of unseasoned lamb brain and washed it down with tepid beer. However, this traditional herbal medicine-based liquid was something I couldn’t stomach. The fact that I had doubts about it working didn’t help it go down either. Every gulp felt like a hopeless effort into stopping something in my brain that was virtually uncontrollable. However I carried on. At the very least, I told myself I would try.

I got through five weeks of treatment before deciding I had enough. I had a seizure on May 22nd of that year after five rounds of this traditional Chinese medicine and declined another appointment with the herbalist. Actually, thirteen year old me threw a fit and my parents didn’t bother fighting back.

I think my mom thought she was doing more good than harm, and realistically there was no harm done, but the more “remedies” for my seizures that my mother tried, the more exhausted I felt. Over time I started resenting her for putting me through the wringer: I felt smothered and tired and I wanted all of her tactics to stop. I was at peace with the idea of dealing with infrequent seizures without the aid of medical intervention.

Eventually she toned it down. When I got headaches or had seizures she was loving and attentive and as I got older I felt less smothered and suppressed by her constant worrying. I’ve since moved out and I only see my parents every other weekend, but I still get a text at 7:30 in the morning and in the evening every day reminding me about my meds. For that I’m thankful: I would forget most days because I’m a little absent-minded in the morning and usually just shut my alarm off and immediately forget about taking my meds.

I always made it clear to her, though, that I love her and I never blamed her for my epilepsy at all. I never understood the guilt she carried until I got older. I don’t currently have kids but I can’t imagine watching your child suffer and not be able to fight the battle for them. She still comes to appointments with me, and it hurts my heart to still see the guilt in her eyes, even though she isn’t as expressive about it anymore. These days, she just looks tired.

Everything, Everything (2017) Movie Review

MOVIE REVIEW

Maddy Whittier is almost 18.

But she’s never been outside.

Well, not that she can remember, anyway. The last time she breathed unfiltered outside air, she was a very sick infant.

Maddy tells us that she’s got a rare, potentially fatal condition known as SCID: Severe Combined Immunodeficiency. Her immune system is basically nonexistent. Which means the house where she lives with her diligent, vigilant, competent mother—who’s a medical doctor herself—is hermetically sealed from the outside world. The front door is a sci-fi style air lock. Maddy’s clothes—all white, as if symbolizing the sterilized world she lives in—are irradiated with ultraviolent light to sterilize them.

Maddy’s assessment of her isolated life? “I feel like an astronaut trapped in space,” she says. “Every day is exactly the same.”

And so it is: surfing the internet, reading, exercising, talking with her kind nurse of 15 years, Carla. It’s not that Maddy’s life is bad, per se. It’s just that the outside world she dreams of experiencing is forever off limits to her.

It’s an existence Maddy’s mostly made peace with. Until, that is, the day heshows up.

Olly Bright is Maddy’s new next door neighbor. And as fate would have it, Olly’s bedroom window is right across from hers—essentially making it impossible for the pair of dangerously curious teens to ignore each other.

Olly writes his cell phone number on his window. Texting ensues. And sharing. Lots of sharing. Favorites (book, word, color, vice, person). Stories (she’s sick and her dad and brother died in a car accident after she was born; his dad can’t ever keep a job long). And, of course, feelings: “You’re beautiful,” Olly soon tells her.

Uh oh.

Maddy and Olly’s budding relationship takes a quantum leap forward when Maddy coaxes Carla into letting the boy into the house to actually talk to her. They’ll have to stay on opposite sides of the room, of course. But at least they can have a real face-to-face conversation.

Maddy promises she’ll be good.

But we all know that lovestruck teens aren’t always reliable when it comes to keeping promises. Especially when they reach the risky conclusion that experiencing life, even if only for a brief time, is more important than actually staying alive.

POSITIVE ELEMENTS

To his credit, Olly is never the one pushing to get closer, physically speaking, to Maddy. He’s respectful and concerned, and even when Maddy decides to kiss him, Olly’s hesitant and unsure whether it’s OK.

In some ways, Pauline is a conscientious, caring and sacrificial parent in her tenacious attempts to protect her daughter from anything that could make her sick.

SPIRITUAL CONTENT

Maddy says, “The universe took my dad and brother from my mom.”

SEXUAL CONTENT

Maddy wears form-fitting tops—T-shirts, tank tops, camisoles—for virtually the entire movie. We also see her in a cleavage-revealing swimming suit.

Maddy and Olly eventually close all that distance between them, kissing passionately a number of times. At Maddy’s plotting instigation, they head off to Hawaii together on what feels in many ways like an idyllic honeymoon … except, of course, that they’re unmarried teens. They share a day swimming, cuddling and kissing in the ocean, and return to the bungalow they’ve booked.

Olly seems awkwardly willing to sleep on “his side of the bed,” and, to his credit, doesn’t immediately press for more physical intimacy. But when Maddy lifts her hair to reveal the zipper on her dress, it’s a clear indicator that she’s willing to “share” the bed. Accordingly, we see Olly unzip Maddy’s dress, followed by close-ups of the couple’s ecstatic embrace in bed (bare shoulders are seen) which make it clear that they’re consummating their relationship.

VIOLENT CONTENT

Olly and his father have a volatile relationship. In one scene, they trade blows to the face with their fists, prompting Maddy to run outside to see if Olly’s OK.

CRUDE OR PROFANE LANGUAGE

We hear one use each of the s-word and “h—.” God’s name is misused once.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL CONTENT

At one point early on, Olly sits on his bedroom window pane with what looks to be an alcoholic beverage and an unnamed plastic bottle of prescription medication.

OTHER NEGATIVE ELEMENTS

Maddy lies repeatedly to her mother, hiding her relationship with Olly. Carla participates in the cover-up as well—earning her termination when Maddy’s mom eventually figures out what’s been going on.

Pauline forbids Maddy from ever seeing Olly again, re-emphasizing that doing so could cost Maddy her life. Maddy, however, decides the risk is worth it. So much so that she gets a credit card online, books tickets to Hawaii for her and Olly, and lies to him about being in remission to get him to say yes to going there with her.

That said, the biggest deception in the film isn’t Maddy’s. The teen ends up sick and hospitalized in Hawaii before her mom brings her home. A follow-up conversation between Maddy and her doctor from Hawaii reveals that Maddy doesn’t have SCID, a fact that Maddy confirms by rifling through the records her mother has carefully kept.

Maddy then angrily confronts her mother regarding the deception, and her mom tries to justify it by describing how scared she was to lose Maddy (who, admittedly, was very sick as a baby) after already losing her husband and son. Though the film ends with the suggestion that Maddy might one day forgive Pauline for depriving her of her entire childhood because of her mom’s obsessive, selfish fears, that reconciliation doesn’t happen by the time the credits roll.

CONCLUSION

Maddy Whittier’s sad, sick plight is a deeply sympathetic one. After all, what viewer wouldn’t adore a spunky, beautiful, curious, intelligent teen who simply wants a taste of what the world’s all about?

But therein lies the root of this film’s substantial philosophical problem: Everything, Everything invites us to root for and to romanticize a teen’s decision to potentially risk her life for a taste of freedom. And that particular taste involves a lot more than just, say, venturing down to the beach in Southern California where she lives. Instead, Maddy clandestinely obtains a credit card, buys tickets to Hawaii and jets off with the boy next door who soon becomes her lover.

And the problems don’t stop there. The film further rationalizes Maddy’s potentially disastrous choices by suggesting that apart from her rebellious risk—and rebellious, romantic or not, is exactly what it is—she never would have learned that her supposed condition was actually the imaginative concoction of her obsessive, overprotective mother. So not only are there no negative consequences for Maddy’s risky choices, she’s rewarded for them.

There might, ironically, be a good cautionary message here for anxiety-riddled helicopter parents. But as a parent myself, I couldn’t help but feel aghast at the way Everything, Everything glorifies an admittedly adorable teen girl’s increasingly reckless choices.
