But, the invention of overdrive transmissions proved to be a game-changer. 4L80E Transmission was one of the heavy-duty series by General Motors designed for longitudinal configurations produced in 1991. This system allows for a car to run deep rear gears for tire-smoking or wheel hanging launches, thus, adding a semblance of highway cruising ability. This feature is one of the most vital reasons behind the popularity of 4L80E Transmission Rebuild Kits among horsepower fanatics.

Distinguishing Between 4L80E and TH400

Prior to the 1990s, the turbo- hydramatic, developed and produced by General Motors, was in use for a wide range of cars from GM and several other brands of automobiles. The additional electronic control and overdrive facility adds an extra weight of 50 pounds. However, this doesn’t affect the functionality of the system in any way. Apart from this, the extra weight adds to the length (4 inches) with the trans mount located 112 inches rearward.

All in all, the improved transmission system is better and stronger than the original with a minimum improvement of 25 perfect on the overdrive.

Chevrolet’s other W Engine, the 348

We wholeheartedly agreed with the Beach Boys back when they sang “She’s real fine, my 409,” but today we’re singing a slightly different tune. With apologies to the guys in the band, we’re singing “She’s real great, my 348.”

When we decided to build a W-motor for an upcoming project, it didn’t take long to find that original 409s and engines based on reproduction blocks and components are much too expensive for our build budget. On the other hand, 348s are plentiful and much more affordable, which means more of that budget can be allotted to performance parts.

Although it’s a common belief that the 348/409 engines were called W-motors due to the shape of their valve covers, it was actually because of an SAE paper written by Chevrolet engineers John T. Rausch, Howard H. Kehrl, and Donald H. McPherson. Chevrolet needed a larger displacement engine for increasingly heavy cars, as well as light- and medium-duty trucks, so at least three new engines were being developed. They were given the code names: W, X, and Y. The X and Y engines were small-block based, the W used a new block and heads that allowed for more displacement. Ultimately the W design was chosen for production and the letter designation stuck.

Like its small-block predecessors, the W engines use tubular pushrods that deliver oil to the stud-mounted, stamped-steel rockers. But unlike the small-block that delivers oil from a gallery down through the cam bearings to the main bearings, the W-blocks have a gallery running low in the left side of the block to feed the mains directly (additional passages feed the lifters and cam bearings). But, what really sets the W-series apart from the small-block is the combustion chamber design. Small-block heads have conventional combustion chambers with the block’s decks at 90 degrees to the crankshaft centerline. The heads for the W engines are flat with no combustion chamber (some trucks and marine heads have small chambers to lower compression) and the decks of the block are at 74 degrees to the crankshaft centerline. The result is 16-degree wedge-shaped combustion chambers in the cylinders between the top of the piston and the heads. This design creates turbulence in the chamber (or cylinder, if you will), and coupled with the location of the spark plug, a fast-moving flame front is created that helps to produce lots of low-end torque that is resistant to detonation.

First appearing in 1958, the 348 was available through 1961 in cars and 1964 in trucks. It had a bore of 4.125 inches and a stroke of 3.25 inches and was offered in an assortment of horsepower ratings. The base engine was dubbed the Turbo-Thrust and was rated at 250 hp. The optional Super Turbo-Thrust with three two-barrel carburetors was rated at 280 hp. The Police Special with a single four-barrel was rated at 315 hp. Very late in 1958 came the Special Turbo-Thrust with a single four-barrel rated at 305 horses with 11.0:1 compression and 320 hp with 11.25:1 compression. For 1959 and 1960, horsepower for the high-compression engines rose to 320 for the Carter AFB-equipped four-barrel version, and 345 in the three-deuce edition. In 1961, horsepower was bumped to 340 with a single four-barrel, and 350 with Tri-power (the highest rating the 348 would achieve). By then the 409 had eclipsed the 348 in horsepower; of course it wasn’t long before the 396 would replace them both.

When we began shopping for a W engine for an upcoming project we found rebuilt 348s for roughly half the price of most 409s and rebuildable cores were about two-thirds less. Our 348 was a real bargain as it came to us for next to nothing, thanks to a good friend who wanted an LS rather than a vintage W. According to the original owner the engine is a 1960 version of the 280 Super Turbo-Thrust and was originally equipped with triple carbs. Unfortunately, the intake manifold and carbs had been swapped in favor of a single Rochester four-barrel carburetor and manifold, but other than that the engine was intact and running.

To handle building our 348 we turned to John Beck of John Beck Racing Engines. A Bonneville racer and record holder, master engine builder, and all-around good guy, Beck builds first-class engines for any application, from racing on land or water to daily drivers. He has collaborated with us on project engines from Flatheads to monster stroker motors and everything in between. And he loves building “stealth” engines that look like mild-mannered stockers on the outside but are killer strokers on the inside.

The first step in rejuvenating our engine was to tear it down and inspect all the components. Beck would treat the block to his usual procedure of blueprinting all dimensions and boring it 0.030-inch oversize. Surprisingly, the crankshaft was in remarkable condition and only required polishing of the journals and balancing to accommodate the new pistons and rods. On that subject, if these engines had a weak spot it was the rods. We opted for a set of Scat 6.385-inch H-beam replacements with 7/16 ARP cap screws (stock 348 rods are 6.135 inches long; 409 rods are 6.00). The longer rods allowed us to use Ross pistons from 409 guru Jack Gibbs with shorter compression heights (the distance from the top of the piston to the wrist pin), which makes them lighter.

For top-end components we turned to industry leader Edelbrock. We selected Power Package Top End Kit for 409s (PN 2039). It includes Performer RPM aluminum heads, roller lifters and camshaft, timing set, intake manifold, gaskets, and fasteners. The camshaft included in the Power Package has a duration at 0.050-inch lift of 230 degrees on the intake and 234 on the exhaust; lobe separation is 112 degrees and lift at the valves is 0.616 inch on the intakes and 0.628 on the exhausts. It’s those last specs that make this kit 409 specific, as in most cases 348s won’t accommodate a camshaft with that much lift. It’s always advisable on any engine to check valve clearances with a piston at top dead center and the valves at maximum lift, and an absolute necessity when running this big of a cam in a 348. In our case the exhaust valve clearance notches in the block and the Ross pistons suggested by Gibbs provided the clearance necessary. Edelbrock pushrods and aluminum 1.7:1 full roller rockers complete the valvetrain.

From the factory our 348 had rather small intake and exhaust valves that measured 1.94/1.65 inches, respectively. The ports were small, and the rocker studs were pressed in place. Those shortcomings, plus the expense of refurbishing them and opening up the ports, were just some of the reasons we elected to swap the cast-iron heads for the much-lighter T356 aluminum versions from Edelbrock (at 31-1/2 pounds they weigh roughly half of the original cast-iron heads).

While the Performer RPM heads are similar to the best Chevrolet offered on the 425-horse 409, Edelbrock took that basic configuration and improved upon them by redesigning the ports that work with valves measuring 2.19 inches on the intake and 1.72 on the exhaust. To ensure reliability and rocker arm stability during high-RPM operation, 7/16-inch screw-in studs (as opposed the pressed in and pinned originals) are used. While all those features and the substantial weight savings are reason enough to go with these heads, their real strength are the out-of-the-box flow numbers. Thanks to the 220cc intake and 90 exhaust ports these heads will handle 277 cfm on the intake and 221 on the exhaust.

With our 348 in Beck’s capable hands, we followed along as the machinework and initial assembly took place. Next time we’ll finish assembly then strap our W to the dyno for testing and tuning.

Clues to Identifying W Engines

Other than checking casting numbers on the rear of the block an obvious clue to identify one W from another is the location of the dipstick—348s are on the left, 409s are on the right. Keep in mind pans interchange so this may not be the most accurate means of identification.

Another indication is the shape of the crankshaft flange. Both engines use forged cranks, however the 348 has a round flange while the 409 is D shaped.

John Beck primes the oil system of our 348—and yes, we painted the Edelbrock aluminum heads Chevrolet orange.

Chevy’s W engines are easily identified by the scallops along the lower edge of the rocker cover sealing surface. Note the original stamped steel rocker arms.

True to form Beck made sure our block was “square with the world” by checking the main bore alignment as other critical measurements are taken from its centerline. When corrections are necessary a light honing usually does the trick.

With the crankshaft centerline verified the block’s decks are checked to ensure they are parallel with the main bearing bores.

To make the decks parallel, perfectly flat, and equal distances from the crankshaft, Beck took a small cut off each surface.

Our block was bored 0.030-inch oversize. Thanks to sophisticated equipment, when the cylinders are bored they can be “repositioned,” if necessary, to make them 90 degrees to the crankshaft.

After the block was bored it was honed for moly rings. Note the notch in the cylinders for exhaust valve clearance and the angle of the head surface in relation to the finished bore.

W-blocks have two-bolt mains (most aftermarket aluminum blocks have four) so we added ARP studs for additional bottom-end security.

Our crankshaft was in remarkable condition, only requiring polishing of the journals and balancing.

An advisable update to any W-engine is replacing the original rods with a set of Scat H-beams. They come with ARP cap screws and full floating piston pin bushings. Note the valve reliefs in the pistons from Jack Gibbs.

Beck prefers to use Fel-Pro performance rear main seals. Main and rod bearings are from Sealed Power.

While we stuck with the stock 3.25-inch stroke, Beck regularly builds strokers up to 434 ci.

Unique features of the rear main bearing caps are the “wings” that seal the cap to the block.

To achieve the proper torque specs, ARP provides lubricant to be used on all their fasteners.

Included in the Edelbrock Power Package kit is a timing chain and sprocket kit. The crank sprocket has keyways that allow the cam to be installed “straight up” or retarded or advanced 4 degrees.

A critical measurement is ring endgap. While some engine builders like them as tight as possible, Beck warns that butted gaps are a frequent cause of piston failure and goes to the wide end of the suggest range.

To retain the full floating piston pins spiral locks are used. It takes some practice to install them, but they’ll never come out accidently.

With the pistons and rods installed Beck brought the number one piston to exactly top dead center before installing the cam. Piston to deck clearance was 0.035 inch.

Edelbrock’s roller lifter camshaft is a steel billet—note how smooth it is between the lobes; cast cams will be rough in those areas.

Degreeing the camshaft is part of precision engine assembly. The Edelbrock cam was installed “straight up,” which is not advanced or retarded.

To secure the pickup to the oil pump Beck drills and taps the bottom cover and installs a small setscrew (arrow).

Here the valve clearance pockets in the pistons and the shape of the domes are visible. The head gaskets are part of the Edelbrock Power Package Kit.

The Edelbrock aluminum heads knock roughly 60 pounds off a W engine. They breathe better than the best Chevy design and they’re pretty to boot.

To check valve to piston and block clearances and retainer to valveguide clearances, Beck temporarily replaced the Edelbrock springs with light substitutes. It was determined all clearances were more than adequate.

Edelbrock supplied new head bolts and washers. Always install the washers with the taper toward the head of the bolt to clear the underhead radius.

Along with a host of revisions to the ports Edelbrock repositioned the rocker arm studs and added guideplates It should be noted that on 1958 348 engines modifications to Edelbrock’s cylinder heads are required (water passages those blocks don’t have are plugged—contact the Edelbrock tech department for detailed information).

To control end play of the roller camshaft, Beck installed a “button” in the cam sprocket that will contact the inside of the timing cover.

Edelbrock’s roller lifters eliminate the issues that have become associated with flat tappets, particularly during the break-in period. Note the tie bar the connects the lifters in pairs and keeps them aligned with the cam lobes.

A stock 348 intake manifold won’t cover the large ports of these heads—an Edelbrock 350-5409 (dual quad), 350-7159 (single quad), or a stock large port 409 intake manifold is required.

Topping off the valvetrain is a set of Edelbrock aluminum 1.7:1 rocker arms. They’re almost too pretty to cover up.

-Pontiac

Pontiac is what I started with and have grown to love due to it being different. Building these types of engines is very different from that of a Chevy or a Ford.

-301 this guy right here was Pontiacs last big block before gm phased them out of production in the muscle car world, it's not very performance oriented and instead makes a great conversation piece or historical vault within your engine bay. If looking for big power turn elsewhere.

-400 Now where talkin'. When building a Pontiac engine it is crucial to understand that they were not meant to be high rpm screamers(obviously they can be made to be) instead they highlight torque which is that oh shit feeling you get when you floor it from a stop light.

achieving greater torque is done by increasing stroke. This is known as "stroking" an engine. Effectively you are making it larger so that it can incorporate more air and fuel which is the basis for more performance. I personally favor Eagle stroker kits because they supply everything needed for bottom end, and they increase the displacement all the way up to 512 cubic inches with smaller kits inbetween. The camshaft of choice for large displacement Pontiac engines is the summit 2802 (best for 455 inches and up, anything under use the summit 2801 cam). With this combination, the car will haul ass the second your foot touches the pedal. One thing that you'll have to think about your use for the engine. With stock heads, it will run out of power at about 5500 rpm because they don't flow very well. You can either port them yourself(more on this if you ask) or purchase new aluminum heads.

455

The 455 is built in a similar fashion to the 400 and will yield similar results so there is no reason to write more under this.

-Oldsmobile

The only v8 engines that are worth talking about are the 442, 403, and 455. The basic principle is that if you throw enough money at it you'll go fast. This is due to the fact that the blocks are not built very strong and will require altering such as cement filling or sleeves if you are seeking high compression. Performance parts are expensive because of the limited availability of Olds engines. If someone is looking to build a bracket car or dragster out of an olds I can always write more if you pm me.

This might be the most popular engine of all time, and for good reason. 500 horsepower is a simple feat and at an affordable price too. Summit makes a kit that includes components such as heads, cam, and rockers that will allow you to hit that number for right around $2000. Many things can be done with these engines but it seems that they favor a higher rpm build. As always you can stroke them to a 383 to achieve more low-end power. Roller cams shine particularly well in this type of build. There are a lot of routes you can take and I love every single one of them. If any of you guys ever have a crazy idea or even a simple one pm me and we can put something together.

-454 The big boy in the Chevy world (in relative terms cause chevy makes a damn 572 crate engine).

Make people will simply throw a cam in these guys to wake them up which is more than enough for many. Raising compression also allows for a more aggressive roar. 10.1-11 is the highest I would go for street ability. 600hp is an easy goal for these grunts.

-LS Family

Ignore the LS1 but anything else is good to go. I personally favor the LQ9 due to its ability to handle higher power than the aluminum blocks.

The way you build an ls is through 3 paths. One is displacement the other is high rpm, and the 3rd is through forced induction. Displacement has already been beaten to death in this write up so pm me if something is unclear.

High rpm: Decrease stroke to make the engine 4.9 L and then get higher compression pistons and better flowing heads. (this is dumbed down a ton but it's a simple recipe)

Forced Induction: If you've ever heard of those 1000 LS engines, well this is how they do it. Decrease stroke to 4.9, get forged pushrods (you can get forged everything but it isn't mandatory) and strap on the turbo of your choice. Please be advised that anything higher 900 hp will sacrifice some dependability.

Ford engines are in the same field as Pontiac and are kinda expensive to build the older ones like the 390 up to the 460. They can handle large power but I am not exactly sure how that achieved. I'll research more and get back with some info.

Coyote engines are where it's at if you want performance. Some have been pushed to 1100 hp on stock internals with forced induction.

-Dodge The Hemi is so rare that I prefer to leave these guys stock, I'm sorry if this offends anyone but it's what I think due to its personal connection with me.(always willing to help though)

Suspension

This will be focused on drag racing so bear with me.

Front suspension: I would personally run 90-10 due to it being the best ratio for weight transfer to the back tires

Rear Suspension: Slapper bars are the way to go because leaf spring love to flex during launches. What they do is basically put a stopper on the springs that restrict their flow of motion.

Frame: No matter what type of car you have look into subframe connectors. They help stabalize everything and help prevent the body from twisting. Fbodies are notorious for this but its always a good precaution.

Transmissions

I'm familiar with the Turbo 400 and Turbo 350. Both are stellar transmissions that can be made to perform well. A shift kit is a good start but you should either spring for a performance built tranny or rebuild it yourself with a performance rebuild kit. different kits are available depending on your power levels. Here comes an interesting argument when bracket racing, is a 2-speed transmission better than a 3 because you only have to do one shift? It helps eliminate user error with miss shifts and wrong rpm shifts. If you want to drive these guys on the streets then there is a gear vendors unit that incorporates an auxiliary overdrive so that you can cruise at under 2000 rpm for highway purposes.

The quickest and fastest 4.6L-powered Terminator on the planet…and probably the cleanest too

For over a century, mining has been an economic cornerstone of Montana; in fact, the state motto, Oro y Plata is Spanish for gold and silver, which refers to two of the precious minerals that gave rise to the state’s’ nickname, The Treasure State.

But we’d argue Montana has been hiding an even greater treasure; a serpent as midnight as obsidian with a heart of silver. Rumor has it the serpent’s onyx coat is so dark and so mesmerizing that countless men have been lost in their reflection—it’s so intriguing you can’t help but stare, but look too long and you too could fall victim.

Montana is known for big skies and open spaces, not wicked-fast cars, but this 2003 Cobra isn’t just putting the Treasure State on the map, it’s rewriting the recipe for success in the 8.5-small tire shootout classes—no big block and no nitrous? No problem.

So clean, yet so mean; you wouldn’t know it, but this 10th Anniversary Cobra makes north of 1,200hp and has been a best of 4.73 at 154 in the eighth-mile.

Once things got serious, an Enterprise Motorsports custom parachute mount and a Stroud parachute were added to slow things down in a hurry.

Never heard of the Midnight Monster from Montana, you soon will…because to the best of our knowledge, this is the quickest 4.6L powered Terminator Cobra on the planet; oh yeah, and it set those records on a small tire, too.

“When the owner, Jack Sucilsky approached us about building a reliable 9-second drag car, we had no idea it would end up where it is today, I just knew whatever state it ended in, it had to be done the AED way,” co-owner of AED and builder of this Cobra, Drew Wallace laughingly said.

In case you were wondering what the AED way is, it’s all-out speed wrapped in understated excellence.

This is the type of car you can’t take your eyes off of. It’s drop dead gorgeous, magnetic and sinister, all in one. You can’t help but stare, but it’s more than lust, deep down you’re scared to look away for fear it might strike—just ask those who’ve lined up against the silent assassin at small-tire events. Look too long and it’s gone!

“People don’t know how to take it, I mean, it has power windows, carpet, stock bodywork, it’s quiet, and the factory paint looks nearly new,” Drew said. In fact, with the hood popped some don’t even know what they’re staring at. “We’ve had people ask us if it’s a Hemi, if it’s something exotic or even something from an import…in reality, it’s just a little 4.6,” Drew said with a smile.

To know the owner, Jack, and the builder, Drew, is to know perfection. Neither would admit it, but their commitment to perfection has no ends, and even in its current state, they’re still searching for more. But before we can look forward, we must take inventory of how we got here; from a bolt-on, auto-swapped 10th Anniversary Cobra that rolled into AED back in 2010 to its currently sinister status.

“Jack wanted something that ran reliable 9s, and after ditching the IRS, adding a TH400 and tuning the positive displacement blower setup, I only drove it to the end of the parking lot before Jack called and said it wasn’t going to be enough, we needed more,” Drew said.

And like that, the hunt for serious e.t.’s was on, which started with a new bullet from Accufab Racing. Rather than go with a bigger 5.4 or 5.8-based motor, they decided to stick with stock displacement and instead, focused on efficiency.

“We decided to have the heads ported by Livernois Motorsports and paired those with custom-spec Accufab Racing cams, which were then mounted to a stout bottom-end from Accufab Racing with Billet I-beam rods and JE pistons,” Drew explained.

In keeping with max efficiency, they kept the compression up (10:1) and partnered the wicked motor with a 76mm Precision turbo, a Hogan Racing intake manifold, Accufab 90mm throttle-body and a custom AED turbo kit with a laid-down FMIC all crafted by AED. An ATI damper and a Meziere electric waterpump were added, as was the F.A.S.T. XFI standalone system all under the notion of harnessing all that power.

Since the Cobra was still a street car and drivability was nearly as important as outright performance, they kept pleasantries like the power windows, hydroboost, and basically everything but the A/C. They also added a Powerglide transmission with a 5,600 rpm stall and a Gear Vendors overdrive for solid launches and tranquil highway cruising—the setup was good for a best of 5.23 at 141 mph on 275 radials.

Behold, 4.6L of fury! In the land of small-tire racing, mod motors are scarce, but thanks to extreme efficiency and over 1,000 horsepower, this four-valve is holds its own.

The turbo kit was fabricated by Drew Wallace at AED and is anchored around an 88mm Garrett GTX turbo that feeds the 10:1 4.6L mod motor built by John Mihovetz.

As you know, horsepower isn’t the only thing that gets you down the track in a hurry, which is why the midnight monster may look composed up top, but it’s got a lot going on beneath the surface, including a Strange third member with 3.70 gears, Strange 35-spline axles, ⅝-inch titanium studs with billet lugs, Enterprise Motorsports custom housing and upper control arms, Chris Alston’s Chassisworks lower control arms and anti-roll bar, along with Santhuff coilovers.

Up front is a Racecraft chromoly K-member and A-arms, custom AED mid plate, and AFCO coilovers to help keep everything buttoned down. Let us not forget the wicked Lamb Components drag brakes hiding under the Bogart wheels that roll on ceramic bearings. Other go-fast necessities included a Racecraft rear wing, a custom Enterprise Motorsports cage and rear parachute mount with its Stroud parachute, the Kirkey race seat, Stroud harnesses, Racecraft steering wheel on the factory column that’s mated to a Racecraft tubular steering shaft and rack.

“The first turbo setup did really well, but after maxing out the 76mm and the injectors, instead of dialing it back and just having fun at events, we got the genius idea to rebuild it, and run in the Outlaw 8.5 class at the Super Nationals in Las Vegas…who’s idea was it again to make more power on a smaller tire,” Drew laughingly said.

As you already know, making the jump to the small tire class and pushing even more power through a setup with even more limitations isn’t exactly easy, but in proper AED fashion, they set out with an eye for efficiency.

“We ditched the air-to-air intercooler for an air-to-water setup for better weight distribution and cooling, and we rebuilt the turbo setup around a bigger 88mm Garrett GTX turbo so that the turbo was mounted up front, the exhaust poked through the fenders, and so you wouldn’t see very much piping under the hood,” Drew said. He’s right, look at that bay and tell us where the charge pipes are?

Along with the bigger snail and new turbo setup, some other go-fast bits joined the party too; like reversing the direction of Hogan intake, and a custom laid-down radiator (more on that later).

Like most builds, they thrashed to the very end before making the drive to the Super Nationals in Vegas with only hours to spare, arriving at the track without any testing under their belts and very little sleep. In the end, despite the odds, they unknowingly built a contender out of the little 4.6 that could.

“We arrived at the track only having idled the car into the trailer, we weren’t even sure if the 88mm turbo was even going to spool at the line with only a 4.6 and no nitrous assist,” Drew said.

The Cobra had never been on the dyno or even scaled; they did that and made test-hits in the TNT lanes in order to check the tune before going rounds. What they found was a maxed-out fuel pump because the new turbo setup was ready to party. Thankfully John Urist of Hellion Turbo loaned them a Weldon 2445A pump, the next size larger so they could race in the morning.

“In the morning we made our first full pass on low boost and went from a previous personal best in the 5.20s straight to 4.96—as we began feeding in more power we realized that even with the big pump we couldn’t give it enough fuel on top end, so we backed it down to 28psi and let it fly, instead working on the short track times,” Drew said. As you know, in the 26×8.5 small tire racing world, only a handful of people have been that fast on such a small tire, regardless of the powerplant, which makes the feat of doing so on such a small motor that much more impressive. To put that into perspective, on that pass they shut the car off at the eighth-mile and still coasted to a 7.8-second quarter-mile time…how’s that for fast?

But we digress; when he said, let it fly, what he meant was that on the morning of the race, after realizing that they were not only down on power because the fuel system couldn’t keep up with the demand of the engine on kill, but the street car amenities of the Cobra meant it was over 200 pounds heavier than most cars in the class. So what did they do? They did what had to be done to stay competitive.

“On the morning of the event, we decided to ditch the radiator, alternator, cooling system, and accessories to try and get it down the track quicker—we dropped 80 pounds and were still overweight,” Drew said.

After rescaling the car just minutes before entering eliminations, Jack hit the staging lanes and went rounds until ultimately facing the number one qualifier in the semi-final round; a seasoned racer with a wicked-fast, ultra light, big-cubic inch small-block Ford powered race car. “We continued to tweak the tune and the suspension all the way until the last round, and ultimately we lost by a tight margin—we went a 4.81 to his 4.80,” Drew said.

It was bittersweet; as they unknowingly built a real contender with power windows, carpets and a mini-mouse of a motor; and yet, they knew that with the proper injectors and a more aggressive tune they might have walked away with the W.

Fast-forward the clock some months and they found themselves thrashing for another big West Coast, small-tire event; same story, missing parts, and late-nights. Except, this time, they had to repair an oil pan when the car went skyward on the first test hit. Nonetheless, they backed up their Vegas run in eliminations with a 4.73 at 154 mph thanks to bigger injectors and an upgraded XFI system, which, as we mentioned, makes it the quickest 4.6L-powered Terminator Cobra on earth…on a baby 8.5-inch tire no less.

Beneath the Bogart wheels you’ll find Lamb drag brakes, ceramic bearings, and plenty of Racecraft suspension components.

It’s hard to believe just how fast this Cobra is going on itty-bitty 26×8.5 Mickey Thompson drag radials.

“Funny thing is, we could easily take 250 pounds out of the car and go even faster, but then we would need a bit more cage work and we would be tearing apart such a nice car,” Drew said.

Sure, the car has plenty more left in it, but at what expense? For AED, while they’re always searching for more, anything beyond its current state, and the car loses one of the very things that makes it so unique, it’s perfect aesthetics.

Speaking of perfection, which as you’ve noticed, is a common theme here; while you may think that Drew’s favorite part of the car is its killer looks or serious speed, in reality, what makes him happiest is seeing it launch straight. In fact, he takes the most pleasure in the subtle things most wouldn’t notice, like how the car requires very little steering input going down the track or how after a 100-foot wheelie it landed back in the center of the groove—he lives for the nuances, the small things and the difficult ones required of a car at this level.

Perhaps what makes this car so great is that the owner and the builder sweated the small stuff, settled for nothing less than perfection, and stuck to their guns of race car performance with show-car aesthetics—it wasn’t easy, but then again, how does the old saying go; if it was easy, everyone would be doing it, right?

“I joke with my wife that AED stands for Adversity Every Day, and if you’re into building and racing fast cars, you know exactly what I mean,” Drew said.

A Look at Two LS Powered GM Pickup Trucks

When did half-ton pickup trucks become so cool? Probably about the same time folks realized they offer the same level of style and rear wheel drive performance potential as traditional 2-door coupes, sedans and convertibles, but for a fraction of the buy-in cost. We get it, too. Who needs a numbers matching, 1965 Tri-Power GTO, Hemi Road Runner or Mustang Cobra Jet when a tenth of the cash will buy any number of desirable V8 powered late model half-tonners? Add a few bolt-on goodies and these LS (GM), Modular OHC (Ford) and Gen III Hemi (Ram) V8 powered pickups can be just as quick and nimble as any classic muscle car.

Okay, we lied. We’d love a vintage Goat, ‘Runner or ‘Stang, but you cannot deny that pickups are the budget Car Crafter’s best friend. Done right, they combine the best traits of a hot rod, daily driver and parts hauler, all in one (just ask Truck Norris). In this story, lets’ examine a pair of potent but stealthy LS powered GM pick ‘em ups assembled from loose parts by the guys at NextGen performance in Spencer, Massachusetts. The money man behind this pair of trucksters is Mike “Tarmac Daddy” Shea. As one of the principles at Palmer Paving – a giant New England road surface contractor – Shea insisted on daily-driver reliability, and he got it. He also got more than twice the power of a stock truck, thanks to a smart combination of refurbished stock and inexpensive add-on parts. Lets’ have a look.

The Orange Monster 2002 GMC Sierra 1500, turbo 6.0 452 hp / 473.8 lb/ft

With its’ Safety Orange paint, blinking roof-top orange safety beacon and spoof door insignias (they read Department of Turbocharging), this utilitarian Jimmy would look right at home on a construction site lugging plywood, bags of cement, and other tools of the trades. However, this is one Sierra that’s been reformulated especially for play time.

Under the hood rests a totally stock iron block 6.0 that’s been fitted with a home-brewed turbo kit that kicks 452 hp and 473.8 lb/ft to the rear tires. Originally built in Ft. Wayne, Indiana by GM Truck and Bus plant workers, the stock drivetrain consisted of a 5.3 V8 and 4L60E automatic. Hoping to offset any potential turbo lag, NextGen swapped in a few more cubes via a refreshed – but otherwise stone stock – 6.0 liter.

Best of all, the 5.3 and 6.0 motor mounts are identical so it was a drop-in maneuver. The central nervous system (wiring harness and ECU) from a 2001 one-ton 2500 HD Silverado pickup connect the truck’s heart and body. And while the 5.3’s 4L60E 4-speed automatic can be beefed, a freshly rebuilt 4L80E went under the cab instead to squash any doubts.

Since GM only installs the burly 4L80E in ¾-ton-and-larger pickups, which take a different transmission cross member, Buzzell adapted the 4L80E mount to the 4L60E cross member. Conveniently, GM designed the cab floor tunnel to clear either transmission, so the only remaining detail was shortening the driveshaft by 2 inches and upgrading from 1330 to 1350 U-joints and yokes. Driveshaft Dave from Fleet Pride in Millbury, MA handled the chore.

Out back, the stock 30-spline, 8.5 inch rear axle – which GM Truck and Bus delivered with a 3.42 ratio and centrifugal-type locking differential – is retained. Buzzell says: “As weird as this differential is, with its centrifugal weight and dog gear setup, I’ve never broken one in general high performance use. Naturally, if you mount sticky drag slicks chances of breakage go way up, but for this purpose the stock locker is up to the job”.

And while the empty cargo bed, live axle, and increased power can trigger axle hop in most modified pickup trucks, the stock Silverado / Sierra staggered rear shock absorber layout (the driver side is mounted behind the axle centerline, the passenger side shock ahead of it) does a fine job of keeping the tires planted. Did the original 396 big block Camaro use a similar staggered-shock setup for the same reason? Yes it did.

NextGen’s Eric Buzzell says, “About the most complicated detail was fabricating and welding the passenger side exhaust manifold out of 304 stainless steel materials, and plumbing the turbo and intercooler systems”. Behind the wheel, the odd thing is how quiet the Orange Monster is. As with any tuned-up Buick turbo V6, it is possible to run without a muffler since much of the exhaust sound is absorbed by the turbocharger. That allowed installation of a Doug Thorley electric exhaust cut-out. When open, the stock single exhaust system is bypassed and the turbo spins up a little bit quicker.

Hardly a show poodle, this daily driven truck’s cooling duties are handled by the stock 5.3 V8 radiator (re-cored) and electric fans from a 2002 LS1 Camaro donor. It surprised us to learn that GM employed mechanical cooling fans on pickups all the way up to 2005. Ridding the serpentine belt accessory drive from this task sent an extra 15 horsepower to the rear tires. Ahead of the radiator, an eBay sourced intercooler helps maintain maximum charge density. With its stock steel wheels, Safety Orange paint and austere vibe, more than a few ZO6 drivers have watched the Orange Monster pull away on the open highway.

2004 Chevrolet Silverado; The Red Herring LSA supercharged 5.3 410.13 hp / 422 lb/ft.

Back in 2014, GM issued a factory service bulletin recalling nearly 20,000 2009-2013 CTS-V Cadillacs and 2012-2013 ZL1 Camaros. Though each was powered by the mighty Eaton-supercharged 6.2 liter LSA engine, a little item called the torsional isolator had a tendency to loosen up and rattle at idle. The affected superchargers didn’t stop working, they just made noise…more noise than a Caddy CTS-V owner wanted to hear while arriving at the country club valet parking station. The resulting warranty repair campaign (as described in GM Service Bulletin number 13313) put thousands of otherwise good superchargers on the used parts market.

The guys at NextGen Performance were ahead of the curve with a simple kit designed to allow fitment of these surplus belt-driven LSA blowers atop serviceable boneyard 5.3, 5.7 and 6.2 LS2 and LS3 V8’s. All it took was a quick drive coupler fix and these blowers were ready to breathe new life – and power – into LS engines on the cheap. (Read more information on that here)

The Red Herring Silverado was an early recipient of this NextGen LSA supercharger swap kit. Knowing the belt-driven LSA supercharger can produce boost sooner than an exhaust-driven turbocharger, the Red Herring’s stock displacement 5.3 liter LS was retained after some basic refurbishment. To bolster the crank-mounted pulley for the added duty of turning the Eaton supercharger, the crank snout and pulley were machined for a drive pin. Otherwise, the stock hydraulic roller cam (with LS6 valve springs added) and related bits were retained.

Another budget-motivated departure from the Orange Monster was keeping the stock 4L60E automatic transmission, but sending it to Maine Transmission Rebuilding where Eric Engel swapped in heftier bands, clutches, drums and a five-gear planetary from a 4L65E. This added a margin of safety without breaking the bank.

The stock 1,800 rpm stall speed torque converter – complete with functional lock-up feature – was retained as was the 8.5 inch rear axle. Still equipped with the centrifugal-type locker unit, a stroke of luck back in 2004 resulted in factory installation of somewhat uncommon 3.73 rear axle ratio. This helps the low end surge off the line but thanks to the overdrive top gear, doesn’t penalize the sedate highway manners of the LSA boosted 5.3.

Like the turbocharged Orange Monster, the supercharged Red Herring can fry the rear tires at will, but there’s a more obvious high performance mood on board. Much of it stems from the constant supercharger whine and burbling side-exit exhaust system. Both trucks carry factory-issue four wheel disc brakes with functional ABS. The subtly slammed Red Herring sits on Belltech spindles, shocks, springs and shackles. Just an inch lower than the Orange Monster, which received a two-inch lowering kit from McGaughy.

Either way, turbocharged or supercharged, an LS powered pickup truck represents a fantastic value for the performance seeker who also needs to get some work done. Plus, with their overdrive-equipped transmissions and stock cam timing, both examples depicted here can nudge 20-mpg when driven gently on the open road. Think it over, a fun truck might be your cure for the overpriced muscle car blues!

A former highway department fleet truck, the orange hue is factory original. It’s funny, when applied to GM muscle cars, it was called Hugger Orange (Z/28) and Carousel Red (GTO Judge). But when the exact same paint formula appeared on International Harvester vehicles, it was aptly named Safety Orange. Here SMG Motoring’s Fred Simmons watches as the Orange Monster cranks 452 horsepower on SMG Motoring’s Dynojet.

Truck sourced LS blocks might be 60 pounds heavier, but their cast iron construction adds rigidity and a better rebuild factor than car-sourced LS1 aluminum alternates. The stock throttle body and intake manifold are well suited to the 76 millimeter On-3 Performance turbocharger.

Eric Buzzell is a thinking man but admitted to “positioning the turbo where it fit best”. The braided oil feed line assures lubrication while the exhaust housing wrap reduces heat radiation to vulnerable surfaces.

Skipping fashion for function, dress-up goodies were intentionally ignored. The Turbosmart WG45 waste gate is set to pop at 7.0-psi.

Buzzell crafted the turbo-feed exhaust manifold from CNC plasma-cut 304 stainless plate and a pile of raw mandrel-bent tubing. The outside diameters range from 1-7/8 to 3.0 inches. The stock coil-near-plug ignition is fully up to the task.

The turbo runs so quietly, the Doug’s Headers plate-type electric exhaust cut-out is usually left open. Buzzell says: “You can definitely feel the extra power when it is open”.

Sandwiched between the radiator and grille, the intercooler helps maintain charge density moving down the road.

The stock 8.5-inch rear axle and its 3.42 gears remain untouched. Tough enough for street use, all parties agree its lifespan wouldn’t be long with sticky drag slicks. We dig the staggered shocks and single tailpipe.

Inside, can you spot the circular turbo boost gauge? It’s the only hint of the performance lurking under hood. The 6,000 rpm factory tachometer is accurate and a far cry from the rinky dink optional tachs from the sixties and seventies.

The in-house graphics department at Palmer Paving had some fun with the door insignias. The 1953 marking alludes to truck owner Mike Shea’s birth year.

The Dynojet chassis dyno curves (torque is the top line) show how quickly boost comes on then stays strong. Turbo lag is absent.

Sitting a bit lower on its Belltech-fortified suspension, the supercharged Red Herring is seen on the SMG Motoring Dynojet while making 410 horsepower and 422 lb/ft at the tires with 8 pounds of boost (stock). If this was a 6.0 instead of a 5.3 long block, chances are the output would be virtually the same as the Orange Monster. Both trucks use ARP head studs and LS9 gaskets to contain the boost.

Looking like the Ft. Wayne assemblers put it there on day one, the LSA-sourced supercharger is the simpler installation of the two. There’s no turbo or external plumbing to mount. You could almost install an LSA blower without pulling the engine…almost. The big snag is the need to add a pulley drive pin to the crank snout. It’s not easily done leaning over the fender or working on your back.

GM used two different intercoolers on the LSA. The black powder coated unit with ribs (shown) came on ZL1 Camaros (580 hp) and feed the liquid intercooler from the front of the engine. The Caddy CTS-V-sourced units (556 hp) have a non-ribbed, cast aluminum cover and feed liquids from the rear, where they hassle with the firewall. For easier installation, NextGen prefers the Camaro unit (shown).

Eric holds the item responsible for the landslide of warranty take-off LSA blower units. It’s a spring-damped torsional isolator and is meant to buffer harmonics between the blower drive pulley and internal rotors. Unfortunately the spring eats into the plastic housing and causes unpleasant noises. NextGen replaces the unit with a solid piece and the problem is solved.

“Hmmm, if we can figure a way to mount dirt cheap LSA superchargers onto garden variety 5.3 and 6.0 LS engines, we might be onto something”. Here, NextGen’s Eric Buzzell considers the possibilities. Note the Caddy-spec smooth top intercooler lid.

Though I.C.T. Billet already offered adapter-plate kits to match the truck heads’ cathedral ports to the LSA-spec rectangle port openings, NextGen tackled the accessory drive belt problem. Here’s the prototype plate supporting the alternator and idler pulley. It was made by NextGen CNC machinist Jeremy Farrow. Look for a full story here.

The Chevy and GMC interiors are virtually identical, and even share the 6-grand tach. The column shifter connects to a fortified 4L60E transmission with manual-shift capability.

Born with 3.73 cogs instead of the usual 3.42’s, the rest of the Red Herring’s rear axle remains stock. The Belltech 4 inch drop kit takes lowering to the limit before frame notching is required.

As engine speed rises, so does boost as the Eaton huffer reaches 8 psi. The torque curve is on top.

Many Car Crafters of a certain age worry that the younger generation isn’t interested in keeping the flame alive. In 2005 GM stepped up to standard 17 x 7.5 hoops, which stand ready to accept a wider range of high performance rubber. NextGen equipped both trucks with ’05-up 17×7.5 inch rims and General Grabber UHP tires. To achieve a big-and-bigger stance, front / rear tire sizes are 255/60R-17 and 275/55R-17 on both trucks.

A Trip Down Memory Lane: 1967 Camaro 40 Years in the Making

With so much new technology available on the market to improve the performance of vintage rides, Steve Gray says people can be pretty dismissive when it comes to his classic 1967 Camaro. After all, it’s not LS-powered—it just has a little, 400ci small-block Chevrolet with a plate kit. There are no exotic electronics, no EFI, no turbos.

Factor in a 3,700-pound travel weight with a driver, small tires, and leaf springs, and Steve says most folks guess it’s a low-11-second car. Well, they’d be wrong. Steve has owned and raced his Camaro for nearly 40 years, so it has benefited from endless tuning and tinkering that has helped propel it from the 12-second zone to its current best e.t. of 9.91 at 137 mph.

After buying the brand-new, fully optioned, hide-a-way-headlight car in 1978—his senior year in high school—Steve immediately started making his Chevy faster. “I did heads and a cam, and then things really got going when I started playing with nitrous in 1983,” Steve says. “Back then, Nitrous Oxide Systems just had three options: 125-, 175-, and 225hp kits. I picked the middle-of-the-road system, and it’s been on the car ever since.”

By the 1990s, Steve was dipping into the 10s, which was pretty fast for a street car back then. In fact, it was fast enough that the car remained in a kind of stasis for more than a decade until a cracked block forced Steve to make a change.

“I had run the car for more than 10 years with countless nitrous passes, so the engine didn’t owe me a thing,” Steve recalls. “I was looking to go faster anyway, so it was time to give the engine a full rebuild.”

Although he had been using a factory GM block for years, Steve took the opportunity to upgrade the powerplant to a Dart Little M cast-iron engine block. The forged Eagle rotating assembly out of the old engine was swapped over, along with a set of 14.45:1 Ross Racing pistons. The heads were also built on the serious side, with a camshaft spec’d by AFR employee Tony Mamo to work in tandem with the nitrous. Much of the intake and exhaust system was swapped over from the old combination, but Steve was still on the lookout for upgrades whenever he could find them, including a new Holley 950hp carburetor.

Once everything came together, the engine was dyno’d at an impressive 661 hp and 535 lb-ft of torque without nitrous. With the 175hp nitrous plate, Steve would now be looking at well over 800 hp when he hits the button.

Other than the engine, the transmission received the most updates. As horsepower levels increased, Steve switched to a TH400, which he eventually smoked with a healthy dose of nitrous. The upgrade was an Ultimate Vasco 400 from Mike’s Transmission in Lancaster, California. To help the hit off the line, they installed a 5,500-rpm stall torque converter to better match the new engine’s 7,200-rpm shift point.

While much of the engine and transmission is new, the rest of the car is as close to authentic as it gets. Some of the components, including the brakes, date back to the early 1980s, while other parts like the rollcage, were added later when the Camaro got fast. The 9-inch rearend has been in the car so long that Steve had to take his best guess at what’s inside of it.

While Steve’s Camaro continues to evolve and becomes faster at the track, he refuses to compromise its roots: “Every time I race the car, turn a wrench on it, or even just start it up, it takes me for a trip down memory lane. For me, there’s just nothing that can beat that.”

Tech Notes

Engine: Although Steve’s Camaro has had many engines over the years, the latest is a 400ci small-block that’s based on a Dart Little M block with ARP head and main studs. The rotating assembly starts with an Eagle 4340 crank riding on TRW bearings, which connect 6-inch H-beam rods to 14.45:1 Ross pistons with Sealed Power Hellfire rings. The Richmond Gear–driven Comp solid-roller camshaft was spec’d by AFR with 266 degrees of duration on the intake, 272 on the exhaust, and 0.688 inch of lift. The heads are 227cc runner AFR units, which have been CNC-ported and fitted with 2.10/1.60-inch valves. Comp also supplied the pushrods and valvesprings, which are bumped by a T&D shaft-mount rocker-arm system. Up top, engine airflow is handled by a ported Edelbrock Super Victor intake and Holley 950 HP series carburetor that has been flowed to more than 1,000 cfm. The fire is lit off by an old-school MSD 6AL with Taylor plug wires.

Cooling: A big-compression engine means big heat. Steve wanted to street-drive and hot-lap his car, so the cooling system received plenty of attention. The radiator is a large Griffin aluminum piece, which is supported by twin electric fans and a Meziere water pump.

Fuel System: The fuel system is another old-tech part, and it starts with the factory gas tank that has a sump welded in. From there, a Holley black pump pushes fuel up to the engine, while a separate Holley black pump sends fuel from a 1-gallon fuel cell into the nitrous system.

Exhaust: The Hooker Super Comp headers have survived several engine swaps and feature 1-7/8-inch-diameter primary tubes. A full 3-inch exhaust has also been on the car for years and dumps into a set of single-chamber Flowmaster mufflers.

Transmission: Steve chose an Ultimate 400 from Mike’s Transmissions to ensure everything remained solid. Mike builds the Ultimate Vasco 400s with a modified case, billet input shaft and front drum, billet intermediate shaft, high-pressure valvebody with transbrake, heavy-duty 36-element sprag, roller bearings, and a revised clutch count. A 5,500-rpm stall torque converter from Continental connects the transmission to the engine.

Rearend: As much as it hurt Steve to put a non-GM part in his car, he credits the Ford 9-inch rearend with lasting forever. The basic bare-bones unit has 4.10 gears, Posi-traction, aftermarket axles “of some sort,” and not much else.

Chassis: You can’t get away with running a car for nearly 40 years without twisting the frame into a pretzel—unless you have some type of chassis stiffening. A set of ancient Lakewood frame connectors tie the front and rear subframes and are further connected by an eight-point rollcage with swing-out bars that were installed years ago.

Suspension: Steve kept the suspension simple, performing effective upgrades over the years. Up front is a set of QA1 shocks with Moroso drag springs and Smith Racecraft upper and lower control arms; out back, the leaf-spring suspension is helped by a set of Calvert Racing CalTracs bars.

Brakes: Steve installed the brakes at a time when he didn’t have any money, so the fronts are discs off a 1970 Nova and the rears are factory drums. “I’ve thought of upgrading, but the car seems to stop fine,” he says.

Wheels/Tires: The front tires are old enough that they have 165/R15 86S on the side as a size. The rear tires are standard 28/10.5R15 Mickey Thompson ET Drag slicks. The wheels are from Centerline, “back when there was only one kind you could buy,” Steve says.

Paint/Body: The body of the Camaro is all steel and still retains the factory hideaway headlights. Steve says the paint is “whatever blue looked good to me in 1986.”

Interior: The interior is standard street-strip stuff, with Kirkey Racing seats, a B&M shifter, and several Auto Meter gauges inside of the car and on the cowl, with an Auto Meter Monster Tach to signal when it’s time to shift. Both the dash and door panels remain factory 1967 Camaro.

Grudge Secrets Revealed!

Grudge and no-prep drag racing is perhaps one of the most exciting forms of motorsports to come down the pike in quite a while. The closed-hood mystery of some of the rides, variable track prep, and a no-rules mentality leads to wild, exciting, and unpredictable racing, much like the Fuel Altereds of yesteryear.

On the West Coast, one of the biggest names in grudge racing is Jermaine “Jay” Boddie, famous not only for his 1963 Nova but for the packed-house grudge races he hosts at Sacramento Raceway a number of times a year. We were fortunate enough to attend his No Excuses 3 race to check out some of the best grudge cars the West Coast had to offer. The Pro Mods (round-tube chassis, full fiberglass body) were thankfully separated into a different class to make things fair, although if any steel-body, big-tire cars thought they could run with them, they were encouraged to enter.

With an extreme variety of cars, walking around the pits was quite a treat. We talked to owners and drivers about the specifications and strategies involved in this type of racing and how they thought their cars might perform that given day. Unfortunately, the secretive nature of grudge racing means that prying exact specs out of racers can be quite a task. Still, we were able to weasel basic information out of many competitors, including times. To paraphrase one racer: It’s not what you can run on your best pass, it’s what you can run on the next pass. Oddly enough, the fastest cars seemed the most likely to give out specifics, as many of their quickest passes were known.

When the action got started, big-tire, small-tire, and Pro Mods all started putting down fast times. If you couldn’t run in the 4s in the eighth-mile (even in Small Tire), this probably wasn’t a race you should expect to win. Not all cars were in these shootouts, however, as there was plenty of no-time grudge racing to go around that involved everything from new muscle to pickup trucks.

Unfortunately, Big Tire was the only class to finish out its race, as a bad crash by Rob Cacioppo’s Pro Mod cut the action short. With the night getting late and quite a bit of moisture in the air, Boddie made the tough choice to call the race, and the pot was split in the Pro Mod and Small Tire classes. Even with the shortened action, there were still plenty of chills, thrills, and spills, and we came away with enough knowledge to make our head spin as we dove headfirst into the world of grudge racing.

Jermaine Boddie

The man of the hour was Jermaine Boddie, who had just reintroduced his 1963 Nova to the world after a complete rebuild. After running a previous best quarter-mile time of 6.35 on drag radials, the Chevy now featured a weight reduction, a brand-new Miner Brothers Hemi with twin turbos, and a beautiful paint job from Doug Reed. Having perhaps more power than anyone actually worked against Boddie in his first outing, as he spun right before the eighth-mile and had to lift. This allowed Troy Baugh to sneak past and take the win by half a bumper.

Roger Holder

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Roger is one of the few racers who runs back east with the radial guys in his 2000 Camaro. He also held the quarter-mile drag-radial record with a 6.07, so his timeslips aren’t a secret to anyone, either. “I can’t really hide how fast the car is these days at grudge races,” Roger says. “Of course, getting down the track is always another matter.” In Sacramento, Roger entered the Big Tire and Pro Mod classes, as he felt the power of his Proline Racing engine could run with the fiberglass-body cars. Unfortunately, Roger had nothing but problems after a blazing 4.0-second qualifying pass; a reminder that no-one is guaranteed a win. When a last-minute converter swap between rounds didn’t fix the issue, Roger was taken out by Rod Burbage.

Troy Baugh

A crowd favorite with wild burnouts, wild paint, and substantial amounts of methanol-fueled exhaust flame, Troy Baugh’s Camaro is one of those rides where it’s hard to tell an exact elapsed time, and he sure wasn’t telling. What we do know is the car has trapped nearly 150 mph in the eighth-mile, which means 4s aren’t out of the question. It’s also a pretty solid A to B car, as evidenced by him taking out Boddie in eliminations. One thing is clear: When he stuffed an electronically controlled, 585ci big-block with an F3 Procharger into his Camaro, he wasn’t playing to lose.

Renteria Brothers

Perhaps the most well-known four-door on the West Coast, the Renteria brothers have been racing a 1965 Valiant with two extra doors since the late-1970s. Eventually, the car got pretty fast—then really fast—then they had an all-fiberglass body built and went full Pro Mod. Tipping the scales at a mere 2,650 pounds, the Brad Anderson engine topped off with a C rotor PSI blower generates some serious steam, in the form of a best elapsed time of 5.85 at 253 mph in the quarter-mile. It was the team’s first grudge race with the car, but they were pretty unphased. “We’ve had to get down tracks that weren’t prepped for Pro Mods before; you just fiddle with the clutch to get out of the hole and then pull a little power,” says one-of-three brother Mike. With Moe, Larry, and Curly on the butterflies of their engine, you have to love the Renterias’ attitude!

Machine Gun Cutty

We ran into the “Machine Gun Cutty” team right before they were about to make a pass, so we were only able to grab some quick basics. The 1980 Cutlass was more grudge than any other car we ran into, with some questionable paint, beat-up fenders, and a huge big-block with a bunch of nitrous on top. What they would tell us is the engine has more than one stage of spray—with both kits turned on, their total shot is more than 500 hp—and that right now they have a lot more motor than chassis. The Cutlass gets its name by the unique four-pipe collector exhaust, and last time we saw it, the car was headed toward the sky on a launch, typical of a street-type “hook anywhere” chassis tune-up.

Ray Dupree

Alternating between a nonexistent hood a and a Pro Stock–style scoop, Ray’s 1966 Nova is nothing but nitrous once the hood is removed. With old-school nitrous systems galore and a 598 big-block Chevy with a Powerglide, Ray was the giant killer of the bunch and could manage his horsepower down the whole eighth-mile. We’d seen the car run a test pass in the 6s in the eighth with no nitrous, and with “more than a 400 shot,” we expect Ray’s ride is at least low-5s or high-4s, no matter the track conditions. With a Big Tire class grudge victory earlier in the year, nobody was going to underestimate Ray or his purple Nova.

Rod Burbage/Dave Palmer

Rod Burbage is no stranger to drag racing, having campaigned a carbon-fiber-bodied, 5-second Pro Mod Chevelle for a number of years, but his latest fun involves Dave Palmer’s killer street car. The 1965 Chevelle is mostly steel and runs a 23-degree-headed big-block, so what explains the high-4-second eighth-mile elapsed times? The key is an enormous 40 pounds of boost, which helps the 477ci big-block generate an estimated 2,000–2,500 hp. With plenty of chassis experience, Dave’s hard-hooking Chevelle is always one to watch at any grudge event.

Doug Reed

The man responsible for the beautiful paint on many of the northern California grudge cars, Doug Reed, has his own 1966 El Camino to play with. The street-driven Chevy (complete with high beams) had just been fitted with 94mm turbos before the event and only had a few laps prior to the race. In a Hollywood ending, Doug waded through the field of Big Tire cars all the way to the finals, where he pulled off the win! If the El Camino looks familiar, that’s because Doug raced against the Plan B Corvette driven by “Daddy” Dave in Cash Days. From the West Coast to the East, Doug’s Elky is definitely one to watch.

Nathan Schaldach

Part of the fun of grudge racing is you may see a certain type of car that’s very popular (in this case, a Mustang Fox-body) and have no idea how fast it is. A flat hood, no turbos, small tires—nitrous? Nate’s ’89 runs pretty well, thanks to a 440ci LSX engine with a healthy dose of nitrous oxide. The low-5-second sleeper is known around the area for being able to hook anywhere, at any time, which makes it a perfect grudge car. We also snagged the last photo of an era for Nate, as he’s reported he’s going to keep the small tires but switch to twin turbos for the car’s next outing.
