Ukraine and Syria explore restoration of diplomatic ties amid strategic discussions

During a visit to Damascus, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha held high-level talks with Syria's de facto leader Ahmad al-Sharaa. The diplomatic dialogue also extended to meetings with Prime Minister Mohamed al-Bashir and Syria's Foreign Minister Asad Hasan al-Sheybani, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.

Ukraine expressed its interest in re-establishing diplomatic ties contingent upon the new Syrian regime's respect for international law and Ukraine's territorial integrity. Sybiha emphasized that restoring these ties could catalyze trade, scientific collaboration, and cultural exchanges, as well as revive Syrian student enrollment in Ukrainian universities. Diplomatic relations were severed after Bashar al-Assad's regime recognized the annexation of Crimea and the occupation of Ukrainian territories.

Sybiha also underscored Ukraine’s willingness to provide humanitarian aid to Syria, including sending 500 tons of Ukrainian flour as part of the "Grain from Ukraine" program. Over 20 food trucks are expected to arrive in Syria in the coming days. The presence of Ukraine's agricultural minister Vitaliy Koval in the delegation underscores Kyiv’s serious intent on fostering cooperation.

A key discussion point was bringing war criminals to justice. Ukraine offered to share its expertise in gathering evidence and investigating war crimes. ▪️𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 previous international agreements such as the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that emphasize the need for urgent action to combat climate change,

▪️𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 the critical role that human activity, particularly industrial emissions, plays in contributing to climate change and the impact it has on global environmental stability.

▪️𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 the disproportionate effect of climate change on marginalized communities, particularly in developing countries, and the need to incorporate human rights into environmental policies,

▪️𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 deep concern about the increasing levels of carbon emissions globally and the lack of accountability among some of the largest polluters

▪️𝗦𝘁��𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 the importance of international cooperation and investment in renewable energy to ensure a sustainable future for all,

▪️𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 the insufficient efforts by some states to curb their greenhouse gas emissions despite their commitments to international climate agreements.

Countries including France, U.K., U.S.A., Germany, Russia, China, and India hereby resolve to:

1. Hold world countries accountable for excessive emissions of carbon, with particular focus on high-emitting nations, ensuring transparency in reporting and adherence to emission reduction targets. (𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮)

2. Integrate human rights into climate policies, ensuring that vulnerable and marginalized communities are protected from the adverse effects of climate change. (𝗨𝗦𝗔)

3. Increase investment in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric

power to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and promote cleaner energy. (𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲)

4. Promote investment in elect electric cars and other electric transport solutions to reduce emissions from the transportation sector. (𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮)

5. Decarbonize industries, energy production, and transport sectors through the adoption of renewable energy, hydrogen technology, and carbon capture techniques. (𝗨𝗞)

6.Enhance climate resilience by promoting low-carbon technologies and strengthening infrastructure to withstand climate-related disasters. (𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮)

7. Encourage bilateral climate partnerships and international cooperation to foster global collaboration in combating climate change and sharing technologies. (𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮)
