Because she's a deep soul. Repost from @urbandesidocumentary - It's well understood that the #BritishAsian scene spearheaded #UrbanAsian or #UrbanDesi movements however across the ocean there were inspired visionaries who were experimenting with their own cultural experience. The eclectic and determined @djrekha was one of those champions of culture who hacked away at the jungle vines of societal prejudice to pave the way for a community of people to enjoy #Bhangra in #NYC. Her perspective is always insightful and I can't wait to step into her mind to uncover precious facts that future generations can learn from. . I am mentioning some key pillars of the community now on social media as I've been getting a lot of questions (rightfully so) about what the Documentary will be about. Without spoilers I am trying to declare some key positions but by no means am I going to be able to reveal the plots and storylines until we get into production. I want to be transparent with you. I'd welcome DM's and personal messages from the industry, arts scene and cultural contributors and curators over the last 4 decades to come forth and make yourselves known. As I've mentioned, the list is well over 500 people so far. It's a mountain of knowledge we are tapping into here. . from @djpetra - Okay, true story: I started working for @djrekha at @basementbhangra almost 8 years ago. I was doing the guestlist at the door, selling t-shirts, passing out flyers. I never imagined I would be on stage one day. I quietly studied the DJ sets and the dance floor like textbooks, and over the years I witnessed the hard work Rekha put into holding a space for her communities. I remember the day I finally worked up the courage to tell her I was learning to DJ myself. From then on, Rekha took me under her wing. She gave me guidance, support and opportunities, and brought me on at #BasementBhangra 4 years ago. I've learned so much from her, and playing here I've grown into the DJ I am today. I'm eternally thankful to everyone who comes out every month to share their energy on the dance floor. And to Rekha for believing in me. Now the party is ending its 20-year run this summer. Only 3 more to go! The next one is Thursday June 1st.
