Empires smp thoughts: Modernization

Someone pointed out that the empires smp s1 cast are royalty, compared to what the s2 cast is. With the thousand year time skip, royal bloodlines have been made nonexistent. With the empires collapsed and no suitable heir, the survivors of the rapture developed modern governments. With the exception of Glimmer Grove, the Order of succession for the rest of the continent is not hereditary. Hence why none of the rulers refer to themselves by noble titles, unlike S1. “It’s mayor actually” The only other princess is Gem, who is self proclaimed.

Modernization includes technology as well. The S1 cast endured long meetings and communicated through letters deliver by messenger bird. The type of bird carrier varied between empire. (Rivendell used snow owls, Lost Empire had parrots, etc) They only resorted to communicators in emergency situations; whereas in S2 timeline, unless they are discussing trade deals, a communicator is all they technically need.

Due to most written text being destroyed, the only preserved document the historian guild has access to is the Ocean Queens journal; which has faced considerable damage. A thousand years has changed a lot of the language. The letters found in the ruins has a vastly different writing structure, compared to universal ‘Common.’ It’s the empires equivalent of Shakespearean English compared to modern English. This has caused much context to be lost in translation.

COUNTDOWN ART?!!? There’s gonna be more?!? Will we see other minor characters get some spotlight?! THE COVEN HEADS!?

Also my girl Viney! 🥺 It was just the TINIEST crumb, but Dana gave us something to keep us Viney fans thriving and feeding! I love this girl and look!!! The closest thing we have to a canon casual outfit for her!!! And Skara and Mattholomule and Boscha!!!

Viney looks so cheery and beaten up, I can only imagine WHAT happened, but it likely has to do with Puddles, whom Viney is gesturing to out of sight, probably telling him not to freak out and that it’s okay! I love Viney being disheveled and messy with scratches and cuts, it just adds to her character as a rough-and-tumble Beastkeeper, and the tooth in her hair!

Poor Matt... If Mattholomule not returning, why Dana draw him so often??? But yeah I love how Boscha’s dislike and grudge against him persists, I guess she got revenge for the Grom photo-bombing!

And SKARA, just looking so calm and dainty and pretty, just a little prep of a girl! I love her red dress and golden slippers! I regularly switch between “Skara actually IS pretty flawed even if she’s obviously way more kind than Boscha” and “SKARA DID NOTHING WRONG” for this girl!

Also love that they’re going with Jockscha more and more... Bump is just TIRED, and even Puddles is on the detention list! Seems Viney keeps getting into mischief and I love that of her, while Skara is just playing music like she did nothing wrong, even though she’s slated for detention, and you know what I agree with her!

Obviously I can see Dana drawing these characters to throw us fans a bit of a bone, but I am hoping that we might see more of them in the future! 👀 Definitely Mattholomule, the wait has finally paid off...

I love the various Hexside kids, I could watch a whole show about them, and naturally this makes me excited for the Glandus Trio that Gus and Mattholomule will meet in Through the Looking Glass Ruins! And hey, based on that recent promo we saw, there’s a shot of Luz playing Grudgby, so we might get some brief Boscha and Skara action in that scene too!

Also again... I just LOVE the expressions. The body language and motion, the way Dana draws people! Boscha’s fury, Viney’s playfulness and flippant gesturing, the peaceful serenity of Skara, and how disheveled Mattholomule looks! I’d love to see an entire sketchbook of Dana’s drawings of various characters from this show, and just in general! Does someone have a gallery of all of Dana’s art, TOH-related or otherwise?

This content is NOT and it’s a blatant disregard for their audience just to have a larger, more pliable demographic and have more money sent their way.

if you start your argument with “well, teenagers look at porn” 1. shut up 2. theres a HUGE difference between teenagers going after adult content aimed at adults, and adults creating content they know will be seen by kids barely starting puberty

as pointed above, dana has 0 qualms literally commissioning people who make whitewashed fanart of her own fucking game that’s supposed to be all about the inclusivity and safe spaces

fanart of their fat characters showed skinnier than they are in their sprites (although to be real for a moment - Portia is curvy at most and them behaving she’s fat rep is HILARIOUS).

going back to NSFW content: nadia and asra are overwhemlingly sexualized in the game, and were the first to have sexualized CGs and sprites introduced.

CGs: Asra’s here, here aND HERE, Nadia’s here with a NSFW warning because she’s just got her whole fucking ass out. Sprites: Asra’s thank god for whoever compiled it all in one image, Nadia’s and once again, NSFW warning lmfao!

Julian’s sprites on the other hand are noticeably tamer, including the one where he’s fucking strapped in leather. His only sexual (NSFW warning because its literally softcore tentacle porn WHICH, ONCE AGAIN, SHOULDN’T BE PUT IN A GAME AIMED AT 13YOS) CGs were also included months after Nadia and Asra received any of theirs.

Through all of the updates, people have constantly requested that Asra and Nadia’s sexualization be toned down, and time after time The Arcana just churned out fetishistic, hypersexualized content at an absurd rate, especially when compared to the one white love interest.

Oh, speaking of the one white love interest: Julian is based off of Jeff Goldblum (this is not spectulation - they p much bring it up at any given time) but like. If Jeff Goldblum was white. They base their favorite love interest off their supposed favorite man in the world but casually leave his skin tone behind. Lmao.

they also play favorites very obviously - in the prologue, Nadia and Asra have a romance paid scene each. Julian has a scene... that requires no coins. Julian was also the first LI to receive three CGs, two of them requiring no coins, while both Asra’s and Nadia’s first CGs were behind a paywall

Dana and Elle have been notoriously skittish about confirming or denying their characters’ ethnicities. After hyping for weeks on thearcanagame that they would confirm the character’s races they basically made a post that amounted to “well they’re not white lol!”

they only relented after the perfectly understandable outrage... and posted a thread about it on Elle’s twitter. Nothing on the actual thearcanagame blog. Anyway, here’s the thread. Note how there’s mention of Julian being Jeff Goldblum... but nothing about him and Portia being Jewish (or “fantasy Jewish” as it were).

The one time they did confirm their jewishness dana then backpedaled and said she shouldn’t have done that lol.

another fun tidbit of how well The Arcana handles race and how much it cares about feedback from fans: an ask was sent about an anon begging for Nadia to step on them. The blog, with the finesse of a bunch of horny dumbasses, didn’t just publish the ask, but approved of it (even though the fans of color had long, long, LONG been telling everyone not to fetishize Nadia into a “step on me kween” wet dream). People were outraged, of course, and the blog ~apologized~ and said they were still learning.... then a new chapter included a scene of Nadia stepping on the Apprentice. 🙃

not to mention elle, on their twitter, made a passive aggressive “women can be doms?” tweet, trying to twist it into a “yr oppressing women” angle (when the issue is that women of color are always constantly portrayed as aggressive and domineering)

Now for a wombo combo of racism and Elle’s fetishization of mlm:

the devs have spoken at length of how Julian’s and Asra’s relationship was quite unhealthy. In a paid scene in Asra’s route, they’re depicted as Asra being disgusted w Julian touching him+Julian following Asra to his shop when Asra refused his offer to go with him (aka julian... stalked him lmfao).

.......... this scene is promptly followed by a highly sexual scenario where Julian’s pain fetish is played up. Remember how this game is rated PG-13? Me neither. Asra’s previous disgust with Julian is also forgotten, for some reason (and by some reason i mean Elle wants to make them fuck w/o buildup or logic).

Then Asra’s route has yet another paid scene dedicated to Asrian, even though he’s supposed to not even like Julian! And be head over heels with the Apprentice! But Elle just has to make these two be entangled despite insisting their relationship was not good for either of them!

Now here’s the kicker: Julian doesn’t have any paid scenes related to his romance with Asra. Note how it’s one of the brown LIs whose route is highjacked by the white LI, but not vice versa. Hmmmmm.

Now, on the topic of Asra: thearcanagame has said repeatedly that he’s nb and uses he/him pronouns, and promised (since last year) that there would be dialogue where he speaks about his gender

as of the making of this post such dialogue still does not exist

so basically asra is the nb to dumbledore’s gay: anyone who just plays the game w/o keeping up with the official blog has no idea of what asra’s gender is supposed to be.

aka he’s not nb. he’s just a cis guy. the arcana just doesn’t want to put its money where its mouth is, i dont care if elle is nb themself. the team made a promise which has not been fulfilled yet and i suspect will not be.

instead, our introduction to canon nb characters is... these two.

By “these two” i mean neither vulgora nor valdemar are even fucking human, and stick out like sore thumbs with their monstruousness.

so our nb rep is... non-human villains. a few books later one of Nadia’s sisters with they/them pronouns shows up, but that’s too little too late on top of the fact that we should’ve known Asra was nb from the first to begin with. It’s a fucking embarrassment and an insult.

at least two villains are visibly disabled (Lucio’s missing arm and Volta’s blind eye+intentionally asymmetrical face). Julian’s eye doesn’t count because, spoilers, he’s not lacking an eye and even if he was it’d still be hidden behind a dashing eyepatch instead of grotesquely displayed as a sign of his lacking morality.

BUT WAIT! IT DOESN’T EVEN END THERE!

The Arcana Exploits The App Business Model To Price Their Full Game at $500, $1000 if the three extra routes make it out, and they never delivered their Kickstarter rewards:

they took that “subject to change” really seriously, it seems, because now each route, once the game is fully out, is estimated to cost around $170 each.

the tl;dr is basically what’s listed in the beginning of this section, but other highlights from that post are: the use of addictive gambling mechanics such the Wheel of Fortune, and the dazzling calls to action in the new mini-game.

something that The Arcana supporters forget (or choose to ignore) is the fact that for a long, long time the game did not have the mini-game or the log-in rewards for coins. Players depended only on the gambling of the WoF or paying absurd amounts of money for the new chapters.

the devs went from playing the victims who were unable of controlling prices to (as spoken of in the link from mysticmicrotransactions) saying the making of the game (a pathetic little app game backed by a studio and a kickstarter) justifies the prices

they also gave people false hope about maybe changing the prices in the future, all while bleeding money from loyal players in “micro” transactions

the arcana literally added a $99.99 coins option on their latest update

in case it hasn’t sunk in yet: you can pay a hundred dollars upfront to the arcana, and you still will not have access to the whole game

there is no defense to this

none

“it’s free stop whining” let me explain:

“spend months on end accumulating fake currency or pay hundreds of dollars up-front to be able to play” is a scummy business model no matter how you look at it

if i can spend $60 upfront to play an AAA game there’s no excuse to demand more than that for a game with much smaller and, honestly, inferior content

the combination of there being already far and few games featuring lgbt characters and characters of color AND the little cult of personality set up by Dana and Elle makes people feel that spending money to support them is an acceptable expense.

it’s not

manipulating people into spending ridiculous amounts of money and then claiming “it’s their choice” is just scummy business, baby, and thats all the arcana does

the devs are brats who instead of admitting $500 is absurd for a game instead write petty little caricatures into their game - like, lbr: dana, elle, if i could afford diamonds in my hair i wouldn’t have even bothered with your shitstain of a game

despite bragging that ppl would get the full story w/o needing to pay, the paid scenes are pretty much required - the first few books of julian’s route have no romance without accessing any of the paid options. you dont even get so much as a kiss in without handing coins over. many, many people were baffled when julian had a teary break-up scene when from their perspective they hadn’t even started building a relationship.

and i’ve been aware of their bullshit for near a whole year now!

How have non-alcoholic beers gotten so good?

Brewing low-alcohol beer is an ancient art. In the US, the stuff, marketed under the misnomer “non-alcoholic beer,” acquired a reputation for being watery and bland, with a hint of old shoe or urine. Though, to be blunt, up until the craft beer movement of the last two decades, the same could be said of mainstream American beer.

But with drinkers increasingly curious about the health benefits of sobriety, roughly one in six Americans express interest in the drinks, up 30 percent from 2019. That demand has reshaped the technology, and taste, of non-alcoholic—defined as less than 0.5 percent alcohol by volume—options stateside. “We’re coming up on the holiday that sees the highest number of [non-alcoholic] beer sales all year,” says Dana Garves, the founder of Oregon beer-testing facility BrewLab.

How do you get the alcohol out of beer?

Non-alcoholic beer gets its flavor from fermentation, just like its boozy counterparts. All fermented drinks are a smorgasbord of microbes and plant residues, containing thousands of chemicals that shape texture, taste, and smell. There’s the bite of ethanol, the funky resin of hops, the leftover sweetness from the grain, along with tastes and smells from traces of compounds like terpenes, esters, salts, and amino acids.

The trick for brewers lies in removing the alcohol, while leaving complexity intact. Close to 99 percent of a beer is alcohol or water, says Garves, so the margin for error in tweaking that remaining one percent is small.

The easiest way to nix the booze is to heat it. Alcohol boils at a lower temperature than water, and so a brewer can use high temperatures to sift it out—the opposite of distilling liquor. The challenge is that many of those precious scented molecules are also heat sensitive. “Heat tends to really destroy beer,” Garves says. “Anyone who’s left a beer out in the sun for a few hours knows that. It creates a ‘light struck’ flavor, it becomes oxidized.” The beverage loses things like acetaldehyde, an easily evaporated chemical that Garves compares to green apple Jolly Ranchers and that shines through in lagers, and myrcene, which gives the hops in an IPA their spicy, lemony edge.

A key innovation, Garves says, is the widespread adoption of a technique called “vacuum boiling” to remove alcohol. If you’ve ever been at high altitude, you’ve noticed that water boils faster in the low pressure atmosphere. Same is true for ethanol: If a brewer reduces the pressure of the boiling chamber to almost nothing, alcohol will evaporate at room temperature.

Athletic Brewing, a Connecticut outfit which Garves credits with inspiring other craft brewers to tackle non-alcoholic beer, uses a completely different tactic.“We don’t use any of the alcohol removal technologies out there,” Athletic’s head brewer John Walker told Yakima Valley Hops. It’s not that those strategies didn’t work, he said. But that “ultimately, we don’t want to be removing anything.” Athletic is developing a drink with all the taste components of beer, but without making ethanol at all.

How is that even possible? Athletic, which has attracted the investor buzz of a biotech firm, is cagey about its process. Here’s what we do know: The brewer’s setup relies in part on creating a grain base that ferments—spitting out all the interesting, flavorful stuff in beer—but not into alcohol.

According to Garves, there are a couple ways to pull this off. One is to treat the grain base of a beer with enzymes that lock simple sugars into complex chains that yeasts——the microorganisms that convert grain into alcohol—can’t break down. Another is to use picky yeast strains that will turn up their noses at most sugar. The key is in realizing that yeast does a lot more than just “eat sugar, pee alcohol, and fart CO2,” as Garves puts it.

“There’s a whole fermentation cycle yeast go through where they produce a bunch of different flavors,” she says. The banana notes of a Belgian and the “mild buttery” flavor of an English mild both come from their yeasts. If a brewer breaks the relationship between sugar and yeast in a brew, the yeast can still go on making those other flavors.

The mainstreaming of non-alcoholic beer

Perhaps the biggest sign of non-alcoholic beer’s entry to the mainstream is that it’s not just a disruptor’s game. Starting in 2020, Guinness began making a non-alcoholic stout. On its website, the 250-year-old Dublin brewer describes the brews, dubbed the 0.0 lines, as “dark, ruby red liquid and creamy head, hints of chocolate and coffee, smoothly balanced with bitter, sweet and roasted notes.”

Die-hards were open to it, but also skeptical. “Smells a bit like Guinness and pissy pants,” said one British Youtube reviewer. “That looks good, a nice creamy head!” says his camerawoman. Sloshing it around his mouth, he says, “It still has a kind of metal-y taste. Like Guinness, I suppose.” In the end, the verdict seems to be: it’s basically Guinness.

How does the stalwart brewer go about nixing its alcohol? “We start with Guinness,” Aisling Ryan, an innovation brewer at the company, told the Evening Standard shortly after the brew’s release. Then, the brewery cold-filters it, a process that involves cooling down the finished brew, and straining it through a membrane to separate out the solids from the alcohol and water. Finally, the alcohol is distilled off and the water returned to the mix.

Does non-alcoholic beer have to taste different?

Even the best of these faux brews are bound to taste different, and there are always going to be some qualities of alcoholic beers that non-alcoholic brews will struggle to reproduce. Ethanol, after all, is more viscous than water, which could be part of why non-alcoholic beverages feel “thinner” on the tongue.

A 2020 study also found that ethanol plays a role in how other smells and tastes fizz out of the beer. Saliva contains a protein that interacts with all the molecules that constitute a flavor. Ethanol gets in the middle of that interaction, causing some molecules to float out into the nose, while dampening others. So even if a non-alcoholic beer has the same components, they’re not making it into your nose in the same way. (Ethanol may also unravel proteins in your saliva, contributing to the mouthfeel of the drink.) The study found that people tended to describe non-alcoholic beers as maltier, and alcoholic ones as fruitier.

That’s certainly not a knock on the non-alcoholic beverages. Some people like malty beer. And if personal experience is anything to go by, there are plenty of fruit-heavy booze-free options. Maybe the biggest sign of non-alcoholic beer’s ascendance is that you can’t write the entire category off as good or bad anymore—there are options to suit different tastes.

Also, we had a new interview released by TV Guide from NYCC. David was very shy, basically at every question handing the microphone to Chris. I guess, after last year wife-gate he is being a bit more cautious this time around. 😂He did summarize the whole show tho, “After everything we’ve been through after everything you’ve seen, why can’t you f*cking believe?” (X)

We learnt that the new actor who may or may not be William is Susan Sarandon’s son, Miles Robbins. He posted his trailer from the set. (X)

Then came another great moment when Gillian posted one more Instagram Story from the set. Well, from the makeup trailer part of the set!!!! The video is all very cute, show the new actor playing Jackson Van de Kamp, and David Duchovny getting a head massage and being absolutely not bothered when Gillian is putting her phone in his face 😂😂 He just keeps going on about baseball. Also, somewhere over the rainbow in the background is perfect!

Mitch also shared some BTS pictures but I think - based on their outfits - that they are not recent pictures. That said, they are definitely dorky pictures and they all look very good. 😊 (X) A couple of days later we got one more gem of bts looks: David: "Okay, is she doing the crazy eye thing again?" Me: "Dunno, but I'm doing my beacon in the night thing." (X)

We know that they are filming episode 6 now, which is a Skinner-centric episode. We got quite a few pictures from one of the sets and it does look like Skinner’s Vietnam memories are coming to life...(X)

After an incredibly agonising week and all the hype, a Direct finally came but not in the way we wished it. Instead of being a full blow event, it was a Mini Direct and some of the newest games revealed, were merely ports. But hey, who doesn’t love Donkey Kong and Hyrule Warriors? So in our usual Digest fashion, here’s a covering of everything revealed from the Direct, starting with a video and ending with tweets:

Nintendo Continues Momentum Into 2018: Dark Souls, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Mario Tennis Coming To Nintendo Switch:

Updates Bring More Characters and Content to Hits Like Super Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Pokkén Tournament DX

REDMOND, Wash., Jan. 11, 2018 – Nintendo debuted a new Nintendo Direct Mini video presentation today spotlighting a selection of first- and third-party titles coming in early 2018. Following a strong holiday season, Nintendo Switch owners will see a variety of new games and content arriving in the next few months, including DARK SOULS: REMASTERED, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Tennis Aces and Kirby Star Allies games, and a certain green-clad brother bringing a new mode to the Super Mario Odyssey game.

“Nintendo Switch is the fastest-selling home console in history, and Nintendo is not taking our foot off the gas in 2018,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “For the millions of people who just received Nintendo systems as gifts, or consumers getting ready to join the growing community of Nintendo Switch owners, Nintendo and our third-party partners have fun new games and content in store at retail or for digital purchase.”

A sampling of some of the announcements includes

DARK SOULS™: REMASTERED: The first title in the genre-defining action role-playing franchise is coming to Nintendo Switch. DARK SOULS: REMASTERED includes the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, as well as improved framerate and resolution from the original DARK SOULS game for an exhilarating return to Lordran. This marks the franchise’s debut on a Nintendo platform, and now for the first time ever, this revered (and challenging) game can be played on the go. DARK SOULS: REMASTERED launches on May 25.

Mario Tennis Aces: A new Mario Tennis game is bringing a new level of skill and competition to Nintendo Switch. Mario steps onto the court in classy tennis garb for intense rallies against a variety of characters in full-blown tennis battles. New wrinkles in tennis gameplay will challenge your ability to read an opponent’s position and stroke to determine which shot will give you the advantage. And this time the game adds the first story mode since the Mario Tennis game on Game Boy Advance, offering a new flavor of tennis gameplay, with a variety of missions and boss battles. The game launches for Nintendo Switch this spring.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze: Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong return for the franchise’s debut on Nintendo Switch. This title includes all the fun and challenge of the original game, plus a new beginner-friendly mode that lets players enjoy this critically acclaimed adventure as groovy surfing simian Funky Kong. Funky Kong can double jump, hover, perform infinite rolls and even perform infinite underwater corkscrews. Thanks to his sturdy surfboard, even spikes can’t slow him down. The game launches for Nintendo Switch on May 4.

Kirby Star Allies: Kirby’s debut on Nintendo Switch is a grand new adventure packed with content. The new Artist ability lets Kirby unleash his creativity, while the new Spider ability lets him ensnare enemies in webs. Kirby also can hurl new friend hearts at enemies to win them over with love and add them to his party. Plus, up to four friends* can team up and combine Kirby’s unique abilities with ally abilities for powerful new Friend Abilities. The game launches for Nintendo Switch on March 16.

The World Ends with You: Final Remix: This 2008 Nintendo DS game has been updated for Nintendo Switch with HD visuals and a new epilogue that sheds new light on the game’s story. Players can join rhythmic battles using either Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch touch screen. The game is scheduled to launch this year.

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition: A new, ultimate version of the exhilarating action game set in the Zelda universe will include every map and mission, plus all 29 playable characters from both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game, along with all of the previous paid downloadable content. Play as Link, Zelda, Midna, Skull Kid and dozens more in action-packed battles at home or on the go. Additionally, the game includes new outfits for Link and Zelda based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game. This new version launches for Nintendo Switch in spring.

SNK HEROINES ~Tag Team Frenzy~: Play as iconic heroines from SNK’s history in a new, two-on-two tag-team fighting game. Players can activate a variety of Special Moves with the press of a button, and make use of special items to turn the tide of battle. One of the competitors will be Yuri Sakazaki from ACA NEOGEO Art of Fighting 2, which launches today in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch. SNK HEROINES ~Tag Team Frenzy~ launches on Nintendo Switch this summer.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana: When the passenger liner he was aboard sank, the adventurer Adol drifted to a deserted island inhabited by vicious creatures that have evolved in many different ways. To survive, Adol must gather fellow shipwreck survivors and build a base. High-speed battles require players to change between three types of characters at a moment’s notice. The epic RPG launches for Nintendo Switch this summer.

PAYDAY 2: As players join with friends* locally or online to execute elaborate heists, full touch-screen support makes menu navigation easier than ever, while the HD Rumble feature lets them feel everything from explosions to weapon recoil right in their hands. Debuting in the Nintendo Switch version of the game, a new playable character named Joy will be introduced. Joy is a Japanese computer whiz who wears a custom LED light mask that changes her appearance as she sees fit. PAYDAY 2 launches for Nintendo Switch on Feb. 27.

Fe: In this new type of platforming adventure, players run, climb and glide their way through a dark Nordic forest to explore its living, breathing world. Use the motion controls of the Joy-Con controllers to sing in tune with creatures and plants to unlock new abilities. Each song has a distinct sound and feel thanks to HD Rumble. The game launches digitally for Nintendo Switch on Feb. 16.

Celeste: This modern take on the pure action platformer lets Madeline climb any surface on Celeste Mountain if she has the stamina. Playing in Assist Mode lets players tweak the difficulty, from a slower pace to full-on invincibility. Unlockable B-side chapters offer even more challenging adventures. The game launches digitally for Nintendo Switch on Jan. 25.

Game Updates & DLC:

Super Mario Odyssey: A new mini-game called Balloon World is coming to one of the highest-rated games of all time. Once players download the free update and complete the main story, Balloon World will become available. In “Hide It” mode, players have a certain amount of time to hide a balloon. In “Find It” mode, players have the same amount of time to locate balloons hidden by other players from around the world. Players can move up the rankings** by finding hidden balloons and becoming expert hiders. The free update will be released in February with new Snapshot Mode filters and new outfits.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle: A new hero swings into action! Donkey Kong is headed to the game as a playable character, complete with an exclusive new storyline and world to explore. The DLC pack will release in spring and will be available for purchase individually, or as part of the Season Pass or Gold Edition of the game.

Pokkén Tournament DX Battle Pack: The Battle Pack is now available for purchase in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch and includes two Waves of Battle Pokémon and Avatar items. Wave 1 of the Battle Pack contains Battle Pokémon Aegislash and a new Support Pokémon Set featuring Mega Rayquaza and Mimikyu. Aegislash can change between two formes, and players can wield them both. Wave 2 includes the new Battle Pokémon Blastoise and a new Support Pokémon Set featuring Mew and Celebi. Wave 1 will be available Jan. 31, and Wave 2 is scheduled for Mar. 23.

Grievous is maybe six years old in this picture, and Luçien (pronounced Luchien if you’re a human) is in his flying form, known as Uçan, which literally just means ‘flying’. This form is a longer, lankier and semi-quadrupedal version of their normal upright humanoid forms, evolved specifically for combat flight. Most other races with a military or army presence (the Monarchy, the Lights, and divers others) have airships, and so do the Vashaens, but those are almost exclusively for transport and almost never see use in war. Why? Because the Vashaens have themselves as the air-based attack force. As a result, every Vashaen who goes through the royal military, or studies under a savaşçı or şaman, will learn the ability to transform to Uçan. It is a form specifically designed for more agility, maneuverability and staying power in flight, and is particularly devastating. Enemy armies will tell you, if you buy them enough alcohol, that if you think there’s nothing more terrifying than an oncoming army of Vashaens charging you on horseback, you’ve never seen an incoming army of Vashaens diving out of the sky. The Uçan form is more personal than any of the Monarchy’s small single-pilot fighter ships or the Light’s anbarqs could be, and significantly faster, more agile and more precise than both, and allows a Vashaen to zoom in from afar and employ all manner of lethal attacks, from the wicked curved spurs on their heels that swing down like a sixth toe, to their expansive and deadly magic.

Unlike the Vashaen’s natural ability to hide their wings, however, this is not something all of them can do. All Vashaens naturally develop the ability to magically displace or ‘retract’ their wings, usually around puberty, as this ability is a holdover from their Eridanus ancestors. This is a part of their personal magic and as naturally a part of their pubescence as growing more body hair is for us humans. Some have explored this magical pocket enough to conceal weapons and other things in there, though at some degree of risk to their wings. Uçan, however, is not easily achieved and takes many, many years of training and a large, complex web of spellwork and magical energies to achieve. Some are naturally better at learning it than others, and some have more of a talent for the transformation itself. These are known as Narsal, a term given to those who have enough mastery to make almost elegant a less-than-pleasant-to-witness process.

For the most part, transforming between normal form and Uçan requires several minutes of meditation before the Vashaen slowly begins to develop minor changes in physiology, such as their spine lengthening and their wings growing larger. There might be a moment where they maintain this (or they might skip this step entirely) before the explosion, which is exactly that; an explosion. Their form bursts outwards from their magical core into ribbons and tendrils of flesh (exposing muscles, ligaments, bones and organs, now in unraveled slices) before sucking back inwards into the new Uçan shape. While it isn’t painful for the Vashaen if done correctly, it’s not at all pleasant to watch. The transformation back to normal, bipedal form is lumpy and bubbly and disturbing, but does not involve exploding skin ribbons.

Some Narsal have exquisite degrees of control over the transformation process; for example, Sanar Saranova del'Ryelle was one of the most talented Narsal around. She was able to remove the explosion aspect of the transformation entirely and simply shift fluidly and almost beautifully from one form to another, even in mid-run, which was immensely impressive and very difficult. She had previously trained under one of the greatest Vashaen şamans, which was partly how she learned such mastery of the process. Luçien, being the product of generations of royals who were required to surpass their parents and predecessors by a wide margin, retained the exploding, but his explosions were more constrained, elegant, and artistic, and generated an almost lightning-like effect which he eventually learned to utilize as an attack, making his transformation just as dangerous to nearby enemies as the final form. Griezra, as their son, had a mastery of Uçan never seen since, developed from years of practice under the oldest and strongest şaman alive, and from his heritage. He was able to localize the transformation in such a way that it would start wherever he chose it to and pass over his body, bypassing the first step of meditation and minor changes completely and going straight into a mixture of both parents’ unique techniques. He was able to execute the transformation in a matter of seconds, and continue to switch back and forth rapid-fire, something that neither parent could do, which lead to him appearing to change shape in a flash of light repeatedly. He also eventually learned to pull off the transformation in mid-flight, which was unheard of.

Inexperienced Vashaens first venturing into learning Uçan were advised to start naked or in tight clothing they didn’t care about, as any outfits they wore could be destroyed or, worst case scenario, catch on their exploding self and wind up integrated in their skin, though this only happened once in all of Uçan history. Experienced Vashaen would eventually learn to integrate their armor or clothing into the transformation without destroying it, hence Luçien wearing armor in this picture. And in fact plenty of armor and military gear was built and enchanted to easily shift with the wearer. Sanar preferred to go naked in Uçan form, as Vashaens lack most of the scruples humans have about nudity; in the Uçan form the extremely fine hairs on the body of a Vashaen thicken until they are more akin to extremely fine fur, and they develop manes on their elongated necks that are more obvious in females, and serve much the same purpose as feathers in birds. In Uçan the breasts are also significantly reduced in size (they’d just get in the way and reduce aerodynamics) and subsequently covered in both mane and fur, as are the genitals in males and females alike. Luçien and Griezra both preferred to transform with their armor, even though it took more concentration, although for very different reasons.
