OPENING DAY

I would make that title twice as big if I could. (Maybe I can? I don’t really know how this works...) This is the first opening day in two years that we can really celebrate because we can be there. At the game. In person. Because 2020 was 2020. 

Opening Day 2019 was...well honestly, I don’t really remember the details. I have been to almost every opening day since Target Field opened in 2010 (missing only one because of a bestie’s wedding - you’re welcome Lindsey), and many at the Dome before that. 2018 ended unceremoniously, so while I was really excited for 2019 (NELSOOOOOOON CRUUUUUUUUUUZ), my hope was that our games would matter in September. Not the biggest wish to start a season. I know we won, because I have pictures and videos on my phone from that day. I know it wasn’t too cold, because one of those pictures is of a guy eating an ice cream cone unironically. (Yes, there are Twins fans who have eaten ice cream ironically in early season games.) I also know we played the Cleveland baseball team because a picture of the scorecard I have says so. (Picture evidence below.) 

So now we’re here, 2021 and I will likely remember Opening Day this year a bit better. Of course, our HOME opener is next Thursday so that’s the day I plan to remember. 

Today, the Twins started on the road and we lost. AND OH MY GOSH IT HURTS AND WILL WE BE GOOD THIS YEAR MY EXPECTATIONS WERE SO HIGH WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN I DON’T WANT TO BE A WILD CARD TEAM OR WORSE I DON’T WANT TO NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS! And why do I put myself through this every year? I want to care, but can I care just a little less? Yeah, no. The answer is no. I give my whole heart to this team every year. 

So yeah, I tend to overreact and second guess all my life choices when things don’t turn out the first few days of the season. That doesn’t change. The other thing that doesn’t change, I LOVE my Twins. Always have, always will. 

Happy Opening Day to those who celebrate. This is a great day, regardless of how your team did. Baseball is back. We get to be out there with our boys of summer this year. We lived through a year without getting to cheer in person, a year of only 60 games, no All-Star Game, neutral site playoffs and World Series, and we came out the other side. Enjoy all this year has to offer, cheer your hearts out (with masks on), don’t take a second of it for granted.

Field of Dreams-1989

Few understand the game of baseball. Some don't even want to begin to try. For of us that are lucky, we count down the days till days that never end and nights of sitting either in the stadium or around our tv's. There is something about a ballpark, the smells, the sounds, the drama of waiting with bated breath on the outcome of a 3-2 pitch count.  

The film Field of Dreams is based on a book by WP. Kinsella called Shoeless Joe. Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, Kathy Madigan, & Burt Lancaster in his last film role.  An Iowa corn farmer, hearing voices interprets them as a command to build a baseball diamond in fields, and when he does The Chicago Black Sox team and other visitors show up.  

I have made watching this film either around or on Opening Day of Baseball a tradition. I remember the first time my father made me watch this film with him, I was either 10-11, at this time I have only watched The Sandlot & Little Big League. Field of Dreams brought the game of baseball to a whole new level for me. Since the first time I watched this film, I have read Shoeless  Joe, and the book has become one of my favorites.

I could give you all the quotes, all the reasons why Field of Dreams is the film that can provide the perfect backdrop for the season of spring. But instead I will just leave with this clip:
