Hello I’ve not stopped thinking about Tain Hu once in the past two days. I had to color this with my fingers because I forgor my apple pencil

The thing about The Traitor Baru Cormorant that makes me absolutely ill is that not once did Baru stop to think that overthrowing the masquerade was possible. Not once did she consider that if they had gotten this far, they could go further. Even as she made a puppet of every person she met, even as she raised all of Aurdwynn in rebellion, it did not occur to her that they could win. The schooling, the brainwashing- how many times did she catch herself thinking of herself, her own people as Unhygienic? The belief that the empire was inevitable and that the old, uncivilised ways were not enough to overthrow it surely originated in this schooling and brainwashing, in that small school on Taranoke. It was Cairdine Farrier’s greatest accomplishment to make Baru believe in this inevitability; after all, it made her the council’s greatest weapon. The fact that she was so smart, so powerful and smart, and never realised that she had slowly absorbed convictions that were not her own is excellent tragedy.
