Something came to me while reading your PactOfIcen'Fire meta, did someone thought to compare Jace and Sara to Rhaegar and Lyanna? I haven't read many things about Jace and Sara tbh so if they did I'm sorry for repeating it 😅
And not only that but i couldn't ignore but note that Serena and Edric..don't we have an Edric in the main books who's a bastard? I think is intentional to have named him like the Edric Storm in the main series
I'm so sorry anon, I meant to answer this like a straight month ago but tumblr glitched and didn't post it and I didn't even realize :((((
ANYWAYS. I have seen people compare them in the past wrt the pact, yes! there’s two comparisons here that are made between the two couples. there's the argument that jon himself fulfills the pact because he’s the son of a targaryen prince (rhaegar/jacaerys) and a stark daughter (lyanna/sara), and I’ve seen people refer to jace/sara as a proto rhael/ya. then there's the other comparison, where it's pointed out the pact is about a targaryen fostering at winterfell, not just wedding a stark. if you search “rhaegar pact” or "jacaerys lyanna" (search, not a specific tag, fyi) you’ll get all sorts of fun thoughts, but some of my faves are stumpy and starkcontrasts.
I do think there's a lot of parallels and anti parallels between the two couples, and I think those parallels are mmeant to catch our attention while the anti parallels are meant to make us think a little deeper about the context surrounding both couples. I'm bulletting this because it helps me organize my thoughts more clearly.
Similarities between Jacaerys/Sara and Rhaegar/Lyanna:
both couples expect to have a daughter - he daughter of Jacaerys and Sara was supposed to marry Edric Stark in order to tie the houses together, and Rhaegar expected Lyanna to have a daughter not a son (Visenya Snow truthers rise)
a kind of, "oh those crazy kids" vibe from both couples - Rhaegar and Jacaerys both spurning another woman (Elia/Baela) for a Stark maiden and eloping with her
Rhaegar and Jacaerys have minimal input in the wars they are involved in- Jacaerys because he dies early on and Rhaegar because he spends most of the war holed up at the Tower of Joy
Lyanna and Jacaerys are around the same age when their lives get upended - both are only 16 when they die. Very notable to me that Jon Snow is also only 16 when he "dies" in ADWD
Both Baela and Elia are quite beloved by their Houses. You could write pages of meta about Elia's effect on the plot and meanwhile Baela is her father's favorite, one of the last dragon riders, one of the only dragon riders to hit the ground with her dragon and live to tell the story (even if Aegon hadn't been murdered, it seems likely his injuries would have eventually killed him. man is fucked up by his burns and legs, whereas Baela recovers comparitively quickly), marries the heir to House Velaryon, and remains a staple at her half brothers courts for a very long time. AND both women experience infidelity in their marriages - not just the Jacaerys/Sara thing, but Alyn's affairs!
Mysteries surrounding the endings of these relationships - there's the obvious r+l=j thing and the fact that no one knows what the hell Rhaegar was up to during most of the war, but there's also the mystery surrounding Vermax laying a clutch of dragon eggs in the crypts of Winterfell and the baby metaphor here that Jacaerys stays long enough to leave a "child" with Sara just as Rhaegar stays long enough to leave a child with Lyanna.
Differences between Jacaerys/Sara and Rhaegar/Lyanna
the JS daughter is meant to solidify an alliance between the Targaryens/Iron Throne and the Starks/North, while Rhaegar is not interested in making an alliance, he is interested in his prophecy and his third head of the dragon
I think it's very relevant here that Jon is the same age as his mother and Jacaerys in ADWD - this is, imo, the key here that Jon does not fulfill the pact with his birth, but will be involved in the pact himself
Jacaerys and Baela are not actually married when he elopes with Sara Snow, while Rhaegar is not just married but has children with Elia
Mysterious surrounding the ending of the relationships - this goes in differences too because there is in fact a difference between an egg and a literal baby, lmao. This seems to me a pretty clear r+l=j hint, that jacaerys/vermax leaves a ~secret dragon~ with the starks, and jon is a secret dragon that Ned brings to Winterfell
What the hell does all of this mean? Well, I mean, your guess is as good as mine anon, lmao, but EYE think JS is meant to be another r+l=j hint, possibly a hint about the ultimate fate of dany's three dragons (don't ask me what, i have no idea), and an indicator for what jon's ultimate fate is - not as another Jacaerys/Rhaegar parallel but instead serving as the stand in for Jacaerys and Sara's daughter, who fosters at Winterfell and marries the Stark Heir.
Now to the second part!! Edric is a fairly common name but I have always wondered about comparisons between Edric’s so you’re not alone there!! I had originally wondered if Edric Storm and Edric Dayne had perhaps been meant to interact at some point and have larger roles, bc both touch on legitimacy issues (little Ned Dayne repeats the Wylla lie to Arya) and they both feel kinda set up to have had bigger story lines and are relatively isolated at the end of asos the way the starks are (to let them age). There’s actually lots of theories about little Ned Dayne specifically and his relationship with Arya, Ashara, and how he’s connected to the Tower of Joy storyline, and his connection to all that, plus his name connection to Edric Storm AND Serena's Edrics IS a fun one. It could mean nothing predictions wise, just George writing on a pattern. I recommend this meta here for some Targaryen naming patterns and how Rhaegar fits into all the typically feminine Rhae names. I think this is something similar to that - if an Edric shows up, it means the succession is about to involve a lot of bastards and usurpation and mystery!
Here's a clip of the Stark Family Tree, for the visual learners:
The main weird thing about this part of the timeline (besides Rickon's daughters being usurped, #JusticeForSansaAndSerena) is The Edric Of It All. Rickon dies before Cregan, and instead of Winterfell passing to Sansa, it passes to the next son, Jonnel (exactly the way the Aemon, Rhaenys, and Baelon situation goes). But when Jonnel dies without issue, Winterfell skips over Edric and Serena's children, because Edric died before Jonnel, and goes straight to Barthogan, then Brandon and his son Rodwell. This despite the fact that Serena and Edric have two sons of their own: Cregard and Torrhen (and aren't those some incredibly pointed names, just like Aemon naming Rhaenys after a conqueror!). I think when Sansa died, and then Jonnel remarried, Jonnel likely considered Edric his heir. I think what happens here is that Jonnel justifies his usurption by saying that since Rickon died before Cregan, his line should just be skipped entirely and go to the back of succession, and that all the living sons of Cregan should come first. But when Edric dies, Jonnel & probably Barthogan use this justification again by saying that since Edric is dead, his whole line goes to the end, and it goes to the next son, Barthogan. Maybe they even felt a bit guilty about skipping Cregard and Torrhen but they have to stick with this justification in order to keep their own place in the succession ahead of Sansa and Serena, the same way Viserys would never straight up say "the GC was wrong" because it would put his own claim at risk, or the way Aegon III is never able to change the line to say he descends from Rhaenyra because it would piss off the greens. So you have, in a strange way, Edric being usurped by his own brothers, just as Sansa and Serena are usurped (and maybe forcibly married) by their own uncles.
What's even more fun here, in addition to all the nonsense surrounding succession, a JS couple, and an Edric is that like I said, we have Edric Storm tied to legitimacy, Edric Dayne tied to the Tower of Joy plot, and...Edric Stark's brother, Brandon, the child of Lynara Stark who finally has kids who inherit, has a bastard of his own, Lonnel Snow! Just a coincidence, and George writing on a pattern? Again, yeah, maybe, probably, but there is some chatter regarding both Lonnel and Edric's possible descendants including that perhaps House Cassel is a descendants house of one of the two. idk but it's interesting!!

This is soooo specific and probably weird, but maybe Arrana and Aregelle Stark are loosely named after their grandparents Arra Norrey, and I realize this is a stretch but Rickon -> Aregelle? It makes sense (sort of) in my head but idk...
It’s not weird; it would make sense that, in a succession crisis with multiple branches of descent from Cregan Stark, that Serena might want to emphasize her children’s descent from the senior branch (from his first wife Arra Norrey and her only child, Rickon) and thus by Northern law the true heirs of Winterfell. The Ar- prefix is fairly common among northern names: Artos, Arya, Arnolf, Arthor, Arra, Arrana, Aregelle, and Arsa are examples (5/8 of them female names, though I speculate it’s because GRRM wanted Arya Stark to have a strong connection to her female ancestors), so could be a coincidence, though I like your idea about it being an intentional variant, because Serena’s son Cregard’s name is a unique variant on Cregan, her grandfather. Torrhen is also a common Northern name, but among the Starks only seems to be for the King Who Knelt, which, if you consider the name similarities between Aregelle and Argella Durrandon the last Storm Queen, could be for “last” rulers usurped/demoted to being lords or consorts of lands they were monarchs of; again, it could be related to the succession crisis, because despite being from the senior branch of Cregan on their mother’s side and from an older brother on their father’s side, none of Serena’s children inherited Winterfell (and those we know who married, the daughters, wed loyal Northern vassals, the Umbers and Cerwyns), with the lordship going first to their paternal uncle Barthogan and then his younger brother Brandon. Maybe Brandon naming his only daughter “Arsa” was a way to reconcile with Serena’s descendants, or just a coincidence.

Thoughts/opinions on cregan stark
contains multitudes. agreed to send thousands of men to die in a war for a man he knew for two weeks. counted beets for a year and didn’t do anything until the last minute to swipe a victory while everyone else was on fire. tried to have grandpa corlys executed just because he committed treason again. Tried to stop Baela from going outside. Had 10 children but waited until the last one to name them Brandon. There was a Barthogan and a Jonnel before Brandon Stark. Loved misogynistic succession crises so much he engineered his own by letting his only son at the time go and die doing imperialism in dorne leaving him with two granddaughter-heirs and then had 4 more sons with his third wife what could go wrong. overall 4/10 kind of sucked but i know all the other problematic beet-counting bisexuals of house stark call him mother
#was the pact of ice and fire creganjace nedbert foreshadowing. discuss#it has nothing to do with rhaegar and lyanna because i say so

I apologize if this is a question you've already answered. Your posts about the "She-Wolves of Winterfell" are really interesting and that's an ASOIAF historical story I find really interesting. For some reason I had thought that Serena was older than Sansa, but apparently not. I am probably missing something obvious, but was wondering if you have any theories about Serena marrying Edric rather than Barthogan or Brandon? I know that Sansa and Serena were deliberately prevented from ruling Winterfell in their own right, but it seemed like a deliberate effort to exclude them even from being the line that the ruling Starks descend from? I feel like I'm maybe off the mark though?
For one, there seems to be some lack of clarity, at least for now, on the birth order of Rickon Stark's daughters. While TWOIAF's Stark family tree lists Serena as the elder sister and Sansa as the younger, Elio Garcia made a comment on Discord (reproduced on the Westeros.org forums) that per GRRM's own notes, Sansa was the elder and Serena the younger. This would not be the first time later volumes edited or changed established dynastic details, of course - indeed, F&B eliminated one of Jaehaerys and Alysanne's sons, introduced a new daughter, and reshuffled the birth order of their other children - and so I will not at all be surprised if, say, whatever "The She-Wolves of Winterfell" ends up being called confirms that Sansa was really the elder of the two daughters of Rickon.
Anyway, the marriages of Rickon's daughters are a largely (as yet) unexplained but very intriguing detail in the history of the Stark family. If Sansa really were the elder (and assuming that the birth order of Cregan's sons by Lynara will not change), then theirs would have been the marriage of the most senior male-line descendant of Cregan and the eldest surviving son of Cregan, a powerful combination of dynastic claims. Did Cregan and/or anyone else involved in making the marriage arrange just such a match because he (or, again, anyone else involved) envisioned Sansa and Jonnel as ruling as joint lord and lady, rather than one spouse subservient to the other? Did whoever arranged this match want to subsume Sansa's claim into Jonnel's - keeping her as only the future Lord Jonnel's consort rather than allowing her to press forward her own claim (with her own aristocratic husband, perhaps, to back her)? Or just the opposite - did the architect(s) of this union believe that Sansa should be the ruling Lady of Winterfell someday and wish to prevent Cregan's eldest surviving son from challenging her claim to the high seat of the Starks? Any or none of the above might have been the explanation for the marriage, but until and unless we learn more about the times and players involved, these and many other questions remain outstanding (and really, I could probably think of a thousand more possibilities of what any of the individuals involved might have been thinking, but that's a deep rabbit hole for as yet so little information).
As for Serena and Edric, their marriage is even more vague and subject to speculation. To cite Elio Gracia again, he asserts that Serena was first married to Jon Umber and then to Edric Stark. There is no telling when either of these marriages (much less specifically the one with Edric) occurred, and still less what might have driven such a union. Perhaps their marriage was an attempt to breed Rickon's line back into the ruling Stark dynasty, with Jonnel have no son by either Sansa or his second wife, Robyn Ryswell; as Edric would be Jonnel's heir presumptive for lack of (male) issue on the latter's part, maybe Serena was encouraged/arranged/forced to marry Edric in order to consolidate potentially warring claims into a dynastically suitable (and, again, presumably male) child. Perhaps it was an attempt by Edric to assert himself and/or his wife against elder brother Jonnel (especially if Sansa had already died), by claiming that Serena was the rightful heiress to Winterfell and Jonnel a usurper. Perhaps it arose from reluctance to have Serena marrying a non-Stark northern aristocrat and making a play for Winterfell against Cregan's sons. Perhaps it was genuinely a love match (especially since we have no sense of the relative ages of Cregan's sons and Rickon's daughters, making it entirely possible for them to have been of an age and raised together). Again, any or none of these suggestions might provide any explanation - we'll just have to wait for whatever "The She-Wolves of Winterfell" ends up being called, Fire and Blood Volume 2, and/or maybe details hinted at in TWOW (especially to the extent the Stark reunion at Winterfell was supposed to parallel or echo the events of "The She-Wolves of Winterfell").

How did house stark get a succession crisis of their own because of cregan?
Take a gander at his family tree. He has 1 son by his first wife, Arra Norey: his heir, Rickon.
He has 4 daughters with Alysanne Blackwood.
He has several other children with his third wife, Lynara Stark: Jonnel, Edric, Lyanna, Barthogan and Brandon.
Rickon marries and has daughters Sansa and Serena, Cregan's granddaughters. Rickon dies before his father. By rights, Winterfell should go to Sansa.
Does it? No. Winterfell goes to his second son, Jonnel (by Lynara Stark), who marries Sansa to cannibalize her claim. Edric marries Serena for the same reason, so that, in case Jonnel died, he'd get Winterfell.
It continues with Edric's children and it's a mess. Winterfell somehow gets passed down to the last son, Brandon.

W&B: Cregan seems more of an opportunistic lord than his father. Rickon seems more of the lord who would keep his word with Rhaenyra. That’s why Jace had to offer house Stark a marriage to get them on his side.
Cregan only had daughters as well, if he married Celia that would be an interesting point. House stark only gets lady’s if there is no other male Stark. Celia would absolutely force the north to accept her girl as lady of the house.
Cregan had a sons named Rickon, Jonnel, Edric, Barthogan (feel bad for that kid), and Brandon.
And the pact was that Jace’s daughter (when he had one) would foster in the North and eventually marry Rickon.
I think it has less to do with being opportunistic and more to do with Cregan being uninterested in the south.

Yeah so anyways now I need to come up with a bunch of Stark names and lemme go look at Canon and see how many girl duaghters Cregan had and how many sons he had and their names. And I'm gonna put it here :
Barthogan (I like the nickname Bart and also it gives me 'Daemon Targaryen will not approve and make fun of your child's name' vibes)
Saera (after Jace because Jacaera would be the female form of Jacaerys)
Aerea/Arya (Aemma likes the name Aerea, but she wants her children - while she wants them to have traditional Targaryen names... she knows they are Starks as well, and she would not wish to give them names of people who had sad ends. So she names her daughter Arya)
Artem (I like the name Artemis and Artem would be a cute boy Stark name - either Artem or something along those vibes)
Brannon Stark/Brennan Stark (imagine twins with these names oh my)
Torrhen (you cannot change my mind that Aemma would not name her son this)
Aemon (oh but she always loved the name Aemon as a child... she would have named a son with Aemon this - commemorative of both Aemond and Daemon... but now, no, the memory and pain these two people brought her... it is a thing she does not wish to remember.)
Margaret (was apparently a name of a Karstark that was Cregan's uncle Bennard's wife so I like the name Maggie or Maegelle - or Maegara it sounds very Targaryen-esque but the Marge/Maggie gives me major Stark/Northern vibes)
Marys is a nice name. (Wanted something with "rys" in it for Viserys yeah)
Aeron Stark (a pretty name from Aerion)
Osferth is nice.
Osric too.
Well fuck, now I have too many names and not enough characters. Fuck.
Well double fuck now because I went back and highlighted all the names I liked. And now I have too many names that I like.
Oh well, i suppose I'll just have to give some of these names to Lucie and Aegon iii for their kids
k so because the great war ideas and aemma velaryon has made me depressed,
im gonna go and make up characters and children of aemma and cregan and make them bittersweet for aemma to look at but still
she made it
she is alive
and her family
they are dead
but they are reborn

THE WIDOWS OF WINTERFELL: A True Telling of the Trials and Tribulations of Sansa & Serena Manderly Stark, as written by Coryanne Martell of Bear Island
Though the First Men, the Andals, and most of the Valyrians hold with the tradition that a daughter must always come before an uncle in matters of succession, the truth of this is that inheritance does not always - or even usually - follow such strict traditions. There are variances not only between the kingdoms that make up Westeros, but throughout the world as to whether a Lord or King's wealth and role may pass to a son, daughter, brother, sister, or even a relative further removed. These variances amongst traditions include the Iron Throne itself, where no woman nor man descended from a woman has ever sat, the Dornish and their Rhoynar tradition of age based succession - and, more recently, the North, which holds a similar age based succession tradition.
This tradition traces its origins to the succession crisis of Winterfell in the year 175 AC when a short - but tense - stand off occurred between Sansa Stark and her younger uncle, Jonnel Stark. Sansa, being the daughter of Jonnel's older brother, would have come first when holding to traditional succession laws, as would her sister Serena. The issue was seemingly resolved by the marriage of both sisters to their eldest uncles, Jonnel and Edric, with Jonnel being named Lord of Winterfell and Sansa his lady. In truth, the Sisters Stark had only begun their war of words against their young uncles.
Much of our knowledge of that time comes from the account of the succession crisis set down by Torrhen Stark and edited several decades later by Maester Walys, as well as the many letters sent to close friends while they plotted and planned - and the grumblings of their detractors in the North as well as the South. The judgement of their actions is varied; some called the Sisters Stark overreaching tyrants, more interested in their own power than having any true interest in what they called the rights of heiresses. Those that loved the sisters believed Sansa to have as tender a heart as any woman but with the cold pragmatism of the old Kings of Winter, and Serena an intellect to rival a Grand Maester that she hid behind charm and courtesy. Whatever the judgement of their actions, their impact on Northern succession law cannot be mistaken.
SOME NOTES HERE
The names are NOT listed in age order or the graphic doesn't work. Sue me!!!
My characterization for Jonnel, Edric, Barthogan, and Brandon is based off the very vague idea that the North “lamented” the loss of Rickard because the rule of his sons was “troubled” as they were just, not that good at being Lord of Winterfell, except in this version Sansa and Serena get frustrated with that and just refuse to let go of the North when Jonnel dies, and make their beef the North’s problem by going “actually succession is strictly age and not gender based now, new rule.”
read more here, this idea came from me trying to justify absolute primogeniture being recent in the North, for maximum drama between the Starklings and also to give Ned a heart attack.
This timeline is held together mostly on vibes lksjfd I might update the concept as I go along but I got tired of trying to piece together the ages and death dates.
I genuinely have like a novella worth of F&B style lore to back all of this up. Here is only a tiny little bit of it-
Cregan sends Sansa to the Maidenvault to be a companion to Elaena Targaryen. She is one of very few Northern girls sent, and likely (definitely) sent to ensure she could not develop proper support in Winterfell to rival Cregan's sons.
She is recalled to Winterfell once Baelor the Blessed dies, because Cregan Does Not Fuck With Viserys Like That, but Cregan hems and haws about her marriage match until the day he dies.
After she realizes Jonnel intends to cut Serena/Cregard out of the line of succession, she starts building alliances not just in the North but in the South as well. Elaena and Alyssa (one of Rhaena's daughters, Alyssa Hightower, because it is the funniest name!) help her find matches for Cregard, Aregelle, and Aranna that come with influence, money, and a small household ready to move into Winterfell and loyal only to Sansa and Serena.
Cregard marries a northerner, Robyn Ryswell, to gain the Ryswells as an ally. More than that, it was important to Sansa that Cregard marry a Northerner, because some talk about them being ~poisoned by Southron ambitions~ bc she was raised in the Capital.
Torrhen, Cregard's twin brother, marries Rhaella Hightower, or what Alyssa, Elaena, and Sansa refer to as Rhaena and Garmund's Oops Baby. Younger than her sisters by over a decade, Rhaella is doted on, and comes north with a large household and a small fortune.
Aranna is the first match Elaena and Sansa set up though it's not for politics (it happens before Edric dies) but because of their fondness for each other - Elaena's son, Jon Waters, with Serena's oldest girl. I know there’s the bastard thing but executive decisioning that Jonnel and Edric are excited about it - they grew up hearing all sorts of stories about Alyn Velaryon and they can't help but think it's both very cool and potentially useful to have his bastard son with a Targaryen princess in Winterfell.
Aregelle's husband, Garin Martell, is not from the direct line of the Martells aka a brother to Myriah and Maron. He is however, part of the household sent to protect Myriah when she comes North to marry Daeron in 169, as a squire. Elaena suggests the match and also hints at the idea that she wants a Dornish influence in the North to help Sansa and Garin is like "say no more, that's hilarious."
The match between Lyanna and Galeo Cassel is made by Serena. Galeo Cassel was a merchant from Braavos who made his home in winter town, finding he much enjoyed the cold weather and the odd, serious ways of the Northerners. He becomes a close friend of Serena's while Sansa is in the South, and is rewarded with a marriage match, when he designs a sigil - he tells everyone who will listen that the single wolf is Cregan, the two wolves are Sansa & Serena, the three wolves are him, Lyanna, and his brother, and the four wolves are their children (who haven't been born yet). Being the richest man in winter town, his support and fondness for the girls becomes important to their goals. Yes I worked in an origin story for House Cassel.
Sansa reaches out to every aunt she has with the promise of fantastic matches for all their kids if they back her claim against Barthogan. I simply did NOT have the room for all of the kids, hahahaha, but this is how she gets the Norreys, Umbers, Ryswells, and Blackwoods on her side - all of a sudden, they get to jump the line over her uncles AND they’re offloading their spare kids into other people’s castles. In return, she gets second son Leo Blackwood's own son, Ronnet, a sweet match with a Tully, and they marry back into the family a generation later. She gets the Ryswells a sweet match as well with Cregard, obviously, and will get the Umbers one soon (hold that thought).
Alysanne Stark, daughter of Torrhen and Rhaella Hightower, is their oldest child. She, Edrick, and Addam and Elaena are all close, growing up in Winterfell together. Alysanne, who married Jason Blackwood, is given some land in the Wolfswood to settle, and the two eventually form their own cadet house, at first called House Stark of the WolfsWood but eventually it is shortened to Starkwood. Elaena Soranys, a name she later takes on to rid herself of the taint of bastardry, marries the heir to House Umber. Olyvar marries the heir to House Mormont, Janna, and his second born child - they have four daughters in total - establishes House Martell of Bear Island.
I haven’t decided if it’s more likely that the Martells of Bear Island are just, this random Martell cadet branch in the North that by present day just doesn’t look Dornish at all and has no relationship to Dorne or the main Martell branch, but kept the Martell name, OR if Bear Island is like, just a Little multicultural because the presence of its original Dornish founding member is enough to draw the presence of more Dornish people to Bear Island. I was picturing kinda like the Marches, where you can see through the names and marriages a bit of a mixing of the two dominant cultures there, like a lil sprinkling of southron influence seeping through.
I still wanted to keep the concept of a succession crisis when Dunk and Egg get to the North SO! Brandon still marries Alys Karstark - a match Sansa fights against loudly - and Beron still marries Lorra Royce and has several children (i stole some of them for other characters though). Cregard dies before his mother and Serena, who is old, frail, and sickly, rules in name alone when Sansa finally passes - the rule of Winterfell is mostly in the hands of her grandson, Edrick. He marries a Manderly, and they have one child that lives to adulthood, Arsa, though she has a number of cousins all eager to be her favorite - including, eventually, her cousin William.
After William’s wife, Gillian’s Glover, dies in the birthing bed, Arsa sends for a nursemaid to care for his son, Brandon. Though Brandon dies soon after the nursemaid, Nan, gets to Winterfell, a grieving William is touched by his cousin’s care.
When Sansa dies, and Edrick is fatally wounded not long after, Dunk and Egg walk into a succession crisis. While several first born daughters have inherited since Sansa and Serena's changes - Janna Mormont, Corlynne Cerwyn, Arya Flint, and Serena Hornwood - the very short rule of Edrick and the premature death of Cregard has everyone on edge about yet another ruling Lady of Winterfell. As Edrick lay dying, Westeros’ nosiest squire and most upon knight roll up to the castle, curious as to why every single Stark is suddenly at Winterfell.
Also, here are the invented sigils, the Mormont Martell words are not serious but I imagine their words are similarly metal:

Lord Jonnel Stark, nicknamed the One-Eyed, was head of House Stark and, as such, Lord of Winterfell and Guardian of the North.
He was the first child of Lord Cregan Stark and his third wife, Lady Lynara Stark. He took in marriage his niece, Sansa Stark, and later Robyn Ryswell. He had no children with any, so he was succeeded by his brother Barthogan as Lord of Winterfell.
He is buried in the crypts of Winterfell. Little is known about him, although it is mentioned that he was one-eyed.

“One-eyed Lord Jonnel, Lord Barth and Lord Brandon and Lord Cregan who had fought the Dragonknight.”
…Lord Barth? Like in Septon Barth? 👀 Is that some material for the High Septon Rickon prayer circle I’m seeing there?!
(Safely ensconced between older brothers Jon and Bran with… I’m going to guess older sister Arya the Dragonslayer, possibly shared with Sansa cleaning up the political mess after the second dance.)
Wait! Come back! It's an emergency!
I'm slow, you have to help me. Do you mean Barthogan Stark? Is that Lord Barth? Was he a Septon!?!
HELP ME.

The Coming War for the North, Part 2: The Lost Wolves
In part 1, I talked about the coming battle of ice with Stannis fighting against the Boltons to take Winterfell. I discussed the situation there, the pink letter, and briefly speculated what the battle of ice will entail and who I thought would emerge victorious. If you read that, you know I argued Stannis would lose and the true battle for the North would be fought by Jon against Ramsay. In part 2, I'll dive into setting up the different factions left in the North (and beyond!) that I think will be integral to the northern storyline in TWOW.
A Trip to Skagos
Last we saw of Davos, he was not executed by Wyman Manderly, and Lord Manderly has sent him to retrieve Rickon from Skagos. Davos in TWOW is definitely going to be fun to read, as Skagos sounds like a very sinister place (or is it all that sinister?) and seeing Rickon again should be interesting. At the beginning of ADWD Davos was sent to parley with the Manderlys by Stannis, but the Manderlys imprisoned him, and per what we hear from in AFFC, executed him.
Of course, they didn't, and instead put him into the Wolf's Den, an ancient castle that is now used as a prison. Then Davos is freed and meets with Wyman in private, with Robett Glover in attendance, who say they are not with the Boltons, and were merely playing up the ruse so that Wyman's son Wylis would be returned safely without a hint of disloyalty towards the Lannisters. Instead, they are plotting revenge against the Red Wedding, and inform Davos that they found Wex Pyke, Theon's mute squire, who eventually revealed that Rickon has gone to Skagos. Wyman will support Stannis if Davos successfully brings Rickon back.
We don't know a lot about Skagos, and the little we do know paints it as a very sinister, savage place. They are rumoured to practice human sacrifice to the weirwoods and cannibalism in winter, and luring passing ships with false lights, more like tribes of raiders not too dissimilar to wildlings. They also rose in rebellion against the Starks during the reign of King Daeron II, which lasted years and claimed the lives of thousands, Lord Barthogan Stark among them, before it was finally put down. Also they ride unicorns, one horned shaggy goats.
I'm not sure what Skagos will ultimately be like, but I think it's probably going to be a weird mix of wildlings and northmen. There is also the question of their relationship with both. The northmen hate them and view them as savages, and they are built up as sinister people, but perhaps they only play it up in order to be left alone. Their historical connection to the North isn't very positive, so they might enjoy being isolated from the rest of the North, so long as they aren't disturbed.
That said, it is interesting that Osha chose Skagos to hide with Rickon. Anywhere in the North is dangerous for a loose wildling and a young Stark to be in... except Skagos, apparently. Do the Skagosi have good relations with the free folk? They seem to live more like the free folk and the island is further north than the rest of the North (bordering on the lands of the Night's Watch & even stretching beyond the Wall). Plus, Osha went there with Rickon to keep him safe, so the idea that the free folk and Skagosi have connections isn't too unikely.
The real question I am wondering is; how is Rickon doing? Last we saw him, he was only 4 years old, wild and untamed. I somewhat subscribe to the theory that the names of the direwolves hint at their future, and while there is a theory that Rickon is a shaggydog story (a long winded, complicated anecdote that goes nowhere), I think Shaggydog more or less foreshadows Rickon's wild nature. There is nobody training his warging abilities, and he was already wild to begin with, and now he's on a remote island in the middle of nowhere, so I only think he's going to grow more and more wild.
And, how are the Skagosi treating Rickon? Do they like him? They don't have good historical connections with the Starks, so they may not like Rickon when they first met him. Maybe they revere him since he is a warg? Or perhaps nobody truly knows who he is, but some kid with a giant wolf who knows lives on the island, and people give him offerings? Since we have little to nothing to go off, we have no idea what exactly Rickon has been up to since his exit from the pages in ACOK.
Regardless, Davos might find himself in a difficult position to convince Rickon to return. He's a complete stranger and nobody is going to trust his agenda, least of all Osha who was tasked with keeping Rickon safe. Given George has "important plans" for Rickon, I doubt Davos will fail to bring Rickon back, but it won't be easy, and probably will take some time.
From there, I see two possible places for Davos to go. While he would be tasked with returning Rickon to White Harbor, there is a possibility that the storms will force him to land in Eastwatch. Rickon could have a reunion with Jon Snow if that is the case, but I tend to favour Rickon being returned to White Harbor and used to rally Manderly and their allies against Ramsay. Wyman tells Davos all the value of having his House as an ally against the Boltons.
"I have been building warships for more than a year. Some you saw, but there are as many more hidden up the White Knife. Even with the losses I have suffered, I still command more heavy horse than any other lord north of the Neck. My walls are strong, and my vaults are full of silver. Oldcastle and Widow's Watch will take their lead from me. My bannermen include a dozen petty lords and a hundred landed knights. I can deliver King Stannis the allegiance of all the lands east of the White Knife, from Widow's Watch and Ramsgate to the Sheepshead Hills and the headwaters of the Broken Branch."
Stannis Baratheon
One thing to note is what Stannis will be doing. Say he, as I think happened, was defeated by the Boltons and faked his death. What is his next move? It's entirely possible that Stannis just retreats to the Nightfort, a location that he intends on sitting at one day, and in his desperation, burns Shireen to wake dragons out of stone (apparently people hate this take but it's a possibility in my mind). However, this isn't to say he is completely out of the game yet.
The Manderlys are open to allying with Stannis (should Davos be successful in retrieving Rickon), and they are part of the army sent in the battle of ice to do battle with Stannis. Could they possibly help fake Stannis's death in battle and have him retreat to a secret location? There is potential foreshadowing for this.
"White Harbor would give me a ready source of supply and a secure base to which I could retreat at need."
Could they have him retreat to the Wolf's Den, an ancient castle turned prison? There is a secret passageway connecting the Wolf's Den to the New Castle that Davos was shown.
While it might just be simpler for Stannis to retreat and die, this story is anything but simple, and I feel George is still having him around for a reason. He did send Justin Massey to Braavos to hire sellswords and sent them to him through Eastwatch (which is how I believe Arya will return to Westeros), so those might come in handy in the future. So while I believe the Starks will be the centre of defeating the Boltons and retaking Winterfell, Stannis could still have a role in this. One idea is that he actually takes the Dreadfort.
While the original idea posed by Arnolf was to merely siege it, and was supposed to undermine Stannis, interrogating Theon would be of some great use, as could the fleet of warships Lord Manderly has been building. Theon once escaped the Dreadfort through a postern gate that is either lightly or not guarded at all, with the help of Kyra, only for this to all be a game devised by Ramsay to hunt them back down. His knowledge of the Dreadfort could prove useful for Stannis to take it, while the Manderly fleet rows up the Weeping Water and lays siege to it.
A Blaze of Boltons
Now it's time to look at the Boltons. Say Roose is successful in holding Winterfell and defeating Stannis, and he gets rid of the Freys and Manderlys. What then? The northern houses are still only tentatively loyal to him, and he knows it. But the danger that poses to him is temporarily dealt with. The true danger was the fact that there was an option to join a new side against the Boltons, but once Stannis defeated, they are back to being all by themselves, knowing the Iron Throne is backing the Boltons and not risking their ire.
However, there is a distinct possibility that the Boltons will still lose support eventually, and by none other than their own hands, specifically Ramsay's. As a psychopath, Ramsay has an enormous ego, and is very concerned about his birthright, hoping he will one day be Warden of the North and Lord of the Dreadfort.
"My lord has a new wife to give him sons." "And won't my bastard love that? Lady Walda is a Frey, and she has a fertile feel to her. I have become oddly fond of my fat little wife. The two before her never made a sound in bed, but this one squeals and shudders. I find that quite endearing. If she pops out sons the way she pops in tarts, the Dreadfort will soon be overrun with Boltons. Ramsay will kill them all, of course. That's for the best. I will not live long enough to see new sons to manhood, and boy lords are the bane of any House. Walda will grieve to see them die, though."
Roose is aware of just how unhinged Ramsay is. He knows Ramsay will be upset if Walda gives birth to a boy, and knows Theon is reporting back to Ramsay. But Roose doesn't really seem to care all that much. Perhaps he would be amused if this did happen. Or perhaps he's just trying to comfort Ramsay to prevent this happening. Regardless, he also knows that Ramsay was responsible for his half-brother Domeric's death.
"Yes, m'lord. Domeric. I … I have heard his name …" "Ramsay killed him. A sickness of the bowels, Maester Uthor says, but I say poison. In the Vale, Domeric had enjoyed the company of Redfort's sons. He wanted a brother by his side, so he rode up the Weeping Water to seek my bastard out. I forbade it, but Domeric was a man grown and thought that he knew better than his father. Now his bones lie beneath the Dreadfort with the bones of his brothers, who died still in the cradle, and I am left with Ramsay. Tell me, my lord … if the kinslayer is accursed, what is a father to do when one son slays another?"
It seems clear that Ramsay's murder of his half-brother Domeric is foreshadowing, not just for the eventual death of Walda's child, but for Roose as well. Ramsay is very close to one day snapping and doing something so horrible that he cannot go back from. And to make it more clear, there is a line at the end of ADWD that I completely overlooked that shows Walda is actually pregnant.
Roose Bolton entered, pale-eyed and yawning, accompanied by his plump and pregnant wife, Fat Walda.
Later Ramsay and Roose are seen arguing, and Walda seems very frightened, but Theon doesn't hear what they say. It's possible they were arguing about Ramsay's inheritance given that Walda is now pregnant (although I think they were more likely arguing about what to do with Stannis). Regardless, I think that Walda giving birth to a boy would drive Ramsay over the edge. Despite him being impulsive and angry, he's still quite capable of covering up what he does. So I think, just as he did with Domeric, he will poison Roose, Walda, and his newborn half-brother, leaving him the only Bolton left and asserting his dominance over the North.
Of course, this is going to have serious consequences for Ramsay, something I will get into in part 3, where I will talk at length about the coming Bastardbowl.

It was believed that the couple would be sterile because of Naerys' great physical weakness, but in 154 a. C., Naerys became pregnant for the first time, giving birth to her first child, Daeron and this birth was a great joy for the marriage which remained very close and Aemon did not separate from his wife when she began to weaken after giving birth. .
The couple continued to have more children, but due to Naerys' poor health, her pregnancies were four or six years apart:
Daeron Targaryen (154 a. C - 220 a. C) was the hand of King Daemon I Targaryen for 18 years being known for his patience, kindness and great intelligence.
He married the Dornish princess, Mariah Martell as a form of peace between Dorne and the iron throne, but despite being a political marriage, both spouses came to love each other and had four sons: Baelor, Aerys, Rhaegel and Maekar, in addition of a woman: Naerys.
Daeron was a great administrator and a great advisor to Prince Daemon who, when he sat on the iron throne, appointed his cousin as the hand of the king. His work as a hand was respected by many, but some names, including his uncle Aegon, did not see well that the prince held the position since they believed that Daeron manipulated his cousin to have the throne in his hands and rumors were created about the bad intentions hand in hand. It is believed that Aegon invented these rumors as he felt a grudge towards Daeron and his brothers as they were the product of love between Naerys and Aemon, Aegon's brothers.
Despite rumors, Daeron continued to be the king's hand, being considered an efficient hand with no monetary ambitions other than serving his king and the Seven Kingdoms.
Daeron suffered great pain when in 202 a. C., his wife, Mariah, died of an abortion at 49 years of age and it is known that Daeron never remarried, nor had lovers and took shelter in his work until almost affecting his physical health until in 207 a. C., he decided to retire from his position by moving away from political intrigues and dedicating his time to reading or caring for his grandchildren. In 217 a. C., Daeron began to suffer from gout attacks quite often and stayed in bed for a couple of weeks in the company of his children and grandchildren, until he died one night before reaching 60 years of age.
Alysanne Targaryen (157 a. C. - 207 a. C.) was Lady of Winterfell by marrying Barthogan Stark and known for being the only daughter of the princes to have political ambitions, as well as being considered the joy of the court in Winterfell
Her marriage to Barthogan was devised by her uncle, Daeron I, to have the North in her favor and in 169 a. C., the commitment of the princess with the heir of Jonnel Stark was made official. In the year 172 a. C., the princess came to the North meeting her fiancé and that same year they were married in the forest of Gods. Not much is known about the relationship between the couple, but it is known that Alysanne was a great political support for her husband being her compared to the queen Alysanne Targaryen being called "Alysanne of the ice". The marriage had three children: Brandon, Brereton and Baltasar Stark known as the three wolves.
Alysanne managed to introduce music, banquets and the arts to Winterfell further encouraging the court, being seen in a bad way by some lords for taking many liberties in the lordship of the North and in politics, but the princess ignored those complaints. It is known that she managed to find good marriages for her sisters-in-law Sarra, Alys, Raya and Mariah Stark with lords of Winterfell, but she promised her son Brereton with her aunt Mariah since it is said that she was the favorite sister-in-law of Alysanne.
The princess was widowed when Barthogan died in 200 from a sword wound during training. Her son, Brandon, became the lord of Winterfell and Alysanne was his main adviser and advisor, this caused numerous envies on the part of his daughter-in-law, Alia Umber. Alysanne Targaryen passed away in 207 a. C., at age 50 after falling down the stairs and breaking his back. She was buried in the crypts of Winterfell with the inscription "Lady Alysanne, Queen of Ice."
Aemon Targaryen (164 a. C.-192 a. C.) known as "The Dragon's Sword" was a member of the Royal Guard from 182 a. C., being the youngest member with 17 years of age. He was known for his dexterity with the sword and the spear being considered a great warrior as well as his father being also called as "Aemon, the young man".
Aemon did not want to marry and have a family so he joined the royal guard, but it is known that he had an affair with a young woman known as "Red Barbara" a woman with hair as red as fire and it is known that with her he had two bastard children, Jaime and Larra who founded a minor house known as " Whitesword ".
This relationship was a great scandal due to Aemon's disloyalty to his oath, this was shameful for Aemon and his parents, but Daeron covered this up by stating that the children of this romance were born before his brother joined the royal guard.
The popularity of the prince was affected by this scandal, he being seen as a disgraced knight and his children as spawns born of that disloyalty. Aemon was disappointed by this and became addicted to alcohol spending his days in the tavern where he drank himself to sleep. It was said that one day before he was 28 years old, he affirmed that his children, Jaime and Larra, were his legitimate heirs, leaving them the silver that he received for being prince of the Seven Kingdoms and being a member of the Royal Guard.
On his birthday Aemon escaped from the castle to go drinking with his friends, but on his return he was assaulted by scavengers and one of them stabbed him in the chest when he tried to take his bag of money from him. Aemon died at the same moment when he was just 28 years old, the death of the young man was a disgrace for the family and especially for his mother, Naerys.
Naerya Targaryen (170 a. C.-211 a. C.) was queen of the Seven Kingdoms by marrying her cousin, Aegon IV Targaryen.
She was considered a delicate, kind and smiling girl, she was as white as her mother, but she had more physical strength to enjoy horse riding, hunting and the bow and arrow. Since she was a child she helped her mother take care of her little sister, Daenerys whom she adored and she also had a good relationship with her brother Daeron despite her age difference.
In the year 178 a. C., Princess Visenya gave birth to a healthy son, Aegon being a great joy for all. Naerya with eight years of age took care of her little nephew along with her cousin with whom she had a great relationship and Visenya declared that she would like her cousin to marry her son. When Daemon and Visenya sat on the iron throne, Daemon agreed to allow his heir to marry Naerya, trusting that she would be the ideal wife for the prince of Dragonstone.
In the year 188 a. C., the princes were married in the Great Septo, Aegon was 10 years old and Naerya 18 years old. The marriage was consumed in 191 a. C., being Naerya pregnant at 21 years of age and she gave birth to her first child, Daemon future Daemon II Targaryen. The marriage was happy and Aegon loved his wife very much with whom he had four more children: Alyssa, Aerion and Rhaenar, but only Aerion died in full adolescence.
In the year 209 a. C., Daemon I passed away that same year and Aegon sat on the throne as Aegon IV Targaryen, being Naerya his consort with 39 years of age. Two years later Naerya contracted winter fevers by staying in bed for a few days until one night in 211 a. C., Naerya passed away at 41 years of age. Aegon was hurt to lose his wife and dressed in black until her death, but two years later he remarried his cousin, Saera, with whom he had three more daughters.
Daenerys Targaryen (172 a. C.-234 a. C.) was the princess consort of Dorne by marrying Prince Maron Martell, the brother of her sister-in-law Mariah Martell.
Daenerys was a young woman just as beautiful as her sisters, she being considered cheerful, sweet, calm and a lover of nature. She was very close to her sister Naerya with whom she continued to be in contact even through letters. In the year 182 a. C., she met Maron Martell, Prince of Dorne and brother of Mariah Martell, wife of Prince Daeron. The princes liked each other and it is known that Daenerys played in the palace gardens with Maron and claimed to marry him when he was older.
In 191 a. C., Daenerys' brother, Aemon, passed away and shortly after her mother, Naerys, passed away and it was a great pain for the whole family, but especially for Daenerys who adored her mother. That same year Daenerys was reunited with Prince Maron who proposed to her and the princess agreed, this engagement was well seen by Daemon I and the wedding took place in 192 a. C., Daenerys was 20 years old and Maron about 25.
Daenerys left for Dorne to be declared Princess Consort and Lady of Sunspear, she was received in a good way as the Dornish people saw her as a symbol of peace after so many rebellions and battles between the Martells and the Targaryens. As a wedding gift, Maron had the Water Gardens built where his descendants could play in hot weather, but Daenerys allowed any child of any social rank to play in the gardens.
The marriage was harmonious and they had a total of ten children, being considered a miracle. Daenerys spent the years taking care of her children, but it is also known that she was very sad since in 211 a. C., her beloved sister, Naerya passed away and when King Aegon IV married her cousin, Saera Targaryen, Daenerys firmly believed that her brothers had murdered her favorite sister of hers. Daenerys survived her other brothers of hers being this very depressing for her and she sheltered from her in her children and her grandchildren whom she loved with her life.
In the year 229 Maron died of natural causes and their son, Dagon became Lord of the Spear of the Sun, Daenerys retired to the Water Gardens after the death of her husband and during her stay she longed for the presence of her husband and his brothers. Daenerys passed away in 234 a. C., at 62 years of age from cardiac arrest while she was sleeping. Her remains rest with Maron's in Dorne.
