do you think arrowverse ships have a lot of drama?

I mean, it depends on the ship, I guess?

But in general, superhero television has sort of veered away from quote-unquote internal drama in romantic relationships, at least the kind that makes a couple very ~will they/won't they~, by nature. Part of it is that I feel like TPTB on superhero shows are less concerned with romance. Like fanboys want to whine about romance, but none of the current CW DCTV shows, for example, had the amount of romantic shake-ups and romantic drama that Smallville did back in the day, especially in its first six seasons or so.

Like ships on Arrow had far more internal relationship drama, and a lot of it indicative of TPTB on that show having zero idea how to write relationships.

I feel like Flash bucked the initial "trend", if you can call it that, because we're like... talking third show down the line, here, lol, but it was very clear it was Westallen from the start, and Barry and Iris weren't operating from a place of initial distance, so to speak. Like in Smallville, Clark and Lana weren't in the same social circles, Clark had a crush on Lana, but he kind of keeps his distance because "high school social hierarchy" (which like never made much sense because most characters were either in love with Lana or Clark or both of them) and also her kryptonite necklace. When Lois came in, the show used Clark and Lana’s ongoing will they/won’t they to also drag out Clois. Regarding Arrow, Laurel and Oliver are exes, and Laurel has a lot of rightful anger towards Oliver for the way he treated her and the fact that he cheated on her with her sister. But Flash, Barry and Iris don't have any so-called walls of inaccessibility. There's the fact that Barry keeps being the Flash a secret and the fact that he's been in love with her his whole life, but hasn't told her, but that doesn't really alter the fact that they're both absolutely committed to like constantly seeing each other and providing love and support to one another. Barry admits to Iris that he's in love with her, and she's still wiping ketchup off his lips, because she's in love with him also, but also because it doesn't change her comfort level with him after she processes what he's confessed.

Anyways, I'm being a bit tangential, but my point is that romantic drama in Flash was very minimal in comparison to the preceding shows that I had mentioned, and because Barry and Iris had such a powerful bond right from the beginning, from a story-telling standpoint, it made sense to just build on that, showcasing the story of their steadfast love. And given that Barry draws his strength and heroism from his love of Iris, portraying their love story as the gold standard is pure excellence. Like Westallen have had minimal internal relationship drama, the vast majority of it being in season 1, when they weren't officially together. When they have disagreements, they always come back to discuss them healthily and apologize and reaffirm their love for each other. Because that's what health couples in love do. So, the way Flash has kept stakes high, so to speak, is to like put them through the trauma of being dimensionally separated or having to find their way back to each other, when they are physically separated from one another. Which is meant to obviously strengthen their love story and demonstrate the lengths that they would go to get back to each other. After awhile though, it gets exhausting... like just let them be happy and stop putting them through the trauma of being physically separated constantly.

But I think the problem with Flash, quite frankly, is TPTB lacks interest in romance, hence why the vast majority of the secondary ships are as... poorly written as they are. Part of me is confused, because Flash has the most steadfast, iconic love story in Westallen, and yet theirs is the only love story that TPTB could write well. And the show is inherently romantic, because of how good Westallen’s love story is and how their love story anchors the show. But also TPTB have simultaneously shortchanged Westallen in terms of scenes that emphasize their romance, especially in the last few seasons. The vow renewal honestly felt like it was a scene from a different season, not season 7, because the last time we had that level of romance, where Westallen are together and happy and celebrating their love, was like... I cannot even remember.

Supergirl had a different approach, where after completely backtracking on James/Kara, who had a nice build-up in season 1, decided to pair Kara with Mon-El, but then backed out of that relationship. There was run-of-the-mill romantic drama for both ships, especially Kara and Mon-El, and simultaneously, time spent on these ships didn't demonstrate commitment in the writers' room. Subsequently, the choice was to just have Kara be single, and honestly, I chalk this up to the SG writers having zero interest in romance, certainly for Kara. Even with Brainy/Nia, while they have some sweet moments, I don't feel the investment in the writers' room to write for them. However, I do think the SG writers really care about Dansen; this season, especially, I feel that they have shown genuine investment in Kelly and Alex's love story, and I think that's why Dansen is essentially the central ship of SG. I think part of it is that Azie and Chyler really spun gold together, and the SG writers wanted to write more for Dansen, which is why we've gotten such a beautiful, consistent love story in Kelly and Alex.

Black Lightning... well, the BL writers did great with Jefferson and Lynn in season 1, in terms of building back their love story, and the electric kiss is still one of my favorite scenes, but then completely dropped the ball on that relationship. The writing for Jefferson and Lynn started focusing on their disagreements, many of which are demonstrative of two people who no longer loved each other. Only to turn around at the last minute and have Jefferson and Lynn get remarried, even though this was not earned, because the writers refused to continue building their love story and instead seemed to showcase the relationship falling apart. I adore Thundergrace, but the BL writers never gave Anissa and Grace their due. They didn't even properly focus on Anissa and Grace during their own wedding reception, and Thundergrace milestones were often rushed. When Anissa and Grace had a disagreement, the writers would not address it, and the next episode, it would be as if nothing had happened. I would argue that the love story that the BL writers showed the most investment in was Khalil and Jen in season 2, but a big reason for that was to be a catalyst for Jen coming into her powers in season 2B. Plus, while they had chemistry, I didn't ship it, because at the time, it wasn't a healthy relationship for Jen. But yeah, I would say the BL writers had a distinct disinterest in writing romance.

So yeah, I mean, I guess the bottom line is that it depends on the show and the ship, but I would say the trend lately is less romantic drama, but also less focus on romance, in general, on superhero television shows.

I so so so wish we heard about the other speedsters more on this show because haters and team flash alike still act like they didn't know a speedster needs a lightning rod to keep them out of the darkness, to keep them balanced, to keep them from getting lost in the speedforce. Jay has Joan. Wally was supposed to have Linda. If Barry had another speedster to talk about that more with, preferably not Thawne, then it'd be a no brainer next time. I've seen complaints about Iris being the key amongst all those scientists. Well, guess what, the smartest scientist in the room told Barry to run towards love. Barry may be everyone's hero, but Iris has always been his hero since childhood. We tried the ASF earlier with all the Welles, but none of that amounted to the love of Barry's lightning rod to create the real speedforce. The science is right there, whether you value Iris as Barry's wife or not.

You pose interesting points anon. On one hand, I think people like looking at Barry and Iris as this unique level of soulmate tying into their “lighting rod connection”. But looking at the whole thing through a sci-fi lends does make it feel more concrete than uniquely emotional. If they did highlight other speedsters connections to love and lighting rods, it could help drive the overarching point home that speedsters need a deep connection to humanity in order to thrive. Thawne could even be a good example of the other side, what happens when a speedster is void of love, lacking in humanity - all they can create is a force for anger and hate.

Honestly though, I think most of that hate comes from people who try to downplay their closed mindedness (to put it mildly in this context) views by saying Barry is “too emotional” for simply ... loving his wife and showing human emotions in emotionally traumatic situations (how dare he right?). So the argument that ALL speedsters are emotionally driven by love would likely fall on deaf ears. Even if you tried to approach it scientifically by means of a trend.

It’s a shame honestly, in my eyes this portrayal of Barry Allen has been breaking barriers around how a superhero is suppose to behave on an emotional level. If only the haters could take away the lessons that it’s okay to be emotionally vulnerable, and that emotional connections drive the world like the show has been constantly and consistently preaching for the past 7 years. But if they haven’t gotten it by now, I don’t know that they ever will. I’m also not sure why they’re still watching the show tbh lol

Is there anything dumber than a reverse-age AU? No, seriously, Dick is the paragon because he was the first Robin and antedated Speedy, Aqualad and Aquagirl, and Kid Flash. And you can go down the list. Tim has to follow Jason because Jason would be different without the death trauma: Tim himself had a bit of a complex about not "deserving" the mantle Dick created and Jason sanctified. Then we get to Damian, who is young enough to be Dick's son.

Like, I’m not trying to shit on people who just like reverse age AUs for the fluffy aspects a lot of them tend to have, to be fair. Some people are just looking for fluff, and I get that. Those AUs don’t appeal to me for many reasons I’ve already gotten into in depth, but on a surface level I mean, its not really a big deal to switch things up sometimes for the hell of it. But in any kind of in-depth examination of that premise, I feel there’s a whole lot of missed opportunity left to explore in that....with that being I guess the thing that nags at me most? 

I mean....I would be genuinely interested in reading a reverse age AU that actually acted as kind of a....”It’s A Wonderful Life” examination of what happens if Dick isn’t the first Batkid, but the youngest. I think it can still be plausible for Tim, Jason, Cass and Dick to all end up adopted even if Damian is the oldest.....but the one thing I’ve never seen any reverse age AU examine is the part I’d reeeeeeaally be interested in, like you alluded to with the other original sidekicks....

And that’s the element that’s really missing from reverse age AUs for me, personally.....acknowledgment of Dick’s impact not just on his family’s formation....but the DC universe as a whole. Dick wasn’t just the first Robin. He was the first child hero, period. He was what started the whole movement, not just within his own family, but outside of it as well. Without his example, would Donna and Garth have left their homes to become heroes for the surface world/Man’s world? Would Wally have even tried replicating Barry’s experiment, thinking that it was even possible for a kid like him to be a hero? If Bruce’s first child and protégé was his biological son, would Oliver have thought to take Roy in as his ward instead of just making sure he ended up with a good home?

Look, I love Damian. But Damian is not Dick, and it doesn’t really track that their positions could be switched and wind up with nothing else being all that majorly different......I guess the thing about reverse age AUs that makes them really just not my cup of tea is like....to me, it seems like they should result in HUGE ripple effects and alteration to the Batfamily and the DC Earth as a whole....and those ripple effects imo ARE the story, ARE the things really begging to be explored by that premise to me.....but its not really what I think most readers and writers of those stories are looking for, hence the disconnect for me. 

Like....as I said, I do like Damian, but for who he is. And who he is, is just....not the bright, shining example who captures the imagination and inspires other people the way Dick inspires people. And that’s okay! Because its not a knock against anyone else to not be that, its just who they are.....and who they are isn’t Dick Grayson. Everything about Dick Grayson specifically, is what led to the trend of child heroes both on a meta level and an in universe level. Nothing about that is accidental.....those only appeared in more and more comics because Dick Grayson, the original Robin, captured the imagination of readers and appealed to them and made them want to see MORE child heroes.....just like the sight of a young child in bright colors and cracking puns even as he kept pace with one of the most dark and infamous heroes of the DC Earth captured the imagination of other young people like Dick and with talents and powers of their own and made them sit up and say hey, maybe that could be me too....if someone my age can be BATMAN’S partner, why couldn’t I be Wonder Woman’s/Green Arrow’s/Aquaman’s/The Flash’s? 

And I just don’t really see Damian having that effect on peers, you know? Because Damian is like his father in temperament and preferences, whereas Dick was deliberately a contrast by his own choices. Damian wanted to BE like Bruce growing up hearing his father’s legend....and then he wanted to be more like Dick, when he realized Dick’s own strengths and attributes, IMO.....but as the first child, without Dick’s example? Damian would be more inclined to be a mini-Batman, calling himself something like Batboy and molding himself in his father’s image......which means keeping to the shadows. Being more myth than in-your-face-indisputable-fact like Dick was as Robin. And Bruce would have been more inclined to see this as a good thing, and keep Damian as much beside him in the shadows as possible, unlike Dick who just wasn’t suited to that and wasn’t interested in trying to be that. 

So I think that a huge potential ripple is right there from the start....like maybe there would be other Batkids and protégés for Bruce after Damian, but would there be other teen heroes? Would there at least maybe have been a delayed start to the other teen heroes, not inspired by Damian directly but more just parallel evolutions who took a little more time to find the inspiration and opportunities to impress themselves upon their mentors? Would even Gothamites know for sure that Batman even had a partner, or partners plural, or would they be more rumor than symbol, like Dick was as Robin, and the other Robins were inspired to be when following HIS example, rather than BRUCE’S example?

That’s what I would really love to see from the reverse age AU premise, personally. And why the ones that exist just don’t really draw me in - they all seem to by premise alone just kinda devalue Dick’s effect on his surroundings as well as just his character as a whole.....there’s the impression that it doesn’t really matter if Dick came first, that anyone could have had the same effects and results that he did, when like.....that’s just not true, IMO. And it is kinda an inherent knock against his character because it sort of runs with the idea that Dick’s no big deal, that his precedent is no big deal, that he wasn’t necessary, for the DC Earth to be the one we all are drawn to today, and that’s just....I don’t see it. 

I mean, so much of that is what draws me to his character, personally....the fact that he IS so much bigger than just himself, that his actions and choices have such far-reaching implications. Dick Grayson IS the ripple effects that he’s caused from day one of his creation.....and ignoring that, acting like that’s no big deal and like it could just as easily have been any other character when to my mind it wouldn’t have been any other character because no other character has made the choices he has, specifically, for the reasons he has, specifically.....like, I think that has a lot to do with a lot of the almost implicit or absent-minded....not even contempt, but just....non-interest in his character, that many fans of other Robins have. 

Like, what if Dick wasn’t the first - that’s the basic premise of these particular AUs. But the conclusion almost all of them result in is....nothing else would really be all that different. And that’s just not that far away from saying that Dick’s character is largely irrelevant and inconsequential....when to my mind, obviously, nothing is further than the truth. Yeah, what if Dick wasn’t the first? Honestly, truly asked and examined.....what would be different? Not just about his family but the whole DC Earth?

Because I think the differences would be enormous. 

LOL, this is the 80th anniversary of this character’s creation. A character who has consistently been one of the highest profile, most visible characters in the entire DC universe for pretty much all of those 80 years, in one way or another. Who has only spent part of one issue dead, in all of that time. And in none of that time retired, or absent, or not in some way still at the center of the cape community.

How do you pretend that a character with that much history, that much presence.....has no real distinct impact on everything he’s connected to? That he could be plucked out of that tapestry and easily and seamlessly switched with a character who is noted for being the night to his day, just as Dick originally was the day to Bruce’s night? It just doesn’t make sense, IMO.

Maybe this is a silly idea but I think the only way we can get #IStandWithCandicePatton to trend is if we all tweet about it at the same time. So I mean, for example, if it’s 7pm EST & we start to tweet then at 6pm CST they start, 5pm MST they start & 4pm PST they start. I hope that makes sense. Thereby all of our tweets are accumulated together at the same time despite different time zones, then maybe it can trend.

Hi Tati, is it just me? Or did we not get a fair amount of spoilers this season. It seems like last year there were a lot of interviews, bts content and general buzz. We didn’t even get a sizzle reel for 4b. It just seems like since the wedding, The Flash hasn’t had any type promotion. Am I wrong?

You’re correct. The only things that they hyped this season were Crisis on Earth-X, Mystery Girl and Run Iris Run. Outside of that, Flash has had very little promotion and next to no spoilers. No idea why that is.

The we’re going to need more diapers line and Iris you’re glowing is definitely foreshadowing for WA babies.I guess it’s possible that IWA and Fefe could find out they’re pregnant in 5x01 and 7x01 respectively. However, the prospect of Fefe having a baby on-screen is frightening. Her acting is already subpar

Yeah, there’s really no way to know when Iris will be pregnant. All we know is one day she will give birth to the twins, lol.

Yeah TVLine often ends up adding slots as they’re revealed. Wasn’t there only two pregnancies in the first place anyway, now there’s three? I’m neutral on Iris being pregnant in the finale, but I definitely don’t think the Scorecard is the deal breaker.

TV shows - especially ones run by white people - have very specific looks for their actors/characters. So unfortunately, it’s very rare that we’ll get to see a vastly different look.

I don’t know anything about tv production so I’m wondering with the announcement of David Ramsey directing episode 7x11 do all tv shows have plans that far in advance?

Last year had a lot of spoilers because it was about Iris and if she is going to die in the future so everyone was wondering when will savitar to take her and how would Barry save her but this year not everyone is interested in devoe or Wells and Caitlin plots.

Decided to try and answer these using Gifs and Images of My characters (aka who or what reminds me of My character)

Going to start with My Flash character Renee West. My OC is mainly “played by” Lyndsy Fonseca. 

A: Aptitude 1. what are your oc’s natural abilities, things they’ve been doing since young?   Science and Writing.

2. what activities have they participated in? 

Took Journalism and Fashion Design in College 

(accurate except she doesn’t smoke or wear a beret.)

3. what abilities do they have?  Can create Lightning and thunderstorms via the weather.

Also Obsidian Storm but she’s less of a power and more like another person inside Renee (like Killer Frost)

4. what things are they bad at? Skill wise,anything involving putting something together. (unless it’s making a suit) Her Scientific interests mainly involved numbers,math and the human psyche. 

5. what is their most impressive talent? um her powers. Not magical her Forensic talents.

Renee actually does Forensic facial reconstruction (Digitally) but I couldn’t find a gif,not even from Bones!

2. what is their eye color? Blue Green. Becomes lighter and laced with Lightning when Obsidian Storm.

4. what is their major comfort food? A Home cooked meal. If not then Chinese Takeout,Coffee or Big Belly Burger. 

 5. who is the best at comforting them when down? Caitlin or her Dad Joe. HR and Harry as well. 

D: Decoration 1. how would they decorate a house if they had one under their name? Well Harry bought her a Penthouse. It’s very rich looking,cream colored walls,Expansive Living room and nice leather furniture. 

2. how would they decorate their child’s room? I don’t think she’ll ever have a kid plus she is a Stepmother to Jessie. 

 3. how do they decorate their own room? A mixture of these with some blue mood lighting at night and pictures or a painting of Thunderstorms.

 5. do they like makeup/nail/beauty trends? She doesn’t go out of her way to watch Trends. But she likes to look nice in public and is especially mindful of her makeup.

 4. what parts of them do they like and dislike? She both likes and dislikes her optimism,sometimes,like with S.O’s,she dislikes how optimistic or forgiving she can be.

4. have they broken any rules they now regret breaking? I think she regrets leaving everyone after Eobard “Died” and joining The Rogues,becoming a thief/ villain. but only partly because then she would never have met (and dated) Snart and Rory. Also regrets joining The Young Rogues more recently. 

5. do they find any rules they/others follow absolutely ridiculous? Obsidian finds most rules ridiculous lol.

5. are they cautious when out? a bit but with Storm watching her back and being trained in hand to hand combat,she really doesn’t need to be.

4. do you enjoy writing them more than other characters? I think she’s easier to write then alot of My characters (aside from Suzanna My TWD Character) 

5. what’s your favorite thing about them? Her Wit,Intelligence,open mindedness,I love writing the duality between her and Storm and of course her different relationships with Thawne and The Wells’s.
