What it feels like being a carer
What it feels like being a carer ….
I pride myself in my normal working life as one who has helped many families and help others learn about palliative care. One who has worked within the field for many years and has advocated the needs of the carer throughout. Reading the research and evidence to inform and help gain insight as to the importance of looking after those who are the carers.
Being in the thick of it gives me the raw picture of the rollercoaster of emotions, the loneliness, and tiresome conversations each day. We hear don’t we, carers/patients say “I have told someone this”, and “haven’t you read the notes”, squirming with tenderness for the person when actually they may be trying to gauge understanding in readiness of a difficult conversation. However we know that is not always the case, when we know notes are not shared, letters not read, no preparation which are all inexcusable reasons.
My mother has been ill for a few years on and off, but with her war child resilience and determination proves us all wrong and continued to hold house and home, skirting the issues of the unmanageable garden, although the pots came to life on days when energy prevailed. Still in charge of the oven and shopping even if your assessment and concerns.
Assessment is the key, although I sometimes think a gift appreciating the value of this, to observe and measure change, and what this alludes to. For me it has allowed us to paint a clear picture of change and concerns that may not be being addressed. The community teams, such as community hubs, or GPs listen, but they rely on the person telling them the truth, the whole truth and not worried about burdening the health professional or care assessor with their problems. The last years I drove and went along enabling the consultants to capture a quick holistic snapshot of what each has said. I found further times where we captured precious moments to relay what is happening and explore decision making and medical decisions for when mum wouldn’t be able to; about what is important when you are not so well and drip-feeding expectation.
Naturally when your family member has many conditions, how much harder this becomes. Our last 9 months, yes 9 months which in this time we're told she was dying on over 2 occasions, just shows we are not God, it becomes that little bit harder to know if celebrating Christmas and birthdays are a distant dream.
From where I stand now living through the last 11 weeks of discharge I see the endless isolation, lack of guidance, or unhelpful questions, “what would you like us to do” a tad challenging. trying desperately for mum not to be readmitted as we knew that is what she wanted, but she still had living to do. In the hospital there where kind empathetic words shared when we were told she was dying yet when she improved the challenge, it would seem, was when they needed to have a conversation on the future treatments and appropriateness of admission, being explicit about what treatments are reasonable and where this should take place wasn’t something that many doctors found comfortable addressing. OK, it is my passion to share and help people know where they are at, the literature shouts out the need for honesty and trust, but many people out there do not have specialist pall care so need the explicit guidance from a health professional. Addressing DNAPCPR and later the ReSPECT conversations took a few sharp turns before a consultant obliged from palliative care, and yet we wonder why carers would ring 999/111.
The ongoing lack of communication between teams who work in the same locality surprises me and the same for health and social care barriers, with three folders in the house, and yet electronic devices used but not shared. As a carer having to give ongoing precis of my mothers’ condition of the lasts months is testing, and one could say time-wasting when we know all health and social care workers are on a tight schedule. I am saddened how the need for support has not filtered down with more professionals identifying and maybe seeing where their role is to do this. These findings however do not dismiss the kindness of the individuals who visit, but maybe the lack of understanding and weariness of a 24/7 carer.
Emotions fluctuate, grief is around each corner and you never know which one is going to raise its head like one of the Jack in the boxes jumping out with no warning. You kick yourself for being short with someone or having surges of anger as they do not hear what you need, which is for me by the way, a listening ear, clear direction, guidance, articulated with confidence.
When I contact a professional or email to review the carer schedule due to changes this becomes onerous, always on guard, little time to relax. It is on us the carer's shoulders to keep the cogs turning. The rejection, when no one rings back or does not offer a visit to review and reassess, builds up over time. It begs the question what should I be expecting; is it me who should lower these expectations if my loved one wants to stay at home, die at home, then should I just deal with it?
I sound ungrateful, I’m not and appreciate the professionals and caregivers who have crossed the threshold and been there, especially the night cover to allow me to recharge my battery however there is an ongoing need to think and plan how can we support carers to have space for themselves and allowed to live a dignified, safe life at home.
I see how the patient’s capacity is so in the moment, with memories of situations melting as quickly as the ice cream on a summer’s day. Health and care need to listen to the patient and carer and share their assessments and agree on a plan and build a picture.
I am just so fortunate to be able to take the wheel and steer my mum's life and care to support this as she wishes in times of need, with the knowledge gained and strength and resilience and humility and courage to be able to talk about living and dying well and what that means to her.
Please Health and Care professionals, be there for all those other carers’ and patients when the phone rings. A question to yourself “do I see the whole picture and know who is involved and what is their burden” before you respond. Have you completed a carers assessment, so we support the carer's needs to continue taking the helm and holding the fort!

Interview
Requested by the cutie anon with the pure ideas\
(featuring my favourite gif of Harry tbh)
Title: Interview
Fandom: Disney Descendants
Pairing: Harry Hook x fem!reader (my first Harry fic, yay!)
Request: “Hi! May I please have a request? Harry's girlfriend finds out she's pregnant with his child. In fear, she goes to Auradon and Harry finds out when she's asked about the baby during an interview. He then goes to Auradon. :)” -anon
Warnings: teen pregnancy, a bit of language, hints of past smut, nosy ass paparazzi, overuse of commas as always (It’s also a lot longer than I thought it’d be I’m sorry)
Description: Having dated Harry for quite some time, (Y/N) was absolutely certain she loved him, but how certain was she about how he’d feel seeing those two little lines. Maybe he wouldn’t have to see them... maybe he’d find out another way...
Living on the Isle of the Lost wasn’t exactly fun and games, but its inhabitants still found a way to make their own fun. Some kids stole, some kids vandalized the place, and some kids- like the kids in Uma’s infamous pirate crew- prefered to just rule the whole island. Uma, daughter of Ursula, and the massive army of kids who followed her lead were the most terrifying group anywhere. Uma’s right hands- Harry, Gil, and (Y/N)- were among the most feared in the ranks, but that didn’t mean they feared each other. In fact, they were the tightest-knit group of friends anyone had ever seen. Harry and Gil were like brothers to each other, the two of them treated Uma like she was as much their little sister as she was their boss, Gil and Uma were as protective of (Y/N) as possible, and Harry and (Y/N)- well, they were in love. The four of them were as thick as thieves, and they loved how they lived their lives. Other than their shifts at Uma’s restaurant, their days were spent plundering the streets, fighting with swords, and “partying” at night. Most of these nights ended with hangovers and laughable stories, but every so often, they ended in passionate evenings between Harry and (Y/N).
“That’s how this happened.” You muttered to yourself, “It has to be.”
You sat in the bathroom of Uma’s ship, staring terrified at the device in front of you. You hadn’t been feeling well for the past few weeks and you had decided to take a pregnancy test- just in case. You began to regret the decision as you stared terrified as the two blue lines in the little window. Thousands of horrid thoughts swirled through your head as you sat petrified against the wall. You sighed, tossing the test in the garbage and pulling out your cellphone. You choked up as you dialed in a number. Harry loved you, you knew that, and he’d always been good to you, but you were mortified at the idea of how he’d react to being a father- especially knowing how he felt about his own father. You knew of only one thing to do, and you prayed it would work as you held the phone to your ear.
“Hello?” the voice on the other end of the line asked.
“Evie? It’s (Y/N). I know I don’t deserve this, but I need your help.”
You could almost hear her smile through the phone, “Of course I’ll help, (Y/N). What do you need?”
Having been friends with her before she left, you told Evie what you could without breaking completely, and gave her your request. She came through, tenfold, and within the next week, King Ben had invited you and a few others to start a new life in Auradon. You told Uma of your invitation, and she encouraged you to go, mostly so you could spy on Ben and Mal for her. You agreed, letting Gil help you pack and having Uma distract Harry until you left. You said quick goodbyes and hopped in the limo, but you were in such a rush to get out of there that you almost didn’t notice that Harry was still on a job for Uma when you pulled out of the drive- you almost didn’t notice that you hadn’t said goodbye to him. Unfortunately, before you had a chance to say anything, the driver had breached the barrier and she had officially left the Isle of the Lost forever.
With help from Evie, who had also convinced Mal and their Auradon pals to assist, your transition into your new life was easier than ever. They helped cover up your baby bump with ease in the early stages and they agreed to keep it low key until you figured out what to do. The problem was, this plan didn’t last long. The larger the bump got, the harder it got to conceal, and one day the secret broke through. You were in your dorm, with Lonnie and Evie trying to help you adjust your dress, when Fairy Godmother walked in looking for Evie. She saw the bump and stared at you, mortified.
You gasped and started to panic, “Fairy Godmother, please. Please don’t freak out.”
Eyes still wide, she shook her head and closed the door promptly, “I’m not freaking out. I’m just... surprised at this, this... and I’m just curious about you and your life inside you and how long have you been pregnant exactly?”
The more she rambled on, the more tears threatened to spill over onto your cheeks. You were so terrified that she’d expel you for this; you couldn’t go back to the Isle, especially not like this. How would your parents react? How would Harry?
Fairy Godmother was still staring at you, waiting for an answer, when she saw a few tears roll down your face. She sighed as Evie wiped a few of the tears away.
“Girls, could you give us a moment please?”
The girls left, shooting you apologetic looks, and Fairy Godmother sat you down on the bed.
“I’m not mad, I’m not upset, I just want to know. How long?”
You took a deep, shaky breath, “4 months, I guess.”
She nodded slowly, “You want to take care of it, don’t you?”
“Yes.” You nod rapidly, “Yes, I do, but please, I want to raise it here. In Auradon.”
She smiles at you, “I understand. Why don’t you come with me?”
You both stood up and you stared at her in terror, “You’re not going to expel me, are you?”
“Oh goodness, no!” Fairy Godmother cried, wrapping an arm around your shoulders, “No, sweetie, I’m going to take you to a doctor. If you’re going to go through with this, I want you to be as healthy and as safe as possible.”
“Thank you, Fairy Godmother.” You smiled weakly.
“Of course! And, don’t worry, I’ll try my best to make sure that no one knows about this.”
Back on the Isle of the Lost, Harry was crushed; he’d pretend he wasn’t, but everyone knew he was. You’d left forever without so much as a goodbye. He held out his hook at waist level, staring at it and reminiscing your times together as he defended you against Uma- who was upset that you hadn’t sent her details on the whole Ben and Mal situation. She sighed when she saw the look on his face.
“I know you miss her, but the more information we have on this, the sooner you’ll see her again, Hook.”
Harry gave her a look, knowing that her statement wasn’t certain.
“You know what’ll make you feel better?” Gil interjected, smiling, “Watching some TV.”
With that, he clicked the power button on the rusty old television and watched as it slowly sparked to life. All three of them gasped loudly when the picture loaded, revealing you being ushered through Auradon by guards and chased by reporters. Outraged, Harry smashed his hook repeatedly against the old set, turning up the volume so they could hear the reporter’s voiceover:
“... has been shocked today as medical sources have confirmed that one of the newest ‘second-chance’ children, (Y/N), is in fact pregnant. She apparently was expecting when she first came to Auradon and the maternity has progressed since. There is no news yet on when the baby is due or what the staff of Auradon Prep plan to do about this situation, but the entire kingdom is certainly perplexed by the first case of teenage pregnancy in its history.”
Gil, Uma and Harry all stood staring at the screen before them, speechless as their jaws hung open.
“(Y/N)! (Y/N)! Do you plan to keep the baby?” a reporter screamed.
You whirled around, mortified, “Of course I do!”
“(Y/N)! Do you know what gender the baby is?”
“Why is that any of your business?”
“(Y/N)! (Y/N)! Tell us about the father!”
At that question, you froze in fury. The guards tried to hold you back, but you marched right us to the man’s microphone and stared intensely into his eyes.
“Don’t you dare speak of him. Don’t you dare spin this story in your favour. Don’t you dare exploit me for your profit. Don’t you dare exploit this baby, and don’t you dare exploit its father. We may be villains, but we are people, just like you. I will not let you use us to sell your stupid story, and I will definitely not let you use him!”
You turned back around and marched off with the guards. On the other end of the screen, your three best friends stood shocked at what had just happened.
Gil was the first to speak, “She didn’t leave because she wanted to, did she?”
Uma shook her head, “No, she left because-”
“Because she thought she had no other choice.”
Solemnly glaring at the ground, Harry turned on his heel and marched out, setting his plan in motion.
You stood at the window of the castle, looking out onto the courtyard as the limo pulled up out front. The new batch of villain kids were arriving today and everyone refused to tell you who it was, so you were curious. It’s not like you could go visit them yourself, you hadn’t stepped outside since the news story aired. You rubbed your bump soothingly as you watched the limo doors open and the driver climb out. He opened the passenger door to reveal four kids who you recognized but knew very little about. As the kids clamoured out, a guard went to open the trunk, only to have Harry tumble out in a very ungraceful manner. Your eyes widened in shock as you watched him race away from the guards and straight to Evie.
“Evie!” He growled, dashing out of the limo driver’s grasp and grabbing her shoulders, “Where is she?”
She gulped and subconsciously turned to look at your window. Harry followed her gaze, making eye contact with you and when you ran, he ran too. He expertly avoided every guard, teacher staff member who tried to stop him. He maneuvered his way through the school, running and jumping until he found you in a stairwell. Your eyes locked with his, and you moved your arm to shield your belly, but you said nothing.
“You didn’t tell me. Why didn’t you tell me?” He was shaken to the say the least, and shut the stairwell door as his voice dropped to just above a whisper, “You didn’t even say goodbye.”
After a few moments of silence, you spoke up, “Harry, I... I didn’t want you to hate me.”
He whirled around in disbelief, “Hate you? Dear God, (Y/N), how could I ever hate you?”
You shrugged, tearing up as you stepped closer to him, “I know how you feel about your father, I figured you’d feel the same way about being a father.”
“(Y/N), baby, no.” He chuckled, “I could never, especially not when you’re the mother.”
You laughed and kissed him sweetly, and he returned your kiss with passion before pulling away. He slipped his hook off, placing it in your hand with a quick “hold this for me?”, before running both of his hands over the bump. He laughed to himself before smiling up at you.
“Promise that from now on, it’s just us?” You asked hopefully.
“All three of us. You, this baby, and I.” Harry smirked, “We ride with the tide.”

Yoga Knee Deep in Rona
It is well known and supported by statistics from multiple medical journals that ritualistic behavior induces a calm to manage stress caused by unpredictability. *(1) So it goes without saying that weaving a wellness routine of movement therapy aka yoga into your pandemic schedule can help navigate the uncertainty of today's times. In fact, rituals are needed as an internal structure because our external lives in unprecedented times have become totally unstructured which triggers more anxiety and stress.
Of all your vital signs, which include the cardiac pulse rate, body temperature, blood pressure, and respiratory rate, only the respiratory rate can be controlled with a conscious and voluntary effort. The other vital signs are involuntary and not controllable with conscious effort. Science has given us a new term. Cardiac Coherence AKA — a term I've always known as Pranayama. This method of prana I'm introducing was developed based on the understanding that slow, deep breathing increases the activity of the vagus nerve, a part of the parasympathetic nervous system. The vagus nerve controls and also measures the activity of many internal organs. When the vagus nerve is stimulated, calmness pervades the body. The heart rate slows and becomes regular; blood pressure decreases; muscles relax. When the vagus nerve informs the brain of these changes, it, too, relaxes, increasing feelings of peacefulness. Thus, the technique works through both neurobiological and psychological mechanisms.
When ‘Rona's’ numbers started climbing we were told that masks were for the sick and to keep the sick from getting other people sick. Now it’s, ‘Everybody needs to wear a mask.' If your face is covered, it stands to reason you have a harder time breathing. In a way, you feel more contained. So, yeah, anxiety is a huge barrier to wanting to wear the mask. I get it. It's cumbersome to have a mask on. Mask makes some feel a little claustrophobic. If you wear glasses, it's a steamy mess. Some friends have said that ‘I have the right to do whatever I want. This is America’. This sense of entitlement is unwarranted. But you can’t go to the store without shoes or a shirt on.
Researchers say wearing a mask that covers your nose is crucial to preventing coronavirus infection. The University of North Carolina recently found the nostrils have far more receptors targeted by coronavirus than do the lungs or throat. Rona makes 1,000 times as many copies of itself in the nose compared to the lungs.
I have taken on a challenge with my workouts recently and over the last couple of weeks, I've seen some drastic results. My daily workout has been with a mask on, and I highly recommend it. Consider dawning your new fashion accessory (your mask) as a training device. utilizing Cardiac Coherence. A western scientific name for Pranayama.
Wearing a mask is the equivalent of prolonged exposure to a high-altitude air, results in the body's ability to use oxygen. It also affects a hormone secreted from the kidneys called Erythropoietin (EPO) that regulates red blood cell production. A higher red blood cell count means more oxygen carried to the muscles, which translates to increased endurance.
DID YOU KNOW: Your breathe passes through our arteries 960 times an hour? Under normal conditions, we breathe 16 to 20 times per minute or from 960 to 1,200 times per hour. If you breathe less than 16 times per minute is referred to as bradypnea or slow breathing. A respiratory rate of more than 20 times per minute is known as tachypnea or rapid breathing. In Vedic terms these powerful strokes of exhaling breath known as Kapal Bhati Pranayam or the breathing exercise of Anulom Vilom Have been effective and beneficial in preventing infections as it unblocks the nose, keeps the energy flowing and also improves blood circulation.
Lessons I quickly learned with a mask while working out:
Be smart [and] don't overdo it.
If I feel dizzy, imbalanced, or overly fatigued, stop.
When exercising with a face mask. Less oxygen in your lungs means less oxygen in your bloodstream and your working muscles. Over a few weeks, the body adapts and becomes more efficient at metabolizing oxygen. At first, I fatigued faster, especially with cardio. With less air, the body has less available oxygen to utilize during exercise to convert glucose [sugar] into energy.
Tips For Optimizing Your Immune System
1. Gargle warm salt water and use a neti pot. These ancient Ayurvedic strategies—dissolving about ½ tsp. Himalayan or sea salt in 8 oz. of warm water—is “non-negotiable” if you are trying to prevent sickness. Germs and bacteria hang out in your nose and throat 24 hours before digging into your bloodstream and affecting your immunity, and salt clears them out. You can use these saltwater rinses as preventative measures or when you feel sick.
“A balanced circadian clock (or your internal time-keeping for cycles of sleep and alertness) is directly linked to a strong immune system. *(4) Psychology Today reports that people who sleep 6 hours or less each night are 4.2 times more likely to catch a common cold than those who sleep 8 hours a night.

yo it’s the middle of the night and I’m all wrung out, which means it’s a perfect time for a tumblr post about disability!
I’m here today to talk about euphemistic language. I’m sure any person with a disability knows the way able-bodied people like to talk around our disabilities. Really acknowledging a disability (i.e A LACK OF ABILITY) makes a lot of AB people really uncomfortable. I think a lot of that is the side effect of some well-meaning ideas… Children are often taught that everyone is the same down deep, and to think anything different is discriminatory. And sure, don’t be a dick about peoples’ differences. But refusing to even acknowledge them really only hurts the people who aren’t at the top of the power/visibility hierarchy. People are trained to interpret “we’re all the same” as “we are all like (or all should be like) those in power”. By downplaying differences, the actual effect is steamrolling cultural differences and disavowing individualized needs.
Let me break this down. Here are some stock phrases pertaining to disability that I’m sure a lot of you have heard. “Disabled people are just like you.” “They’re not disabled, they’re differently abled.” “Disabled people can do anything you can do. They can do anything they put their minds to.” Etc. Etc. You get the picture. You’ve seen the Very Special Episodes.
Now, that’s all patently false. Disabled people are not just like able-bodied people. They are disabled. They have different abilities and different needs. They do not automatically have “different” abilities. When a person loses the ability to walk, they don’t automatically gain the ability to teleport or something. It’s not a trade-in scenario. They cannot all do anything you can do. Sometimes, with effort, pain, and accommodations, they can achieve the same end result that you do. Sometimes they can even do better. But they can’t do them the way you can and often can’t do them at all. A person with a mobility disability can’t walk like you do. A person with a vision disability can’t see like you do. A person with a hearing disability can’t hear like you do. Etc. They can sometimes make up for that — but they cannot, by definition, do the things able-bodied people can do. Which is not some unspeakable evil; just one of life’s facts.
So what’s the big deal, you may be thinking. What’s wrong with euphemistic language? You’re just being nice. No. You really aren’t. You are disavowing their disability. That’s not something that PWD have the luxury to do. You can walk into a shop and think “wow, PWD can do anything I can do!” while someone with a mobility disability is still stuck at the entrance below a flight of stairs. You can think “PWD can do anything they put their minds to!” as you get a basic entry-level job that has requirements that PWD cannot, or are not allowed to, fulfill. (See: Cashier work, customer service, etc.) When you say that PWD can do anything an AB person can do, you are ignoring their disabilities, their struggles, and the accommodations they need to succeed.
Okay, you say. Social model of disability. We’ll just make the world accessible, all barriers will be removed, PWD will be just like me! No. We will never be like you. We have been running a mile to reach the starting line you’re waiting (im)patiently at. We have been going on experimental medications, doing physical/mental/speech/etc. therapies, training our bodies to use assistive devices. We’ve been running ourselves into the ground. And sometimes we’ll still never reach that starting line. Sometimes we’ll be too sick or too tired and there’s nothing accommodations can do to change that. When your own body is trying to kill you, there’s only so much a wheelchair can do. And if we never reach that starting line, we never reach the finish line that’s been set out for us as “normal”.
Because when we’re told things from birth, things like “you can do anything the other kids can do!” or “the only thing stopping you is your attitude!”, we internalize that. The secondary message to all those euphemisms is “you can be like anyone else — so why the hell aren’t you?” It isn’t a message of hope to PWD. It’s an impossible standard. “Why can’t I just get through college?” we think, ignoring the way that we stagger from hospital visit to hospital visit. “Everyone else does. I can be like everyone else. I can do anything they can do! So it must be that I’m not trying hard enough. I’m not working hard enough. I don’t hurt enough. I need to do more.”
PWD aren’t like AB people because they have to work two, three, a hundred times harder to reach the same point that AB people do. They have more financial challenges. More mental health challenges. They have to deal with pain, exhaustion, lack of accommodations, ableism, political institutions that want them dead. When you say “PWD can do anything!” you’re ignoring all the reasons they can’t. You’re telling them they have no reason not to achieve the same things as everyone else. You feed into the cultural idea that disability is just an excuse, just a hurdle that needs to be cleared in order for them to take place in “normal” society. It makes “overcoming” their disability a moral imperative. Because “we’re all the same” means they’re just like you. Or they should be. Because being AB is the cultural norm we default to.
Here’s what PWD actually need to hear:
“You’re not just like me. You face challenges I’ll never be able to comprehend. Holding you to the same standard as me as cruel. You may not be able to do everything (hell, who can?) but what you can do is good enough. You don’t need to earn your place in this world. Just living in it is enough. You’re not a drain if you need extra resources. You’re not a drain if you can’t create, produce, labor at the same rate as AB people. There are things you can’t do, and that’s okay. You don’t have to pretend to be AB. You don’t have to work yourself to the bone so you can be like the rest of us. You don’t have to kill yourself when you’re not. And I will fight with you so all of the roadblocks you have to face are as small as we can get them, so even if you can’t do everything, you can do more. I will fight for you when you’re too sick to do it yourself, because you are worth fighting for even when you cannot achieve.”
Because newsflash, assholes. None of us can do anything. None of us can do everything. No one’s gonna look at an AB person and say “Usain Bolt can run 45 km/h. You can do anything. You should aspire to run 45 km/h.” Because that’s stupid! Just because some people can do something, that doesn’t mean everyone can, and no amount of euphemistic language can change that! The only difference in this scenario is where we draw the lines between amazing, normal, and unacceptable. For some PWD, getting out of bed is amazing. It’s Usain Bolt levels of achievement. Don’t downgrade that to normal just because it’s normal for the majority in power. We’re not all the same. Encouraging people with disabilities to hit the same benchmarks as AB people (or exceptional PWD) is sometimes like encouraging (and expecting) some random dude to line up with Usain Bolt. And then you get surprised when we destroy ourselves trying to do it.
Here’s the bottom line. This idea that PWD are just like you? It hurts us. It makes us feel like we’re failing if we aren’t. It makes us feel like we aren’t enough if we aren’t. When we can’t do what you can, no matter how hard we try. No matter how much we hurt ourselves. When you say “all humans are the same, really”, you’re actually setting normality where you are. And for some of us, that’s a bar we’ll never reach. Some of us, frankly speaking, probably shouldn’t try. (Yes, it is okay not to even try to attain AB levels of achievement. Don’t hurt yourself for a fool’s errand. You can try if you want to (and I’m rooting for you to succeed) but don’t feel that you’re lacking if you don’t.) Ableism is saying that disabled people are only worthwhile if they can eventually do the same things able-bodied people can. Truly being an advocate for the disabled means being an advocate for them even when they’re fucking disabled. Don’t talk around our disabilities; that just means you’re not helping us live with them. Don’t treat a lack of ability like something too shameful to talk about, because all that does is -- you guessed it -- inspire shame.
For many people who are disabled, the best thing they can learn isn’t “you can do anything”. It’s “learn your individualized limits and respect them; it’s okay to have them”. Listen to your body, not to society’s ideas of what you should or should not be able to do. Push yourself, but not to the point of breaking. When someone gets nervous and tries not to talk about your disability, talk about it as loudly as you want. Demand accommodations. Talk freely about your life as it is, not as the inspiration porn people expect. Make them see you as you are. Because we’re not all the same. And that’s okay.
It hurts to admit that you can’t do something everyone says you can do. But there’s a special strength in self-knowledge. Love yourself enough to forgive yourself for the abilities you do not have. You do not need them to be whole.
#long post#ableism#I spent so much of my life learning this#I wasted so much time trying to be like everyone else#hurting myself#hospitalizing myself#expending useless energy tilting at windmills#hating myself for not working hard enough to be normal#and I still struggle with it honestly#I struggle SO MUCH#but I'm slowly learning that it's okay to be disabled#not because I can still achieve what they can#but because IT'S OKAY TO BE DISABLED#and it's okay if I can't do what they can

This Is What Happens to Patient Engagement Under HIPAA
According to a recent New England Journal of Medicine Report, patient engagement is a key way to improve patient and population health overall.
However, due to HIPAA, providers often struggle with properly engaging patients.

What is patient engagement?
Patient engagement is the concept of interacting with patients through various methods (such as social media, portal systems, mobile apps) to get the patient active in their own care. The goal of increasing patient engagement is to improve the patients’ own health outcomes.
Patient portals, bluetooth enabled devices, and smartphone applications are all great ways to engage patients. However, Covered Entities and Business Associates are afraid of sharing sensitive protected health information (PHI) through these means. Sharing PHI over unprotected networks leaves Covered Entities and Business Associates ripe for HIPAA violations.
This is a shame because patient engagement does work when implemented properly. However, lack of proper communication is why patient engagement fails to improves. A recent West survey found 75% of patients with chronic conditions want their doctor to contact them regularly to keep tabs on their health.
Additionally, patients feel that they don’t have proper access to their records. A CDW Healthcare survey found that 89% of patients say they want easier access to their health records.

How to improve patient engagement under HIPAA
One of the most common ways healthcare entities tried to improve patient engagement is through using patient portals.
Unfortunately, patient portals tend to be cumbersome to use. Brian Eastwood, consumer engagement and consumer-directed healthcare analyst at Chilmark Research, recently told Healthcare Dive that the adoption of patient portal technology is only at between 25% and 35%.
In addition to HIPAA barriers, portals are typically not mobile-friendly, which makes it harder for patients to access them.
Luckily, there is an alternative to patient portals that can keep your practice HIPAA compliant.
The solution: seamless HIPAA compliant email encryption.
Email is still one of the most effective and common ways people communicate with one another. However, any email communication involving PHI must be secure to be HIPAA compliant.
Sometimes, this increased security means giving up emails’ usability design. Although, you can salvage it if you utilize the right email encryption solution.
Email encryption’s challenge has been making sure the emails are secure and the encryption is easy to use. Most solutions can’t resolve this challenge. Paubox does.
With Paubox Encrypted Email, all outbound emails are automatically encrypted, and recipients will receive your emails like any other ordinary email.
This seamless nature ensures that patients and physicians can continue to communicate easily with one another without the fear of the information being exploited. We make HIPAA compliant email easy!
