We had the opportunity to skype last year with Yabsera's birth mom and she told us he was born on September 4th so we are celebrating his birth today! He chose bowling, dad's "healthy" Mac and cheese, Oreo ice cream cake and Left Right Center. We ran out of time for LRC so we will extend his birthday wishes on into this week. Today I taught the birthing class for pregnant women living with HIV and we had women from three countries in Africa, a country in south east Asia and the US! It was a great class. One of the women brought me Ethiopian food which was amazing. I brought some home to my kids and it occurred to me that 11 years ago today we brought Michael and Yabsera home to meet their brother and sisters and many friends. I love these photos of everyone waiting at the airport and then we appear with the new siblings. And no one knows just how exhausted we are. (Except my friend Barb. I miss Barb so much.) It's fun to really look at the faces in these pictures. There is so much love that's going to happen in the next 11 years. Way more than one can even imagine. My patient wanted to feed my Ethiopian children. Because food is love in Ethiopia. Yeah I was pretty much a puddle tonight watching my baby boy finish elementary school. The ceremony was so sweet and the words were so meaningful. I loved how the teacher said that as the kids enter adolescence - some of them might get lost - and they can always come back to Bromwell to remember who they are. And the people there will always be there if they need them. Then the kids played a giant football game - with all the new 6th graders and Cal. Beautiful night to wrap up our time as parents of elementary school-aged children. I miss this moment and all the moments that lead up to this already. Mostly we only get to see the joy and celebrations on these platforms. But you and I both know that there are layers of challenges, late nights, early mornings, tears of exhaustion and frustration, critical cookie baking sessions when a paper is due (in lieu of starting the paper), juggling jobs, sports, and watching little brothers; worry and perseverating on decisions like "Waffle Brothers or Illegal Petes?" to where to spend the next 5 years of your life; there is struggle, heartache, sorrow, and significant loss; so many creative ideas, and working night and day to pull them off; so many seasons of so many TV shows watched with big bowls of popcorn; tears, dreams, failures, successes; illness, doctors, get well wishes; snuggles with siblings, friends, and Booker and so very very much love and laughter. Michael said "You only have a few more graduations left mom!" I said, "Oh no, that list is endless! You'll see!" Mark and I are so incredibly proud of our beautiful son as he graduates from middle school and becomes a high schooler. He will attend East High next year. I wish his grandpa Ato Ashango in Ethiopia could have seen him walk across the stage last Thursday. Most of the world has no idea how far this guy has come. This is my last girl headed to Prom #9 for the Barr kids. I love that her girlfriends are hanging out making corsages and boutonnières, doing hair and make up and discussing who fell asleep during the AP Stats test yesterday. I got home today and Yabsera said, "Mom! I have something to tell you! Today was a good day!" I said, "That's great! What made it so good?" He said, "Nothing, it's just a good normal day. I have a good life." And then he showed me what he wrote on the chalk board in the kitchen. And made note of the quote "Wishing you Peace and Harmony - a quote by Yabsera Barr." Then he hugged me.
