Keeping my promise to share some more wholesome MCU fanfics to cancel out all the toxicity I dumped on here two days ago. Starting off with an author, as he has written quite a few really good fics. Here are the cliffnotes of some of my favorites:

Wanda’s Elegy - a meta commentary on WandaVision with POVs from both Agatha and Hayward about Wanda.

Being Kinder to Myself - Wanda, absolutely crushed by the insurmountable guilt she feels after what she did to Westview, is approached by a physical manifestation of her powers that helps her get her head on straight

A Real Chance - Kang rants about how many timelines the TVA had to prune in order to get to the one where Wanda was completely abandoned so WandaVision could happen

Because I Knew You - at the end of No Way Home, Wanda senses Strange’s mindwiping spell and uses the Darkhold to fight it off. She then looks into why it was cast and ends up befriending Peter and beginning to heal

What If... Multiverse of Madness: The Clea Cut - a sequel to the one right above. Instead of Wanda, the people hunting America Chavez are Clea and Mordo. Also, instead of Earth-838, the main parallel universe is one that actually riffs on the MCU rather than using legacy characters who weren’t in it before

What If... Wanda Cast the No Way Home Spell? - Wanda and Peter get to know one another at Tony’s funeral. Unfortunately, WandaVision still happens, but after Wanda hears about Peter’s identity being exposed she comes out of hiding and ends up being the one to perform the mindwiping spell.

To offer some praise to the last one, I think it solves a really big issue with No Way Home. That being, if the mindwiping spell came from the Darkhold, as it does in this fic, then that a) explains why it has never been used before, and b) eliminates the icky ethical questions of why good sorcerers have such a spell.

So yeah, clearly this author really likes the idea of Wanda and Peter Parker becoming friends. I have to say, I really love it too, so if you’re a fan of either character, I’d recommend reading his stuff.

In the aftermath of a multiversal war, many people were displaced. During that time the Vishanti of Earth-6561, a universe with no heroes and its sorcerers being pure evil decided to select sorcerers from these displaced variants and bring them to their universe to serve as its protectors and the sorcerers supremes.All these sorcerers have in common is that they could work great as a team if they let side their differences.

(This way everyone gets to do whatever they want with their characters without having to worry about canon of any sort : ).)

Sometimes, I play them videosgames

I've been trying a bunch of Steam Next Fest demos and I must crown three kings:

I've had my eye on Mohrta for a while and it does not disappoint. A little bit of collision jank and some performance quibbles, but great levels, satisfying gunplay and very intriguing setting. The sound design deserves special mention, it really sells the weird worlds you're traipsing through.

HARK THE GHOUL has the chonky graphics I crave, and is also a fantastically weird setting that is very compelling. I find King's Field type games usually a bit on the simplistic side mechanically, but with the kick and the various items/weapon types, this one spices thing up and I want to see where it goes.

Poke ALL Toads is a decent puzzler and I enjoyed solving how to avoid retribution while annoying all amphibians, but what really got me was the wonderful animation work. Just peak charm on every frame that had me failing on purpose so I could see every animated interaction of this smug little pest of a fairy (gave me that Battle Chess nostalgia, but better because toad-based puzzling).

Not quite a king, but Project Silverfish gets honorary Baron status:

It's got very good atmosphere and I think it's shaping up great but I feel like it's missing a *something* to really take off, just not sure what (it could just be a polish thing, this is apparently quite the early build). Keeping an eye on it though, it's got the potential for kingliness.

Crypt of Shadows (2024), on sale 10/16

Marvel's annual Halloween anthology, Crypt of Shadows, returns this year, with Agatha Harkness as the new host and narrator. Previous installments featured Victor Strange, Dr. Strange's vampiric brother who spent years trapped as a ghost in the titular crypt. Following the events of Blood Hunt, Victor escaped his prison, only to be taken captive by Baron Mordo. Now, Agatha is filling his role in a framing narrative written by Steve Orlando-- and based on the synopsis, I suspect that this will tie into her upcoming storyline in Scarlet Witch.

Wanda and Vision will be featured in one of the anthology's short stories. It looks like they'll be getting ready for a Halloween party when an unexpected guest arrives through the Last Door-- Joshua Jovan, an original character from the M C U who's making his first appearance in Marvel comics. I don't have any particular feelings about that, but I would be remiss if I didn't point out Wanda's costume-- the idea of witches wearing pointed hats is ahistorical, and while its exact origins are not known, many such images and characters, even in modern media, are based on racist and/or anti-semitic tropes. I don't think that this sort of costume is inherently problematic, but it's not something I would choose for Wanda. This is a good example of a situation where we could be making more thoughtful decisions, based on the character's race and relationship to witch tropes and archetypes.

It's always really difficult to choose between An Opera of Fear and A Cold Alliance for my favourite Sly 3 episode, but it's safe to say that Flight of Fancy is easily the most nostalgic. Not because it's rooted in my childhood memories (it is) but in the sense that it shares elements with episodes from Sly 2 during a game which presents the gang at the peak of their career. Let's discuss

I think we can all agree that the series very effectively presents the gang's development, not only as individual characters, but also as a team of thieves. Sly 1 shows the gang as teens during their first set of adventures which sprout from Sly's desire for vengeance. They make many mistakes, they don't really have planned heists or jobs - Sly just casually goes into every level breaking shit and then faces off the big baddie - and they surpass their own expectations of themselves to defeat Clockwerk in the end. Then, Sly 2 covers a crucial point in the gang's career. It felt as if up until this point they hadn't truly fucked up so they went into it being very cocky, especially Sly. And when they got their asses handed to them by Neyla, getting separated tested their individual and collective limits.

In Sly 3, the gang has evolved to master thieves, capable enough to feel comfortable recruiting and as such mentoring strangers and also worthy enough to inherit an entire lineage's stolen loot. This is also shown in the missions, which up in scale and spectacle. It's no longer just "follow this villain" or "pickpocket this person". It's a combination of missions we grew accustomed to during Sly 2 like "follow Octavio and do recon under time pressure", or something completely new. Right off the bat, for example, we send a ferris wheel rolling across Venice squashing guards in its way, like this is just a mission not Thunderbeak or something. Every Sly 3 mission evolves explosions, high-tech and the eventual mini boss-fight.

So it's then a bit surprising to see the gang reverting to their sneakier, more subtle ways during Flight of Fancy. That's not to say we don't have explosions and thrill in the episode (the dogfights, Muggshot vs Carmelita, wolf-riding, shooting literal fucking windmills into blimps), but the way they choose to sabotage the competition due to how delicate its internal politics are creates some nostalgia. Paddling around the sewers in a blow-up rowboat and breaking into the pilots' rooms is very Sly 2. It felt like something 18 year old Sly would do. Also, scaling the Baron's castle harks back to Sly 1's platforming and is reminiscent of how small Sly would seem when approaching a villain's daunting lair.

The design choices for the Netherlands seem primitive too, enhanced by the fact that we're in the countryside. I feel like there's that Sly 1 and 2 rule of thumb at play here, where Sucker Punch chose the aesthetic or genre first and then chose the location. For example, they wanted a spooky level in Sly 2 so they chose Prague which would accommodate the genre through its architecture and gothic character. That allowed them to exaggerate a lot in terms of level design. And it's the same for Flight of Fancy, where we have a spooky castle on top of a very cartoony hill and you can hide under haystacks. Oppositely, the rest of the game's levels seem to have departed from the previous entries' design principle (except Kaine Island, which is fully fictional). It feels as if SP chose Venice and wanted to play up how European it is, or the wilderness of the Australian outback but without any radical stylistic choices. The genres are explored through the narrative, not through design.

Lastly, let's close off with some Thieves in Time slander because it wouldn't be a signature me tumblr essay without it. If we really use the entirety of our brain power and manage to look past all of the game's bullshit, one additional flaw would be how it doesn't consider the gang's development when telling its story. I'm not saying that in the series' fourth game the gang should have been infallible or indestructible due to achieving master thief status in Sly 3, but here the mistakes they make feel so unnecessarily stupid and like shit they wouldn't have done even in Sly 1. Falling for Penelope's schtick twice; Sly letting his guard down during the Le Paradox boss fight after the Contessa; whatever the fuck went down in Arabia... yea.

All OC's are just fill in characters. They'll most likely be mentioned but will have no major roll. These are people who live in and around the map, basically NPCs.

Somehow further Anagram Silliness.

Having had a somewhat silly sort of week, with breaking various sorts of bad news to various people, some of them very small, I find myself in need of further ridiculous distraction.

So, in another episode of the series for which nobody asked, here are some further anagrammatical adventures.

Reika Tsukihana of @reikatsukihana is an anagram of "Hark, I Ask Auntie", which possibly reflects some close family bonds. More concerning is "I Sneak Haiku Art", which suggests Reika is involved in some shady Hingan poetry smuggling operations. Really very worrying is "Kink Hiatus Area", which is probably something provided at certain RP venues for people to take an occasional break, but not the sort of place that Reika would frequent.

Li'daen Hena of @ae-fond-seeker is an anagram of "Linen Ahead", which suggests she's been working on her weaving skills. But my absolute favourite would have to be "An Ideal Hen", although I suspect Li'daen would not be impressed at the title.

Nomin Tal Kheeriin of @paintedscales reveals a wish that we should "Rethink Minion Ale", which I think is a reasonable response to excessive sponsored promotions. However, as befits her archery skills, she does also intend to "Hone Interlink Aim".

Resi Aria of @elfie-kitten informs us of her capacity to magically raise a breeze with "I, A Raiser". And then goes onto demonstrate it with the command "Arise Air".

Baron Silvaineaux de Rosaire of @houserosaire will not allow his military subordinates to gainsay his strategies - "Auxiliaries Bar No Endeavours". However he has also forbidden them from prettifying aquatic mammals with jewellery - "Auxiliaries Adorn No Beavers" - which the beavers probably appreciated.

Finally, Stefan Delvanguard of @cadrenebula has learned that wrapping up warm is useful in colder climates - "Fur Lends Advantage". Despite his scholarly appearance, clearly Stefan isn't afraid to complain if he feels ill-treated and often "Adds A Vengeful Rant". Sometimes he feels a bit unhappy with how things have gone, seeing them as simultaneously stressful and dull - "An Eventful Sad Drag" one might say. But most cryptic of all, we must know that "Fate Lends Vanguard"... Make of that what you will.
