1913 Adolph de Meyer, La Marchesa Luisa Casati (aka La Casati) photographed with her head resting on her arms, with pearls draped over her arms.
"Finally, Luisa was photographed. Baron Adolph de Meyer was internationally renowned. The photo he took of Luisa in 1912 in Venice went around the world. A necklace of pearls wrapped around her wrists, her chin resting on her arms crossed, the gaze of the marquise is riveted to the lens. Her pupils, which she now dilated every day with drops of belladonna in defiance of the danger of ending up blind, hypnotize us. It is this same look that seems to be captured on the different paintings, the one she wanted to show, not that of a lioness or a tigress but of a mysterious and implacable woman. Because Luisa wanted to control her image. Deep down, she took herself very seriously. » (x)

Well-born and educated at Eton and the Slade School of Art, W.B. Ellis Ranken 1881/1941 had an idyllic childhood in a wealthy family living on vast estates in Scotland and England.
The Young Polo Player, 1920s
At the Slade 1899/1903, he met Ernest Thesiger, his lover and friend who would remain a part of his lifelong inner circle. Thesiger married Janette, one of Ranken's three sisters, in 1917
Ernest Thesiger,
In 1907, he moved to Chelsea to live among the Edwardian aesthetes. The gay photographer Baron De Meyer and his wife, Olga, became close friends. John Singer Sargent, took him under his wing, their studios were just a stone's throw away
Young Man Sketching 1920s.
Ranken's many clients and friends were gay, lesbian or bisexual. They included composer Cole Porter; writer Violet Keppel Trefusis, lover of Vite Sackville-West;

Anne Morgan, daughter of the famous banker; decorator Elsie de Wolfe, Anne Morgan's lover; dynamic literary agent Elizabeth Marbury, also Wolfe's lover;

But more importantly, are William Lygon, Earl Beauchamp, and his 2nd son, Hugh Lygon, the model for Sebastian Flyte, the catalyst for Evelyn Waugh's most famous novel, Brideshead Revisited.

In this life of English high society and its privileges that is reflected in his paintings, Ranken was not openly or explicitly gay, as almost no one else was at the time, simply Ranken was a man of the world, aware of his own nature.

Although it is not proven, it is likely that these portraits of young people were of his lovers.

Baron Adolph de Meyer, Rose Dolores, Vogue, May 1919.
Caption: Eager-eyed from under her bridal veil, she gazes in the fortune-telling crystal, hoping to see her dreams there in the clear yet mystery-filled glass. Fastening the draping veil of rose point lace are jeweled wings of platinum set solidly with diamonds and only Cartier could have devised the flexible setting.
