Best of 2023 - Band I've finally been able to get into this year
It's KEN mode!
I feel like Void is probably one of the band's more accessible albums, but I'm looking forward to exploring their back catalogue. They make interesting extreme 'noise rock' with hardcore and industrial influences, while still being very much their own thing (and they've been re-working a lot of their live material to take into account they now have a full time keyboardist in the band!). Plus by all accounts, they are Good People (pals with Vile Creature and Lingua Ignota, for example).
youtube
Honourable mention to Taylor Swift - I figured I should finally find out what all the fuss was about, so I sat down (in the car) and listened to the album Midnights... Look, I get it. It's very polished, its interesting musically, and the wordplay is solid. I get why people like it, but... it's not for me. Some of that is musically (again, Taylor is a very competant vocalist, but if I'm listening to this kind of music, I feel like Lana Del Ray or Miley Cyrus both have better voices and write more engaging music for me), but I suspect a lot of it comes down to the content as well; I'm always going to connect more with the wider themes on albums like Call Down The Sun than I am to something more autobiographical like Midnights, I suspect...
(my husband now says he will send me anything funny and Taylor Swift related he finds because I'm now the only person he knows who's actually listened to a Taylor Swift album... 😜)
This year? I'm going to try my hardest to get into Escuela Grind - by all rights, they should absolutely be my jam; shouty vocalist, keen understanding of the history of the genres they play in, a collab with Barney from Napalm Death (!), and an EP called PPOOWWEERRVVIIOOLLEENNCCEE... what's not to like? For whatever reason, I've bounced off their music so far, but I will persist!

My brain tells me these are two different people.
The painfully polite guy down the street from Birmingham on the left and on the right one of the best death metal screamers from the grindcore band Napalm Death.

I mean just listen to him talk. He's going to get you a nice cuppa and ask you how your gran has been since the hip surgery.

Hello! Just wondering about the song Evelyn, do you know if it is on the Demo (on Outlaw gentlemen and shady ladies) or Studio version (on Beyond hell/Above heaven) that we hear Michael growl? I have heard it is on demo but Spotifys lyrics has written greenway. Thanks in advance and love your blog!
Hello, yes
The Demo version is done by Michael.
The Studio version is Barney - which he did rewrite some lyrics but it was literally just changing a couple of words.
Personally, I like Michael's version better. His growl is deeper and gives literal chills. He legit sounds demonic. In comparison, Barney's growl sounds more dog-yappy. Almost like he's rushing to get the words out. That may be because Michael wrote it and felt more comfortable with the timing. Also, for obvious reasons, Michael's growling transitions more smoothly to his own singing. There's less stark contrast.
But that's just my opinion. Give it a listen with some earbuds in and let me know what you guys think!
Thanks for the ask Anon! 🤘

EP Review: DDEEAATTHHMMEETTAALL by Escuela Grind (MNRK Heavy)
US based basement punks Escuela Grind will release their brand new EP, titled DDEEAATTHHMMEETTAALL on January 12th via MNRK Heavy. The band’s third genre-based EP instalment, DDEEAATTHHMMEETTAALL of course tackles death metal, one of the most important and influential metal subgenres for each of the members. This riproaring four-song collection showcases their immediate songwriting growth from…

We must protect this man at all costs. And I seriously just read that as, "I sang until my eyes pooped".
