Greenpeace y su lucha para proteger a los tiburones en Nueva Jersey

El equipo de Greenpeace en los Estados Unidos, lucha denodadamente por proteger a los tiburones que se reproducen en las bahías traseras y en los pantanos costeros de Nueva Jersey. ¡Hoy conocerlos es una invitación a quererlos y a sumarse activamente en su protección!

Cuidar a los tiburones que habitan en la Bahía de Nueva Jersey es de crucial importancia para los ecosistemas marinos. Por ello, Greenpeace se ha esforzado con ahínco para lograr vías concretas de protección para la especie en la región.

La parte trasera de la Bahía de Nueva Jersey desborda de múltiples especies de tiburones y sirve como criadero, proporcionando abundantes recursos alimenticios a las crías en crecimiento. El área es como un gran vivero natural en donde sobreabunda una rica fauna y flora marina.

Nueva Jersey posee 200,000 hectáreas de marismas costeras. Estos hábitats se componen de estuarios que limpian el agua y actúan como una defensa de primera línea contra la fuerza de las olas entrantes para las comunidades que viven en las zonas costeras. Los interesantes beneficios económicos de esta área son impulsados a través de la pesca y la recreación.

Las especies de tiburones que pueblan la Bahía de New Jersey

Las masas de agua salada en calma y de poca profundidad, como Barnegat Bay y Little Egg Harbor, crean las condiciones perfectas para las crías de las especies de tiburón toro, mielga y tiburón trozo. Los juveniles, también conocidos como cachorros, no reciben los cuidados de la madre después de nacer , por lo que intentarán encontrar refugio entre los pastos de los pantanos. Los humedales son ricos en recursos y también proporcionan abundantes alimentos , como peces, crustáceos y rayas, lo que mejora considerablemente las chances de supervivencia de las crías de tiburón.

Los tiburones más jóvenes generalmente suelen permanecer en el estuario para crecer en tamaño, confianza y habilidad durante casi un año antes de nadar hacia el mar abierto, donde la vida será un poco más desafiante y peligrosa. Algunos depredadores como el tiburón blanco y el mako nadan acechando en las profundidades y gustosos no dudarán en hacer una comida con sus primos más jóvenes y pequeños que se lanzan al mar.

Los jóvenes tiburones que sobreviven a esta primera incursión en el Océano Atlántico suelen regresar tiempo más tarde a su bahía de nacimiento para pasar allí una segunda temporada de maduración. Luego de ello, pasarán sus vidas en el mar.

Los científicos y su lucha para proteger la especie

Los biólogos han estado rastreando los movimientos de los tiburones usando tecnología de vanguardia durante largos años. Para conocer cómo se obtienen los datos sobre cómo los tiburones habitan los humedales costeros y las bahías traseras de Nueva Jersey, Greenpeace trabajó en un video con Keith Dunton, profesor de biología en la Universidad de Monmouth .

El Dr. Dunton, explicó en el video que las “etiquetas de tiburón” se componen de pequeños dispositivos implantados que envían señales o “pings” acústicos. Estas señales o “pings” son captadas por sensores especiales a lo largo de la costa este para que los investigadores puedan monitorear las rutas oceánicas o viajes de los tiburones, algo que permite al equipo del Dr. Dunton ver cómo se desplazan los tiburones a través de los pantanos de Nueva Jersey y a lo largo de toda la línea costera.

“Los tiburones dan a luz crías en la bahía, porque allí existe un hábitat más tranquilo y abundante en alimentos. Los más jóvenes pasan casi un año creciendo y alimentándose aquí, y luego empiezan su marcha al océano. Algunos regresarán en su segundo año de vida”. indicó el Dr Dunton

La importancia de restaurar el hábitat de los tiburones

A raíz del cambio climático en la Bahía impactan tormentas más frecuentes e impredecibles y se ha dado una aceleración del aumento del nivel del mar . Estos fenómenos han propiciado a que muchas de las marismas de Nueva Jersey se estén ahogando. Si las grandes extensiones de hierba de la Bahía continúan degradándose sin control, ya no podrán proporcionar los recursos de crianza y las condiciones necesarias para sustentar a los tiburones y muchas otras importantes especies.

Greenpeace está juntando fondos para utilizar más soluciones naturales innovadoras para ayudar a que las marismas se restauren y persistan. Una técnica de vanguardia que hace uso de sedimentos dragados de canales de botes obstruidos para dar un impulso a los pantanos en dificultades, ha hecho posible la restauración de 60 acres de pantanos en Fortescue y Avalon. Con resultados prometedores, se está trabajando en la expansión de la técnica a otros sitios mientras se lucha por políticas adicionales efectivas que protejan y restablezcan los hábitats de la Bahía de Nueva Jersey .

El Dr Dunton afirmó como conclusión que “a pesar de que la industria del entretenimiento retrata a estos peces como villanos implacables, nuestro miedo a los tiburones debería verse eclipsado por un pensamiento aún más preocupante o aterrador: el de un mundo sin ellos”.

“A New Jersey Connection" (Thurs) March 11th, 1943 (Part 1of 2) 80 Years Ago, Today: We have two ships sunk individually, and as we mentioned yesterday, Convoy HX-228 was in for another rough day. That attack will be covered in Part 2 today. Leading off, we go to the Caribbean, 25 miles northwest of Julian, Cuba, where the Honduran steamer “SS Olancho” is picked off and sunk by U-183 (IXC/40). With her controls smashed, and the engines no responding, she steams in a left-hand circle several times before going to the bottom with a second torpedo. The ship goes to the bottom carrying entire logs of gorgeous mahogany.... and about 7.4 MILLION bananas. Regrettably, she also takes five of her crewmen, as well. One of these men was hit by the ship’s propeller, which most likely resulted in a crushing injury; he dies after rescue in a lifeboat. 34 men in boats or rafts are picked up by the Honduran steamer “SS Choluteca." The last 7, clinging to wreckage, are rescued two days later by the USS Absecon (AVP-23) a Barnegat-Class seaplane tender of the US Navy. The ship is named for Absecon Inlet, adjacent to Atlantic City, in Atlantic County, New Jersey; the class of ships is named for famed Barnegat Inlet, in Ocean County, NJ. All told, 41 men survive the ordeal. Half a world away, we go to the Indian Ocean, 122 miles east of Richards Bay, South Africa. The British steamer “SS Aelybryn” is running alone, bound for Durban. At five years old, she’s already a hardened combat veteran, having survived a torpedo from U-556 (VIIC) in May, 1941. One of her crew was killed, but she stayed afloat, was repaired, and put back in the fight. Now, however... her number comes up for the last time. U-160 makes the Aelybryn her 31st victim. This time, nine men are killed, and the ship slips beneath the waves. 32 survivors are rescued by the Portuguese passenger steamer “SS Lourenço Marques."
