Y'know, the problem with people not properly reading the books and getting all their info from youtubers and other tiktoks and maybe the wiki... ok, well, there are many many many problems with that. But one of the biggest problems is that certain theories such as the maester anti-magic conspiracy and the southron ambitions conspiracy -- which are not originally fan-created but actually relayed in the books by some very odd people (Archmaester Marwyn and Barbrey Dustin), who are both somewhat paranoid and have no other sources backing them up -- therefore these theories are rather untenable, and yet are likely to have some truth to them nevertheless, because otherwise why would GRRM include them in the books in the first place? -- anyway, these theories lose their context and their references and thus become entirely nonsensical.

Yes, the maesters likely finished off the dragons. But they didn't start the death of the dragons, that was the Targaryens themselves. The chaotic self-destructive nature of the Dance allowed for the anti-magic archmaesters (it's not all maesters! most maesters probably have no idea) to have cover when they put their plan into motion. If there had still been 20 living dragons and not only 4 (2 wild, one gone feral, and the last only newly hatched), then baby Laena's egg hatching a monstrous mutant or Morning dying mysteriously in less than two decades (probably far less, maybe under 10 years; I wouldn't be surprised if she died before Rhaena remarried) wouldn't have been such devastating events. If Aegon III didn't have such intense dragon-related trauma because of the Dance, he might have acted faster to restore the dragon population, and not too little too late. (It remains to be told what the "debacle" with the nine mages was, but most likely it destroyed many potentially viable dragon eggs.) And most notably, the presence of dragons is related to the expression of magic in the world-- it's possible the population crash resulted a dramatic reduction in magic levels, and thus was an element in the birth of warped or stunted dragons as much as whatever the maesters did.

As for southron ambitions, what's canon is that Barbrey believes Rickard Stark's Maester Walys (who might be the bastard of Archmaester Walgrave and a Hightower girl), encouraged Rickard to betroth Brandon to Cat and Lyanna to Robert for "southron ambitions" purposes, and that she believes the Citadel sent Walys north to do this. The theory (not stated in the book, unproven) is that all the cross-Great House betrothals in the pre-Rebellion era (including Tywin's attempt to betroth Jaime to Lysa) were to establish a bloc that would be able to stand against the Targaryens, and that this was a Citadel-directed project.

And somehow these two separate theories, separated from their original context, have melded into this unholy ignorant and paranoid conspiracy of "the Hightowers and maesters have been behind the deaths of all the Targaryens in history, and also created the bias against women rulers" and "the maesters destroyed the Starks too"??? Tiktok is wild.

Really fascinating "attempted seduction" type flavour to the conversation between Roose and Theon as they travel to Barrowton. Obviously Roose wants Theon cleaned up a bit because he's bringing him to Barbrey Dustin as part of their plan to solidify Ramsay's claim via fake Arya, but his offer of a bath and some fine clothes ("Would you like that?", "Would you prefer to dress in silk and velvet? There was a time when you were fond of such, I do recall") coming on the heels of his story of raping Ramsay's mother under the lords right to the first night creates a fascinating parallel. As if Ramsay is the miller, Theon is his wife, and Roose is here to claim what he's owed. Especially as he chooses to flatter Theon, by placing him highest in the Theon-Roose-Ramsay hierarchy. Everything Ramsay has, Roose gave him. But according to Roose here, everything he has, Theon gave him. And from Theon's suspicious and frightened reaction it seems he reacts to this parallel on some level too.

It's a really interesting insight into Rooses character. He is attempting to manipulate Theon's (forced) loyalty here, but he does it in a way that perhaps belies his coldness, and implies he is somewhat more ruled by petty jealousy towards his horrifying son that it appears at first glance. He's not unaffected.

It's a crack in his armour, potentially, and it highlights another weakness. By fetching Theon, bringing him to Barrowton, naming him and handing him over to Barbrey Dustin's care he essentially "gives away" Theon, in the same way that Theon later does for Jeyne Poole (as Arya) when she marries Ramsay. But this parallel is unnoticed by Roose and Theon, and only available to the reader. Yet Barbrey seemingly upholds it, bringing Theon into her confidence, albeit in a limited manner, from here on out, and under her protection against Roose by ruling him out as "the killer" in Winterfell later too. Again unnoticed by Roose, who never doubts her.

But perhaps he should. Maybe he's overestimated the importance of nursing grudges, because he's blinded by his own against his son.
