The Monkees (The adventures of “the Pre-Fab Four”)
youtube
(Thanks to nosense66)
[All images are owned by Sony. Please don’t sue me]
In the 60s Beatlemania was running wild all over he world. Naturally, someone would want to ride those coattails for all they’re worth. While there were a few bands that were clones of the “Fab Four”, some TV executive saw the Beatles films and decided to base a TV series on them. This wasn’t the first time someone decided to base a TV show on the Beatles...
youtube
(Thanks to Christina S.)
...but it was the first live-action one. Naturally, hiring John, Paul, George, and Ringo would be prohibitively expensive (well, maybe not hiring Ringo), so a casting call went out for musicians with acting chops and comic timing (or, at the very least, comedic actors who could play) What they found were what the critics would call the “Pre-Fab Four” (I mean, they even misspelled Monkeys the way the boys from Liverpool misspelled Beetles)...
First we have Davey Jones, who was cast in the role of “Pretty boy”. If there was going to be a romantic entanglement, odds are it would involve Davey. Davey was primarily a singer, though he also played the minor percussion instruments such as tambourines and maracas (as well as bass and drums in the studio, though not on camera)
Next up is Peter Tork, who was cast as the comic relief (and given this was a comedy show, that mainly meant he either told or was the punchline for a number of the gags) and was also the innocent babe in the woods. Peter was one of three (two on camera) guitarists, and also played banjo and keyboards.
The other on-camera guitarist was Michael Nesmith (who the writers wanted to call Michael Woolhat due to his always-present headgear, which he wore to his audition to keep the hair out of his eyes) He was cast in the role of the smarter of the four.
Mike left the show near the end of its two-season run due to wanting the band to have more creative control over their music. Don’t despair too much, as Nesmith founded the production company Pacific Arts and was one of the pioneers of the music video. Additionally, Nesmith’s mother was the inventor of Liquid Paper (more commonly known as White-Out) and he got a sizable inheritance in the 80s.
Rounding out the band was their on-screen drummer Micky Dolenz who, along with Davey, sang the majority of the band’s hits. Micky played the role of the oddball. Not that he acted any stranger than the rest of the band, but most of the visual gags involved him (including having one outfit at the beginning of a scene, only to suddenly have a new one after the camera cuts away for a second) and he tended to have a number of funny voices.
The show was mostly slapstick-style humor in the same vein as the Marx Brothers (but not nearly that highbrow) that usually involved trying to find, going to, or coming from a paying gig (during which some improbable event happens and the band is swept up in it, such as Davey thwarting an assassination attempt on foreign royalty). During the show, one of the band’s studio hits would play as the wacky on-screen action happened...
youtube
(Thanks to themonkeesrule12345)
The band had a huge following (even after it was learned that most of the songs did not feature the band playing their own instruments in the studio) Even the Beatles were fans (the two bands got together when the Monkees went to England). The band (without Mike) remained an entity for two years after the show ended (though he did rejoin the band in 1989 and sporadically appeared in studio and on tour with the band until 2016)
To “celebrate” the Monkees’ 20th anniversary, someone tried to capture lightning in a bottle twice...
youtube
(Thanks to Internet Lurker)
It failed miserably, as The New Monkees lasted all of 13 episodes (judging by the intro, I’m surprised it lasted that long!)
As always, if you would like to see an episode (of The Monkees, NOT The New Monkees!) let me know!

Another Season of FESTIVATION Is Among Us
High On a Mountain Top - photo: Emily Sierra
The sun is finally warming the hills and if I open my windows wide enough, I can almost hear the tinny resonance of a banjo and taste the hops in the air. Although winter has lingered a bit longer than most of us Coloradans would like, that’s not stopping June’s arrival and with that comes the ever-loved Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
For almost forty-six years, festivarians have graced Telluride's Town Park to watch world-class musicians perform all genres of music, not just bluegrass. What started as a small festival where you could practically drive your car up to the stage and pitch a tent more than 2 inches from your neighbor, has turned into an epic event that sells out in just a matter of minutes.
Telluride through the Copper Kennedy lens - photo: Emily Sierra
I’ve been to Telluride Bluegrass Festival a few times now but last year, 2018, I had the honor of playing on mainstage Thursday morning with my band, The Railsplitters. At 9:30AM, the boys and I warmed up in the expansive green room under the stage, the five of us anxiously sweating all over our instruments. We’d all dreamt of playing Telluride Bluegrass before and now it was becoming a very unnerving reality. With a tight grasp on our cups of liquid courage, we took our positions across the front of mainstage and proceeded with the set we’d each been imagining since the start of our musical careers. As I looked out among the masses, I realized that I hadn’t yet fully comprehended the magnitude of this privilege. I was standing in the same spot that so many of my idols had stood over the years.
The Railsplitters on Mainstage - photo: Dancer Productions
In 1976, nine years before I was born, John Hartford played songs about the Mississippi River on that very stage. In 1985, my favorite vocalist of all time, Emmylou Harris played there with her band as I experienced my third month on Planet Earth. In the year 2000, as I was trying to pass my driver’s exam, Nickle Creek, a band who is essentially the same age as me, were literally blowing the crowd’s collective mind. Eighteen years later, I somehow found my way from the heart of the deep south onto a stage larger than my hopes and dreams.
Lauren wearing her new Crowleys in Telluride, CO - photo: Dancer Productions
If that stage could tell a story, it would be one filled with love and laughter and music and tears. It’s a story that continues with each year of festivation and as Telluride Bluegrass Festival continues to make history, festivarians and performers alike will continue writing the story of music together.

“THE KILLER WAS YOU ROSE” Akemi pointed aggressively at Rose. “ you the only one without an alibi and the poison found in the spilled Foundation power found in Leo’s room correlates perfectly to how Leo died” “ but how do you know it was her? ” Banjo questioned. “ just the night before Rose asked Leo if he wanted her to do his makeup” “ but I do everyone’s makeup” Rose scoffed. “ all except for Leo’s and Marinara’s. So the fact that you asked Leo of all people showed have already throwing up red flags especially after you called them stupid grumpy heads.“Akemi stated “ Leo went along with your plan figuring if you were going to attack him head-on he could take you, but you went with an approach that he wouldn’t coming. In the morning you did his makeup as you said but before then you previously put poison that would slowly absorb into his skin over the course of the day so when he died it would be nowhere near you.” “ that’s why he collapsed at lunch? “ Tai asked “ precisely, that’s why everyone thought it was Polina who was on food Duty for today.” “ but how can that be possible she cries after every death?” Jacob questioned “ all except this one” Akemi rebuttaled “ how do you know she ran away” “ that’s precisely how I know after all the other deaths she cried openly. So what would make her want to hide and cry now?” Rose started to shake and she was awfully silent“ it’s official it was Rose” Tai spoke “THAT MEANS VOTING TIME”Monojelly jumped up out of nowhere
In reality No one would have expected that the person who cried after every single death could cause one on her own hand. Her hands trembled, tears rolled down her face, her mascara begin to run. She desperately tried to wipe her eyes, this just cause her makeup to smear. “I DON’T WANT TO DIE”“UPUPUPUPUPUP PUNISHMENT TIME” Monojelly guffawed as Rose was drag by the neck.
A KILLER LOOK
Rose blinked a couple of times she was sat and chained in the beauticians chair. Monojelly appeared with makeup brushes. Grabbing a white he wiped away all of Rose’s makeup in one Swoop. Then four chains came out of nowhere. One ripped off her left arm then her right then her left leg then her right leg all pieces of her being dragged opposite areas. The first arm was being mash into a weird kind of pastel paste. The second grinded into some sort of fine powder. The left leg was getting squished into a pink liquid. And the last leg into a fine pink powder. Bones cracking could be heard with the sounds of screaming mixed in. The fine powder was brought to monojelly Label flesh tone R053, Monojelly harshly applied a layer while the other product flew to him. The Light rose powder was next, which he applied for eyeshadow as well as blush. Next came the pastel pink paste which was applied for lipstick. then the pink liquid which is a crudely made mascara which still had some tiny chunks of flesh left in it. Monojelly stepped away from his masterpiece to revealed Rose profusely bleeding from her torso. And who’s makeup looks like it was applied by a two year old.
Once again some of the he should be hers but MY PHONE DON’T CARE. Have a gift. Sorry for the ooc moments
holy FUCK what a brutal and creative execution.. i love it LMAO
“a killer look” is also a perfect name for that i love it sm!!!!! THANKS FOR WRITING STUFF FOR MY OCS I LIKE IT A LOT

A bullet is a very small lump of soft metal (probably already fragmented into little pieces when it hit) trying to wedge between two pieces of steel against the force of the propellant. Out there on the edge, separate from the rest …
…could describe Canadian trio The East Pointers’ new album Yours To Break every bit as much as their home of Prince Edward Island. The word eclectic gets bandied about a fair bit (and Plunger are as guilty as any) but this is eclectic with a capital E.
Tim and Koady Chaisson and Jake Charron combine elements of the traditional music they grew up listening to and playing with modern pop and dance, while managing to retain the distinctive qualities of each. Opener Wintergreen sees a picked banjo motif joined by poppy beats, ecstatic synth and high tremulous vocal for a light and frothy upbeat feel, that continues in the tight harmonies of If You’re Still In, I’m In (notwithstanding its banjo trills) and the polished nu countryish anthem Mystery Cove with a very modern octave-vaulting chorus and wordless woah-oh singalong bit. The pop gets beefed up in Halfway Tree, its banghra-style kick driving synths and rich three-part harmonies before vibrant trad fiddle gets in on the action for an Americana-Celt Sound System vibe. Airy tremolo-heavy guitar, trance piano chords and a slow heartbeat pulse underlie the emotional dreamy vocal melody of Elmira (a proper I’m-sure-I-know-this-one earworm) with guest Lyndsay Lou duetting with Tim.
So far, so millennial-beach-party-hatchback-advert good, but where Yours To Break steps outside good and into great (for Plunger at least) is the inclusion of five instrumentals (or as near as makes no odds). The triptych Country Cable leads off with an echt celtic folky guitar-and-fiddle phrase matched with stomp and tambourine for a dance-inflected trad feel; a quiet pause for breath precedes a double speed bodhran-style rhythm in Fortune And Favour, where fluid electric piano takes the lead in a jazzy jig rework; then a complex guitar line with pipe-like double stops and Steve Reich tricksy clapping closes out with Suspicion Confirmed. Staccato dancey piano chords and complex beats open the two-strand Power To Move with fiddle and banjo bringing the hoedown moves together with deep bass synth and spacey SFX, then a proper banging house breakdown heralds the manic fiddle jig of Rainbow Warrior, while (the almost instrumental) Before My Time mixes off-kilter banjo with hip-hop low-rider piano and beats while distant backing vocals add atmospheric textures, before dramatic rising piano accents lead to another hypnotic fiddletastic finish in Come Back For Your Home, and throbbing sequencer and muted kick lend a cinematic sweep to Light Bright, where lyrical fiddle and piano, and tinkling banjo highlights build into a rollicking ceilidh romp.
The closing S.O.S. (Save Our Sharks) opens to appropriately burbling undercurrents of synth and liquid piano chords, before a traditional sounding melody from echo-laden guitar is taken up by fiddle and electronic bodhran beat-cum-clapping, growing into a twining swirling swell, subsiding to a breathy ethereal finish.
The poppier bit of Yours To Break aren’t necessarily Plunger’s cup of tea but it’s all very well done, with slick production and top notch musicianship… and those instrumentals really are grin-inducingly something else.
Yours To Break is out on 25th October, on the usual streaming suspects and from here: https://www.eastpointers.ca/shop/yours-to-break-cd

BATIM Fic: ‘Bendy’s Big Surprise’
aka i can’t believe this is the longest thing i have written in several months
read it on AO3 here
In the war, Henry had often been behind enemy lines, time mostly spent in fear of his life. That’s where he was now.
This was somehow worse. At least back then, he knew who and what was trying to kill him.
Dust caked his lungs and ink fumes swirled through his head as he made his way through the studio corridors. That fall through the floor had done a number on his back, making every step send twinges up his legs. He wasn’t a young man anymore and this place seemed to enjoy reminding him of it. Eyes were on him everywhere; the cutouts, the soup cans, the dolls. All following him. He’d knock them aside, only for them to be back right where he left them a second later. Switches moved around. The tapes said different things every time they were played. Every creak of the floorboards whispered something to him. Henry tightened the grip on his axe, since he could depend on that a lot more than his grip on reality at this point.
As he walked by an open room, something flickered to life. Henry backtracked and looked in. Dusty chairs lay on their sides, shelves filled with reels lined the walls. To his right, a film projector was beaming something onto the screen covering the far wall. Henry watched the Sillyvision logo fade away and the title card appear:‘Bendy’s Big Surprise’, one of the first productions Henry had worked on. It was one he remembered fondly. Simple enough story. Bendy starts acting weird; goes around collecting stuff, little odds and ends. Everyone asks him what he’s doing with them. Bendy won’t tell. Alice suspects something bad, Boris is more optimistic. They get into such a spat that they don’t even notice when Bendy reveals his ‘surprise’. Henry couldn’t recall exactly what the surprise was.
The events played out onscreen, frame by frame, line by crackly line. The music plink-plunked along, Sammy’s signature banjo shining through. Henry remembered a big disagreement he had with Joey about the poses for ‘Big Surprise’. Joey had repeatedly insisted they were ‘too stiff’. Henry, still young and prideful, had taken offence. If he had drawn them any looser, he remembered yelling during one argument, the characters would just uncoil and fall to the ground in a heap of noodley limbs.
He missed those arguments.
The final few minutes of the reel were playing now, Bendy about to reveal his ‘surprise’. Alice and Boris were arguing, as expected, but they kept doing things that Henry didn’t remember from production. They kept glancing behind their backs, eyes darting around. Their dialogue was stilted, unnatural, and Henry could have sworn he heard Boris stumble over a line, looking as panicked as his black and white features would let him as he tried to find his place again. It was like they were being watched. Watched and judged. With the very strong possibility of punishment if they got it wrong.
Bendy wheeled something into frame, covered by a white sheet. In a typically exaggerated gesture, he reached over and tapped Boris on the shoulder. Boris turned his head quickly. A little too quickly. Bendy beckoned his friends over to the sheet, seemingly excited. Something seemed to be moving beneath it. Putting an end to the suspense, Bendy tore it off with a flourish.
It was Joey, looking just as he had all those years ago. It was a cartoon, but it was Joey. Henry definitely didn’t remember this.
Joey was strapped to an upright operating table, bound up with rope. Gadgets and gizmos grew out from the sides of the table, each more unnecessarily serrated than the last. Joey struggled against his bonds, wriggling his hands and feet as best he could. He looked out at Henry, his mouth open. Screaming. Henry couldn’t tell what he was saying. The plinky-plunky music swelled dramatically, violins creeping in, as Bendy flipped open a lid on the side to reveal a large button.
The demon turned his face to the camera with a big grin and pressed it.
The music became screeching and metallic as the shot switched back to Boris and Alice; they looked horrified as something thick and black sprayed them. Alice hid behind her hands but was betrayed by her stigmata, seeing everything. Boris seemed unable to look away, even as his face was coated with dark ichor. Henry felt the same way.
The music ceased suddenly and the shot cut back to Bendy. He was almost fully coated in the black liquid, only his mouth visible. That big grin was still there as he pressed the button again, switching the operating table off. One hand on his hip, he reached off screen and pulled back Joey’s severed head, holding it by tufts of ichor-soaked hair. Bendy’s head swiveled around again, looking out at the audience. At Henry. It cocked to one side, giggling. A final tinkle of piano played as the screen cut to black, with a few words picked out in delicate white:
He got what he deserved
The film sputtered out, and Henry was left in the dark. He could feel himself shaking. Turning, he saw a Bendy cutout in the doorway, backlit by the lights in the hallway. Henry cut it down and walked out, making sure to step on Bendy’s face.

The Floozies Are Better 4 U: An Interview with The Kings of Electro-Funk
The Floozies are Kings of Electro-Funk. I had the opportunity to catch their set on the Mysteryland last year, and I was blown away. The amount of groove inducing electro-funk has me vibing and dancing uncontrollably. They were one of the funkiest groups I’ve seen live, comparing them to the likes of GRiZ, Big Gigantic, Pretty Lights and other all time greats in the Electro-Funk space. Their sound had a bit more natural POP than the aforementioned greats. Electro-Funk is one of my favorite genres, and The Floozies are at the top of my list – their use of eclectic samples while still maintaining a funk rhythm is both impressive and mesmerizing.
The Floozies are made up two brothers – producer/guitarist Matt Hill and drummer Mark Hill. They’ve played the biggest stages, calling their music party rocking funk – energizing dace floors around the world. All of The Floozies music can be downloaded for free from www.flooziesduo.com. The two are gearing up for their upcoming album, FUNK JESUS, coming this fall.
They recently released their new single, Better 4 U, and it’s FIRE.
Better 4 U is about the moment when you realize you’ve let someone down, bringing yourself to admit to the mistake made. Doing it more than for self-improvement, but also for the sake of the the people that surround you. When you’re down, it’s important to realize that the people around you are then affected. Yourself and the ones around you deserve the best from you, and this will ultimately lead towards a path of happiness.Positivity and love should be your driving force.
I had the pleasure of interviewing these kings of funk below. You know the drill, click the play button on the soundcloud embed and read the interview below to get the FULL The Floozies experience. The first song on the embed below is their new single, Better 4 U. If you’re into as much electro-funk as I am, The Floozies is a MUST LISTEN.
INTERVIEW:
Where are you guys from and how has that shaped the musicians you are today?
Kansas. We have both been able to learn from teachers and musicians around us throughout our lives. Learning from them has definitely led us to where we are musically.
What instruments did you play when you were younger?
I played trombone, piano, guitar, bass, a bit of banjo, and of course drums. Matt did all the same except he didn’t play trombone or banjo. He can figure his way through any instrument pretty easily though.
Are there an instruments that you currently wish you COULD play?
I really want to learn flugelhorn! It sounds so dark and lovely and the finger method of trumpet/flugel are really intriguing to me, so I bought a flugelhorn. I haven’t had a chance to dive in yet. I think Russ Liquid is going to give me a lesson next time we are together though.
Tell us the story of how you started creating music on your computer?
We played and traveled as a live looping duo at first. For a long time. We just used a guitar and pedal for Matt and I accompanied with drums. It was incredibly difficult, but it had really great moments. The computer came way late as a means to make the live set better, so live computer creation happened basically once we figured out how it worked and saved up enough money.
Producing on the computer has been happening for a long time! I remember Matt making beats on an old casio keyboard with this way ahead of its time loop record function! We were little kids and he was making world class beats on our sisters cheap keyboard haha! i think thats when it started. Then years later, Matt made an album on a computer a long time before we ever tried to recreate it live. He made some really great albums that we never really even shared as the floozies. He is the type of guy that just keeps trying to figure everything out, so naturally, we have continued producing and also using the computer live.
What was your favorite studio moment when producing your new single, Better 4 U?
For me it was the moment Matt sent me the original vocal idea. Just in a voice message to my phone. I was on my way to the gym and I remember listening to it (10 second clip) of its bare form just over and over and over the whole way. I had goosebumps the entire drive.
What do you like to do when you’re simply hanging out – aside from music
We’ve been best friends since we were babies. Never fought or had problems. So anything really. We like to have our business meetings on the basketball court. We both love playing basketball, exploring cities, seeing cool things. A lot of us hanging out is just sharing ideas and laughing a lot. It’s a dream to tour with each other really.
Who are your musical influences?
Grew up listening to funk bands and some soul (thanks Mom!) such as: kool and the gang, p funk, earth wind and fire, michael jackson, temptations, all the good stuff.
After that, we’ve just pretty much listened to everything we can get! you can find inspiration in so much different music.
I love bluegrass stemming from going to see “The String Cheese Incident” back in the day. Too many to list in that category! We’ve both been influenced by Robert Glasper, Chris Cornell, Lettuce, Rick James, James Brown, D’ Angelo, Tower of Power just to name a few.
Who has been one of your favorite artists to collab with?
Ryan Zoidis from Lettuce. Not only an incredible sax player, but an awesome guy all around. His playing and presence always leave me with a smile.
What are some of your favorite venues to play and why?
All of them have character and beauty individually. We have memories in each one.
What are some of your favorite cities to play-in and why?
All of them have character and beauty individually. Exploring each city has been an incredible experience. I will say we just came back from Portland, Maine, and that whole area is just beautiful and lush and spacious.
Do you have a favorite festival you played this summer?
They were all great, I don’t like to compare moments much if you can’t tell ha. One festival that was different than the others greatly was Electric Forest. We brought out a live band performance for the 1st weekend performance. It was an incredibly challenging and beautiful show for us. The group killed it together and the crowd was really special on that day with us.
What DAW do you use and why?
Logic. It’s what we started with and I think it’s pretty.
You’re a two man group, do each of you have different strengths and weaknesses that play well off each other?
Yeah. Business wise especially! It seems that everything I lack ability for Matt can handle pretty easily and vice versa. I am really good with logistics and handling that side of it, Matt has a really creative big picture side for artwork, direction, merch, etc. Although there are definitely crossovers. Sometimes an artwork or merch idea will be mine. We have a good ability to share ideas and work them out together most especially. Together we make our best ideas in the end.
Live we are both strongest when together. We feed on each other and have so much fun when we play. We always know when to help each other with cues and stuff when things get musically challenging.
What is your favorite MIDI Controller or instrument to produce with right now?
We just got an Harpejii string instrument and its incredibly cool.
Do you have a key production tip for our young producers out there?
Make your own sounds and have fun with it.
What is your favorite color?
Green
What food do you eat the most?
salad at the moment
Do you have a favorite in-studio snack?
tea or coffee ha
What is your favorite social media platform and why?
I like Instagram because its well run and clean and pictures are neat.
What is next for The Floozies?

Right after that is our 2nd Powder Rangers tour which is two weeks every night in ski towns throughout Colorado! Every show sold out last year so that was fun.

Spacex has a test site near the Gulf in Texas, where they do engine assembly and testing, vertical takeoff and landing flight test, and anything liable to go BOOM. It’s very isolated, but is beginning to attract visitors. About falling over: with no fuel, no payload, and possibly no engine, thie ship would amount to a stainless steel balloon in a high wind. It might blow or fall over without much damage. Pick the pieces up and put them back together. The truth of the matter is, Clark was a showman who loved presenting his virtuosity with humor—in the mold of Victor Borge, maybe, who also knew that humor gets us ignorant bottom-dwellers to pay attention to such a highbrow thing as virtuosity.Philadelphia Phillies Red October Postseason 2022 shirt, hoodie, sweater, longsleeve and ladies t-shirt

A bullet is a very small lump of soft metal (probably already fragmented into little pieces when it hit) trying to wedge between two pieces of steel against the force of the propellant. It is going to get smeared. A force can be an applied force, or an object can experience a force as a result of acceleration. You feel an example of this in an elevator, when the elevator goes from not moving to going downward (a small acceleration), you feel “lighter” for a moment – the force between your feet and the floor is apparently smaller.
