Turns out this is an actual fern! Each plant has two leaves that float on the surface and one that hangs out underwater and functions as a root.

There’s a pile of rocks outside the herbarium building in Uppsala where I was working. This is because the lichenologist Einar Du Rietz collected So Many lichens on rocks that the herbarium couldn’t keep them all and disposed of the less useful ones here.

I am just continually blown away by the lichens in Uppsala. I found this big boi in the middle of town, on the ground beside the sidewalk.

I’m being sent to UPPSALA and HELSINKI for my JOB!! To read OLD BOOKS!!! I feel like I’m a young 18th century naturalist who has been sponsored by a benevolent aristocrat to sail around the world and look at cool stuff. 

I’m also gonna have some time to do touristy things so if anyone has recommendations for things I should see & do please let me know.
