Friday 9 August 1839
8 ¾
1 ¼
fair but dull morning F67° at 10 am breakfast at 10 ½ - Smith came at 11 – sent him about 1 thing or other – arranging the advertisement in the Xtiani paper about the ring etc. had him back at 12 till 1 ¾ - a lesson in Norsk and then looking over the map, and looking over the route to Drontheim [Nordstern] – no veritable shepherds in Norway as in the Pyrenees – the Peasants (Bonder) here send their songs and daughters or servants to take care of their cattle but the [Saeter] in the mountains here not like the cabanes [Saoussas Dabats couïlas] of the Pyrenees – the Fins come down to the great fair at Elverum in winter Lat. nearly 61° Long. nearly 30° to buy Xtiania merchandise – on the snow by the great road from here to Mindethen on the ice (on the lake) to Korsödegaard thence by the road on the snow to Elverum – 2 roods from here to Trondhjem [Trondheim]– and the new road thence to Stockholm by Upsala [Uppsala] opened lately –
On the T- road coloured red on my map (Lat. about 62°) Dovre Fjeld [Dovrefjell] is Tofte (Toffe as misprint) and the Peasant of Tofte one of the greatest in Norway – has a hundred cows – might reach Tofte the 3rd day – then stop to see Sneehaette – and then in one day from Tofte to Trondhjem [Trondheim] –S- went to dinner at 1 ¾ to return in 1 ¼ hour – wrote the above of today till now 2 20/.. having avancé my watch 20 minutes to the clocks here – then inking over Bremen memoranda till now 3 ¼ when S- had been come back from dinner a few minutes – then out – at 4 – to the booksellers’ shop – to see (chez Gulberg and Dzwonkowski) the large map of Norway by Captain Munthe and Ramm. ‘Kart over Norge af Captein [Kaptein] Munthe og Ramm’ – Mr. Jaeger had only 4 sheets –
August Friday 9 large – 2 species each – will be 18 sheets – only 3 months in the year that the mountains can be surveyed from middle of June to middle of September – Captain in the mountains now – near Bergen – it may be 8 or 10 years before the map is completed the 4 sheets imprimées par Malô ainé élève du Depot [Dépôt] de la guerre – Gravée par Pellicier à Paris. perpetual rain here ever since we went – sorry to be disappointed for the present – might probably see Norway another summer – not not next – should like to have a naturalist with us, if S- engaged, settled as an Instituteur as he himself thinks at Stavanger – expects for the 1st 3 years 300sp. a year for 6 hours a day – and altogether 3 months vacance per annum 1 month at midsummer and 1 at Xmas – a week at Easter etc. he had 400sp. a year as private tutor and board and lodging at Arendal – to writing to Jaeger to get us a naturalist i.e. a medecin – for the medical students are the only ones who study mineralogy and botany – Direct to ‘Messrs. Gulberg and Dzwonkowski à Christiania’ and within address my letter to Mr. Jaeger – He will send for the work on the mineralogy of Norway (1 large 4to. volume) for me to see tomorrow – Bought 2 (one for A- one for myself) little histories of Norway ‘af Andrèas Faye Sognepraest till [til] Holt ’ printed at Arendal, 1834. for the use of boys’ school – 1 vol. 12mo. – 4 marks each – and bought for 12 skillings a little small 8vo. or 12mo. (folded into 16 [feages]) geographical notice of Norway – advised his reducing the great map of Norway to a portable (tho’ still large) size – mounted for travellers – at from 30/. to 40/. English i.e. 8 or 10 species thalers – gave him the address of ‘Arrowsmith Geographer, strand, London’ as the greatest mappiste in Europe – came away at 5 35/.. sauntered a little way towards the botanic garden – afraid of rain – home at 6 – S- staid
SH:7/ML/TR/12/0022
looking over some views (not well lithographed but interesting as any views of N- are to us) left on our table by our ex-guide Mr. Poulson who, it seems would be glad to accompany us thro’ Norway – the vewis (1/2 4to. opening à l’Italien) printed here in 1836 ‘Paa Forfatterens Forlag. Troft hos Ludwig Risum’ Norge, fremstillet i lithographerede Billeder Efter Naturen. af P.F. Wergmann. (Billiderne ere ledsagede med beskrivende, text) Første Bind.
p. 12 vide. view of Rørvigkleven i Lister. Lister is a district along the sea in Christiansands[Kristiansand] = stift vide in my Götheborg [Gothenburg] – bought map Mandals [Ampt] i.e. Mandals Ampt (a province or shire) –
How striking that there should be in Norway a District or little division called Lister – Is this an ancient name? the Scene is a cottage and water and zigzag road up mountain one side [of narrow] vale - -A and I walked about the room perhaps ½ hour till 9 ¾ then till 12 10/.. she reading Laings’ Norway that we found on our table on returning home this afternoon and making extracts and I reading over Mr. Poulsons’ papers (nothing particular) and then inking over this book so[me] pages back – dull but fair till about 7pm and then some rain but not very much – F67 ¼° now at 12 ¼ tonight –

On this day in history: Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, most known for laying the groundwork for modern taxonomy, died on this day in 1778. You can still visit his Linnaeus Garden, the first botanical garden in Sweden, which blooms in Uppsala.
