Yes, I didn’t see it was upside-down until #afterthefact . Today included “looking after” - AKA having a delightful and happy time - with one 8-year-old, Ellie. I have known Ellie and her twin brother, Josiah since their second day of life and love them to pieces. This was my effort, which Ellie supervised in part (eg suggesting the boy stick his tongue out) and suggested giving to Josiah. They both play. She is shy of having her artwork on Instagram, although I adore it. This kind of loose, unfussy, relaxed picture-making is far from my natural inclination, so I know I should do more! This is a rebuke from me to myself. Some of my favourite animals are Australian and some aren’t. Albino echidnas are not common, God bless ‘em - but they do exist. The legs and feet representing yours truly prove I don’t flatter myself.😆I have long feet but they’re hopefully not proportional to the dimensions here! My focus was to represent the new Marc Newson for R M Williams 365 Yard Boot; his designs usually inspire live and longing in me. Come to think of it, he’s also another Australian native😄. ‘Funny little things,’ or ‘Strange-looking creatures’ are the kind of comments a hoo-man might make when observing the wondrous diversity of the animal kingdom. Just as surely, one must consider the question, ‘How do humans look to them?!’ I like imagining them making such remarks as, ‘The long danglies are here with those flat thingies to point at us, again!’ It probably wouldn’t look like this, but I’m claiming artistic license and imaginative license. This is the first page of my new sketchbook; a 200 gram paper, Fabriano hardback, somewhere in between A4 and A3. Every flipping double page is stitched. (Sound of blissful sighing). Title: “The Present Tension” - or “The Toilet Paper Chronicles” I don’t think I need to write any details regarding what this is about?? I am surprised by how clean I’ve kept the white spaces. Usually when I’m focused on being neat I inadvertently create lots of muck. I will say I am appalled by people who have deliberately taken an over-abundance of the basic necessities, forcing others to grasp and/or go without. Selfish behaviour is unhealthy for the soul. Waiver: I did NOT make the long list and am looking forward to seeing the art that won places.😍 I was thinking of a person living almost like a ghost in his own life. This is the final piece of my submission for the Folio Society’s and House of Illustration’s combined annual competition, which was to illustrate love poems this year. I find these embarrassing to look at now - and they’re only the efforts of the last few months, not a decade ago! Practising gouache and patterns. I added too much water to the background and damaged the paper, which isn’t intended for watery mediums. Oh, well. This is a consciously limited palette for me and is still bright! This might look like I was aiming for a Frida-esque woman but no. I had in mind the gorgeous skin of one of my ‘style gurus’, the writer, Zadie Smith @zadie_smith or even the model, Adwoah Aboah. @adwoaaboah . They both have adorable sprinklings of freckles. Freckles have an association with childhood but these women have elegance and sophistication. I love freckles. The prominent ears were intentional.
