Thai Singer-Songwriter Phum Viphurit Plays Music Hall of Williamsburg

Neo-soul singer-songwriter and guitarist Phum Viphurit was born in Bangkok and raised on the North Island of New Zealand before returning home to Thailand for college. Once there, he started writing songs and then began making a name for himself “by channeling the breezy sounds of artists like Mac DeMarco,” according to Rolling Stone, thanks to covers and a few originals posted to YouTube—“Viral success is as crazy as it seems, I kind of never saw it coming,” he says—which eventually led to the arrival of his debut full-length, the evocative, hooks-filled Manchild (stream it here), in 2017. Viphurit returned this past summer with an EP, Bangkok Balter Club (stream it here). “My life has changed drastically in the past year,” says Viphurit. “From the tours to the relationships around me, it was all one very colorful blur. This EP is very much inspired by the travel, people, movement and moods of this time.” He’s since embarked on his biggest North American tour to date, and with just three remaining appearances, Phum Viphurit headlines Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday night. Los Angeles singer-songwriter Estef opens the show.
