it's extremely funny to me that people are shitting on JoJo Siwa's rebrand by, among other things, comparing it unfavorably to Miley Cyrus' Bangerz era. I've heard several people give the take that Bangerz Miley was legitimately shocking and effective, while Karma feels like a weak attempt to do something similar and like... I can't help but think that a full decade of distance has completely distorted people's memory of the public reaction to Bangerz. Like I distinctly remember EVERYONE going in on Miley for that era. Literally all parties from all sides of american culture came together for a brief period of time in 2013 to dunk on her for being a white girl with no ass trying to twerk. She was cringe, she was trying too hard, she was too raunchy, she was appropriating black culture, she was using black women as props, the music sounded like shit. I cannot remember anyone in 2013 saying a single good thing about the Bangerz era so it makes absolutely no sense to me that people are acting like JoJo getting relentlessly shitted on, albeit for slightly different reasons, is a sign that her rebrand has failed and her career is over when Miley fully bounced back from that criticism and is now a goddamn grammy winner. What makes you think that JoJo's career arc will be any different? Like yes she's attracting a different kind of negative attention than Miley did but it's still the same principle, it's still just doing some crazy shit with the mindset of "all publicity is good publicity". You're still giving her earned media, you are literally getting played like a fiddle by this woman and giving her exactly what she wants. Oml in a decade's time JoJo will be putting out music people actually like and everyone will pretend like Karma was a genius career move and none of this ever happened because the cultural memory is ipad baby levels of abyssmal

Well, without even thinking about it too much, Bangerz era Miley, sorry XD! I also like basically any 80s style/darkwave/synthwave, regardless of the year, what can I say, I'm not that particular.

('On My Own' is the best one from Bangerz, 'Midnight Sky' is technically post-Bangerz but I like it as well. The fact both of those songs have a distinct trashy 80s-ness about them is unrelated XD!! Insulted when people only mention 'Wrecking Ball' and 'We Can't Stop', she has better songs but I guess it's a dumbass meme to make fun of her, don't mind my grumbling here XD!)

Hi everyone, today’s blog will be about the topic of my project which is about the evolution of Miley Cyrus. I want to analyse her changes and her trajectory by analysing her songs, her style and her audience. 

How does Miley Cyrus’ evolution manifested throughout her career? How did Miley Cyrus go from a disney pop star to a rock star and how did it manifest throughout her career ?

I will continue to think about a better question for my project but these two can show you what I want to talk about. 

For my sources, I’ll analyse her very first album : “Meet Miley Cyrus”, “Bangerz”, “Miley Cyrus and her dead Petz”, “Plastic Hearts” and “ATTENTION : MILEY LIVE”. 

All these albums clearly demonstrate evolution in her music. 

I will also use different articles that are about how controversial her “ Bangerz” era was, especially the “Wrecking Ball” controversy. 

The Album “ATTENTION”, is only composed by live performances; In the end of “23-Live” she talks to her public and she says “I think people when they think about me, they think of someone who even though that’s been a million different things, likes to be honest about where I am at every moment of my life” “Over the last fifteen plus years has been a lot of different things, a lot of different identities and all of those identities that I was trying on and seeing if they fit me [...] you all stood beside me”. This speech is perfect for my project because she says, herself, that she tried so many different things, that she has been a different person, or she created a different character many times throughout her career. 

As I said before, I also want to talk about her style evolution and refer to the “ mediation” chapter of the negus in order to see how her music influenced her style of clothes. Obviously all of this will lead to the audience chapter of the Negus. She doesn’t have the same fanbase when she played Hannah Montana than when she became more provocative or released rock music. 

I think I will organise my project by “eras” and explain her changes, the music genre, her style and what the audience thought about it, how it was received by the fans.
