Chapter 105: Banga
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Banga my love. BANGA MY BELOVED DO U UNDERSTAND HOW MANY FEELINGS IM FEELING RN?!?!?!?!?!?!
Titles that Banga should have: Best soldier, best chef, best mother, best companion, best friend, BEST GOD. SEE HOW SHE FIRED UP THE CROWD?!?!?
And the last seconds she shares with Vamola.... my heart 😭 Banga's been holding back so many emotions to keep up her tough appearance. I'm glad she was able to let go, even if it's just one last moment.

MOMMA’S WORDS REOCCUR TO ME:
growing up in cleveland mississippi meant that leaky had access to the only grammy museum outside of la. but really it meant that leaky grew up with humble beginnings, in a one story house that was full of love, laughter, and inspiration. andre and adelaide wright had been high school sweethearts, with andre giving up his dreams of being a full-time musician when they found out adelaide was pregnant, to then instead be the town mechanic. she was a nurse, he a mechanic during the days and blues musician at night, and though life was hectic. it was good.
leaky was taught all the necessities by his father, piano, bass, basic mechanic skills. he wanted his son to be well-rounded and thrive in the world. to build him up. and, like every southern town, high school football became the heart of the wright household. and early on they discovered that leaky was talented. he was good, he had promise for the future. and that he had.
so between practices, gardening, picking on his younger siblings, jamming with his father, and everything else in between, leaky looked at the future with hope, with optimism. and it seemed promising.
junior year of high school, leaky committed to alabama for football, full-ride, tight-end. play time wasn’t promised for him as a freshman, but nick saban personally mentioned his name for future championships. and to make everything better, his best friend jackson and girlfriend iona were accepted their senior year. they had plans to make tuscaloosa their home.
SURRENDER TO THE GOOD LORD: (tw death)
his freshman year was exciting, and a bit overwhelming. the golden boy of the town lost his way, getting caught up in the culture of college and partying. jackson, iona, and him were having the time of their life. and sure leaky wasn’t playing as much as he wanted, but it was enough for the time being.
and then tragedy struck, beginning of second semester of his freshman year, the three of them had been out one night, leaky felt he was on top of the world. but soon it fell into darkness, he remembered sliding into the backseat of the car, pressing a sloppy kiss to iona’s neck, and the next thing he was waking up in the hospital receiving the worst news of his life. jackson and iona were dead.
and then things continued downhill, ogden had attempted to recruit leaky as well, and reached out with a new offer. full playing time, full ride, and a fresh start. leaky couldn’t turn it down. it might be kissing his chance of the nfl behind, but he couldn’t turn down the stellar education ogden was offering him.
so after finishing his freshman year, leaky moved to portsmouth, summer training and all, began his life at ogden, this time taking a side role in his life. no longer the big fish in a small pond like his life in mississippi, he found his place easily. but he doesn’t talk about his freshman year, he doesn’t visit home, and though he seems to be a vibrant and stellar young man, he holds his cards close to his chest.
AND HE’LL WIPE YOUR SLATE CLEAN:
leaky is enjoying ogden, two years in he’s making friends, a star player, doing what he can. and yet there’s a nagging guilt, of not going home when he knows his family misses him, of not visiting iona and jackson’s families, of moving on. but he can’t face it, not yet. maybe one day he’ll be able to return home.
in fact that was the original plan, after his education, to return to cleveland and continue to build up his beloved city. like his father, leaky let’s his passions stay that way, it’s easier to keep the creativity without the pressure of it all. and instead he chose environmental science, something he hopes to be an asset for his community. leaky grew up gardening with his mother, and shares a deep love for the environment, and figures this is the best way to move forward.
GREER:
the two were casual friends. he’d see her at parties, and at school events. it’s hard not to notice the golden girl, especially with how visual leaky is on campus, always involved with an event or being seen in the advertising for the school. they got along fine, having friendships that crossed-over. he never knew her really well, but he respected her enough and enjoyed her presence. whenever she needed help or had a favor, leaky was more than ready to aid a hand. though it never seemed the two got below a surface-level friendship (to those who witnessed them anyway).
THE TRUSTY SIDEKICK:
you need a wingman? leaky is your guy. he’s charming and pleasant and can talk anyone up. need a favor? leaky is there easily fulfilling it as if it’s nothing to him. the guy is a confidant, a hype-man, a volunteer, he can transform himself into whatever you need and it never seems to bother him. and despite being a gifted football player, and smart guy, and seemingly everywhere on campus, he doesn’t steal the spotlight. he’s not the one you think of when you think of ogden, he lets others take the popularity, the jealous looks, the whispers. despite always being there, you might sometimes overlook him, maybe because he’s always there. but he seems to be a good guy, always offering a kind smile and nod of his head on campus, willing to help tutor you in math, and then lets you have all the glory when you ace the test. it almost seems like leaky is making himself out to be the pedestal that everyone sits on. the support that uplifts the hero, and yet still disappears in the crowd, never seeking glory for himself.
extra:
previous tasks found here
he’s always wearing a jacket because he can’t stand the cold
he wears a gold chain that was given to him by iona, he never takes it off
junior year recap:
found a note/torn out paper seemingly about greer during the haunted house
got drunk for the first time in years at the new year's party - holds guilt for penny ending up dead
found a bloody glove when looking for firewood
g told him to find penny's file in the dean's office
broke in with link and took a picture of it - haven't told anyone else
g put nova and leaky together before the rave and gave nova hints about leaky
surprisingly didn't sustain any injuries during the fire
logan confronted him afterward about the text she received about him
stayed in town for the summer to work at a farm and garden, left a few times to visit sassa

65th Grammy Awards: Best Progressive R&B Album
I had to take a minute to listen to most of these albums a couple times, and I've arrived at my assessment of them all. I'm also gonna try keeping my reviews brief, since long Tumblr posts are not really the vibe. Let's get into it.
"This Category recognizes excellence in albums of progressive vocal tracks derivative of R&B. This Category is intended for artists whose music includes the more progressive elements of R&B and may include samples and elements of hip-hop, rap, dance, and electronic music. It may also incorporate production elements found in pop, euro-pop, country, rock, folk, and alternative."
Operation Funk - Cory Henry
Based on the description of this category, I'm a little confused about why this album is included here. I enjoy the album, but there's an "old soul/funk" vibe to it that makes me question how "progressive" it truly is. This is giving 'traditional' more than it is progressive, to me.
Gemini Rights - Steve Lacy
Now this album is a personal favorite of last year. It feels like it was made specifically for the Black kid that grew up loving 2000s pop/rock. This is Steve's 2nd solo album following his work with The Internet', and it is refreshing to see him on top of the world with Bad Habit. However, I actually would not call this an R&B album at all. It is mostly a soft/pop rock with some moments of soul in it. And for that reason, I also don't think it fits the category as much as others.
Drones - Terrace Martin
This is the first album in the list that feels like Progressive R&B to me. Intricate production, electronic influences with hip hop undertones, features by several new-school acts, ending with a James Fauntleroy gospel song? Very much the embodiment of innovative, forward-thinking R&B. I enjoyed this project a lot.
Starfruit - Moonchild
Now we're at the 2nd album in the category that fits the description. This project is "cruising on a breezy Saturday afternoon" music. The lead singer's voice is airy and relaxing, and the production is funky, creative and jazzy. My one qualm.. despite her voice and the musicality.. there's somewhat of a monotony across this album.
Red Balloon - Tank and the Bangas
Y'aaaalllllllll.
I'm familiar with the name of this band, but I thought they might have been too left-field for me.
What a mistake that was.
This album is a sonic journey through Blackness. There's hip hop, funk, jazz, damn near gospel.. everything you need is in this album. And the versatility of Tank's voice is INSANE. How can one voice sound like the embodiment of Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Jazmine Sullivan and a lounge singer all on one project? Tank is her own person to be sure, I'm just saying she contains multitudes and I'm beyond impressed. I was sleep, but now I'm woke. A fusion like this also fits the progressive description to a T.
Who Should Win?
I don't need to deliberate. The winner better be Tank & The Bangas' Red Balloon album.
My 2nd choice would be Terrace Martin's Drones, and my 3rd Moonchild's Starfruit.
Let's see what they decide tomorrow.

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Happy Hump Day!
My favourite track of 2022 was ‘People’ by Libianca. Played it on my show a few months ago when I got to The Letter L. Last year, on this very page, I said it was a future No. 1 record. So glad to see it finally climbing up the UK Singles chart. Today, it’s at No. 7, up from No. 8. Nine weeks on the chart to date. Best song I’ve heard in ages and an important song about mental health! The first verse reads, “I've been drinking more alcohol for the past five days. Did you check on me? Now, did you look for me? I walked in the room, eyes are red and I don't smoke banga. Did you check on me? Now, did you notice me?”
Very interesting comments on Twitter from UK hip hop artist, Hardy Caprio, regarding problems he’s having with his record company. He was getting no joy from them, so he felt he had to go public. He’s now been contacted directly by EMI and they’ve said they’ll deal with his grievances “ethically”. Naturally, if you sign a bad recording contract, who’s fault is it? Yours! A good manager and/or music industry lawyer will steer you straight. There’s no need to sign a bad deal. In negotiations, you won’t get everything you want but, if you prioritise your deal-breakers, you’ll get most of what you want. If a record label want you badly enough, you can negotiate. If you’re on your knees begging someone for a record deal, the record label are under no obligation to offer you a good deal. They’ve got 20 kids waiting in reception who’ll sign anything to get signed. The thing is: it seems like Hardy’s label didn’t think he knew the terms of his own contract. Like he’s too dim to know the difference. So, they’re doing dodgy dealings and didn’t expect him to notice and/or complain. Hmm … not cool!
As you may have heard about or read about, Baroness Louise Casey conducted a year-long review of the Metropolitan Police, and her findings have been released this week. She has concluded that the Met is institutionally racist, sexist and homophobic and said the force may need to be broken up to "fix" it. Tell us something we don’t know, love! Amazingly, Cruella The Not-Very-Brave stood up in Parliament yesterday and said that ‘institutional racism’ is a politically charged term and she refuses to accept the report. What a very sad woman! We all know what she is. We all know what she wants to be. Once she’s finished in political life and written her autobiography, she can then get a non-executive job on some company board, and her kids will be set-up for life. It’s a fairly standard career plan.
Naturally, the worst part about going on a holiday or short break is coming home. Packing up your suitcase, saying goodbye to your hotel room and handing back your key is heart breaking! Nevertheless, you know me, I have a diary full of fun and things to look forward to. I’ve got so many beautiful people I want to see but I have to be careful about my planning. My work schedule is crazy and The Trouble has just started a new job, so I can’t go filling the diary with dinners or she’ll give me earache! Nevertheless, we’re almost at April and I can’t go a whole year without seeing my favourite people, so I need to get my organising hat on! You know what it’s like, vague plans don’t become actual arrangements unless you put a date and time on them!
Have a wonderful and well-endowed Wednesday. I love you all. Yes, a crazy, bald man loves and cares about you.

Men cheat the most.
Women cheat the best.
Men cheat for sex. It is usually rooted from having a feeling of enticement for someone new especially if the person is a complete opposite of their current partner. Romanticizing their despicable behavior as a result from the idea “ Hindi naman ako maghahanap ng iba kung hindi nagkukulang yung isa”. Prolly making sense but, is it really about the “pagkukulang nung isa” o talagang “mapaghanap ka?”. In addition to that, when men get cheated on, usually, they act like it’s the end of the world. They’ll start jumping from one person to another in order to feed their ego. With their best effort, they will try to project a facade built from phony arrogance showing that it’s a loss for the other party— that they are actually valuable, incomparable and irreplaceable.
while
Women cheat for love and affection — they crave for someone who is emotionally mature and reliable (and I think, this applies to both platonic and romantic relationships). Most of the women, possess great fortitude and forbearance allowing them to endure all kinds of torment. A blessing in disguise, most of the time, but also a curse. It is tailored to the idea that “you are expected to be that way because you are a ‘woman’. Lalake yan. Ikaw dapat umintindi dahil ikaw ang nakakaintindi.” When in fact, women’s capability to understand and accept things, even when there was a sudden change, shouldn’t be used and abused by letting them embrace pain and suffering that they don’t deserve. Ending, tinitiis nalang lahat. Bare minimums, unacceptable treatments, disrespect and so on in order to keep the relationship going until they end up empty and exhausted. So when they cheat, yung ipapalit, matic yan, kahit hindi performance at katawang pangkama, as long as that person is fully capable of handling with ultimate care for the depth of their emotions, ay pasok sa banga yan.
Well, sometimes it’s case to case basis naman.
Hahahaha minsan naman kase may mga babaeng hindot. Hindi marunong makuntento sa isa. Kaya ginawang lima. Charaught! Idk everything and I am, still, to learn lots of things pa. Still, cheating is a choice. Not an accident. It’s an effin’ choice! Ganto nalang siguro. For those people who are in a relationship rn, always be transparent. Communicate your feelings para maintindihan ng mga partner niyo yung kulang o wala. Hindi yung papupunan niyo sa tulong ng iba. But if you think that it’s no longer working, iwanan niyo nalang. Wag kayong umarteng loyal na demonyo habang ginagawang muntanga yung isang tao. Have the balls to speak up or be bold enough to walk away instead of prolonging the agony. We are all adults here. Let’s be responsible when it comes to relationships na pinapasok naten. Yung nalang hahahahaah sige bye. Goodnight mga bilat at mga burat🤍😘

Smoke Curling Around Us
@burningsheepcrown is a hazard, but we love her anyways. Here is another Dhruya fic prompted by her doodle, which you can find here.
Also I wrote this on my phone, I hope there aren’t any glaring typos I missed.
Tumblr media
///
Dhruya hissed in relief as the acrid burn of tobacco hit his lungs, a small relief to the migraine that was building in the back of his skull. The new IG had called for a meeting of the heads of all the divisions as well as some of the local heads of the smaller departments. And then proceeded to yell about them all being collectively incompetent.
Dhruva knew there were political machinations at play here that he was unaware of, but hearing the man lecturing them about not doing any work properly really made him want to scream. Not doing any work, as if Dhruva hadn't spent nearly a decade at this job, giving everything to it. Everything.
"I'm surprised you still smoke."
Dhruva stiffened at the sound of the voice that still made a regular appearance in his dreams. He resolutely stayed staring ahead as another body came to stand beside him. A flash of fire lit up his peripheral vision as Daya lit up his own cigarette and took a puff.
He took in another inhale of the cigarette. "Its only on rare occasions. These things will likely kill us anyways though."
Daya hummed. "Considering you apparently still work yourself to the bone, I still have my bet on you being your own cause of death."
Dhruva scoffed. "Did you sleep through that whole lecture we were just subjected to? Apparently we are useless and lazy."
"You know me Banga-" Daya started jovially.
"Don't." Dhruva cut in sharply, turning his head to glare at Daya.
The years had done wonders to the man, standing in front of him in a suit that made his shoulders seem incredibly broad. He had shaved some of the hair at his sides, and there were even a few flecks of white Dhruva could pick out. His eyes still took up half his face though. And the glasses, new, suited him. In fact they seemed to magnify his eyes.
Daya's smile dropped at Dhruva's interruption. "You don't get to be angry ASP garu. Oh, I'm sorry, I meant DSP garu."
Dhruva gave him another withering glance and marched to his office. He ran a hand through his hair, taking another big puff from his cigarette. He wished the burn extended to his heart too, it would lessen the pain.
But before he could get to his chair, a hand grabbed his arm, spinning him on his heel until he was pressed up against the wall of his office, hidden from view of anyone walking by the hallway. A convenient blind spot. Of course the bastard spotted it immediately.
"Stop walking away from me Dhruva." Daya growled, and it was only the second time Dhruva had ever seen him so clearly angry but holding it in. He still looked so damn beautiful.
"It was for the best Daya. We agreed-" Dhruva tried to protest before Daya got in his face. The lingering cigarette smoke was starting to irritate Dhruva's eyes. Daya grabbed a hold of his tie, tightening the fabric in his hand. It didn't even cross Dhruva's mind to push him away, not when his body felt like a live wire just from the close proximity.
"We didn't agree to shit. You unilaterally made the decision you thought would be best for us, and I let you walk away because I was scared too. But it's been five years, and I know. I know neither of us have found anything that came close to what we had." Daya growled, pulling the cigarette away from his mouth to quench it against the wall and dropped it on the carpet. He did the same to Dhruva's. The younger man couldn't see past the redness of Daya's lower lip.
"So? Are you going to say you leaving was still the right choice?" Daya asked, eyes hard.
If there was one thing Dhruva had learned in the past five years, it was that he wasn't as strong a man as he pretended to be. He grabbed at Daya's head and hauled him in for a kiss, a messy thing more noses and teeth clashing. Daya's glasses were biting into the skin of his nose. But they fixed themselves quickly, this rhythm familiar to their bodies even if their hearts and minds were out of practice.
Shit, they had to go back to the meeting with the IG in a few minutes. Dhruva moaned as Daya grabbed at his thigh, pulling it to wrap around his waist so he could grind their hips together.
"Dhruva..." Daya growled, and Dhruva whimpered. How many times had he heard that exact sound in his dreams in the past five years. Fuck he would let this man do anything to him.
Daya ducked down to suck on Dhruva's neck, and the younger man clutched at Daya's hair as he tilted his head to give him better access. Dhruva rolled his hips once, making Daya snarl against his skin as he slammed Dhruva's hips with his own.
And then suddenly Daya was an arms length away and Dhruva was left half collapsing against the wall. Daya looked deranged, lips shiny with spit as his pupils were dilated so large only a tiny ring of chocolate could be seen.
"Daya ..." Dhruva pleaded, but the other man stayed away.
"Here's what going to happen," Daya said, and god when had they become this way. But then again hadn't Daya always been the braver if the two when it came to matters of the heart? "You are going to clean yourself up, we are going to suffer through the rest of the stupid meeting, and then you are going to take me to your house."
Daya whimpered as he nodded clumsily. Daya's stare pinned him as well as his hands had. He reached forward to lightly caress Dhruva's cheek with the back of his hand. The gentleness of the action was in direct contrast to his rough behavior, and Dhruva felt some tears burn at the edge of his eyes. When he opened his eyes, Daya was standing close again. "You are going to take me to your bed, and I'm going to show you exactly why you were wrong. Understood?"
Dhruva felt a tear fall, but it didn't get far as Daya grabbed his chin and pressed a kiss to his cheek. "Enough breaking each other's hearts Bangaram."
And then he was gone before Dhruva could force his eyes open again. His chest was heaving as he struggled to breathe. His hands were shaking, and he desperately wanted another cigarette. But Daya had given him orders, and orders were one thing he was really good at following.
Taking a fortifying breath, he tried to fix his tie. He only had 2 minutes to make himself presentable.

Bellybutton kiss with Marcus p 🥺👉👈
Pairing: Marcus Pike x f!reader Warnings: Pregnancy.
Tumblr media
"Hi, baby," he picks up on the second ring, "everything okay?"
"Everything's perfect," you tell him, "I was wondering if you wanted to have lunch? I'll bring something by headquarters and we can sit on one of the benches outside?"
"You sound nervous, honey," it's half a laugh, "are you sure everything's okay?"
Reassuring him has him begging for Thai food, "or whatever you want, baby, you know what I like well enough by now," that has you plugging in directions for the restaurant near headquarters he always brings home with him.
When you get to his department, the receptionist just waves you in with a hello and another agent asks if you've gotten your hair done recently. You have but that's not why you're smiling ear to ear right now.
Reaching Marcus' office, you hear him caught in a conference call and slowly open the door to peak around. He waves you in, muting his line and saying, "I'm so sorry, baby, do you mind sitting in here and I'll make it up to you?"
He leaves his chair, grabbing one from the front of the desk to drag it around and clears a spot for your lunch on the flat surface.
"Only one entree?" he asks, his finger hovering over the mute button on his call awaiting your answer.
You nod, "I just wanted dumplings and rice, you can unmute yourself whenever, I'll shut up."
Shaking his head and mumbling something about how you're already quiet to begin with, he unmutes himself to make an input before muting himself again and turning back to you, "it shouldn't take long, just trying to figure out how to dole out this new case, it's half art half murder and there's an international twist."
Covering your mouth, you ask around a bite, "so if you have to go to, like, Paris or Madrid, I get to go with you.... right?"
"I'll see what I can do," he winks, unmuting himself once more to say goodbye to his colleagues.
"Marcus," you laugh, "I don't think I heard a solution to your problem in all those words."
"It's the FBI, gorgeous, not NASA."
Looking around his office, you abandon your food to stare out his window and the surrounding buildings of DC.
"What's on your mind, baby?"
When you turn to look at him, he beckons you to him, his thighs spreading out to give you room between his legs and his hands find your waist as you find your way in front of him.
His eyes are deep brown, a dark so deep that it still takes your breath away to this day and it's your breath that hitches now under his touch.
"If you're looking for a little afternoon action," he smirks up at you, "I will I could say I had the time but I have a meeting in half an hour and that's just not enough time for what I want to do with you."
"No, baby," you push his hair back and watch his eyes roll back as well, "I got something today and I wanted to show you."
That crooked grin widens further, "you got lingerie under there?"
"No!"
"You know I like those plain cotton panties the best anyway," he pushes forward to press a kiss to your cloth covered hip, "easier to replace when I rip them."
You want to reach for your purse, to give him what you came here for but he keeps pulling you into him; he keeps planting kiss after kiss to your sternum, your ribs, the sides of your stomach. He's so gentle and full of love in those big brown eyes while you play with the hair at the base of his skull that it just slips out. No picture. No big gift. No pomp and circumstance, you just say it as he presses another kiss to your stomach.
"I'm pregnant."
The air shifts and you look down at him, nerves pooling in your belly and welling in your eyelids as he looks up at you from his seat.
His eyes are dopey and soft, a million emotions etched throughout them and you beg, "please say something."
He turns, reaching down to the bottom drawer of his desk and pulling it open, "I've been preparing," he says, gesturing to the drawer full of baby clothes this small part of his office has been playing closet to.
"So this is fine?"
"This," he begins to finger the buttons of your dress, undoing the ones at your lower belly, "is perfect."
He kisses your warm skin, his hand skating under your skirt to gently rest against your stomach as your own hand finds his soft curls again.
"Hi, baby," his lips are ghosting across the surface of your belly and you can hear the tears in his voice, "I'm your daddy."
He looks up at you again, "do you think she can hear me already?"
"I don't know, daddy," you wink at him, "but I don't think it hurts to talk to her. Or him. Or whoever they decide to be."
He nods, "I'm gonna play so many art documentaries to your tummy! I hope they decide to be an artist."
"Well," you scrunch your nose, "they'll certainly be a nerd."
"I love you," he says before breaking eye contact and pressing his lips just under your belly button, "and I love you, little bean."

Abbakka Banga-Chowta and Ranveer Chowta always knew that they wanted the best for their daughter. That they wanted her to grow up strong, connected to her roots but also have the love to fly. When Devi came to their lives, they knew that they loved her more than anything else in the world. They just didn’t realize that their daughter was going to experience quite an adventure as she grew up. For the longest time, Abbakka and Ranveer thought that the most adventurous thing they’d explore with Devi was her sexuality and gender identity, something she discovered herself when she was thirteen. Living in Mumbai, India, they had struggled for awhile learning about this and it resulted in her being sent to an international school in Dubai. For awhile, Devi absolutely hated the school. Yet somehow, over time, it grew to not become too bad and it certainly helped her with her English. She even eventually started seeing someone when she was sixteen.
Falling in love for the first time was once of the simplest yet most beautiful things she’d ever experience. While she hadn’t been expecting him, she knew that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. Even when she told him about her sexuality and gender identity, he only seemed to love her more and more. With both of their parents’ permission and blessings, they were set in an arrange marriage and promised to each other. Everything was going perfectly... Until news of Devi’s pregnancy came out.
Devi and her fiancé had just finished graduating from high school, the two ready to start university in the autumn and work even closer to starting their life together. But the moment their parents found out that she was pregnant, they were furious. Her meant-to-be-future-in-laws accused her of sleeping around and cheating on their son. In the midst of it all, he had panicked and said that he wasn’t the father, leaving Devi heartbroken. The engagement was called off, she was forced to say goodbye to the person she loved, and under a lot of scrutinizing pressure, Devi’s parents cut her off. Giving her enough money so that she’d be comfortable for awhile then giving her the slip.
She felt lost in it all. At eighteen years old, she was completely removed from everyone she loved and everything she knew. Having meant to start school at Harvard, she moved out to Boston as quickly as possible. Trying to prepare everything she could before her babies---yes, babies; Devi was pregnant with twins---were meant to come and school was to start. With the money her parents gave her, she was able to find a small apartment that worked yet saved the rest of the money to go towards the babies. She’d been quick to get a job, trying to earn enough money so that she could be able to provide for her children. Soon enough, her twin girls, Leia and Belle (after her favourite Star Wars character and Disney Princess), came into her life. By then, she had a steady job at a Barnes and Noble while also taking a few night classes for her Creative Writing and Hospitality Management majors. Eventually, as the years gone by and her daughters grew up more and more, the more she continued her schooling and the bills began to pile up, Devi took on a second job as a performer at the hottest strip club in Boston. It was a job that she never saw herself partaking in, but thanks to having grown up dancing, it was a job she became good at. Eventually, she graduated from Harvard and while she had been blessed with many scholarships and grants, there were still loans to be paid. Her daughters had been the only light in her life... At least, until sometime later, she met a young woman who came to Boston for a little bit: Carla Villanueva. For the first time in forever, she connected with someone—she was falling in love again. She never saw Carla coming and after what happened with her ex-fiancé and father of her daughters, she’d been scared. Admittedly, what they had was brief and eventually, Carla had to leave whereas Devi stayed. But god, she wished she had joined her. She never would’ve met Luca then.
Luca was a man who was so angry with the world he earned money by underground fighting and she needed a distraction from everything. Whether it was her internal anxiety struggling over how she would provide for her girls to how she’ll take care of her college expenses to missing Carla, she turned to Luca despite him scaring her a little bit. His anger brought out the worst in him and seeing one of his matches, Devi soon ghosted after months of them sleeping together. She’d been afraid of him showing that side of him to her when by themselves, or worse: to her daughters. But after Devi suffered a drug overdose on Valentine’s Day and was in the hospital for awhile, he soon came back into her life. Not too long later, she married Luca. Was it for love? At first, perhaps there’d been some true feelings for him. But after awhile, he went from being a loving partner to a jealous and possessive asshole. He never showed his true colours around Leia and Belle, and kept control whenever him and Devi would fight. It was toxic and while she tried to maintain her ground, deep down, the girl was terrified of the day he’d no longer have control over himself. When Devi found out she was pregnant, though, things did calm down. They were working together and communicating. For a moment, she was starting to believe that she was actually in love with him. That is, until she lost the baby.
It’d been about four months into the pregnancy and she wasn’t showing much yet, but it’d taken a huge blow on the both of them. One night, Luca finally admitted that he blamed her. Once more, their cycle of screaming matches and breaking things came back. Once more did Devi’s fear that Luca would lose his control came back and she feared it happening. And one night, it came deeply close. She found out he was having multiple affairs and with the girls at a sleepover, she took the opportunity to confront him. They had the worst fight ever that night: screaming well into the early morning, all kinds of shit knocked over and/or broken, holes that had been punched into the walls. They hadn’t gotten physical with each other, not until later when they decided to fuck instead of continue their screaming, but she’d been terrified the entire time. That night, she began a plan on filing for divorce.
After that, Devi finally decided to get her shit together and to make plans on getting away. While she stayed working at Barnes and Noble and the club while also started to also do dance performances for events to earn extra money, she was trying to find a nice place in Somerville where she and the girls could live together. Devi started to get her life back on track and to become the adult she needed to be. If not for herself, then for her daughters. For awhile, things were going good. Her and Luca didn’t fight again yet she continued her plan, while he was none the wiser. Then an incident happened at work, a rowdy client who was drunk and acting inappropriately. He’d tried to make a move on her and she told him off, causing him to punch her before slicing her arm with a knife he snuck in. If it hadn’t been for his friends and the bodyguards stopping him, she wouldn’t be here. She had quickly snuck away to a bathroom, grabbing supplies so that she could stitch herself back together and deal with what the fuck happened. It was a massive wakeup call and she knew that she needed to sort her shit out. How she did that, though, was nerve-wracking: by seeking out her parents. Over the years, Ranveer and Abbakka had moved from India to the States. The couple were the owners of the prestigious and luxurious resort and hotel chain known as The Jade Palace, having been a family business run by the Chowta’s since the late 1800s, and they had opened up a new location there in Boston. Learning about her parents living there, she cautiously sought them out. At first, it wasn’t a happy reunion and she’d been turn away. Then, while she’d been out with her daughters, they ran into each other again. Her parents finally seeing their granddaughters for the first time. Seeing Leia and Belle was exactly what the two needed for them to wake up. They offered their help, finally, and Devi took it.
She finally had the divorce papers and restraining order given to Luca. She moved out completely and into her parents’ new-ish Boston home, her and the girls safe and sound in the Chowta mansion. She left her job at the club so that she could begin working as a front-end attendant for the hotel before eventually making her way up. While she kept her job at the bookstore for as long as she could, having genuinely loved working there, she left it eventually to focus on her family and the Jade Palace. For awhile, she finally got everything under control. Her life was back in order. Her dad then made her an offer: to move to Providence Peak in early 2020 when the new location of the Jade Palace were to open in the summer of 2021 and undergo a process to be the owner of the hotel. During that time, she’d been able to release a well-received Young Adult book and considered with returning to the idea of becoming an author, a childhood dream of hers, but she decided to take her father’s offer. Soon enough, Devi and her daughters moved to Providence Peak.
Never had she expected a small mountain city to take over her heart the way it did. While she’s made some friends (and enemies) and even some surprising reconnections, while she also released a second book, while she found herself enjoying owning the Providence Peak location of her family’s hotel, while she reconnected with Carla and even began to try to start something with her, it would eventually end come early 2022. Her father’s health had been deteriorating and she had a duty as his daughter to return to help him. While she promised to return back to Providence Peak one day, she needed to focus on her father and especially on her daughters. Yet over the course of that time, Devi soon made a decision. Her step-cousin, Nazli Ertuğul, would become the new owner of the entire Jade Palace hotelier.
With her father battling cancer, things had been rough at the beginning. She had to watch her father, a normally strong man, in his weakest moment and it killed her. It was hard having to watch him like that and many times Devi found herself crying at night, feeling helpless. To add salt to the wound, her and Carla were beginning to grow estranged. A factor that broke her heart, especially after believing they could be together again and promising to return to return to her. As months went on and the longer she stayed in Boston, she began to fear that her promise would be broken. Eventually, Ranveer began to grow stronger, healthier, better. In August of 2022, during an appointment with his doctor, finally some good news came: he was cancer-free. Ranveer and Abbakka were ecstatic. With the girls having a soccer tournament, though, Devi had been unable to attend the appointment. During a break in the match, she’d gotten a call from her parents and they informed her of the happy news. All before tragedy would soon struck again; During the middle of the call, while they’d been driving, a collision happened and resulted in the worst thing imaginable: her parents died in the accident.
Devi couldn’t express her devastation over the path life led her on again. One minute, she was receiving the best news she’s heard in awhile. The next, she received the worst news. After the funeral, Devi’s best friend and older sister figure, Rachel Hargrove, offered to watch the girls for awhile back in Providence Peak. Have them return home and be with friends again while Devi took time to mourn. Considering how deeply and intensely the woman felt things, she knew that it was for the best. And for awhile, she mourned. She downward spiraled and took the time to do so. Yet, eventually, she remembered that her parents wouldn’t want her to be like this. That they would rather her try to find joy in life again instead of mourn. Wiping away her tears and trying to find peace within herself, she soon got to work. She soon was making preparations over the family mansion and her parents belongings for both their homes in Mumbai and in Boston, making sure to contact her family overseas and work with them as well. She even created a YouTube channel, using it as a way to connect more with her readers and to fully express her love of fandom, along with starting up a TikTok, much to her newly teenaged daughters’ chagrin. Eventually, after all business in Boston and concerning her family was dealt with, after she found herself in a better mental situation, she would soon switch over to a new target: returning back to Providence Peak.
While still in Boston, she’d been able to lock down on a new house in Claret Park, her, Leia, and Belle inheriting a large fortune both Ranveer and Abbakka left behind for them, among other things. However, she knew that she wanted to do more things in her life once she made her way back home. After contacting the owner of the Comic Lab, which had been one of her favourite places in Providence Peak, she soon struck a deal with them: she bought the comic book store, intending on finding a newer, bigger building for it and expand its merchandise and other things to offer. A large building for all nerdy fandom-loving people with merchandise, books, and all types of products with a café to serve food and drinks inspired by a multitude of fandoms and pop culture, she plans on the Comic Lab to grow into a business that’s basically the love child of Barnes and Noble, FYE, Game Stop, and Hot Topic (in her defense, they have many incredible pop culture products). Working with many book publications and organizations like BoxLunch and Loungefly to distribute these products.
After working on this project for awhile, along with writing a new book, Devi has finally realized that it was now time to return home. Part of her is excited, especially to reunite with some people. Part of her is nervous, especially to reunite with some people. Yet overall, Devi is ready to put her past behind her and to try and find happiness for herself and for her daughters. Even if she is giving life the stink-eye in fear of it throwing another wrench at her.

THE TRUSTY SIDEKICK:
you need a wingman? leaky is your guy. he’s charming and pleasant and can talk anyone up. need a favor? leaky is there easily fulfilling it as if it’s nothing to him. the guy is a confidant, a hype-man, a volunteer, he can transform himself into whatever you need and it never seems to bother him. and despite being a gifted football player, and smart guy, and seemingly everywhere on campus, he doesn’t steal the spotlight. he’s not the one you think of when you think of ogden, he lets others take the popularity, the jealous looks, the whispers. despite always being there, you might sometimes overlook him, maybe because he’s always there. but he seems to be a good guy, always offering a kind smile and nod of his head on campus, willing to help tutor you in math, and then lets you have all the glory when you ace the test. it almost seems like leaky is making himself out to be the pedestal that everyone sits on. the support that uplifts the hero, and yet still disappears in the crowd, never seeking glory for himself.

barryorchestra presents...2020: A Playlist - #30.
#30. "Ants" by Tank and The Bangas
Tumblr media
Tank and The Bangas is a collective of musicians based in New Orleans founded by Tarriona "Tank" Ball. Tank started her artistic career as a slam poet, and it definitely shows. Much of their songs are driven by spoken word, but their influences run the gambit of soul, R&B, gospel, hip-hop, funk, and rock. The best thing about this band is that every song is completely and utterly unpredictable. What sounds like a ballad may turn into a funky jam session, then transition into a jazz solo, before ending in a zany rap performance. It's all held together by the tight musicianship of Tank and Company and their commitment to create this imaginative musical world that they jokingly call "Soulful Disney". Their live performances give each song that they perform extended life as they transform each piece into a completely different experience. Equally as introspective as it is fun, "Green Balloon" is an album that takes you on a journey through what New Orleans is now. It's ditching the traditional tropes of the jazz and soul New Orleans has been known for and instead gives us a buffet of modern flavors to choose from.
"Ants" was the song that I kept returning to, as I enjoyed the comparison of the journey of an ant to a human going through the various stages of life. Tank makes it personal and specific to her but still brings the listener in as if they've been there to witness her journey all along and is only doing a recap for the fun of it. Everything about this piece creates an atmosphere that I want to be a part of.

W4: I agree. I hope people recognize this before it is too late. Walls turn. Man and woman enter holding hands Man 1 (Marvin): I love you babes. Woman (Asha): I love you more Mar: I love you more than all the grains of sand found on the bottom of the Caribbean sea. As: (giggles) Mar: Let‟s eat (they take out KFC). Only the best for you babes. As: Honey, you know we can‟t stay as long as before due to the curfew. Mar: I know babes. We will just have to make the most of this time we have here (smiles). (They begin to eat) As: Marvin Mar: Yes babes? As: Can we go… out? Mar: Out? And we out now? As: No, I mean out to a nice restaurant. More than this fried chicken, more than coming to this spot to sit on these boxes. I want more. Mar: More? You know how long I waiting for you to say this. Well let‟s go behind the walls and I will give you more. As: Stop playing nah. You know what I mean. And as for that you know we agreed to wait a bit. Mar: So you eh like what we have here. This has become our spot. A spot we can share our thoughts, our moments, to eat ah fowl. This is ours Ash baby, and you want to spoil that? As: I know babes, but look how long we have been coming here. Let us find a new place, a better place. Here is no longer safe. Mar: Asha, you know that I don‟t have that kinda money. I just start to work, you eh finish school. You know I want to give you the best and it does take all out of me not to satisfy this heat I have for you. I have been holding back for you every time and I get nothing from you in return except for complains and what you want. As: Oh Marv… Mar: Don‟t “oh Marv” me! Why you have to bring that up for eh? Just to spoil a good thing we have going on. You want to leave all this behind? (gestures to the space) As: Baby please… Mar: (Steups) Let‟s go and anyways, it getting late, the curfew will start soon and it better for you to go and get a taxi so at least one of us will get something this evening! As: Oh Marvin, don‟t behave like that nah. Mar: Is you that have me like this! As: Please stop. Mar: No, is you who want to have a good time and spend the money I don‟t have. To have rotisserie when all I could afford is fried chicken. All I wanted was a lil‟ banga banga with you but the way you behaving I see that and a good government eh happening. Silence As: You want to? (pause) You want to? (motions to the wall) Mar: (smiles. Goes behind the wall and takes off his pants. He throws it to the side of the wall. Girl begins to walk to the wall when she hears the sound of her mother) Voiceover: Don‟t give away your rose if he is not prepared to embrace the thorns…. Mar: Ah ready! (She stops, picks up his pants turns and runs away) Mar: Asha? Asha? That b____ (he moves off the stage hiding himself) Walls turn laughing W1: Now that was too funny! W3: You eh see how he ran away!  W2: And by the looks of things, that girl eh missing out on anything. W3: What really wrong with men? They really feel that a box of fried chicken would satisfy these women? W4: Some of them don‟t understand the complexities of the female species. They haven‟t learnt the art of love, of caring and… W3: Patience W1: These people are really in a state of emergency! They have so much to learn. The rights from the wrongs, how to love, who to love and respect. W4: One, I agree with you 100%, It will take some time for them to do this. W1: How much time should we give them? We here since when? 1976? And all we living on right now is hope. Hoping the people will change, hoping that the roads will be better, hoping that they put aside politics and start working for the people. W3: Well One, all we can just do is hope one day our walls will speak loudly enough for all to hear and that chance will come. Walls turn Woman enters frantic. She looks at her watch as she waits for a taxi. Man, decently dressed, enters. Man: Hello Woman: Hi Ma: Need help? Wo: I ok. Ma: Let me help you Wo: I say I ok. Ma: Ok, ok Pause Ma: It getting late Wo: I know Ma: Trying to go home? Wo: I want to but no taxis like they stop working. You here for a taxi too? Ma: No need to. Wo: Oh? Ma: Nah, I just stay here and listen to the walls talk. Wo: Ok Ma: They have amazing stories, these walls. It is amazing what you can learn from them. Wo: The walls… they talk to you? Ma: Not just to me. To all who are willing to listen. Wo: (mimes the word ‘crazy’. Paces up and down) I need to go home. Where are the damn cars? I eh know why they don‟t hurry up and legalize PH taxis! Ma: Is that going to solve your problem? Making the wrong right? Wo: I just want to go home. Ma: We all do. (Silence) Ma: You will get a car soon. Just be patient. Wo: (faint smile) Ok Ma: There is one coming now. Taxi! Wo: Thanks Ma: That is all we want to hear sometimes. God bless mam. Wo: Thank you sir. Good bye Ma: Good bye (he watches her go in the distance. Goes behind the walls gets his tattered shirt and cardboard sheet. He puts on his shirt and spreads his ‘bed’ near the case. He makes himself comfortable) Ma: Good night walls Wall 1, 2, 3 &4: (turn) Goodnight (walls return to their original position, man smiles) There is the sound of sirens in the distance as all prepare for the first night of the curfew As the homeless man sleeps a sweet song is heard indicating that he is in a state of sleep. (Hero – Enrique Iglesias). Characters move on the stage reflecting the good times the man had with his family. He rises and moves towards them enjoying their company. They begin to separate from him and move behind the wall. The music is cut with a loud bang. The man jumps out from his sleep. Two workmen appear on the scene looking at the walls and speaking to each other. Workman 1: Yep these buggers coming down all right. The boss says that we have to get cracking soon. A new car park is the best thing for this area. Workman 2: Right Charlie! Wm1: I could see it now a new tri-level car park that caters only for those who could afford. It will make the company a pretty penny once it is managed right. Man: Break down these walls you say? Who want to break them down? There is so much history in these four walls. If they are broken down, everything will be forgotten. Wm1: Do I look like I care? These walls are an eyesore. Who will miss them? Wm2: Yeah who will miss them? Wm1: Who cares about these walls? They should have been taken down a long time ago. They are a hazard to society. They breed rats and cockroaches. I could just imagine what happen in this place. Ma: I care about these walls they have become a comfort to me they mean so much to me. My creative juices came out because of the walls… Wm2: And by the smell of you kept all of it! Ma: I begging you don‟t destroy them. They are all I have. Wm1: (stares at the man) Ok. I wouldn‟t break them down. Just give me the $50,000.00 I would get for doing the job and maybe I could force the boss to change his mind. Ma: I look like I have that kind of money!? Wm1: well in that case kiss your walls goodbye. It will be down the next curfew start. See you later… (Wm2 sends a kiss to the wall)Man walks to the walls and caresses it. He looks at them and begins to hum song that was sung during his sleep. People casually walk by, not paying any attention to him. He moves about Man: Help me save them. Will you help me? (shouts) will anybody help me! (he runs off the stage) Workmen reappear with their equipment to begin working on the wall. They mill around waiting for approval to begin the demolition. Man returns and sits in front of the wall. Wm1: What the hell man get up and move! Ma: No! Wm: What the jail is this. Man, get up so we could do we wok nah! Ma: I said no. If nobody else eh want to fight for these walls I will stand here by their side. These walls mean something to me. You may not care, yuh boss doh but I care. These walls mean something to me and I sure it means something for others as well. Don‟t break them down please. I begging yuh. Make them stronger, better. They will last for year to come and mean a lot to generations… Wm: Yuh see this shit! (A scuffle begins. A workman walks and gets a hammer and begins to hit the wall). The man shouts NO! Some attempt to stop him and others look on. Freeze Song: Hero from the line I can be your hero baby… who can take my breath away… Curtain Call
