Welcoming musicians to the Fall Residency @thebanffcentre @banffmusic #banffmusic (at The Banff Centre)

It’s been quite a year. In particular, I was very fortunate to be among a handful who were accepted onto the ‘Source and Inspiration’ residency at the Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada. I’ve been meaning to say something about it since I got back. Here goes.
It was an exceptional three weeks in every sense - with inspiring and like-minded people (and elk), top-class facilities and a breathtaking setting, in the heart of the Canadian rockies. In a nutshell, the programme, the brainchild of Andrew Burashko (of Art of Time ensemble, Toronto) aimed to pair songwriters with composers who would arrange their songs for piano quintet. The songs were to themselves take inspiration from Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A. With a foot in both camps, I volunteered to work as a songwriter and arranger, benefitting on both fronts, with advice from a who's who of songwriters and composers from Canada and further afield (John Southworth, Cameron Wilson, Robert Carli, Sarah Slean, Christos Hatzis).
It was also a novel experience to hand my songs over to other musicians to arrange. Kelsey McNulty turned in a lively tango version of 'Antonin', hamming up its already firmly tongue-in-cheek tenor to great effect (with a masterstroke of involving all of our fellow participants in the final verses for anthemic effect), while Kenley Kristofferson gave 'Hilda', which started out as a folky ballad about Downpatrick's Quoile River, an elegant, baroque makeover.
There was a live performance at the end, you can now hear the fruits of this here.
As importantly, we made some great friends and had some serious fun. In the snow. (It was cold!) Thanks to all of you, it was a joy! :)
While in Banff, I also put together a little lofi video for my old seasonal chestnut ‘Guiding Star’, with some willing help from my friends Kelsey McNulty and Sammy Bayefsky, which was a lot of fun, as you can probably guess from watching it!
It was a pleasure to round off the year singing this and my other seasonal numbers as a special guest at Bennigan’s bar, Derry, with old pals the Inishowen Gospel Choir in full voice. I suppose it’s just slightly late to wish you all a Merry/Londonmerry Christmas, but it’s still the season and I hope you’re having a nice break, wherever you are. All going well, I see this being a busy year for CH, so stay tuned. Here’s to 2015, may it be peaceful and preposterous. Neil/Neil.
