Princess Anne visits Lochaber to open marina – and takes a trip down memory lane
Tumblr media
Princess Anne, accompanied by Andy McKenna, unveils a plaque to mark the occasion of her opening the new marina in Corpach, on 18 April 2023.
HRH Princess Anne cut the ribbon during one of two visits in Lochaber on Tuesday.
The royal visitor made her first appearance of the day at the Lochaber Rural Education Trust (LRET). However, this was not her first time visiting.
She opened the Ben Nevis Auction Mart at the LRET in 1999. Photographs from the event can still be seen at LRET today.
Upon arrival, Princess Anne was greeted by piper and Lochaber High School student Alex Drysdale.

Isabel Campbell MBE is a founding member and trustee of the LRET, and was also present when Princess Anne first visited in 1999.
Isabel says it feels ‘wonderful’ to see her again.
The Princess ‘speaks and engages with all ages’
“She remembers the day she opened the auction mart well – she is a super person,” Isabel recalls fondly.
“She speaks and she engages with all ages.”
Over 50 local school children were part of the event.

The children often use the facility for educational and recreational purposes, including the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA).
Jacqueline says she and the students were ‘honoured’ to meet the The Princess Royal.
“We get a lot of enjoyment out of the centre,” says Jacqueline. “So it was nice to return the honour.”

Thomas Telford Corpach Marina are ‘honoured’
HRH Princess Anne’s second appearance of the day was to declare the Thomas Telford Corpach Marina open.
Upon arrival, HRH Princess Anne was welcomed by Andy McKenna, chairman of the Thomas Telford Corpach Marina.
The project was in development for just over eight years.

Now complete, the layout has a “fully sheltered, all-weather marina and public slipway”, as well as a car-park for marina users.
There are berths for over 40 yachts and motor vessels, and small dayboats which float in shallow waters.
New facilities also include showers, toilets, a bike shelter and An Cafaidh Mara – a dog friendly cafe which opened January 2023.
Once the Princess cut the red ribbon, Corpach’s marina was declared open at last.

Robert Coull, owner of An Cafaidh Mara, says it is ‘really exciting’ day for everyone involved.
“The cafe has been a long time in the making,” he says. “It is nice to see the marina finally open.”
‘An absolute privilege’
The Princess spoke to many of the Corpach marina’s trustees, including Linda Campbell.
Linda says it feels ‘absolutely wonderful’ to see the Thomas Telford Corpach Marina open.
“It has taken many years,” she says. “For it to come to fruition on such a wonderful Lochaber day is marvellous.”

Their mother said: “It was an absolute privilege to meet her.”
At the end of the opening, Princess Anne revealed a plaque which marked the occasion of the marina’s opening.
A Thomas Telford Corpach Marina spokesperson said: “We are delighted and honoured to have HRH The Princess Royal open our state of the art marina facilities today.”

Into the Caledonian Canal
Sunday 14th July 2024
What a wonderful, red letter day that was! Up early and into the Corpach sea lock shortly after 08.00 with the weather promising to be fine. Crew learning fast and doing a fine job! Going up Neptune's staircase was amazing, if fairly hard work, as we were in the locks with four other boats, one of which was a beautiful 73ft yacht. And the sun shone all the way... The lunch stop at Banavie at the top of staircase was a welcome break before we set off again, mooring overnight just beyond Gairlochy lochs in the most beautiful spot.

A Quick Snapshot of Ashok Saraf's Cinematic Journey
Tumblr media
Hi Tumblr users! Let’s shift our focus to one of the most celebrated actors in Indian cinema - the ever-enchanting, Ashok Saraf. Popularly known as 'Mama', his hearty laughter and vibrant performances have made us fans for life.
A stalwart actor who stepped into the film industry in the 1970s, Saraf soon emerged as the face of comedy in the Marathi cinema. Joining forces with fellow artists Laxmikant Berde, Sachin Pilgaonkar, and Mahesh Kothare, he initiated a 'comedy wave' that’s etched in the memory of even today's viewers. His iconic films like "Dhoom Dhadaka", "Ek Daav Bhutacha", and "Ashi Hi Banawa Banavi", leave us laughing till our stomachs hurt, every single time.
But wait, this comedy genius didn’t just stick to Marathi cinema. Bollywood was the next stop for Saraf, where he nailed his performances with the same aplomb. Who can forget 'Munshiji' from Karan Arjun, or his memorable roles in "Yes Boss" and "Singham"? Clearly, Saraf knows no boundaries when it comes to genre or language.
Oh, and did we mention TV? The sitcom "Hum Paanch", featured Saraf as Anand Mathur, a character so relatable and endearing that it still has a special place in our hearts.
Apart from his remarkable talent, what truly makes Saraf special is his humility and down-to-earth personality. Even after having practically grown up with us through the silver screen and our television sets, 'Mama' continues to be a humble and cherished figure.
To sum it up, Ashok Saraf's journey in the entertainment industry has been nothing short of extraordinary. His effortless humor, lovable characters, and humble personality indeed make him a gem in the crown of Indian cinema. To our beloved 'Mama', you continue to brighten our days, one role at a time!
Stay tuned, folks! As we continue to celebrate and remember the legends of cinema that have made our lives just a bit more entertaining. See you at the movies!

October 23rd 1822 saw the official opening of the Caledonian Canal.
Dates differ a wee bit on this.
The Caledonian Canal bisects Scotland, linking the Irish Sea to the North Sea via the Great Glen. Its design and construction was state-of-the-art for the time, and advanced 19th century engineering methods considerably.
It was the famous Scot James Watt who first prepared a survey for a canal in the Great Glen in 1773 but nothing came of the project, in 1801 Thomas Telford produced a feasibility study and two years later an act of parliament in 1803 signalled the start of the project, although it was another year before work began.
Telford worked with William Jessop on the survey, and the two men oversaw the construction until Jessop died in 1814. Jessop estimated the cost of the canal at £474,500 (excluding land purchases) and the construction time at seven years. In the event 18 years and cost £1.2m.
The Caledonian Canal created a new trade route across Scotland. It meant people and goods could be moved quicker and more safely. This helped boost both the local and national economies.
Building the canal created jobs both directly and indirectly. Later work (from 1843 to 1847 for example) also provided employment by extending and improving the waterway.
The Caledonian Canal is 97km long. 60km of it is routed through the lochs Dochfour, Ness, Oichy and Lochy – leaving 37km of channel to excavate.
Building the artificial stretches of channel saw around 1,500 workers constructing a total of 29 locks. All of these were about the same size. At the time they were the biggest locks in the world – 55m long, 12.2m wide and 6m deep.
Engineers working on the canal faced significant environmental challenges. The Highland ground was hard and the Scottish climate harsh.
The project team was helped by some new technology, however. This included the first steam dredger seen in Scotland, purpose built in 1814.
The dredger, looking a bit like a flat-bottomed boat, was 24.4m long and 7m wide. It used 25 buckets on a 12.8m frame to scoop up material from the canal bed. Working at its best, the dredger could shift 91 tonnes an hour.
The canal is now a popular tourist destination. It's still used as a shortcut for smaller commercial vessels, while I’ve never travelled on it as such, I have hiked along parts of it, and camped alongside it, I recommend it as an easy walk where you can “wild camp” at various spots. Scottish Canals have a key you can use for just £10  it gives you access to toilets and showers.
Pics include a drawing of culverts on the Banavie reach,  a ship being towed along Loch Oich and restoration work at a drained section in 1984 at Fort Augustus.
