Ariel snorts softly.  The fingers of his left hand twitch (his right arm, the metal one, goes completely dead when he sleeps, it took him weeks for the way it drags at him when he rolls over to stop waking him up).

“Sss. Super–”

“What?” Across the room, Thalia pauses, arm poised in the middle of placing a book back on the shelf.

“Super Cali combo.  Fffff.”

“Come again, darlin’?”  René looks over at Ariel, asleep on the couch, with obvious affection.

“Sushi Fox.  It’s a game,” Thalia says, shelving another book from her armful. “You’re this fat little fox and you have to come up with a way to get to all the sushi, then there’s a matching game at the end of each level.  It’s deceptively difficult, but addictive.  They just released Sushi Fox II and he’s completely obsessed.”

“Oh.  Okay.”  He goes back to mixing questionable powders together in a mortar. Then, after a minute: “That kid plays too many video games.”

“You can have the oc-to-pus,” Ariel sings softly to the tune of Beethoven’s 7th.  “I hate th’ way it looks.”

Thalia snorts.  “Does he talk in his sleep much?”

“Lately, yeah, he does. If he’s sleeping real hard after a couple days without.”  René nods.  “’S real cute.  Y’know.  Until he starts talkin’ ‘bout creepy shit.”

“Creepy how?”

René dumps the powder into an envelope and uses a wet sponge to seal it.  “The other night, he actually said ‘I can’t reach you. Can you breathe?  Most of its eyes are closed now.’”

Her hand pauses again, her nose squinched up.  “…Okay. That’s really weird.”

“Said it real conversationally, too.  Like ordering at the drive-thru.  ‘I could try to take you out in pieces.’  When he woke up he said he didn’t remember anything.”

“Freaky.”

The envelope joins a stack of several others, and he starts measuring out herbs again.  “Mmmhmm. Freaky freaky.  We all got some bad shit in our heads.  Gotta come out sometime.  He could be gettin’ Greatest Hits From The Abyss Volume 666.  Sushi Fox don’t sound too bad.”

“It’s not exactly nightmare fuel, no,” Thalia agrees with a chuckle.  “Unless your nightmare is not being able to get to your caterpillar roll.”

Ariel snorts and sits up, scrubbing a wrist over his face.  He pushes his pair of Halloween cat ears off and runs a hand through his hair. “Did you say caterpillar roll?”

“Don’t tell me you’re hungry.  You had two double dog dares an’ an XL bananabutter shake and most of my cheezy frizzles.  There ain’t room in there for a real caterpillar, forget a whole roll.”

“But sushi,” Ariel protests, then breaks into a massive, sleepy yawn.  It makes him look younger than he is.  René’s hands still for a moment. He shakes it off, points at the stairs with the pestle.

“Go to your room and go to sleep.”

“No.  I wanna be down here with you,” he complains, wedging himself more firmly into the angle of the crappy curbside-salvaged couch and pulling a cushion against his chest.  He watches René go back to work with eyes sagging closed.  “Don’ wanna sleep alone,” he sighs.  “Bad dreams.”

Thalia gives René a stern look, the kind of stern look only she can muster.  “Go with him,” she mouths.

René sighs, looks at his work, then rinses his hands in the old sink in the corner.  He dries them on his shirt, then goes and pries Ariel off the couch and into a sitting position.

“C’mon, sushi fox.  Let’s get you to bed.”

“Stay with me?”

René sighs, then leans in and kisses Ariel’s hair.  “I’ll stay, yeah.”

Good Things:

Choreday got did and soon I can pay bills

I had energy leftover to do luka’s dishes

Surprise summer thunderstorms just as it’s starting to get light outside and the birds are talking

I got to feed a dried minnow to a kitten (the nice dude at the pet supply store let me take one home for free to see if Beatrix likes them, but it turns out she wasn’t interested)

I saw many pretty neighborhood cats just kind of slinking along being cats outside
