🌟 chaos trio - steven universe au concepts! 💎

some doodles i made in ms paint! i haven't figured out a specific storyline for these three but what i got so far is that moonstone and sunstone work for the homeworld. they're practically inseperable with sunstone often protecting moonstone from gems that think he's too weak. at some point the two are sent to check out earth and while sunstone is away for a bit moonstone is found and taken by howlite who reckognizes him as being from homeworld. some arguing and hijinks ensue but eventually howlite comes to realize that moonstone isn't some upper crust murderer and moonstone comes to realize that The Homeworld is Bad Actually. all the while sunstone is terrified out of his mind trying to find moonstone. by the time he finally spots his twin he sees moonstone being friendly with some rebels, maybe even hears him say something about staying on earth and via Angsty Misunderstandings he thinks that moonstone is sick of him and is staying on earth and ditching him. in reality, moonstone had wanted to ask sunstone to join the rebels with him but by the time he sees sunstone again his twin had just gotten on the ship back to homeworld and moonstone doesn't have enough time to explain what's happening before the ship leaves with him. (poor boys, how long until someone makes a 'stan and ford are happy and nothing bad happens to them to ruin it' au kekekeke?)

also i didn't write it down but sunstone's weapon would probably some sort of knuckle dusters or gloves like the ones garnet has? meanwhile, ford is more of a technician like peridot and probably won't have a weapon.

Notes below: (very long and detailed)

+ Jazz is a melanistic gray wolf, Danny is an albino mule deer, Dan is a king cobra, Dani is a peregrine falcon. Some of these ideas are taken from my dp royal court ideas.

I associate Jazz with wolves and canines. She is very loyal and protective, which I think would be best associated with canines. I usually give her the largest animals possible (because of her height), and gray wolves are the largest of all wolves. She is melanistic due to the fact that I like her color palette of black and turquoise. It also gives her a special connection to Danny that I do on purpose where they are black and white.

Dan is associated with cold blooded animals in my mind, cold in demeanor, vicious, and slippery. He is a king cobra because king cobras are the largest of all venomous snakes. They are also not true cobras, which adds a nice connection to Dan as being the most different out of all of the halfas. Surprisingly, king cobras are rather friendly to humans, which might be because of how smart they are.

I associate Dani with fast and speedy animals, so I often give her the fastest animals I can find lmao. Peregrine falcons are the fastest birds in the world, due to their diving speeds. I like how Dani is considered a bird because she is very free-spirited and flighty in my mind. I love it because I think she’d be really independent and would love the sky. Peregrine falcons also mostly eat birds, just like how king cobras eat other snakes, so that’s pretty cool too.

Danny is both kingly and creepy, which describes deer very well. Mule deer are very common in the US, and you might recognize them due to the fact that the Great Prince of the Forest (in Bambi) is inspired by a mule deer. Deer are fascinating creatures because there have been many, many folklores and myths about them, but none can compare to the real facts. Deer are very heavily affected by diseases such as chronic wasting disease, which can cause very strange behaviors. They get up after death, they walk off after being shot at or run over, they kill themselves repeatedly, they eat other animals, and they walk on their hind legs. All in all, while deer are very majestic and beautiful, they are also very, very freaky. There is a sense of poetry in how they’re hunted, which also applies to Danny. I think deer describes him very well :)

+ Meanwhile, the Batkids are a wild assortment of animals. Dick is a white throated needletail, Jason is an argali sheep, Cass is a black footed cat, Tim is a red fox, Stephanie is a dingo, Duke is an African lion, and Damian is a domestic cat (specifically a tuxedo cat).

Dick was always meant to be a bird. However, I wanted him to be fast, but not a bird of prey (which are usually the top 5 fastest birds). So I chose a white throated needletail for him, who are believed to be the fastest (while flying straight). They’re very elusive and photos are rare :( they are, however, very round and cute, and they even have a patch of shiny blue feathers on their wings, as well as v-shaped white spots, similar to his Nightwing suit!

Jason is an argali sheep because I associate him with lambs and rams. Mostly because sheep and lambs are associated with God and religious sacrifices (*cough cough* Jason dying), as well as innocence, docility, and obedience. Jason, as Red Hood, defies the meaning and memories of his past life as Robin, so I like the idea of him being a “black sheep” and defying those expectations of him as well. Argali sheep are known to have beautiful horns, are a species of wild sheep that live in mountains, and are also the largest of wild sheep.

Cass is a black footed cat because I feel like she’s very feline in demeanor, and black footed cats are one of the best hunters in the animal kingdom, with an over 60% chance of having a successful kill. (I think African wild dogs are the highest with 75-85%. It’s hard in the animal kingdom.) I also think it’s very cute of her to be so small but so deadly.

Tim is a red fox because of his cleverness and smarts. Red foxes are common in America and are usually hunted because people thought that foxes killed their livestock and dug up corpses. Tim is either really loved or really hated, so I feel like a red fox both symbolizes his irl status and his intelligence in the comics.

Stephanie is a dingo for no particular reason. However, they are social creatures and loved due to the fact that they have a history with humans. They’re golden colored and Stephanie gave off the vibes of an Australian, I literally cannot explain myself.

Duke is a lion for the same reasons: none in particular. However, lions are noble and considered very powerful. In my drawing of him, he is still a young adult, so his mane isn’t fully grown yet :3 he is 100% a normal lion tho!

Damian is a domestic cat for a few reasons. He is meant to be cute while the others are considerably scarier. There would also be a sense of irony bc I imagine that Talia is a big cat like a tiger or panther. However, cats are known as good hunters for a reason, and they have good instincts and can be just as loyal as dogs. As such, I think that he would be a regular kitty :3 other choices included him being a leopard cub, but it would be more funny if he was so small while everyone else is so big.

+ Something something, the two people who have had their deaths impact them the most and are often considered their parents’ greatest failures are prey animals that are usually hunted for sport….

+ Other small relationships between animal forms: the assassins are small cat forms. Dan being an animal not from the Americas, which also symbolizes him being out of place in the timeline. The Phantom family are purposefully made very different but also connected, examples being: a predator, a prey, a flying animal, and a cold blooded animal, etc. The Batfam being more random/less connected than the Phantom family due to their different backgrounds/lack of blood relation.

+ Their animal forms are also hint at the couples that I like, which is most obvious with Jason and Jazz lmaoooo. However, it is also a little noticeable in Tim and Dani (bird and fox), and definitely a little more obvious in Dan and Dick (snake and bird; please refer to my first piece of work with them tee hee). Danny’s is vague because I’m a multi-shipper with him, so he’s prey while most of everyone else are predator animals 💀

+ There are a few ideas in this (not counting the Pet AU): 1) Danny, Jazz, Dan, and Dani become companions and helpers to the Batfam, able to transform when necessary but also like spending time in their animal forms. In exchange, the Batfam help them with whatever problems they have and also give them sanctuary, 2) A regular animal-characteristics AU where everyone (or most of everyone, if humans exist) are some sort of animal hybrid creatures in the regular modern world, 3) The same as idea 2 but more Warrior Cats-esque where they’re way more animalistic, form packs, and live in less urban settings.

+ Yes, in his more humanoid form, Dan would have his legs replaced with a snake’s tail. I can’t decide between Dick and Dani having wings attached to their backs, or them having wings that connect to their arms.

+ Extras: Sam is a thoroughbred horse, Tucker is an American alligator, Valerie is a wolverine, and Wes is a swan. Bruce is a giant golden crowned flying fox, Alfred is an emperor penguin, and Barbara is a pony (but tbh, I’m open to suggestions).

I feel she is more than just a regular domestic cat, a serval because of her long legs. The stripes on their back kinda look like DD markings especially around the legs. Also yellow

Mainly because I saw this one furry pic on Twitter that had her as a goat and it’d been canon to me ever since, also most people draw the F DD legs as hooves so perfect. I specifically give her a bell because it’s reminds me of the hc she’s always fidgeting or clicking a pen so the bell gives that fidget. Also for her little form being a lamb is very symbolic with the fact she follows the solver blindly and is ultimately lead to a slaughter for her loyalty. Also the action of goats head butting people is funny and J head butting people would be funny.

Cyn-Maned Wolf

Since maned wolves are like their own thing I thought it would be fitting to make her something that is mistaken for literally everything but itself, to show the trickery. Some people think they are kinda scary for their long limbs and look kind of uncanny, so perfect. Also with her being a predator that could easily hunt the main three/four.

Okay so idk if this is how ur vibing w Bambi rn but in my mind palace she and lamb are estranged sisters. Bambi is the oldest and very much the opposite of what she was raised to be unlike her younger sister lamb which led to rlly Deep resentment between the two bc lamb hated having to compensate for both herself and Bambi when she just wanted an older sister but Bambi hated that lamb “enabled” their suffocating and religious family dynamic by following their fathers demands. When Bambi finally left the family it was not cute for anyone involved and personally I think that she and lamb had a physical altercation that like permanently changed lamb idk I just love the Cain and Abel symbolism. I think that a religious upbringing turned sour paired with the wound of her sister contributes a lot to bambis brutality and part of why Barry is so drawn to Bambi is because she’s effectively fallen from grace and violently so BUT this is very rudimentary tho idk I’m just thinkin

There is no more emotionally compelling narrative dynamic than death.

Many years ago the night before I began writing a script which featured a young woman with terminal cancer, I wrote my friend Kurt Brown. Kurt was a poet and in fact had turned me onto poetry some years previously.

I emailed him: “Kurt, can you recommend a really good poem about death.”

He emailed me back: “Scott, all poems are about death.”

That got me thinking not only about poems, but stories of all kinds. Whether literal or metaphorical, aren’t all stories — at some level of interpretation and meaning — about death?

Recently I was reminded of my email exchange with Kurt when I read a /film article by Josh Spiegel: ‘The Lion King’, ‘Bambi’, and Why Disney Movies Shouldn’t Be Afraid About Death”. In it, Spiegel compares these two classic Disney movies and writes this about The Lion King:

When Mufasa dies in The Lion King, pushed off a cliff by his jealous brother Scar into a stampede of wildebeest, it’s a shocking moment not only for his son Simba, but for everyone in the audience. The film is clearly building to this heartbreak in even lighter moments, such as a brief image of Simba and Mufasa playfully wrestling in the grass one evening, scored to the lush, almost operatic score from Hans Zimmer. But when Mufasa dies, it’s still a major surprise because these things just don’t happen in Disney films. What’s more, the aftermath, where Simba tries to nuzzle underneath the paw of his now-dead father, almost trying to will him back to life, is a gut-punch moment in Disney animation, as plaintive and affecting as anything the studio has ever done. I’m not going to lie: watching my son during this scene, as he became aware of what was happening, and seeing him come close to crying was incredibly rough. Like I said: the emotion is compounded when you watch this as an adult.

It might seem odd, even strange in fact that these two companies, know for producing family movies, should traffic in stories featuring death, but here’s my take: Where else can we go to process our own finitude than stories? The fact is each of us is born with an expiration date. We learn this early on as children, yet even when we gain some sense of permanence — around the age of 5 or 6 — by that point, we have managed to acclimatize ourselves to the reality that we will not live forever. Indeed, one day — we know not when — death will come calling for us.

How best to prepare ourselves the death of loved ones, friends, even ourselves than by vicariously experiencing those associated feelings — fear, grief, anger, sadness, regret, terror — in the safe environment of a movie, a TV show, a book… a story?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but going from memory, I think every single one of these movies involves the physical death of at least one character, many of them featuring multiple characters who end up dying.

This top 25 list is infused with death. Why?

As Josh indicates in the story of watching The Lion King with his family, his young son’s tearful reaction to Mufasa’s death speaks to a universal truth: Death is a powerful, perhaps THE most powerful element in storytelling.

This doesn’t include metaphorical death. Digging into Pixar movies again:

Toy Story: Death of a friendship

The Incredibles: Death of a career as superhero

Wall-E: Death of a planet

Inside Out: Death of innocence

As storytellers, we should be aware of the dramatic potential of death as a narrative dynamic. We should also be cognizant of what Tasha Robinson wrote for The Dissolve, “It’s time to retire the Disney Death”:

Back in 1937, Walt Disney Animation launched an animated empire with Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, the first feature-length cel-animated movie. The company stuck fairly closely by the original fairy tale: Jealous of Snow White’s beauty, the evil queen feeds her a poisoned apple that appears to kill her. The seven dwarves mourn her in a touchingly autumnal sequence, but then a kiss from the prince revives her. Death is averted, tragedy turns to triumph, everyone lives happily ever after.

For Disney, a trope was born in that ending that’s dogged the studio ever since, in films all the way up to the new Big Hero 6. Like M. Night Shyamalan, taking the wrong lesson from his breakout The Sixth Sense and investing all his subsequent films with the same chilly, airless tone and bug-eyed performances that worked for the first story, Disney has returned to the death-mourning-resurrection-celebration ending over and over since Snow White, with diminishing returns. The gimmick may work beautifully within the confines of a single film: In Frozen, Anna’s “death” from her sister’s heart-freezing accidental attack, and subsequent revival because of an act of true love, is heavily foreshadowed from the beginning. It’s thought-through and supported rather than arbitrary, and it’s directed well enough to be a powerful moment. No one in the audience needs to believe that a Disney movie is going to end with tragedy and grief. It’s enough that the characters believe it in the moment, that the story logic shows how they caused the situation they find themselves in, and makes a convincing (and slightly subversive) case for how they earned their escape. But taken as part of a continuum, the moment starts to look meaningless. It isn’t just about Anna and Elsa, it’s about all their forebears who went through the exact. Same. Story. Beats.

The “Disney death” trope has expanded well beyond the story development borders of the Mouse House and the danger, as Robinson notes:

But that’s what it’s become in the Disney format, which makes end-of-film non-death feel routine, more a bit of mandatory business to be endured than an authentically powerful moment.

While death maybe an incredibly compelling narrative element, when used poorly, it can come across as inauthentic, manipulative, and unsurprising, a cheap trick by writers and storytellers to elicit emotion in the viewer or reader.

Bottom line: Stories may tend to deal with the subject of death because they are a safe haven within which viewers or readers can process their emotions about their own or loved ones’ deaths. As such, it is a powerful theme. However we have to be careful when using it in our stories so as not to have our death dynamics feel contrived.

Life is a miracle. We do well as writers to avoid using it in any other way than to respect the power of death as a narrative dynamic.
