Me getting excited to watch the Bama Rush on HBO Max and ready to see the dark side of Greek life exposed and other allegations of racism and the details of the Machine to be finally talked about on a successful streaming platform only to find out it was about some NPC with alopecia

Watched the new Bama Rush documentary on HBO last night and was so enraged by how vacuous and empty it was when it had SUCH RIPE subject matter that I’ve now recorded two different hour-long episodes in response (the second, calmer version is this very episode which turned out far more cohesively than the one recorded at 1:30 am last night)!
I know too much about the University of Alabama’s rush process because I love weird youtube subcultures and getting glimpses into systems I’ll never be part of and now, six years later, it all pays off because now the rush process has gone viral twice over on TikTok so now more people in culture want to examine what we find so captivating about the experience!
And this documentary…fails to do much at all. So I’m here to critique it, give my two cents, and contribute my thoughts on lives being lived in front of multiple cameras. The rituals, the narrative of achieving self-acceptance via gaining cultural capital, the lack of critical analysis of what these organizations promise vs. deliver, the racism, the hazing, the self-policing nature of eating disorders, The Machine, and all of the underexplored themes. Plus, a walk-through of what rush week entails because the documentary didn’t cover that part!
Anyway, I never want to watch anyone film a TikTok during a documentary again please and thank you!!!

Just watched Bama Rush with my folks and it was a fairly intimidating experience because it meant being reminded that TikTok is a real place and not just a screenshot generator for memes.

I have so many thoughts about the bama rush doc as being a southern “woman” who’s from a long legacy of sorority women but ended up dropping rush and it’s mostly that Yankees need to leave shit like this to southerners to explore and explain for themselves the best part of the doc was the Alabama journalist ALSO it barely explored the “dirty rush” concept that’s changing so much in the current rush process ALSO fatphobia and barely racism and much less tokenism also very much at play for minorities

The Bama Rush documentary has shown me just how much all of us want to be apart of something.
To fit into some sort of mold that’s made for us. Because being different and having individuality is scary to some of us. Individuality carries too much responsibility and requires too much confidence.

Anyone else notice how BamaRush is over the top pageantry while, D9/ Black Sororities and Fraternities are business events.
Like BamaRush is just a fashion show, bright colors, literally just a bunch of GRWM videos and social media posts that sort of functions as brand advertisements that you to be rich rich for.
Meanwhile, D9 might just post about interest meeting, very much business casual with neutral tones( or just straight up black suits).
Granted at least 99% of BamaRush is literally historical white fraternities and sororities at historical predominantly white institutions( aka PWIs) , and the D9 and historical Black fraternities and sororities are at HBCUs. Buts it’s a stark contrast.
And with a lot of D9, you never where the colors ( the members yeah, but never those contemplating pledging) to interest meetings, but with Bama Rush you wear the organization’s shirt the next day.

This whole bama rush and the machine situation is bringing back terrible memories of highschool & how everything was organized. I don’t think most people even realize these organizations/groups start early.
Im so excited to watch the hbo documentary especially because many of my friends are in sororities or frats, but imma pray for hbo’s legal team. Its not lookin good 😭😭
