Lately, I've been returning to an approach to color that I like: combining a few items of dark and neutral tones with an element that adds a not too saturated color to the mix. Something about this feels especially appropriate for late summer. What say you: almond toe or chisel toe? Here we have what I consider to be exemplary representatives of both approaches to last shape. On the lefthand column, my @yoheifukudashoemaker pair from @thesabotshoes. On the righthand column, my @hiroyanagi1999 pair from @leffot. Both pairs are favorites of mine, to be sure. Prior to my experiences with Yohei Fukuda, I would have called myself, with relatively few exceptions, an almond toe partisan. The Hiro Yanagimachi pair certainly makes a strong case for that position, I would say. I think the reason why the Yohei Fukuda pair helped me learn to love the chisel toe is that the last does such an excellent job of synthesizing sweeping curves with the chiseled toe. Too often with chiseled lasts, I feel the toe simply feels at odds with the rest of the shoe, as if the entire last were created on the assumption that the toe would be different, and then somebody said, "let's chisel the toe." It doesn't work.
