I love everyone going bonkers with this movie because it IS so good! It has so much good going for it! Nimona is such a fucking icon, the themes of religion, indoctrination and the othering of both queer and especially trans people in society.

Everyone being weirded out bc Nimona is not only content being who she is, but being confident in herself. Ballister at first expecting her to be ashamed or to see it as some kind of curse, and being surprised at the fact that no, Nimona actually likes who she is and what her life looks like. Everyone is so weirded out that this MONSTER, this DIFFERENT THING, not only has feelings but also does not apologise for taking up space. Nimona does not owe society anything and she knows it, and she treats anyone expecting her to explain her existence and justify it as the dunces they are. She refuses to waste her time on arguing with people about her existence, and they are upset because she is DIFFERENT and in their mind, they DESERVE to know why. But Nimona doesn't care because she knows who she is, and she is proud of that.

after rewatching nimona four times since its release (because yes, this movie is just that good), i caught a few little details that just make the whole experience so much better. so, incoming SPOILER ALERT, don’t read this if you haven’t watched the movie yet. speaking of, why the fuck haven’t you?? go watch the movie (and read the comic while you’re at it, some sites offer it for free), then come back and enjoy.

1. When the Squire gives Ballister his sword, he clearly realizes something’s wrong with it. He’s trained with it for so long that he knew that something was off just by holding it. This detail is something you wouldn’t pay much attention to when you first watch the film, but it’s there to make you realize something is a little off, especially when the Squire attempts to show him the video, but it also has plausible deniability so you could chalk it up to being something else (ie. the Squire wanting a picture with Ballister).

2. This sneaky line from this sneaky bitch.

3. Nimona tells us exactly how the movie ends. (Sorta. In a sense. The phoenix rises from the ashes and overthrows the government.)

4. You can see Nimona sneaking into the jail where Ballister is being kept.

5. Mini Ballister and Ambrosius! I think a few others have pointed this out before, but I only noticed it upon my second rewatch. (A little surprised younger Ambrosius didn’t have the Asian bob. That’s like a right of passage.)

6. Nimona’s train backstory versus her flashback.

7. During Nimona’s nightmare on the couch, she turns into a wolf, and then a cat. In her flashback, as the villagers attack her, she turns into a cat and then a wolf. It could be because having her turn into anything else would be too big for the couch, but if this is intentional, then it means Nimona was having a nightmare of that day.

8. This. Visually, the sparks are sorta similar, and in both instances, Ballister has lost something irreplaceable. I think this one might be a reach and may not be intentional, but my mind connected the two scenes and wouldn’t let go, so.

Honorable mention: the gay and trans flags above Ballister and Nimona respectively in that one scene. iykyk. I didn’t add it because 1. I think many other people have brought it up and 2. the mobile app is limiting me to 10 images. Anyway, I love this movie and its comic SO much and I’m so glad that it made it to our screens from the box of scrapped movies that could have been great if people (namely, executives) gave them a chance. There is so much love, care, and passion put into this movie, and you can really sense that this was made for its audience and its author, for its story and not only for the money it could make. This movie is metal as fuck, so GO STREAM IT!!

Omg so i have finished watching the Nimona on netflix and i gotta say - it's such a good movie! All obvious topics and themes aside, i just LOVE that we get a mean and a little evil little gremlin as the hero of the story. This world needs more girls grinning maniacally as they are trying to plot murder.

Been thinking about the Goldenheart/Nimona family dynamic, so here are some headcanons pertaining to the sillies as parents

While Nimona is functionally their adopted child in many ways, she also isn't. She's their sidekick, roommate, best friend, mentor, mentee, child, sibling, all rolled into one chaotic shape-shifting gremlin who lives in their house

I do think however that at some point, the family would adopt a child (besides Nimona) that they could actually raise

Based on what's seen in the show I imagine Ballister to be an orphan himself with a childhood very similar to that of Comic Ambrosius, this weird rambunctious little sad orphan kid who wants to prove himself more than anything. I think he would totally want to raise the family he never had and give it to a little orphan kid like him.

Ambrosius I think would want to raise a family as well, he radiates dad energy, but really wouldn't want anyone else to have to deal with the Legacy of Gloreth on their shoulders, so he'd want to adopt rather than try and father any biological children. Plus he sees his beloved husband in all those sweet little babies at the orphanage and by default that makes him love them so much.

We already know Nimona is good with kids. I feel like people don't bring that up because she's pretty alternative and in our society, liking kids is seen as somewhat trad (especially for a person with an even remotely feminine presentation) but it's obvious that she has a soft spot for them. She puts herself in danger just to comfort a little girl who was frightened, she is devastated by children's learned fear and hatred of her. Anyway what I'm saying is she would totally be like "ew, a child, keep it away" then proceed to be the absolute best uncle/aunt/sibling/godparent/mentor/friend imaginable. She would shapeshift into a little kid to play with them, or into animals like when she used to play with Gloreth. If they were adopted as an older child (not a baby) I think they'd glom to her first because she can make herself very physically non-threatening whereas two battle-scarred brick shithouses can't really do much to change how imposing they look besides trying to be as nice as possible.

I can imagine Ambrosius being a stay-at-home dad because while Ballister was actively extremely ambitious about his career, Ambrosius was just kind of shoved into it with no choice, and expected to be perfect. I can imagine him burning out and going like "Nope. Don't want that. Never wanted that, actually. I'm going to stay home and play Legos with my baby and the creature that lives in my house." Not to mention, while both the boys have dad energy, I think Ambrosius is more of an extrovert and would be less likely to get mentally burned out taking care of a little kid all day

One particular situation I like to imagine is them coming home from a date night after leaving Baby with Nimona and opening the door to see she's shapeshifted into one of them to calm the baby down. They are both screaming crying throwing up over how sweet it is before Nimona can try to explain themself away.

I wrote a snippet for my story instead of homework!

But I'm going to do a read more line cause Ambrosius is trans, and his mom, who I named after J.K. Rowling, dead names him and is super racist. Todd also pops up and is still super punchable, but he's actually kind of good in this bit because Joanne is so much worse.

Ambrosius sat in the hallway of the hospital, his skin felt hot. His vision got blurry as he tried to blink away the tears. Ballister has to go do something at work, so he couldn’t be at the checkup. Nimona, well, the hospital was not the nicest to her. So, he called his dad, and his mom found out.

His mom, Joanne Goldenloin found out her trans son was pregnant at the appointment.

“So, when will Naomi be due?” Joanne asked, her step peppy. Her husband, Henry, just looked at Ambrosius with sad eyes. “I know she’s going through a long phase, but honestly, all kids do.”

“He, Joanne, is sitting right there. Maybe ask Ambrosius when his due date will be. And for Gloreth’s sake, will you show him some respect?” Henry asked.

“Dad,” Ambrosius muttered, “it’s fine. I’m just ready for the results and going home.”

“Oh, but Naomi,” Ambrosius flinched at the loud high pitched perky noise his mother made whenever she purposely dead named him in public, like she was correcting his bad behavior. “Wouldn’t it be better if you and your child were raised in a proper household? And away from that commoner?”

“Mom,” Ambrosius glared. “That ‘commoner’ is the father of my baby. And the father’s name is Ballister. I love him, and he respects me. He gets things that are difficult, you are making things worse right now, more than anything else.”

“Well,” Joanne beamed. “We will just have to raise the commoner out of the baby, won’t we?”

“Oh my, just, just stop talking,” Ambrosius hissed as he turned and stormed away. He ignores his mom’s “But Naomi,” screams until he runs face first into someone. Looking up did little to ease his anger.

“Ambrosius, or should I say,” Todd smirked.

“Don’t you fucking dare, Thoddius,” Ambrosius hissed, breathing in shakily as his eyes water more. “I can only deal with so many bigoted assholes in a day.”

“I honestly heard your mom from down the hall while the doctor was checking out my cast,” Todd responded. His posture eased up a bit seeing the red rage radiating from a slightly pudgy Ambrosius. “And seeing you this angry, once, was enough in school, so this is my ticket to get you out of here so I don’t become a punching bag because of someone else. Besides, your mom likes to hear me talk.”

“I’ve noticed,” Ambrosius mutters, wiping his eyes. “Also, why do you still have the cast?”

“Uh, cause you fucked it up good, dude. Anyway, go before you lose your moment to escape,” Todd waved. “Joanne, hey, how’s the lady of the hour?”

Ambrosius gathered his breath, feeling a hand rubbing on his back, looking to the left slightly, he saw his dad. “I’m sorry, I tried to leave her home, but she insisted. Let's get you some fresh air, son.”

Rereading The Lightning Thief as an adult was such an odd and gratifying experience. I just finished the book in one day yesterday, and here are the things I made note of to myself:

-Wayyy less of the book than I remember is the quest. So much time is spent building up Percy's character, and his life and backstory.

-Percy is such a little asshole, it's hilarious. He is SO RUDE to everyone, it's my favorite. I want to live with how much more of a dick he is than I remembered. I remember golden boy teen Percy who's good at everything and is effortlessly cool in the perceptions of others in the later books best. Like, we obviously know him better, but I kinda forgot about his snotty little asshole sixth grader origins.

-As someone that works in the school system, he's so accurate to me it hurts. It's so relatable, his one teacher believing in him, him getting frustrated when the material doesn't come to him like it does the other kids. I don't have ADHD and I could just feel all those feelings. It's great.

-Every time Percy thinks about the "betrayal of a friend" line in his prophecy, I swear Luke is mentioned in the next line, or pops up in the next scene. I just appreciate Rick not going out of his way to seem smarter than his audience. He wants his readers, middle schoolers, to have the tools to solve the mystery.

-I can't remember if I knew his dad was Poseidon before the reveal. As an adult, it seems like almost a slap in the face it's so obvious, but I am pissed I can't remember if I was excited and surprised by the reveal.

-Annabeth is also a bitchy child, she's literally so bitchy. We don't focus on it enough.

-I definitely remember when it hit me as a child that Gabe was abusive. It was way after I read this book. I kind of like how casually the domestic violence is sprinkled in. Not only is it a children's book where that is not the focus, but Percy acts like how most kids would, I think. It's pretty fine and normal that Gabe hits him, he only goes ballistic when he finds out he hits Sally. Obsessed with how Rick, by even only barely telling us Gabe is abusive, is still like "-And we should kill him for it."

-Annabeth's crush on Luke was so obvious, she should be embarrassed.

-Totally forgot we have Gabe to thank for Percy for sure being an FBI fugitive and definitely on the no fly list irl as well as from Zeus. He's such a massive asshole.

i feel like its a known fact from the community that jade and floyd’s parents are very much influential, and definitely shady. like the self defense courses, signing a contract to give birthday gifts in ‘good faith’, y’know, the works. all signs point to fish mafia.

but at the same time, they appear to be very loving and affectionate parents, which leads me to my interpretation of them:

headcanons! (sorry, its long. i have a lot of thoughts)

-i believe that leech mom and dad stand on equal ground. leech mom ain’t just a stay at home mom, her and her husband are equally apart of the ‘business’.

-continuing that thought, i think they would have a really similar dynamic as jade and floyd. mama appears with a kind smile and gentle voice, unassuming at first (in comparison to first impressions with her husband). in contrast, her husband definitely scares people off (he’s not scared to show his teeth off from the get go), but also has a sort of charm to him that makes him really alluring. but when you get to know the two… well, you’ve seen the twins, apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

-mama is scary. like, in that way floyd is, where she’s straight up laughing at your pathetic state with her eyes wide and mouth wide open, sharp teeth all on display. the minute she gets irritated with a client she’ll be very close to clawing out their insides.

-papa is…still scary, but not as unhinged his wife. he usually handles communications and relations, because he surprisingly, is more reasonable. don’t get it wrong - if someone tries to cross him and his family, he will easily tear their throat out.

-and no, they’re not always just going ballistic on normal people. they’re pretty cordial. if you met them for the first time because jade and floyd wanted to introduce their friend (or whatever you guys are), mama would think you’re totally adorable and immediately spoil you, and papa would come right in with snacks and treats for you to try (and a new pair of shoes!)

-they are, again as the game implies, very doting parents. they spoil their kids rotten, and actually have very healthy parenting habits with their sons.

-papa is a fashion diva. can’t catch him in the same outfit twice. always is buying more dresses for his wife because he is never not completely infatuated with her.

-which is funny, because my personal hc of them is that they were rivals/enemies when they were younger. their families had a lot of beef over territory, and everytime they met up it would just be snarky comments and LOTS of bickering. eventually, who knows what happened, but they just started making out like crazy during a fight and fell in love, got married, and united their families together (by force)

-they go on fishing trips with each other when they’re in the human form. i’m talking dingy boat, dad caps, cargo pants. they’re also competitive with each other about it (mama has a heavy lead). don’t ask me why, i just feel like they do

-mama leech actually hangs out with azul’s mom a ton, they’re very close

-sometimes, when papa looks at his kids, even he’s surprised at how weak his gene game is. his kids look like they were only made by their mother

-i also changed my mind, i think i want leech mom to be 6’0 💀 i’m always changing my mind though

Dating your boyfriend was one of the best things you’ve ever done. Despite his disheveled and rough appearance, he was a sweetheart.

The day you became his girlfriend was probably the best day of your life if not the best. Not only was he good-looking, treated you well, and loved you, but he had a fun side too. He believed you only live once and you should live it how you want.

You still lived with your parents because it was close to your campus, ten-minute walk tops. One night, when Heeseung walked you home and kissed you on the forehead before running away, your parents went ballistic as they saw the romantic scene unfold through the window.

Your mom and dad took one look at his bike, piercings, and dyed hair and thought he was 'irresponsible' and a ‘heartbreaker’ and a man ‘who wouldn't be able to take care of you.’

You were never allowed to date in middle school or high school, as far as your parents said, ‘Live under our roof, live under our rules.’ You were good. You had good grades, hung out with sweet girls like yourself, and had a good future ahead of you.

Heeseung was your opposite. He wasn’t as keen on attending lessons and rather spent most of his free time at the garage that he and his friends owned, fixing up his bike.

He only went to class for you. To see you, sit beside you, to kiss you in between boring words the prof droned about. He wasn't sure what he wanted to do in life, certainly not become a lawyer or a doctor like his parents. He loved racing. The thrill, the adrenaline, the risk; it made him feel like he could do anything in the world.

Tonight, he was going to pick you up at eleven to take you to his race, after weeks of begging for him to take you. You've never been but he was known for winning every race, or so his friends said.

You were getting ready, wearing black jeans and a white tank top, clipping in some hoops into your earlobes.

While you were getting ready, there was a knock on your window. "Hey, sunshine," he lightly tapped on the window, waiting for you to let him in.

A smile spread across your face when you saw him, his crimson red hair, honey skin, and signature leather jacket. You opened the window, kissing him as soon as you did. “You're here early,” you said against his lips, as he looked up at you.

“I couldn’t wait to see my girl, is that a crime?” Your boyfriend teased, hopping inside your room. “Of course not, I missed you too, Hee,” you pressed a kiss to his cheek.

“That’s good, baby. Are you wearing that? You’ll be cold,” he said softly, taking off his jacket and putting it on your shoulders. ‘I can find a jacket or something- it's fine-” you said, as you stood in front of the full-length mirror that hung off your closet.

Heeseung had his hands on your shoulders, looking at you through the mirror and kissing your temple. “Babe, it's okay. Wear it. Let everyone know you’re mine.” His voice was husky, laced with possessiveness, as he helped you slip your arms into the leather sleeves.

“What about you?” you asked with a frown filled with guilt.

“Don't worry about me. I have like ten more, now let's get out of here before I push you on the bed and fuck your brains out,” he said in a joking tone, though he was serious.

Seeing you in his jacket, your smaller frame making the jacket look oversized, the sleeves longer than your arms, it was the cutest he’d ever seen and he just wanted to protect you from every bad thing in the world.

“Okay, let me just grab my bag,” you said, scurrying over to your closet to retrieve your little Bambi backpack. You turned back to see his face, his lips pursed as he tried not to laugh. “Don’t laugh,” you pouted, as you put your phone, a small bag of chips you stole from the pantry, your AirPods, and your keys into the small bag.

“No, no, it’s cute. It suits you, babe.” He chuckled, jutting his chin for you to put it on. “Shall we, princess?” The red-haired boy asked, extending his hand to you.

Taking your smaller hand into his, he swung his legs out your window, leading you out with him. Luckily for him, your room had a roof below and a tree beside it, which was his signature pathway for sneaking into the house to see you.

He stood on the roof, helping you out of your room and onto the shingles, holding your hand comfortingly as if it were to tell you he wouldn't let go.

He guided you to the tree, making a jump onto the thick branch of the tree beside the roof, whispering, “Slow, slow, I've got you, sweetheart,” softly before you made the jump. You’ve escaped countless times without worry, but his words comforted your heart in a way no one else ever has.

He jumped down the tree, his boots stomping against the concrete of your driveway. “Jump,” he smiled, holding out his arms to catch you. You slowly slipped onto a lower branch, letting go of the trunk and jumping into his embrace.

Heeseung caught you, your arms clinging around his shoulders. “Told you I’ve got you, baby,” he murmured, tucking in his chin and pressing a kiss to your temple.

He set you down on the ground, leading you over to his bike parked on the curb. “Safety first,” Heeseung chuckled, handing you his helmet as you snugly put it on your head. It was a bit big on you, your pout covered by the chin strap.

He helped you adjust the tightness, ensuring it wasn't loose on your head. “There. All set, gorgeous?” Heeseung asked, pressing a kiss to your flushed cheek. You smiled with your eyes and nodded. ‘That’s my girl,” he whispered, lifting your hips to help you onto his bike.

“Spread your legs for me. In a nonsexual way,” he grinned, showing off pearly whites as you giggled, sitting on the leather seat of his bike. He nestled in front of you, his large frame shadowing over you as you wrapped your arms around his waist.

“Ready?” Heeseung asked, glancing over his shoulder to look at your approval. He flashed another pretty smile as he revved up the engine, pulling out of the curb and on the road.

-Also, see that Baby is taller than Ballister (like Movie Ambrosius is) and Cyrus is shorter than Ballister (like Comic Ambrosius is) waa

-Also, I've been thinking that maybe the 'Baby' nickname was given by Ambrosius, and that's why Cyrus doesn't have it, because his fathers hadn't been too close during the pregnancy, mainly because Ballister hadn't wanted them to be.

>Comic Ambrosius referred to him as Baby once and Ballister stopped that right away with 'his name is going to be Cyrus, don't call him Baby'.

>Movie Ambrosius called him Baby once, given the lack of a name from before they had even known that he was a boy, and it just stuck right away.

-Comic Cyrus' reaction is based over the phrase 'when I remember I'm my father's daughter' that I saw once in a meme 😭

-I drew this thing to see the differences between both asjdk it mostly being that in their movie version it was always teamwork, and in the comic version it was all Ballister (+ Nimona, but the point is that Ambrosius wasn't there to parent too) (thinking if that'd be because Ballister didn't want him around or what, I don't know🧍)
