one of the fundamental things non-europeans (and many europeans frankly) don't understand, by not knowing european history, is the historical relationship between the balkans/eastern european countries with their surrounding empires (western european powers, russia, ottomans). the birth of most of these countries, in the 19th/20th century, was defined by the interests of the empires at the time. empires which leveraged their power to to determine the future of these nations, with little to no care for the populace of the regions they were shaping. it's okay not to know this, you cannot possibly know the history of every part of the world, but this is the exact reason why some sweeping statements about europe as a continent sound nonsensical. particularly so for the people who live in its newer and poorer countries. for the various people of eastern europe, grouping them with the same countries whose leaders played with the future of their nations/people as though they were toys, is absurd. and they are right to find it absurd. if you erase a significant portion of history of an entire area for your convenience, a history that defines their current reality, its people are right to dismiss you. of course there are times when simply saying europe/european is appropriate and necessary, it's just that a lot of people can't seem to tell the difference when it should be used. naturally the point of all this is very simple - don't make sweeping statements about places (any place) you know nothing about, and if you don't listen to people when they try to talk to you about their own history, why on earth would they listen to you in return?
#when you expect people to listen to you even if you have shown them nothing but complete disregard YOU are in the wrong#hoping this doesn't spread around so i can avoid getting shot#im just studying in-depth balkan history and it drives me crazy that nobody knows anything about this region#now if only i could write coherent post#logs

can you pleaaaaase translate the tags in balkan on the purple haired lee know set? the crowd is on the edge of their seat
IN BALKAN is sendinggggg me omg but ofc babe these ones aren’t even bad i can share confidently. *clears throat* so. the tags are as follows:
so first of all lutka means doll (feminine form) which i LOVE calling people in croatian men specifically. but anyway loš by breskvica is this song right here
just to paint the picture. the specific lyrics i chose ‘a ja bi da ti igram cele noći / mirišem ti na killian crne oči’ means ‘i want to dance for you all night / smell like killian / black eyes’ but the way it’s phrased is like ‘i smell like killian to/for you’ but idt he wears killian idk he smells like but to be honest it could be febreeze fuck if i care. ‘ti nisi fin bebe’ means ‘you’re not nice baby/babe’ which. self explanatory all of this tbh iykyk 🫶🏻
then loša by breskvica:
and the only lyric i mentioned was ‘zmija balkanska’ which means ‘balkan snake’ which <33 but tbh this song is kinda me in general. also loš = bad (male form) and loša = bad (feminine form) hope that helped!
#also idk but in case you might need it we speak multiple languages in the Balkan region! mine’s croatian and eg in serbia they speak#serbian and then in Bosnia it’s bosnian and so on you get the gist#though we can understand each other (not every Balkan country but these ones specifically yes) they’re still very much distinct languages!#jsyk hehe so i’ll mostly always be using croatian in these tags unless im quoting Serbian lyrics you know how it is

“Please...I have just endured 500 years of misery...”
Macedonians coming out of 500 years of being under Ottoman rule only for WW1 to get started by nearby events almost immediately
#Sege watches ROTTMNT#I'm not even joking#The Balkans were liberated from the Ottomans in 1913#And then in 1914 WW1 started#But all in all Macedonia was under Ottoman rule for 500 years#Could NOT catch a break. At all#Anyway enjoy this brief history lesson spurred by me making very region specific memes while watching a show about ninja turtles

hello, when you say people in the Balkans who aren't Slavs, like who were there before them, are you referring to Illyrians and Romans and such?
I am referring to currently alive people. You can learn about some of them literally by looking at a map of the Balkans.
#The Illyrians are still alive but they go by Albanians now.#The Balkan descendants of the Romans are called Romanians.#I think the Hungarians got there after the Slavs but I really don't have anything against them.#No Roma ever did shit to me either.#It's a very diverse region.#There's some Turks still they're fine.

Actually everyone do me a favor and take this quiz, it gives you the names, you don't even have to remember them yourself. It has an app version for mobile. Should take 20-30 minutes max. I'm being nice, just UN-recognized states, no Olympic ones or territories.
Don't comment "[continent/region] messed me up, haha, the education system failed us" or "I didn't even know [country] existed". It's not cute or funny, just exhausting.
#OBV BY CONTINENT/REGION I MEAN ANYTHING THATS NOT TURTLE ISLAND AND EUROPE#BUT IT GOES FOR EASTERN EUROPE TOO. ESPECIALLY BALKAN STATES.#like how many of you don't know there are countries in europe w islam as the most practiced religion huh#:))))))))))))))))#country quiz#bi rambles#poll#my polls#tumblr polls#quiz#quizzes#sure all the tags#i always range 91-97%. love the ones i struggle with finally becoming permanent with effort. shoutout suriname bahrain and palau 💕

upon having traveled internationally exactly twice I can confirm that being a geoguessr player means that you are consciously trying to find clues while outside that will tip you off to a region. like maybe I know the Bosnian bollards now and made sure to study them on the bus rides to and from work instead of napping like everyone else. my bad
I’m so obsessed with this guy
#I did forget some of the mauritian tipoffs but unf there’s very little official coverage there. only at the mall in port louis#or like having taken buses and taxis over borders I know what differentiates Balkan countries from other European countries despite not#having traveled to any other part of Europe. but whatever it’s fine Scandinavia for grad school next I’m mastering that region ‼️

I don't know the broader context, but it's somewhat funny to mention Nevarra in the same breath as Eastern European feel, when the first name that comes to my mind when I think of it is Navarra - a historical kingdom and currently a region in Spain. Anyway, I have a hard time trying to find a geographical name in Thedas that sound distincly Eastern European. Are there some?
The funniest thing BioWare can do is make it so Cassandra is the only person in Thedas with her accent and Emmrich is just some English bloke
#dragon age#I'm not too good when it comes to accent so I'm curious - does she *sound* Eastern European to the English native speakers?#I mean by what I'm reading on the wiki in Nevarra they have oranges and something close to meat wraps so maybe closer to the Balkans?#Or Greece?#It does sound a bit similar to Varna now that I think of it#but the name similarity to Navarra is closer#I know comparing the fantasy regions to the real ones is weird and futile but they sort-of asked for it with Orlais and Ferelden#which both have pretty clear irl inspirations#(being a caricatural depictions if we're talking about Orlais)#it makes me wonder why the heck Orlesians have bards and not trubadours#I've always thought the name of Nevarra is somewhat weird though#it's like naming a fantasy region Angland XD
