Baby turtle release!

There’s a charity here called Bali Sea Turtle Society. It turns out a lot of mamma sea turtles choose super busy Kuta Beach to come in and lay their eggs after dark. They dig a hole, lay their eggs, cover them up, and then head back off in to the deep blue never to return. Bali Sea Turtle monitor the beach each night for the mammas laying eggs and when she goes back in to the water, they move the eggs to a safe hatching ground just up off the sand. This way they are protected from the snapping jaws of local dogs and the trampling feet of over 1000 tourists a day along that stretch of beach.

Yesterday they announced on FB that they were doing a baby turtle release at 4pm, which caused a tsunami size wave of excitement amongst our little people. If you have met Jacques - for even 30 seconds - you will know that he is obsessed with turtles 🐢. So Rich expertly negotiated the traffic (45 minutes to drive 9 km!) and we headed in to the craziness that is Kuta, to see if we could volunteer our hands. 

When we arrived there was already a line of people wanting to help. For a minute we thought we might be too late, but then it turned out that they had a record number of hatchlings to be released. Instead of 100, they had 300! Side note: sadly of every 1000 released only 1 survives to adulthood...but we didn’t let that crappy news deter us.

We were given strict instructions about how to carry our turtle down to the beach in a little container, how to let them out on to the sand to walk for a bit, how to scoop them back up as the tide was super low, and then carry them right out to knee-deep water for release. And this whole process had to be synchronized amongst some 300 strangers, and every turtle released at the exact same time so there was no danger that one would be stepped on.

It was such a sweet and magical experience, tears were shed. I personally will never forget watching those little babies struggle to make their way to the ocean on the sand, some crawling ten times faster than others. Or the feeling of hundreds of tiny turtles washing in and out in the waves against my legs, struggling to get to the deeper water. So cool!

I asked the kids how they felt afterwards and here’s what they said:

“The turtles were cute and one of them was hugging on to my leg in the water... It made me feel the feeling of love inside the animal and inside myself. We have a bond.” 💜 Gisèle

Helping this little guy back into the ocean was such a turtley cool experience! 🐢😏These baby turtles are so powerless to external dangers when they hatch on their own on the beach, collecting them in the evening to hatch in a hatchery keeps them safe from birds, rubbish and drunkards! • • • • • In Bali we visited the @baliseaturtlesociety where they release thousands of baby turtles every month! Happy World Turtle Day .. Tahun 2013 pertama kali kenal sama @baliseaturtlesociety saat perjalanan #lihatindonesia @see_indonesia Yang bikin heran adalah lokasi basecamp mereka terletak di pantai Kuta yang sangat ramai, iya persis di bibir pantai. Kalau masuk dari arah pintu masuk Hard Rock Hotel, posisinya ada sekitar 50 meter sebelah kearah kiri. Tapi gak susah kok buat nyarinya, lihat aja patung penyu yg besar banget. Setelah berbincang, ternyata banyak penyu yang mulai naik ke pantai kuta dan bahkan bertelur pada malam hari. Dan akhirnya saya buktikan dengan mata kepala saya sendiri. Video tukik ini saya ambil tahun lalu, waktu itu setelah kegiatan pelepasan tukik yang rutin dilakukan apabila ada tukik yang sudah menetas. Dan yang lebih penting adalah, dari ratusan telur penyu setiap sarangnya, mungkin hanya sekitar 3% yang berhasil dewasa.
