Ogoh-ogoh Tomorrow is before the Nyepi in Bali. Tomorrow night we will have Ogoh -Ogoh parade everywhere in Bali🙏 ~Nyepi~ For the Balinese, Nyepi is a Hindu celebration that marks the start of a New Year – a day to cleanse the island from the previous year’s misdoings and bad omens, establishing a pure and positive year ahead. The whole island shuts down for a full 24 hours, and the streets are off limits to everyone. Even the airport closes for a full day, with planes being rerouted above so not to disturb the silence below. Everyone must remain inside their homes, villas or hotels without any disturbances – this means no travelling, transport, work, sound, or even light. Nyepi Eve, also known as Balinese New Year’s Eve or Ogoh-Ogoh Festival, is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration no one should miss. I was lucky to arrive right on the day, so the same evening, I went to check out the festival with some hostel buddies. . The day after the festival is followed by Nyepi “The Day of Silence.” This is the day when Balinese fast and meditate. All forms of communication including internet and electricity were shut off and no one can leave the household. I believe to follow strictly, we probably wasn’t even allow to talk (but we were foreigners, so we just had to keep our voice really really low.) This week Balinese people are happy and excited to welcome the Balinese New Year Caka 1941, known as NYEPI DAY on March 7, 2019 with various preparations. One of the important and interesting element prepared is Ogoh-Ogoh. It is a demonic statues made of richly painted bamboo, cloth, and tinsel. It symbolizes negative elements or malevolent spirits or even characters from Hindu mythology, which will be burned after paraded around the village to neutralize the negative spirit. The making of ogoh-ogoh is not only part of the rituals in the celebration of Nyepi, but also becomes a chance for Balinese youth to express their creativity in art. Ogoh-Ogoh will be paraded around the village a day before Nyepi Day, we invite our guests to watch the ogoh-ogoh parade in the village. It was such fun being at Tanah Lot Temple for the pre- Nyepi celebration. Nyepi happens every year, it's Balinese New Year, a Hindu celebration, "Day of Silence" where the evil forces are chased away during a ritual called, "bhuta kala", hitting pots, pans, other loud instruments along with fire lit tourches. These evil spirits, "ogoh-ogoh" are paraded through the streets, along with bamboo cannons, occasional firecrackers, and flames & smoke fill the air. The demons are set on fire and sent away on rafts into the ocean to assure no evil spirits linger about. The next day is when the island shuts down (literally ), no sound, no people, not one store open, airports closed, no one to be seen or heard.
