What’s on your FTH wish list?
In the last eight years, FTH has had creators offer to work in more than 800 fandoms, including fan laborer offers for translations in at least a dozen languages, specialist expertise in topics as varied as nuclear policy during the cold war to genetics to Elizabethan England, and sensitivity reading for all manner of things including LGBTQIA, BDSM, and immigrant experiences in the US. We’ve had a frankly astounding variety of offers.
So, as we look ahead to when signups open, we’re wondering: what are you hoping to find in the offerings for FTH 2025? Are there fandoms you’d love to someone sign up to write? Ships or tropes you particularly want to bid on? Are there types of fan labor that you’re keen to find? Translations in particular languages? Specific specialist expertise you’re looking for?
Among your mods there’s interest in seeing signups for ‘For All Mankind’ and 'Black Doves’ and 'Queer'. And for beta services for fic in French. And experts in the age of sail. And for translating songs from Chinese. And for more C-drama vids. And assistance with D&D lore. And, and, and …
If you’re hoping to find someone who can explain the migratory habits of deep sea crustaceans, the day-to-day experience of living with impaired vision, or the inner workings of the Balinese gamelan, reblog with your wish list! And maybe someone who can help — someone who might never have thought to offer that, but who now knows it’s wanted — will sign up to participate.

When I was cleaning my memory yesterday, I realized I haven’t posted anything from their Jakarta concert last November.
Here is when Gary told a story about his music teacher who taught him Gamelan (traditional instrument from Javanese/Balinese culture in Indonesia) and in love with Indonesia and lived in Jakarta. The last time they met was when TT went to Jakarta in 1995. I think I heard this story once in a magazine article.

Daily instrument — Gendèr
The gendèr is a Balinese and Javanese metallophone, played in a gamelan ensemble. It’s thin keys are strung up by cords on metal/bone supports whilst above bamboo resonators.  When the keys are hit with a disc-headed mallet, it produces sound based on its respective key. The gendèr is then muted using either the heel of the hand or the pinky. The gendèr has the longest sustain in gamelan, even lasting a whole minute, because of its sustain, the gendèr is the only truly polyphonic instrument in the gamelan.

Balinese dance
Balinese dance is an ancient dance tradition that is part of the religious and artistic expression among the Balinese people of Bali island, Indonesia. Balinese dance is dynamic, angular, and intensely expressive.

Legong Keraton Dance performance with Gamelan ensemble in Puri Saren Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
There is a great richness of dance forms and styles in Bali; and particularly notable are those ritualistic dance dramas which involve Rangda, the witch, and the great beast Barong. Most of the dances in Bali are connected to Hindu or traditional folk rituals, such as the Sanghyang Dedari sacred dance that invokes benevolent hyang spirits, believed to possess the dancers in a trance state during the performance. Other Balinese dances are not linked to religious rituals and are created for certain occasions or purposes, such as the Baris or Pendet welcoming dances and Joged dance, which is a social dance for entertainment.

164: Timelash // A Morphology of Wonders
Tumblr media
A Morphology of Wonders Timelash 2021, Aguirre (Bandcamp)
This was sold to me (or rather, given to me by a pal) as ambient psych, and that’s in the right ballpark, though it could just as easily be called squelchy New Age or discreet prog. The compositions are busy enough that they’re not going to completely fade into the background, but the melodic ideas unfold gradually enough you need to concentrate a bit to grasp the whole elephant as it were. A Morphology of Wonders is packaged as an alien taxonomic expedition (in biology ‘morphology’ is the study of the structures and constituent parts of living things), and it’s easy to imagine parts of this soundtracking an exhibition of speculative flora and fauna at a museum. It has a humid, rainforesty vibe—the ingenious percussion often has echoes of Balinese gamelan, and the synth tones can be suggestive of the flutes used by indigenous Andean musicians. But there’s also an, I think, intentional degree of cheese—the number of vintage Del Rey and Tor paperbacks in these guys’ apartments is no doubt in the mid-three-digit range, and they have surely rolled a joint or two on the sleeve of a Kitarō LP. It’s hard to take seriously meditation music that sounds geared to Californians with large gold medallions nestled in their chest hair, but I think Timelash ultimately want the listener to be delighted by the textures they conjure from their instruments, the fantastical documentaries this music can help project onto the backs of one’s drowsing eyelids.

I was tagged by @valenshawke! Thanks.
Currently reading: Wikipedia articles on stuff like Schenkerian analysis, Balinese gamelan, and mensural notation.
Last song: “Oxford Town/Cumberland Gap” by Crooked Still.
Currently watching: a Youtube dissection of the “Lightlark” YA novel, and a sonic deep dive into an E.F. Walcker pipe organ built in 1845.
Current fic (I'm reading/invested AF): nothing specific currently, because….
Writing? Yes! I’m working on a Turn A Gundam fanfic with the basic premise of “post-series, with trans-fem Loran Cehack”.
Next on my watch list: anime-wise…. it’s either the Evangelion Rebuilds, Shoujo Kakumei Utena, or Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. Movie-wise, I know exactly what I’m watching next — Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (with my friend).
Current obsession: Turn A Gundam in general and Loran Cehack in particular. Also, the Romantic trumpet in 6-foot F (as written for by Bruckner, Debussy, and others).

Episode 1. The Midday Sun[edit]
The first episode is a general introduction to Bali, its people and their varied arts, with the main focus on Peliatan village, its orchestra and dancers. It focuses first on the gamelan orchestra, before turning to the influence that Walter Spies has had on the younger generation of painters. It concludes with the training of new pre-puberty Legong dancers and their first performance.
Episode 2. Night[edit]
This episode covers the animistic rituals and festivals of Bali, officially Hindu, but with origins in ancient ceremonials practised long before Hinduism came to the island. It opens with the spirit possession of children, said to be the origin of the Legong dance; it continues with possession by pigs, horses and even pots; and concludes with the all-important Barong ritual. This episode includes historical footage of the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung.
Episode 3. Recital of Music[edit]
This episode is about music and dancing from the Balinese village of Peliatan, the separate items linked by an appropriately illustrative detail from Balinese paintings. It opens with a virtuoso instrumental from the gamelan orchestra; next is a dance choreographed in 1951, The Bee Sips Honey; the 3rd section presents snippets from 4 different ensembles; and it closes with the unforgettable Monkey Dance.
